An Online Payday Loan Or Window To A Scam?

Strapped for cash? You might think an online payday loan is a quick and easy way to help stretch your money. But before you enter your bank account or any other personal information on a payday loan website, back away from the keyboard! That online payday loan might be a window to a scam.

A federal court has granted the FTC an order for contempt in the matter of Suntasia Marketing, Inc., a company previously involved in a telemarketing scheme that bilked consumers out of millions of dollars. This time around, the scammers took advantage of people looking for online payday loans by tricking them into completing an online application. The catch? The website and application were a pretense – an attempt to get people’s bank account information. Once the company had their account numbers, they enrolled unaware consumers in an ongoing membership program for an online mall. But because the terms of the program were obscure and buried deep in the website, there was no way for the consumers to know. And the company took their silence and failure to cancel as acceptance and permission to regularly debit money from their accounts on a regular basis.

So how can you avoid a scam like this one? It can be tough. But knowing how some scam operators work can make you think twice about the sites you visit and what you do when you get there.

  • Keep a close hold on your personal information. Whether your visit to an online payday loan site results in a loan, simply entering information on the site may come back to haunt you. Even if you never hit "Submit" to complete the transaction, your information can be captured through keystroke logging – a program used to see and store everything you enter on application. Scammers can use this information to commit identity theft, or debit money from your accounts.
  • Read the fine print. If the details of any online transaction, application or membership program aren’t apparent and understandable, don’t follow through. Incomprehensible or hard to find details could be warning signs of a scam.
  • Review your bank account and billing statements for unauthorized charges. Regularly reading all your account statements can help you see where your money is going, and help you flag unauthorized billing charges. If you suspect an unauthorized charge, ask your bank or the merchant about it, and dispute it.

If you suspect a scam, file a complaint with the FTC. For more information, check out our Payday Loans and Online Payday Loans article.

These cockroaches took my last 3 bens bastards

Received a phone call from 218-429-4037 as well to my job threatening of a law suit, told them i would call them back and he didn't want to hang up finally he gave me the number and hung up. He called me back because i did not call back at the time i said i would which i was just waiting for my lunch time, i finally was able to call back they asked for my info which i didn't give to them I told them if you called me you should have my info and it was weird i never got anything on the mail to which they said they emailed me, so i told them i dint get anything because it probably goes to my scam then told them not to call me anymore and hung up. They called my cell phone almost right away more than once finally i answered and told him to tell me what i was being sued for then he said let him get my file and transferred me to someone else then i had enough and said do not call me anymore if i am being sued i will wait for my local authorities to contact me because you are scaring me he hung up without saying a word. I believe something official will come with a letter first and not all the workers will have the same Indian accent beware do not give out any info and it works to mention the authorities...

Received a call after 4 years saying I owe for a past due payday loan which I know I do. The call came from area code 949. The guy said they have been trying to serve me at my current address and previous address. The problem is I haven't had any one show up at my door. Also, they said I will be served on the 15th between 12 am and 12 pm. I thought about it and called back and spoken to the guy and he said he couldn't talk to me and hung up. Afterwards a friend called the number and the guy couldn't give him the name of the company. Later on I tried to call again and the phone number was disconnected.

My sister was taken by these scammers< she was really desperate for money so she filled out and online app for a loan. They called her back to say she had been approved for 1500 dollars. But first she had to verify that she had the means to pay it back so she had to pay 165 dollars from a green dot card. All she had was 30 dollars so she asked me to loan her the rest, which I did, but I should have known better. My first red flag was when she told me she had to pay money to get money, that just didn't sound right to me. But she paid the 165 and they put her on hold for a very very long time, they kept coming back on saying we are verifying everything with your bank ect ect. Then they came back on and said ok you can pick the money up from western union, but first you have to pay a $400 processing fee. What!!!! If you apply for a loan that means you need money, so how is she suppose to pay that?! So that is when I stepped in and tried to tell her that that was a scam but she wouldn't listen. She talked them down into $250 but I had already had enough. so I stopped by the western union to see if this had some truth to it and sure enough she told me that we were being scammed. What ever you do not send anybody any money if you do not know them. And you never have to pay money to get money. And lastly in the state that I live in you cannot receive a loan over the phone no matter how good it sounds. Please be careful!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. You can file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at

It's important to submit a complaint because investigators from all over the country access the FTC's complaint database. Watch this video to learn more about how to file a complaint with the FTC and why it matters.

