Fake IRS collectors are calling

This time of year is often taxing for many consumers. Scams aimed at stealing taxpayers’ money make the season more stressful.

The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) warns that crooks posing as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials are contacting people claiming they owe taxes. The caller demands a prepaid debit card, wire transfer or a credit card number for payment. If the person doesn’t comply, the caller threatens to arrest or deport the target, or take away their driver’s license or business.

Thousands of victims have lost money to these tax scam artists. But there are ways to recognize them and foil their attempts to steal your money.

These scammers often:

  • call you. But when the IRS contacts people about unpaid taxes, they do it by postal mail, not by phone
  • use common names and fake IRS badge numbers
  • know the last four digits of your Social Security number
  • demand payment via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS doesn’t ask for either of these payment methods, nor will they ask for credit card numbers.
  • rig caller ID information to appear as if the IRS really is calling
  • send fake emails that look like legitimate IRS correspondence
  • make a second call claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, rigging the caller ID information

To protect yourself from imposters who call, claiming to be from the IRS:

  • don’t provide any account or other personal information. Hang up the phone.
  • never wire money to a person or company you don’t know. Once you wire money, you can’t get it back.
  • if you owe - or think you owe - federal taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions. You also can visit the IRS website at
  • if you’ve already paid your taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
  • forward emails from the IRS to Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those emails.
  • file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at Include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint.

got a call from 202-241-2037 (washington dc) this morning stating that the irs was "filing a lawsuit against me for tax evasion" it was a voice recording asking me to call back the same number. scam.

The fake IRS called today and left a message. The Indian accent also gives it away. 240-624-4686 I called this number and let them know fraud is a a bad thing. He hung up on me. Please someone go after them.

Got a call from 877-103-0213 recorded voice said social security locked my benefits. Said press 1 for their legal department.
Tried to report it but after 30 minutes was told the office is closed.
Waste of time.

Fake call from 202-241-7907, sheriff is coming etc....

It happened to me as well. I am an International student.
He claimed to be calling from TIGTA. Used the name as Jimmy Arthur and claimed to be the investigating officer on my case. He asked for $1650 through Google Play cards. This one was with proper American Accent. He scared the hell out of me. The number he used was 845-627-1487, number's from Clarkstown, NY. I must say he was a real professional and I am pretty sure that he is been doing it for a long time. Is there way to catch such people??

Fake tax collectors from 585-633-2307. Don't act.

I just received a scam phone call from an East Indian man claiming to be from the IRS. The phone number was 415-688-6287 and initially called me with an automated message saying that the IRS had filed a lawsuit against me and that this was the last attempt to call me. It asked me to call the exact same number back. When I did, the man answered and asked me to write down his name: "Alex Cooper" and badge number "GS560172" as well as my case ID: "DC1928". He then asked me not to interrupt him as he explained the charges against me. After listening, I asked him how he got my name and phone number (which I find to be quite alarming), however this question seemed to really knock him off his game. I told him that I did not list my phone number on my tax records so the IRS should not have my phone number to contact me. He became quite hostile and warned me that the authorities would be coming to my door to arrest me shortly and suggested I hire a defense lawyer. I asked him again how he got my number and he continued to be quite hostile however said that he had "done his job to alert me" then hung up the phone. Please do not be tricked into this scam! And for the actual authorities, please track this man down and shut down this awful scam. I am horrified at the thought of people being tricked by this and paying money to this man thinking they will be getting help.

The scam continues. When I was threatened with arrest, I responded in excited voice, Really, I have never been arrested before! He continued to explain that they would be at my door to arrest me after we hung up. I continued to pose question. Would they be local police or federal officers? Where was the warrant issued? If they drive all the way from DC to arrest me, I should have some refreshments for them. When I asked if they were going to put leg shackles on me since I was an escape risk, he hung up on me.

I did not receive a phone call but got an email in regards to what most people have commented about previously. It went to my spam folder but what caught my attention was the subject line stating to quote "LAW SUIT CASE FILE - 302#40"

The person sending this email is "FEDERAL OFFICER FRANK MILLER" from email address: acs. inc. legal. departmentt@
The email has my SSN number in it which I have left out -- but I am providing the contents of the email below:

Got a call from (202) 528-8001 (Washington, D.C.). It was a recording say that there was a lawsuit against me & I owed the IRS taxes & was facing fines/jail time. I was very confused how such a ting could happen, so I pressed "1" to connect. Spoke to officer "James Cooper" (had a heavy accent) who stated that his ID is #IRM25869. James told me I made multiple mistakes on my taxes from 2012 - 2016 & owed $7,900. He did a good job scaring me, telling me not to interrupt when I expressed my confusion & threatening to send law enforcement. He transferred me to his supervisor, John (another heavy accent) who threatened me with being arrested when I asked how such mistakes could happen. When he could not answer directly, I asked if I could call back. John said he would immediately dispatch the police if I disconnected. He asked me if I committed the fraud intentionally or by mistake then asked to verify my bank account balance in order to prove it was an honest mistake. It was then that I hung up, slowly realizing this was fraud. They attempted to call me again TWICE from (202) 239-0097, which I ignored. I called the IRS afterwords who confirmed there is nothing owed on my account. Learned from many sources that the IRS will contact via mail, not phone call, anyways. Please don't let those scare tactics work on you! Those horrible fraudsters will pressure you into giving away your personal information or money.

got a couple calls from michelle white in monotone voice about tax fraud against me #402 509 8066. threatening to call police on me

got a call from a so called IRS officer from this number 973-798-8358. Said his name was Lee Wilson, Badge number GS10079 and my document number was DC2865. Said I owed back taxes for 2012-2016. of 7 thousand and some dollars. I hung up on him for I know it was a scam was trying to get all the imformation about him as I could.

