Fake IRS collectors are calling

This time of year is often taxing for many consumers. Scams aimed at stealing taxpayers’ money make the season more stressful.

The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) warns that crooks posing as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials are contacting people claiming they owe taxes. The caller demands a prepaid debit card, wire transfer or a credit card number for payment. If the person doesn’t comply, the caller threatens to arrest or deport the target, or take away their driver’s license or business.

Thousands of victims have lost money to these tax scam artists. But there are ways to recognize them and foil their attempts to steal your money.

These scammers often:

  • call you. But when the IRS contacts people about unpaid taxes, they do it by postal mail, not by phone
  • use common names and fake IRS badge numbers
  • know the last four digits of your Social Security number
  • demand payment via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS doesn’t ask for either of these payment methods, nor will they ask for credit card numbers.
  • rig caller ID information to appear as if the IRS really is calling
  • send fake emails that look like legitimate IRS correspondence
  • make a second call claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, rigging the caller ID information

To protect yourself from imposters who call, claiming to be from the IRS:

  • don’t provide any account or other personal information. Hang up the phone.
  • never wire money to a person or company you don’t know. Once you wire money, you can’t get it back.
  • if you owe - or think you owe - federal taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions. You also can visit the IRS website at
  • if you’ve already paid your taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
  • forward emails from the IRS to Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those emails.
  • file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at Include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint.

I have just received two phone calls from 419-701-3344 x 108, they are threatening and acting like I am doing something wrong for questioning them. An Indian accent and says he is a senior officer with the IRS and is notifying me to tell me that I am having a law suit filed against me by IRS, left message again yesterday name is supposedly Ron Walker, started looking online and came across this article and individuals with the same story, this is so wrong!!

Julie Smith just called this is the new number they are using

I got a call today also from a 202-239-xxxx number. They said they were from the IRS and sent me some certified letters, that I never received, that I had miscalculations on my tax return and were going to have the police arrest. I spoke to a "supervisor" and said I was looking at the internet and it was said to be a scam. Once I said that, he said he would have the police arrest me and hung up on me.

I too received a call-202-241-8332, claiming IRS was filing a lawsuit against me and that they had tried to reach me numerous times.

202-506-9461 Sam Taylor
I suspect he is Indian with his heavy accent tho I could understand him as he slowly enunciated every word. Please call back or with your attorney of record to his hotline at the Tax Litigation Dept. no mention of IRS. Don't try to disregard this message.

Has anyone actually answered the call or call back to find out the real deal? Curious...

Rec'd a call from Julie Smith claiming to be from the IRS with a time sensitive call. I was told to return call before "we take action on you." Of course I did not call back. Foreign accent. Call came from 202-241-7006 claiming to be a hotline #. Definitely a scam. I see from some of the comments below that this Julie Smith has called using other numbers.

I got 5 phone calls today from theses people

They called our house.. Foreign dialect gave us badge #, phone #'s, address, case file # all sounded legit. So happy I found this website...relief that it was a scam. I called our tax accountant and he responded immediately indicating that the IRS does not ask for payment over the phone or ever send anyone to take you to jail. They try to intimidate you to get your money...DONT FALL FOR THIS SCAM

Called my house today 10/2/14 on the West Coast using the same Julie Smith name and a 202 area code number out of DC. Scam.

I got a call today from Melwin Belcher said he is from IRS audit dept. He left a message saying there going to get an arrest warrant for me from the federal court. He also had a heavy Indian accent. I called the number and Bruce answered. He placed me on hold and checked what I beleieved to be a caller id, when he came back to the phone he said I am looking for Jill Stocker with this number. Just saw a posting here where someonr mentioned Melwins name. Here is the number that called me 571-526-0003. Beware of the scams!

giy a call from Jack Hooper. From the IRS Criminal division. 206-249-6406. I think it was a scam. Didn't call back. Not going to. If they want me they know where I live. I pay taxes every week. I know they could find me. So SCAM!!!

Julie smith called us from 202 241 8206, luckily I read this post. Looks like the 202 area code is a favorite

I received a message to Ms Smith urgently to avoid legal action. When I called 202-241-7165 a person with a very heavy Indian accent answer the call. Everything about this said SCAM. It was a Friday evening on a holiday weekend, enough said.

I just got off the phone with the "IRS" stating that I should have received a letter in the mail but now I had to pay or they would issue an warrant for my arrest. Their phone number is 818-945-4205 - Ymax Oration from Glendale, CA. Thick accent.

Computerized voice that sounded like the time recording lady's voice called and started to play before my answering machine started recording. Here is an exact transript: " of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. I am Officer (Julie or Cynthia?) Smith with the Internal Revenue Service. And the hotline to my position is 202-241-8711. I repeat it's 202-241-8711. Don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any action against you. Goodbye and take care."

This call was received first received at 11:42 am yesterday (10/15/14), and again today at 11:35 am. I would think anything valid regarding taxes or potential legal action would involve a written notice. Plus, doesn't it seem suspicious for the IRS tell you "take care"?