I had been receiving these phone calls fro a michelle Jackson and agent dibbs from rapid recovery for a month now on a pay day loan I took out almost three years ago well the other day I had gotten a call and was told that if I did not contact them that I would be arrested for check fraud and theft by deception so me being scared due to never being in trouble before I paid them 225.00 which was my rent money for the month and then they proceeded to tell me I still owe them 1060.00 by Monday after looking up the number and finding out that it is a landline phone I put a report in to the attorney generals office and with the bureau of consumer protection the number is as follows so that no one else gets scammed out of money like me and my family 1-630-701-7763

just today I was on the phone with alan cooper, said he was from Rhode Island and we had gotten approved for $10,000 we waited for 3 days to judt get a response from them my husband had filled out a app for a loan for $10,000 he sent $943.00 ntoday and never got his loan,he put $298 on a green dot card and $645 ON A re-load it card and then they tell him he was .89 short and he needed to re-do all the funds,we just wanted to get ahead on bills since Christmas is right around the corner and we have out daughter, her husband and 2 grandkids and 1 one the way living with us,i cried for about 5 hours and screamed they f----d us and all the could do was call again, the number is 847-454-7980,i spoke with alan cooper, john baker & andy downs

They told me 1000 will be added to my Citibank account for I was approved for a loan of that amount then they said I would have to show 180 dollars first when I tried to ask more questions they hang up but yet they called my phone all day from different numbers and yes they did have a western Indian like accent I can hardly understand a damn thing there saying and they have the nerve to speak fast as hell and get angry when you say slow down

I got scammed last wk too. I was trying to get a loan from a guy with a thick accent. I filled out many online applications and got probably a 100 calls a day. I'm aware of online scams, but since I was getting so many different calls from so many different #'s, I thought there had to be some legitimate ones out there. This guy said he was from TD Bank. I looked up TD Bank online, and it it legitimate. He had me put $275 on green dot money pak for funds verification so he could see I could afford to pay the loan back. He told me it would be deposited into my acct in about 30 min but called back saying my credit was too bad and I had to pay another $179 to Western Union!!!!! I said to cancel my loan and give me my $275 back, and he said he couldn't do that. I've also been called by numerous so called law enforcement agencies & attorneys telling me they're looking for me for check fraud for some cash advances I never took out. They use phrases like "a restraining order has been issued against you" I was contactd by some of the same ones I read about on here. I even filed a police report about the scam I was involved in, but they said they couldn't do anything to catch them. This is so awful how this is allowed to go on!!!!! This is completely criminal activity, and they're praying on broke people with bad credit, and no one is doing anything about it!!!!!

It’s best to stay about from lenders who ask you to wire money or pay with a pre-paid card to get a loan. This is a sign of a scam. The article Advance-Fee Loans provides six sure signs of an advance-fee loan scam.

I been receiving calls all day from guys with thick accents asking me to put 150 on a visa card

Jake Thompson Phone # IS 1-773-377-6843 AND Dave Jones Phone # 1-312-473-7061 They Claim To Be CASH USA PAY DAY LOANS. They Are Scammers Do Not Give Them Any Information or Money Hang Up On Them. They scammed Me Out Of $565.00 Useing Green Dot MoneyPak Cards. They Are The Scum Of The Earth Beware.