I just Received mine this morning. The first middle eastern individuals name was Tony Weldom, and his "Supervisors" name was John Miller. I entertained the conversation for a while with a condescending attitude, which made him really angry. As he threatened the the local sheriffs office would come to my home address and pick me up if i didnt hand the matter at hand, i asked for someone who was over him, and he stated that there wasnt anyone higher. So i asked him, in that whole office representing the IRS, there are only two of you in there.... And he was dumb enough to say "yes". After i called his bluff and hung up, i called the number back five minutes after and it kept saying the number i was trying to reach is busy. NOT EVEN 30 MINUTES LATER, I receive another call and VM about a Microsoft with the same MO.

Just had a call from Dennis Grey at 918-937-4749 reporting that I need to "Call back at the earliest convenience to avoid legal proceedings." Automated voice..

I just returned a call to 202-991-9365 and spoke to a "Jonathan Carter" with a very heavy Indian accent. He supposedly works for the Department of Treasury Revenue Dept. and told me I've been trying to defraud the United States and that I owe $7987 in taxes, penalties and legal charges. The problem is that he had my full name and my full address. That worries me, as I'm wondering where he may have got it. Once he started threatening jail and arrests and 15 years in prison, I told him "I know it's a scam, so I'm doing no such thing." Seeing so many posts of similar situations, it's obvious there's a ring and they have many numbers, probably what they call burner phones that can't be traced, so even if they wanted to, they couldn't track them down. It's a shame that they prey on vulnerable people that many not know any better and they defraud them of hard-earned money. I sincerely hope they're caught and arrested.

Just received Robocall claiming to be IRS. They stated they had been trying to contact us for 6 months and now they will have to charge us with fraud on our tax return.

Just got a call on my cell phone from Jennifer Watson (thick Indian accent) stating she was calling from the Department of the Treasury, Inspector General's Office. She stated I was under federal investigation and to call her back at (202)792-9845. Obviously fraud.

call from Officer Jody Wills Federal Court House law suit against me and a warranty filled for me advised to call Social Security 833-357-5092

I am getting these annoying phone calls at least once a day now. My (officer) is Robert Morris. Asked for my address. I told him if he was arresting me he should know all that info. He got mad. Tried to report to authorities acted like there really is nothing to do...ugh.

My brother got a call from a 865-238-5465 number and the guy named "John Watson" answered w/ an Indian accent. He said he worked for a lawyers office. I told him that I got the call and he asked my name and zip code so I fudged my name and gave him a fake zip code. He said that I should've been contacted by the police department because I owed back taxes from 2011-2017. Keep in mind. He called my brother..not me. I acted worried and asked what I should do. He said I needed to get a lawyer and go to courthouse because charges were being filed against me. He kept asking me though what I thought about the call in general and I still acted worried. Needless to say I just hung up on him. This is just nuts. These ppl to get go get a life instead of harassing others.

This scam is STILL going on - almost 2 years after first comment. Robert Morris called me and left a message - all the same as above - "before I get arrested or end up in federal claims court yada yada..." 410-656-6279 I get calls like this almost daily

Just recieved 2 voicemails from officer Robert Morris. One from and unknown caller and one from #510-897-6328. He sounded like a robot recording and instructed me to call back or they will take action with an arrest.

message stated that i had a legal petition notice against me for tax fraud, before getting arrested to please call 818-924-0513 and get in contact with Officer Robert Morris from IRS

Got a VM from Robert Morris and called the number back already knowing it was a scam. An Indian guy answers, doesn't identify himself or the 'agency' he works for and asks me to, "Help him out," by giving him my information. I replied, "Sure, just tell me where you are located so I can help the real IRS find you."

He disconnected the call...

Same message repeated every day for a month now. Automated voice saying I am part of a fraud against me involving the IRS from Officer Robert Norris

Got an automated voicemail just a few minutes ago:

House or before you get arrested. Please call immediately on our department number 646-693-1131. Make sure you call us as soon as possible. Again this is officer Robert Morris from the Internal Revenue Service.

Haven't they figured out that people have caught on. When is something going to be done.

Received a phone call from 518-241-3504 with a automatic voice message stating this is my final notice from criminal investigation unit of the IRS. Reason of this call is to inform that the the IRS is filing a law suit against me due to tax evasion. What a scam.

Robert Morris called me and left a message - "before I get arrested or end up in federal claims court..."

The phone call came up on my cell phone's caller ID as a United Kingdom phone number: +44 324 148 30 and the voicemail number was: 1-443-241-4830 (Westminster, MD).

I guess it is that time of season for IRS scams...

I also received that voicemail. Except it was from the phone number (917) 504-8559 (from New York). Pretty sure if it were real then they wouldn't use an automated voice. Good thing I never answer unrecognized numbers.

IS there a place to report all the different phone numbers they use to tortur people with treats about Social Security suspended and others treats...877-897-0608, 888-389-2571, 844-872-4683, 877-253-8597.

Received automated call from 802-552-3108 (Montpelier, VT) stating I was being sued by the IRS for tax fraud and for me to return the call. I'm tired of all these robo calls coming to my cell phone.