Thank you for the info. I thought it was a scam, but they might catch me on a day I'm not on the ball. I appreciate the information you provided.

They just called me and she went by Julie Smith. Number was (202) 241-8586. She said they would take legal action against me if I didn't call back. Seriously don't people have better things to do in life than mess with others!?

I got a very threatening call from Gaber at 206 451 5557 saying he was from the Washington IRS. Can't they catch these people and stop them? It seems easy. This phone number was tracked:Phone number: 206-451-5557

is located in Bainbridge Is, Washington.

Around 40% of people reported it as "Scammer"

"IRS" keeps saying this is their final call but I am asked to call 202 864-1298 and another caller (recording) asked that I call 02 864-1322 stating that this is the "IRS" final message and that I am being sued. Sheessshhh I am on a S!*% list!!! I wish the "IRS" really mean what they say when they say "final" !!

Called from 607-324-9846. Caller ID said New York. Message was IRS filing law suit and wanted us to call 202-864-1121. Didn't call back.. Don't want them to think I was going to bite.

I received a call from 202-241-8616 it was a automated message from Julie Smith Irs officer. It sounded fishy but I called it and someone with a heavy accent named "Frank" asked for my phone #. I gave it and they asked for my maiden name I've been married for sometime now. I asked what this was about and they hung up on me. I reported it on the real IRS website apparently this is pretty common scam right now. So don't give out any information to them.

I received a phone call this morning from a John Ryan, said I was being audited for 2008-2012 and that we owe money, said they sent irs agent to my home in August but now one was home, and they mailed us something in April...told me I could clear this all up over the phone, and If I didnt he would send a police officer to my home within 2 hours to arrest me for tax fraud then rattled off a bunch of other violations...he had a very heavy accent and the line was full of static. The number he called me from came up private, but in the beginning of the call he has asked for my husband and he wasnt home so he left a phone number of 202-241-7436. it was only when I asked the reason for the call and that I was his wife that he began to threaten me with all of this "criminal" stuff. I am on the phone with the IRS as I type this, and will follow up with filing a complaint with the aforementioned firm listed in this alert. Aside from the fact that I know we are honest people, this man was very convincing to me, so glad I did some digging before I went any further with this man. Ugh!!!!

Hi I also just received same call threatening an arrest warrant for irs - same modality as below - number 202 241 1046 name Jacob Smith showing on the line and a voicemail with an Indian accent for "officer ????" Answering.
Very annoyed to see it was a scam - scared myself and the kids.

wow! i just got a called from 202.864.1142 claiming that they are IRS and are filing a lawsuit against me due to my over balance of unpaid tax years from 2008-2012. I freaked out so i googled "IRS 202" and bam! i see nothing but blogs of FRAUD and SCAM!! be careful ya'll

415-506-1282 just called me and some guy told me I owe 2,405.

Got a call from officer Julie smith calling from its for payments the number is 1 (415) 506- 1286

got a call 10/28/14 saying a warrant was made out for me with the same crap. i live in fl. and they used this number 571-526-0009

Rec'd a call today from IRS threatening arrest for money fraud. Call came from Herndon, va. NUMBER was 571-526-0023. These people who do these scams if caught should be sent to jail for life.

i just got a call today from a Mike Davis at 202-727-0875. He had a very strong Indian accent could only understand that the purpose of the call was because he recieved legal petition with my name on it and the rest is to hard to understand other than don't ignore this call and to call back right away oh and the "thank you, have a blessed day" at the end of call. As soon as I heard that part I knew it was a scam. IRS never calls you. They send mailings of all contact. I asked my accountant. I won't call them back and if they call again I will play their mind games and report them. Idiots.

I just got a voicemail from them saying they are filing a lawsuit. Number was 1-630-933-9463. The number they gave me to call them back was 202-864-1223.

I just now got an automated call from a woman. They never said a name though. She did say "We have been trying to reach you. And we couldn't. Consider this your last notice. The IRS will be taking legal action against you. If you have any questions, please call....." And then she said a phone number. I haven't received any letters in the mail OR a phone call before this one!I am guessing this is a scam? I pay my taxes each year. So I don't understand why I would be owing any money. I'm really upset about this message. I am really hoping this is a scam? Oh and by the way, it was my home phone that was called. This is crazy!

Automated call telling me I had a case number & was being sued.

I got a call from a Kelly Smith today from a 202-241-8992 # saying she was from the IRS and that there was a lawsuit against me but never said my name. She also sounding foreign and when I called back it went to a voice mail that was full. This call freaked me out I am so glad that I found this web-site now I can sleep. I do not understand why the government cannot stop these people and why the corporation (YMax communications) that owns these numbers is not held responsible for the people using their numbers. I have also texted all of my family and friends to let them know about this scam. Hopefully they will keep it going and we can all put a stop to this bullsh@t..Now that I have said my peace I hope that this will help someone else.

The call came from a NY number: 917-524-2456 saying they would "sue me to the court house" if I didn't pay them a set fee.

got a call from a "June Smith" reportedly from IRS with message to call immediately and don't throw this away. It was so stupid...machine language..haha can't they atleast use a real voice...