It started for me in May 2014, I applied online payday loan. And with the legit, for lack of a better term, payday loan lenders, I received calls from these guys with Indian/Pakistani accents. They had very american names and used bank names like GE Capital, Citibank and the likes. They get hyped and u think you are about to have loan deposited in your bank account. Then they drop the bomb, my credit score was below 640 and need to prove I can repay the loan. Now comes the rub, get a green dot card or some other prepaid card to load the 1st months payment. Call them with the card info and they will verify the funds are there. Now comes the moment of truth, I advise them, no one pays for loan in this country upfront. Explained as loan operations banker, me, that this is a scam. They become belligerent, offended and still try to sell the deal, never bit. The become abusive, threatening and the hate being made fun of, they would hang up and call back repeatedly. I have had hundreds of these calls and I too report them to the FTC. Seems like everyone on this forum shares their experience whether they were scammed or were close to being scammed. The FTC and FBI tells us the do's and don'ts but here's my concern, what are law enforcement doing about these scammers. This has been an issue for more than seven(7) years at a cost of $5Million a year unsuspecting distressed Americans. And it's not just us, UK, Australia, Ireland and amongst a few others. But the theme is the same, we share our experiences, we report and file complaints with the appropriate law enforcement and regulatory agencies. But it appears that's as far as it goes, no arrest, no pressure from the state department to lean on the Indian government and crack down on these practices. They log our complaints and that is it, seems to me it's not something that our government wants to deal with. We talk about national security, but we don't see this as a threat considering these scammers have purchased lists from the loan referral sites, at, get this $0.20 a pop. They have our drivers license numbers, our SS#, Addresses, phone numbers and so on. They may not be able to get credit using our info but they use our identities for other neferious activities.

You can go to your local county clerk's office, or contact them to look up the background of these businesses before you deal with them. They seem to be a necessary evil? People need money and other people are willing to give it to you. Avoid the scams though, they are in the plenty. You can do your research contact your clerk and find out if they are legitimate. Safe travels :)

just leave numbers below I will call them all day and night like they do you

If they call you nonstop just Google some soundboards and have some fun, it seemed to have helped me.

I did a loan online and was told no every time. Then I started getting these calls from 682-888-5811 9173106649 7328738647 9032181328 all these foreign people with American names start telling me I was approved from an installment loan for $8000 if I go get a cash verification of $250 to prove I could pay back the loan. Almost fell for it too. The phone was so full of stactic I couldn't ever hear. So I felt like if you can give me $8000 you can get a better phone system. God bless them they try so hard. People they don't care if you lose everything they just want your money. Had to share my experience they are calling now I'm using my Indian voice then my country voice now my black voice and they keep calling. Hahaha jokes on you.

Yeah they got me. I applied for a installment loan and I was getting a call from a Indian lady names Tiffany jones but I wasn't thinking just needed the money and and never stop to think that this lady was from India. They told me to load money onto a green dot moneypak to pay for registration for federal funded Ge Capitol bank had me on hold forever to retrieve the $105 from the card then told me it was and error 404 that kept coming up when they were trying to transfer fund they also went as far as to say my bank won't accept eft transfer which was bull. They said we can send it thru western union but they needed $286 to deactivate the western union code. Beware the called from 954-312-7500 and another scammer is 413-629-3424. I'm changing my acct not sure how deep this can go but to cover myself I'm closing my acct and opening another.

Scammers 954-312-7500 and 413-629-3424. Moneypak scammers from India. Change your bank account and beware Indians with American names. Ruthless and conniving.

sm!scammed me for 5000$ as a bad credit score

I keep getting phone calls from different numbers. The last one today from"VictoriaJames" from (713) 316-4965, stating she was from Texas Mediation Services. I was really upset and called and told her that I was going to call my lawyer and the police because the message she left was against the law. She proceeded to called the "B####" word and then I got more upset and called her stupid a***. She started screaming and I just started saying lalalala and hung up on her. Is going to the police worth my time? She did not have an i dian accent. Not be stereotypical, but she sounded African American.

I got the same call from same number that I have to pay today or a warrent will be issued for a payday loan bunch of bull crap wat do I do

Mine was from filling out the online application for a payday loan and I am not a stupid person but have been very stressed and desperate to get a loan to get my situation under control. If I had not been so desperate i wouldn't have believed what they were saying but hoping hope against hope and hope that you can get a loan. Of course no loan just excuses. Took me for $695.00. Phone number is 210-607-4016 and the names are Alex White and Mark Johnson. Still can not believe I fell for this.

