Fake IRS collectors are calling

This time of year is often taxing for many consumers. Scams aimed at stealing taxpayers’ money make the season more stressful.

The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) warns that crooks posing as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials are contacting people claiming they owe taxes. The caller demands a prepaid debit card, wire transfer or a credit card number for payment. If the person doesn’t comply, the caller threatens to arrest or deport the target, or take away their driver’s license or business.

Thousands of victims have lost money to these tax scam artists. But there are ways to recognize them and foil their attempts to steal your money.

These scammers often:

  • call you. But when the IRS contacts people about unpaid taxes, they do it by postal mail, not by phone
  • use common names and fake IRS badge numbers
  • know the last four digits of your Social Security number
  • demand payment via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS doesn’t ask for either of these payment methods, nor will they ask for credit card numbers.
  • rig caller ID information to appear as if the IRS really is calling
  • send fake emails that look like legitimate IRS correspondence
  • make a second call claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, rigging the caller ID information

To protect yourself from imposters who call, claiming to be from the IRS:

  • don’t provide any account or other personal information. Hang up the phone.
  • never wire money to a person or company you don’t know. Once you wire money, you can’t get it back.
  • if you owe - or think you owe - federal taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions. You also can visit the IRS website at irs.gov.
  • if you’ve already paid your taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
  • forward emails from the IRS to phishing@irs.gov. Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those emails.
  • file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint. Include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint.

I had the same guy named George with an Indian accent that called me 3 times today. He finally left a message saying that he's calling from Crime Investigation Department of Internal Revenue Service. He said that they received a legal petition of my name under my social security number. He also mentioned that before this matter go into the court house....Then he took another call and his message got cut off with him answering another call. The sound quality was cutting in and out as well like he was on a cell phone or using an internet call service.

I called the actual IRS just to double check if anything is pending or something came up with my return. I was told by the actual agent that it's more likely a SCAM and she can't find anything.

The phone number that came up 3 times was 911 which was totally weird because why would someone call me from that number? Also, this morning there was a number from 1 800 829 1040. When you call that number it says "Welcome to the Internal Revenue Service". Not sure if this number is from the actual IRS people or not. BE AWARE!

Franklin Benjamin called tonight 4/16 from NY! Left phone msg! Wouldn't answer return call to the # 347-559-0378.... gave 888-887-2003 as call back # for IRS

Received 3 calls from David Bell saying he was an IRSAgent and to please return his call. He said it was urgent that I get beck with him all of the calls came from 585-633-1792...please beware of this type of call! If you call the number no one answers.

I have had David Bell call as well as someone called Heta Grave, same phone number.

Threatening legal action with respect to our income tax. These people should be stopped!!!

I received the same call from 1-888-886-2632 claiming a legal action is pending from IRS. It was on my voicemail. Heavy Indian accent, of course I knew this scam so did not bother to return the call.

I just had the same call from 888-886-2632. A lady with heavy Indian accent said a legal action is pending from IRS.

Got three calls from someone claiming to be the "IRS." They sounded Hindu and one said his name was Sebastian. The calls were from three different numbers, (866) 341-3140, (347) 559-0375, and (347) 559-0378. They said I needed to wire them 2500$ in the next 15 minutes and not to tell my husband.

Received a voice message from 888-909-8081. Saying David Michael, from IRS stating that they received a legal affidavit and a legal case file against my name and my identity and I'm under investigation. There are three federal charges filed against me.
And asked me to call back this number.
This is a fake number which I googled and figured out. Please be aware, this is scam.

I also received a phone call from Ofc. David Michael left the phone number 888-909-8081, but when I looked at my caller ID it said 386-947-9010. That was my first tip off, and like you I'm glad I went to Google to research this before calling the number back. Beware everyone!!! Criminals are getting more desperate by the day.

I got call from 1-888-909-8081 telling calling from IRS, lot of penalties & all bullshit.