Julie Smith is alive and well. Got the call yesterday.

I got a message from Justin Marks , a member of the IRS investigative team. The number was 716 279-6031.
I looked it up and it was a Ymax Oration number from Buffalo, NY.
He said that I was under investigation for violating the tax code, and that my address was under a federal investigation.
I know that I do not owe the IRS any money, and NO Federal Agency would EVER inform an individual that they are under investigation, they just do it and hope that the individual doesn't find out !
He had a thick accent and started mumbling about legal action but I had a hard time deciphering what he said.
I decided to mess with his mind, I called back that number yesterday and was going to tell him that I was an FBI agent from the Buffalo, NY office, and that he was the one under investigation for wire fraud and impersonating a Federal Agent. I was going to tell him that it is only a matter of time before we close in on him, and that when we catch him he is going to do big time in the Federal Pen. I was also going to suggest that he "cease and desist", and should bail out of the U.S. ASAP.
But, when I called that number (716-279-6031) I got a recording saying that "this is Brian Williams" (sounded hispanic), then the Ymax Oration carrier added that the "users mailbox was full".
Bummer, I really wanted to shock this person with the same type of threats that he does to so many people.
These people that perpetrate these scams are the ultimate evil, preying on gullible seniors who don't understand how mean that scammers can be.
If we catch these perps, we should lock them in a very small box, chained to the cold concrete floor and sprayed with cold water every hour until they shiver to death.

I have a voice message stating that the IRS/Internal Revenue Service has been trying to reach me and that this is their final call. They also stated that the IRS is filing a law suit against me and to call them immediately at 202-864-1223. I will also report this to my State Attorney General.

Got a call this morning on my cell phone from an automatic voice that Said "This was the last time the IRS was going to contact me before filing a suit against me unless they get more information from me." WHAT? My heart sank, my head started hurting and I started balling. What is this all about and When did they contact me the 1st time or the 2nd time? I'm a single mom and the only thing my son has so when people pull this crap, as a mom my first thought is my son and how this would effect him but I knew I haven't done anything wrong, but in that first second or 2 before you realize it's most likely a scam, your terrified!!! I tried several times to call the numbers back but The #'s that called me and the # they gave me were 2 different numbers and when I call back the 1-845-469-9827 # is busy and the # they gave me 1-202-864-1220 is a long pause then sounds like it's a cell phone type of call, then it rings once or twice then says all circuits are busy to call back. Is this the IRS? No name was given in the automatic VoiceMail so how do I know the call was for me? I know I don't owe any taxes but it's still a scary situation and it's disturbing to say the least. Isn't there anything the FBI or GBI or IRS can do about these people that are doing this? How do I know if this is real or not?

The IRS will never call you to ask for information or money, but if you want to confirm if this is really the IRS calling you, you should call them directly and ask. Here's more information about how to contact the IRS.

One Kelly Parker called on August 23, 2014 202-241-7534 and I got another call again yesterday November 12, 2014 on phone number 202-503-9946. The caller was giving me a last call before filing a lawsuit against me.

Got a voicemail message from 710-201-2226 stating the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me and to call this number back immediately. I called and it stated that the person I am trying to reach is not available and to leave a message.....I did not. Instead looked up and found this site.

Called our house this morning and left a msg. The number is/was 571-335-8498, which is Virginia, said his name was Officer Kenneth something or other as I couldn't understand his voice due to the accent. Googled the number and the issue and discovered it is a scam. Be careful out there!

Officer Julie Smith called my cell this AM and left a half cut off recording: (202)241-8003

I just received this call 3 times today, they actually left a message on my VM, stating she was Officer Julie smith, claiming they were going to take action against me, for owing back taxes. The phone number came from 415-506-1303, Novato California. Obviously, it's VOIP number. I am reporting this and double dawg dare someone to call me back again today!!! Three times in one day, is harassment!!

Just got a call from someone saying they are Amy Brown, Badge ID 40251, from phone number 202-759-9432. She verbally bullied me when I said I was a law-abiding citizen: she asked "who told you that? A police officer? A judge?" It was awful. I was told that within 45 minutes of the end of the call I would be arrested, my bank accounts would be frozen, and all of my assets would be seized.

Got 2 calls from Julie Smith. 2nd one threatened action.

I received a message on my voicemail the other day that went something like this:
Hi this is Steve Robinson with the Dept. of Legal Affairs. This message is for "my name". The reason I am calling is to inform you that an action has been started against your name. Please call back at 909-237-5919 as a failure to do so could result in a real legal mess for you. Be advised that if you call back you should retain an attorney. I look forward to hearing from you soon and until then, Have a Blessed Day!
I did a reverse phone number search to see where the call came from. It was in Anaheim, Chino Hills, Diamond Barr, CA

Called me from 585-444-7129

Thangsgiving eve,i recieved a voice mail from,Julie Smith, saying you must honor this call or else will be out for you.I called,a guy answered asked whats your Account Number,i told him i had it high and low.I told him i have high technology that has connected me to your home-base,he hung up fast.