I was conned out of hope and desperation. I feel like such an idiot because I knew I was being taken, but I was just hoping so much it wasn't true. I lost over $600 on these green dot cards and I don't know what to do. I hate myself for letting it go so far. Initially the call was from San Diego (619)870-9619 and the names are clearly fake as they are obviously Indian. Names are Mike Johnson and Mark something. Then they transfer you to the (210)607-4016 and the last name is Smith- clearly fake as well. I just want to cry. I'm so sorry for the other people going through this.

HELLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!! Hey i got a call and said i was approved for a 5000 installment loan. But first they needed to send 700 to my account for good faith and verification. Once i received it i was to withdraw it and load it on a moneypak card and call with the number. Anybody heard of this one???????? The company is "speedy cash" and the # is 530-207-3168???????

I did but not from Speedy cash from 24x7 loan Don't do it!!!!!!

Anyone receive a text from +1 (917) 768-6559

Has anyone been threatened to be served legal documents from Laden Asset Group? They supposedly came to my house the other day but I wsdn't home. Now they are threatening to come to my job.

If this is a debt collector, you have rights under federal law. We’ve written on this blog about it before and you can also find information about your rights in this article. Debt collectors are prohibited from saying that legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don’t intend to take the action. In addition, debt collectors may not contact you at work if they’re told (orally or in writing) that you’re not allowed to get calls there.

Someone calling from a NCS GNC Associate On a 844 816 1740 demaining money on a loan

A John Reese Calling my job from a number 8448161740 stating he's private investigator demanding money from loan.

What can I tell my friend to convince him that it's a scam? He insist on believing he'll get his money any day now.

Many credit unions are offering "fresh start" and "second chance" unsecured loans for those with not so good credit. Most of these special loan programs are capped at $1000 dollars but come with a decent apr. InfoAviator has a list of these credit unions offering these loans

I was scammed last year by these people and how i wish and pray to God that they would be stopped! Unfortunately i am in need of a loan again and without a good enough credit score I am sunk. I put in an app on line again and it started all over! Now they are saying that ther is a money card that is made specially for this issue and it is government approved and certified! Well i have not seen any card like this yet so has anyone else???

Called and left a message that there are serious allegations against me and that i need to call and give a statement immediately. Failure to do so will result in action against me. Funny thing this call came from 213-375-0448 and last week they called twice from 760-314-6285...same recording and that I needed to call 855-573-1643. How do i stop them from calling me?

I got a phone call yesterday from a tx number saying I took out a payday loan on the internet in January 2013 with advance LCC that I had to pay them 1745.25 or I would go to jail that I needed to get a defense lawyer or turn myself into my local authorities I paid them $300 dollars like a idiot then I was telling my co workers what was going on they told me it was a scam I needed to go to my bank and stop the transaction and cancel my debit card but the scammers said they are aig investigation but here is the phone numbers 210-774-4134,832-783-9180,210-762-6767 just seeing if anyone eles has been contacted by these people

I am an Asst Dist Attorney. You absolutely were scammed, and your co-workers were right. NEVER, EVER, under ANY circumstances, make payments in this manner. The phone numbers, are irrelevant. Let me repeat that for the hundreds of people here listing phone numbers: PHONE NUMBERS ARE IRRELEVANT. Any person can get any number they wish, with absolutely ANY area code, on the Internet, and often - for free, Many scammers never use the same number twice! QUIT thinking, that area codes, have anything, at ALL to do with the physical location of your caller. It does NOT, anymore. I could have 10 phone numbers in 10 minutes, right now, and use them from my computer, for free, right call YOU. All I need is your number, and that could be connected with absolutely anything. People: THE KEY QUESTION TO ASK IS *** "DO YOU or THIS COMPANY, *LEGALLY OWN* THIS DEBT?" Most of the time, they do not. Theyt are either straight-up scammers, or they are "free-lance-collectors," to whom YOU do not personally, owe a dime - AND, who are famous, for constantly screwing up doing and filing all the steps needed to have your payment officially be posted and counted. Thats right! If you CANNOT get them to SAY the sentence, "Yes, I am the, or represent the legal owner of this debt." then hang up. When you GET a collection call...interrupt THEM, and make THAT be the 1st question you ask. ******IF the DO say, that YES, they ARE the legal owner of the debt.:" Then, politely tell them that:
"Oh, yes! I look forward to paying this off! I'm glad you called! However, of course i will need you you provide me with written proof that you are, indeed the rightful, legal representative of this debt, ***ASREQUIRED BY STATE AND FEDERAL LAW*** so, do you have my mailing address?" Ususally...they hang up on you, at this point. If not- give them your work address, if possible. If not, and you feel nervous about telling whomever this is where you live...then simply say : MY ADDRESS ISSTILL THE SAME! ...I mean, they HAVE all your legal paperwork, right? why should YOU have to tell them your address?????