I got a call from 888 909 8081 today and 202 517 0464 yesterday. I picked up the phone straight away on the call from 202 517 0464, but the caller left a voice message both times. The 888 909 8081 caller had an Indian accent, and knew my wife's name.

Call saying they are the IRS investigating fraud and to call back or will be arrested. Call back number 571-308-2451

I JUST RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM #877-827-3687 WHERE A GUY NAME JUSTIN TOLD ME THAT I DID FRAUD WITH THE IRS AND THAT IF I DONT CALL HIM BACK IN AN HOUR THE POLICE WITH COME TO GET ME, MY TAXES HAVE BEEN DOME THE SAME WAY IN PAST YEARS. THIS IS FRAUD.

Someone from the phone number 415-251-8080 called my brother claiming that my brother owes taxes. So, I look this number up and lo and behold this number is a total scam. Hopefully a police officer or someone working with the authorities arrest this scammer. It is totally unwarranted.

I received several calls on 16-April and 17-April from 888-918-1021, 813-920-7522 and 408-927-8111. The same guy each time with an Indian accent, asking for my wife.

I simply told him to stop making these scam calls and hung up. After the 7th call I swore at him in Indian (I am Indian) and he replied right back with choice profanities in the same language!!

I just want everyone to know that Indian citizens are also being targeted, especially women.

I have reported these numbers at the FTC complaint site and hope these guys are caught and brought the full force of the law.

I was in love with Indian people till I got victimized last week! No one can stop this guy!

I got the call this morning named "Danny" telling me I owe the IRS. They had all my info, San, mailing address, work info. They told me I have an option to pay via electronic to a designated place close to my zip code or my license will be suspended, lien on my house and police will be arresting me in couple of hours. I did my research by going to the local police dept, calling the irs and going to my bank to verify this claim was true BUT it Wasn't! This is a scam please be aware!

Got a scam call today 4/17/2014. Received an automated message on my home phone stating: "I need you or your legal retained representative, this is Officer Heather from the Internal revenue service, this is time-sensitive information, do not ignore this phone call before we take legal allegation against you. Call 202-506-9418 to speak to an IRS agent now, Good bye and take care, press 1 to speak to an IRS agent now."
We know this is a phony call because we just sent our tax papers in a few days ago and the real IRS never works THAT fast. Its probably still in their mailroom unopened!
"Let God be true and every man a liar." (Romans 3)
"...and ALL liars will have their part in the lake of fire. This is the second death" (Revelation

I am getting this crank calls from 1-888-886-2632 and other 888 numbers. He left 3 VM. My wife was delirious. Finally I talked and just laced into him. Same stuff, I am involved in fraud and owe money to IRS and they are filing a case. I know this is a phone scam. As soon as I said that I am informing higher authorities, he hung up. I will now see if they call again, if so I will inform the police.

How do they have our information ? This is something the IRS / gov need to track and put these folks behind bars. !!!!

Got a call from 415-251-8361 - again with a man with an Indian accent. Threatened with a court summon and arrest. Everybody block this number.

On April 17, someone calling from 202-241-0583 left me a voice mail calming they were from the IRS and that it was very important that I call them back and not to ignore them. When I tried calling the phone would ring; then I would get a busy signal. This morning when I called the number someone with a heavy accent answered "Investigations" and when I asked "Investigations for what" they hung up.

Guys watch out for 2027512558.

These guys sound very legit but they aren't. They gave a extension 9924, and a "badge number" 166209

I got a robotic-like voice saying this is officer Heather from the IRS and that I had to call her back urgently because the issue is "extremely time sensitive" and we need to talk " before we take any legal allegations against you." The voice was weird and the English was strange. The number is also originating from a 415-251-8453 under the company name of Ymax Comms Corp. This company seems to have a link with Magic Jack.

Received the call today. Asking me to pay $4000. He said I only have 45 mins to settle my dispute or the arrest warrant on my name will be issued. # was 2024596028 (DC, USA).

