Fake IRS collectors are calling

This time of year is often taxing for many consumers. Scams aimed at stealing taxpayers’ money make the season more stressful.

The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) warns that crooks posing as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials are contacting people claiming they owe taxes. The caller demands a prepaid debit card, wire transfer or a credit card number for payment. If the person doesn’t comply, the caller threatens to arrest or deport the target, or take away their driver’s license or business.

Thousands of victims have lost money to these tax scam artists. But there are ways to recognize them and foil their attempts to steal your money.

These scammers often:

  • call you. But when the IRS contacts people about unpaid taxes, they do it by postal mail, not by phone
  • use common names and fake IRS badge numbers
  • know the last four digits of your Social Security number
  • demand payment via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS doesn’t ask for either of these payment methods, nor will they ask for credit card numbers.
  • rig caller ID information to appear as if the IRS really is calling
  • send fake emails that look like legitimate IRS correspondence
  • make a second call claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, rigging the caller ID information

To protect yourself from imposters who call, claiming to be from the IRS:

  • don’t provide any account or other personal information. Hang up the phone.
  • never wire money to a person or company you don’t know. Once you wire money, you can’t get it back.
  • if you owe - or think you owe - federal taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions. You also can visit the IRS website at
  • if you’ve already paid your taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
  • forward emails from the IRS to Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those emails.
  • file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at Include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint.

Called from June Smith 202-241-0906 asking me to return call about something urgent. You could tell it was a automated call as they didn't give their badge number and the IRS starts with mailing not calling. Called back got busy signal and also a message that didn't identify them as IRS.

In CA. Received a call from 202 506 9713. It basically said the same things as the other folks here (from "the IRS");I filed a complaint with both the FTC and "Do Not Call".

I received a voicemail today that was along the lines of "Officer Julie Smith left a message8/6/2014 from internal revenue service and the hotline to her position is 202 506 9784. She said "don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any legal allegation towards you. Goodbye and take care."

I got a call this morning saying his name was nick brown a criminal investigator with the IRS and needed to call back immediately because I have a warrant. His number was (202) 241-0896.

Just had 2 calls from the same number 202-864-1354 from a Robin White from the IRS saying if I don't call that number back I'll get sued by the IRS.

i just received a voice message from 202 506 9724 saying to call back or the IRS will take legal action! Total scam so I'm reporting phone number!

# calling us is 202 506 9962

They called from Novato CA, number is (415) 251-8821.
Why is no one doing anything about this

Why doesn't the FTC take immediate action on the (202) 506-8682 phone number that calls repeatedly. Or is a private cause of action allowed since this number violates the Do Not Call Registry as well. I have received multiple electronic voice mails from IRS Officer Julie Smith with an immediate call back to (202) 506-8682

Sam hone number and name--Julie Smith. I am going to send here the name of my Nigerian benefactor and tell her to collect from my account there.

Yep, Got the same voicemail from a Julie Smith 202-506-9835.

I have received several calls from 202 864 1327 and Voice mail were left stating a lawsuit is being filed. Called the number and someone from India was on the line claiming to be the IRS.
Knew it was a scam instantly and hung up..

Received an automated call on my cell phone from the "Attorney Julie from IRS" requesting immediate call back regarding time sensitive matter.

August 10th. Just received a call from "Julie Smith" from 202-506-9784. I'd like to meet these guys. There is some information on the side of my baseball bat I would like to share with them.

Got a call from Julie Smith today. She sure is a busy lady. Let the machine take it. Then delete. Scum scammers.

You really want to hurt them? Blow a high pitched whistle in the phone during the call. If it's loud enough, you might actually cause some hearing damage . Aside from that, there isn't much you can do.

I got a call from 844-858-6966 claiming they had a legal affidavit of tax fraud. An Indian call rep gave me the name Steve Evans, w federal employee I'd 936258 and IRS employee I'D 9421. Then "verified" my name and home address. But when he wanted my date of birth I told him if he gave it to me, I would verify it was correct. He said it was my legal obligation to give it to him. When I didn't, he told me my local sheriff would be calling in a few hours. Then he hung up.