Has anybody heard of Tim Cooper with 24x7 loans 1-872-588-4348?

Got a call on restricted line. Women call Tammy. She said they were going to levy and freeze my bank account over unpaid credit card for $6,000.00 Well I told her I never had any credit card. Which is true. She said I had paid on it before. She had all my personal info. This took me back. I checked my accounts and credit report. It perfect. No cards, loans or balances. I asked for a phone number to have my lawyer to call back she started yelling at me and told me she wouldn't go over this with me again. So I guess she was caught in the act of deception.

Got an email from a bryan moore at 313-332-4900...i had just gotten a new debit card after a recent hack...they had my info??? and wanted to loan me $1000 to $5000...go figure! I had to call to hear the accents of this very english name from detroit...and yes, the person spoke with hinglish inflection...actually a nice change from spainglish here in the southwest...

They got me too 115 dollars went down the drain because of this i will never fall for that again

i actually did take a payday loan out and i have been having a really hard time paying it back. I asked for a payment plan but they said they were unable to so so at the time, so of course because money has been tight i havent been able to pay it back yet . Advanced america calls me still about twice a week from the same phone number. The guy called yesterday and its ALWAYS the same guy. I know he truly is from advanced america. BUT heres the SCARY PART. today around 5p.m. i recieved a phone call and on my caller i.d. (cell phone) it said "emergency call . S.o.s. 911" so i answered it confused as to why this number was calling me and it was a man that stated he was with a law enforcement something and that i have a warrent for non payment to advanced america and when i said nothing back he said "mam can u tell me where you are now?" And i was so scared i hung up. Moments later the same number called and i didnt answer. Havent heard anything back but ive been pacing bsck and forth in front of the wndow scared that a police officer is going to come get me any moment. My daughters 4th birthday is friday so im super scared. I dunno what to do. Please help me ... i have three questions: 1. How do they call from a 911 emergency number 2. Can they rly issue a warrent for not paying the loan back 3. If its not who thwy say they are, how do they know i have a loan and i didnt pay it back- r they hacking into advanced americas files somehow!! If so, they have everyone's bank act.information, address and everythinf.. please help me and respond asap.

Here are some answers to your questions:

1) Unfortunately, technology allows scammers to make it so that calls look like they're coming from a different number, but they could be anywhere in the world.

2) No, they can't issue a warrant for your arrest for owing money. The caller was most likely threatening you into paying, which is illegal. However, a company can sue you if they think you owe them money so if you get documents from a court, pay attention. You need legal advice.

3) If you took out a loan and didn't pay it, it is possible that the debt was sent out for collection. But, federal law prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you.

Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.

I am so sick of these payday scams...just received a call from 323.244.2927. They state that they are going to serve me at work. Doesn't a company just serve you and not tell you ?

I have for the last several months, been receiving calls from three different numbers without any caller ID. Three days ago, I received two calls from two different numbers and finally answered one. I was told I had been granted a Payday loans for $750 in July of 2012. Interesting, they told me that the money had been electronically into my checking account which was not opened until May 21, 2013. They are threatening to put a lien on my a t and report me to the State Attorney. Furthermore, I never electronically for it at my bank. These people should be investigated immediately for excessive fraud, harassment, and should be investigated immediately. These people are annoying and scary. M S Wood

The best thing to do is hang up the phone. Also, you can file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at The details you provide could be important if there's an investigation.

well i just need to know how we get the info from the jail that issued me the card and put money on that card from time to time you know not enough to notice