I rec'd call from 571-308-2451 - said his name is Sebastian Hobbs with IRS and that I owed taxes & if I did not pay a warrant for my arrest would be issued, and more.... BE AWARE & don't even talk to them! I reported the incident!

Just received a call from. 202-280-7316. Said he was with the internal revenue. But would have to call me back he just got really busy. I am so ready for the next call. He will think twice before calling me

I had two messages left on my land line with similar threats as above. My guy was Kevin Peterson and his accent was minimal. Beware, not all of these folks sound like they are from India. The number I was supposed to call back was 571-308-2451. Reported it on two government sites.

What's with these new scare tactic phone callers. Second call from this guy, first time a few weeks back I hung up on him when he tried to claim they sent me notices about my so called violation. Today same guy (sounded like exact same accent) actually left a message to call Kevin Marshall at 202-241-2073 immediately to "take care" of it. Called FTC to report it but you were closed. I feel a little better knowing I'm not alone but it still isn't right and I want these guys in jail for fraud!

I know It was a telemarketer. Caller ID #202-506-9044 Washington DC.

How can I get in touch with person I talked with on April 14 at1:45P.M.about a scam letter I received??

Monday - April 21, just before my lunch break and I received a call from 'JAY ADAMS" of the IRS saying I have a Tax Deficiency and I was instructed to call "MICHAEL CARTER" an Investigating Officer at (415) 251-8361 ASAP to discuss my case #936443 or have my Atty. call them or settle the amount owed by the following day or else IRS will arrest me. The 1st & 2nd person I spoked with have a heavy accent (seems from India or similar country). After a phone call with my CPA - found out this is a BIG SCAM.

A woman called claiming to be from the IRS and told my husband he would be arrested and taken to jail for non payment of taxes. 202-506-9084 that's the number she called from and said her name was Karen Peterson, she spoke with an accent and we could barely understand what she was saying. We filed a report with the police and credit report company's.

I received a call stating that I had a legal petition against me from the IRS. The man said his name was Franklin Benjamin from the Internal Revenue Service. I should call him back at 888-887-2003 but the number he was calling from was New York 347-559-0378.

got a call from 415-251-8453, claiming to be the IRS and threatening that I must call immediately or they would "take legal allegations" against me. Hah!! But I am worried about others who could fall for this scam. Can't this number be traced and the people prosecuted?

202-506-9044

Looks like they're leaving messages now and utilizing a number prompt system to make you believe it's legit. Do not press "1" to speak to someone. They are posing as the IRS. Showed up on caller ID as a Cellular Call.

Never called them back.

Indian man called our house and asked to call him back 202-280-2316. Same as other calls "The very second you receive this message, I need you, or your retained attorney of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My name is Shawn ??? , and (not understandable) is 202-280-2316. I repeat it's 202-280-2316, and if you don't return the call, and I don't hear from your attorney, either, then the only thing I can do is wish you a good luck, as the situation unfolds onto you. Goodbye.

I called back and he answered IRS! I told him to stop calling.

*** Please get these bozos...

Got a message yesterday, Andy Gibson (with Indian accent) @ 213-375-0953 (US Treasury Dept) called and informed me of an important legal issue and law enforcement is envolved. I needed to call them back.
Caller called back today, the phone rang once (he hung up), this happened 2 more time. On the 4th I answered, he was shocked and hung up. I reported him to the FTC!

My mother received a call from them and she's extremely gullible. She spent all night gathering taxes from the last 10 year and she really though she's going to jail. Not sure why she didn't call me yesterday, instead she called me today after a sleepless night and many tears. It's such a shame that they attack older people who believe everyone.

I got a call today from (415)-251-8453. The voice was a woman's voice and very robotic sounding. They left a message on my ans. machine saying the message was for me or my attorney of record, and they had time sensitive information. They also said they were the Internal Rev. Service and I should call back the number given and ask for.......Agent Heather. Oh yeah, I am sure the IRS has someone walking around going by that name! Of course if I didn't call back they said I would be forcing them to take further action.

I got a call from the same number same robotic voice and name. I took no action.