Watch out for calls from 202 864 1361

Received a call from 202-280-7705. Definitely not american IRS agents - both Foreign Iranian and Asian accents. Very rude and abrasive. Then while on the phone a 91 1 call came thru that the agent said was the police coming to arrest me for tax evasion. Interesting that a phone call and not a certified letter was my contact and claiming that I was not home when they came in person........I have called the number back to only get a voice mail message. Please hang up if you receive a call from this number.

I received a phone call from an Officer Justin Grey from the IRS phone number 202-241-1640 saying he wanted to talk to me lawyer and that I was in big trouble. He said I was being investigated on 4 counts of fraud for the years 2008 - 2013... defrauding the irs, misrepresentation, tax violation and theft according to tax code 673H. He said a warrant is out for my arrest and would be in effect at 4:30 today. He said there was going to be a federal lien on my assests and he was going to freeze my bank accounts and that I owed $512.00 . I was petrified and was tempted to pay it until I told him I didn't get a notice and asked what address he had on file for me... that's when he fell apart and didn't sound too confident anymore and took him two min.s to produce the correct state, but he still had the town wrong. He then proceeded to clean up his mistake saying he needed to look into his file and call me back. I filed a complaint at

202-241-6116 with Matt and Jeff who speak with Indian accent from IRS. And phone sound was kind of from far away, international call? Must be scam.

Got a call today from Officer Julie Smith-415-829-9230 - call back since they leave an urgent IRS collection voicemail - get some foreign guy - asks if I know anything about a filing against me - I said no and my taxes are done each year jointly with my husband by an accountant - he hangs up...I try to call back - he then pretends not to know who I am says I'm calling a wrong # - SUCH JERKS!!!!!!!!

I just received one today. they left a message. he called himself IRS officer John White 202-241-7915. when I asked for proof of identify, he threatened to have me arrested. then I asked again, he hung up. then he tried calling again

I just received the same message from Julie Smith claiming to be with the IRS at (202) 506-9962.

Received a call today, August 21. New name: Don Brown (doesn't sound like any Don Brown I've ever met)and different number as well 203.701.1071.
It sounded like he was in a warehouse of some kind. Pretty sure the IRS office doesn't sound like Costco.

Yeah, we just got called by this # 818-945-8310 she said her name is Rose Gilbert. I called her back from a different number and acted like a police detective and she hung up on me. Dang Scammers!

I too just received a call from Julie Smith, number 202-506-9835. Absurd that this is still happening.

received a msg from Julie Smith IRS 202-506-9983 to call and don't ignore this message or the IRS will take legal action. The message was recorded and based on the internet post the IRS will only contact you via mail. Scam

They just called our home #202-506-9461, and lwft a reference#. HATE these people.

I got a call from a scammer at 202-506-9983. They even left me a voice mail message to call them. The agent's name is Julie Smith. Boy, these people make me mad.

Fake #202-241-2597 talking about putting people in jail if you dont pay

they called me and left me a 2 min scam vm.

These IDIOTS called and left a vm early this morning, and when I called back, the lady named "Jenny" with a clear and distinct Indian accent(I would know I am an Indian born here, but know the accent very well). This lady luckily thought my name(which in Indian can be male or female- it's kind of like Kelley Tracey or Ryan- girls and guys can be named these) was a male name(Im female). She not only is dumb, but she insisted that I give the phone to the real person with my name. I told her this is her, what do you need and she replied "Don't yell this is not your house that you can yell," and then proceeded to hang up. Immediately right there- the fraudulent call, the accent, the fake indian with the name Jenny, and the way she responded and hung up told me she was part of this scam that I have been hearing about.
They have sadly targeted so many people and extorted money. Shameless ,assenine criminals who give Indians a bad name, and are targeting poor tax paying Americans!

I called back and I had a little fun with her. She actually had the nerve to have another "co worker" of hers call me back, and I did the same with him- had a lot of fun, before I advised them clearly they would be REPORTED to the IRS and traced to their location and would go to jail, if not deported.

They were both very rude, and had a rude, arrogant response for everything I said to them, so these self-righteous, idiots think moronically they are doing something right. They are SHAMELESS so do not feel afraid to threaten them a little, and to give them a peice of your mind. This is the only language they are going to understand, so you might as well use your might and put them in their places. The numbers they have called me from were:

202-506-9983, 202-506-8096, and then they even got the number switched to match my area code(they are relentless !!) to this number- 856-513-6651 and 856-942-1489.

Look at how shameless, disgusting and relentless they were- they had to call me from 4 different numbers because they knew I was not scared of them, and that I "got their number" figured out right away and what they were all about.

Be careful guys, and best of luck! Remember, give them a piece of your mind, and threaten them back, they will get the idea that their bs scam is no longer working.

i got call from schamer 415-251-8821 her name is sharon

Got a call from 202-506-9962, claimed to be IRS agent working 24 hrs a day at IRS headquarter in DC. Threatening a case again me, dropped the call saying he will send a letter when I called his bluff and demanded letter in writing. Caller has very heavy Asian Indian accent.

"Peter Parker" (aka Spiderman) called me this week with the same voice as Melvin from 2 weeks ago but this time he is at the courthouse filing the IRS lawsuit against me. Hilarious! First number was (202) 864-1319. Second number was (844) 241-7999. Will someone please explain why our government has access to so much cell phone data but can't arrest ?

Yes, got called today, Sep 1, 2014 telling us to call 202-506-9835 from a Julie Smith. When I called back, I highly suspected they were a fraud due to the accent, contents of what they said they were going to do to me, and the fact that I know I didn't owe the IRS any money.
My concern is that some people take this seriously and there is does not appear to be any agency anywhere that is trying to stop this junk

I received a call stating that I owed money and loans from a Ron w something..he also said that I would go to jail if I dud not comply and had me write out a full page letter...saying I will not attempt to avade or run from police... But when I told him I was willing to comply he completely switched up his story and stated that I could settle this matter with no jail time... And he also knew how much my bail was before I even saw a judge .. ridiculous

Well, what do you know? The robot woman just called my house and threatened me, too. Her number is (202) 241-4506, and it is a Magic Jack number supposedly from Wash D.C. IRS doesn't have time to call me. It's the Government and THEY DON'T CALL YOU. THEY MAIL YOU PAPER FIRST! I'm so glad their are so many smart citizens out there who know IT'S A SCAM!

Add another warning: They got to me today from 202-506-9220. Indian sounding, despicable people. When I asked for a case number he yelled at me and told me he was calling the police. What a sad little life.

I just got a missed call from the real IRS number 1-800-829-4477 but the voicemail advised me to call 202-470-5472. The phone number is out of order. The message stated I will be sued by the IRS for tax fraud and I needed to call back immediately.

A call from a man w/a thick heavy East Indian accent. Called to pretend he is an officer and I owe the IRS money and an arrest foe me. Left in my answering machine. He was using a Google Voice number on the caller Id. Washington CALL: 201-241-6169 and left a call back number of 202-506-9378. IRS SCAM

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE People, do not respond to these calls. They are FAKE. NEVER NEVER give your personal information over the phone to someone who has called you, and if someone claims to be the IRS or some other government agency, just hang up. They are not.53

I got a call today from 202-864-1252. its officer shawn white.he got mad when i asked about not getting anything in the mail.

I just received a voice mail today. Lady stating she was IRS and from the office of Julie Smith. Call back number was 202 506-9142. Caller ID stated name as Tim M Perry. Not calling it back.

Got a call from 202-506-9461. Said his name was Robert Williams. I am Indian and I know he wasn't Robert Williams. I took down all his information and asked him questions about what he knew about the IRS was and he kept repeating Internal Revenue Service and told me to look it up. He said I owed taxes and I was like F u I don't. I told him I was reporting him to the cops; he said go ahead. pretty ballsy because he doesn't live here in the US. I have filed a report on the IRS Impersonator scam online and blocked his number. But, I keep calling that number and trolling them :)

I received two voicemails. First from IRS "Officer Frank" who wanted me to contact him at "202 506 9459" to "avoid legal action". Broken English, foreign-sounding, noisy background. Second, two days later was a computer-generated voice saying they were IRS "Officer Julie Smith" demanding that I contact them at "415-251-5800" to avoid a "legal suit" being brought against me.

Fake IRS robo call from Julie Smith 202-241-0104.

Received the same call twice on a cell phone today.

Very threatening call from "Officer Franklin from the IRS" gave the call back number 202-864-1398.
