Is that debt collector for real?

It’s stressful enough getting calls from debt collectors for bills you actually owe. But if you’ve ever been harassed and threatened for debts you’ve never even heard about, let alone accrued, it can be downright harrowing – and quite possibly illegal.

Today, the FTC announced that a U.S. district court has temporarily halted a Georgia-based operation from using deception and threats to collect millions in phantom payday loan “debts.”  The FTC says Williams, Scott & Associates and company president John Williams lied and threatened people to pay on debts they didn’t owe – or debts the company didn’t have the authority to collect.

According to the FTC, the debt collectors claimed to be federal and state agents, investigators, or members of a government fraud task force, or they pretended to be with a law firm.  They falsely told consumers their driver’s licenses would be revoked and that they faced immediate arrest and imprisonment if they didn’t pay up.  How did the debt collectors even know to contact those consumers?  The FTC says many of the people had inquired about a payday loan online at one time and submitted contact information, which the company later got its hands on.  The case is pending in federal court in Atlanta.

Don’t get intimidated by a bullying bill collector – real or fake.  Any debt collector impersonating a law enforcement officer or threatening you with immediate arrest if you don’t pay up is violating federal law.

If you think a caller may be a fake debt collector:

  • Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller you won’t discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." If the caller refuses, don’t pay.
  • Put your request in writing. If you have the caller’s address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) requires any debt collector to stop calling if you ask them to in writing.
  • Don’t give or confirm with the caller any personal, financial, or other sensitive information. Fake debt collectors, and other scammers, can use your information to commit identity theft and other crimes.
  • Contact your creditor.  If a debt is legitimate – but you think the collector isn’t – contact your creditor.  Tell them about the suspicious call and ask who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
  • Report the call. File a complaint with the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA.

There is a way to tell law enforcement about calls you're getting.

Report them to the FTC at The details you give will go into a secure database that local, state and federal law enforcement use for investigations.

I also got calls a few months ago (that stopped) from an "Investigator". I looked up their number (through a paid service) and it was coming from a house in TX. Texas state law says you must have a bond in place to be a debt collector. They have public records for real debt collection agencies online, but this guy wasn't listed.
I have his address if the FTC is interested.

You can help law enforcement by reporting this to You can give as much detail as you ahve about the caller. The information will go into a secure database that law enforcement uses for investigations nationwide.

I received an email from some one stating they were with FinCen. Lisa Lawson was the name. They wante to pay an obscene amount of money and send it by MoneyGram to a Dino Cruz. Does any one know of this is legit?

The real FinCen is the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network within the US Department of the Treasury. If a person from the federal government contacted you, they would have a federal government email that ended in '.gov' with no other letters after that.  FinCen works with financial institutions, not individual people.

If someone calls you and asks you to send money by wire transfer, it's probably a scam. This FTC article tells about different scams that involve wiring money.

I've been threatened by a fake magazine scammer threatening me with a funny looking letter from some place caller Service center of north America. Threatening me that they will contact a debt collector if i dont pay them. The address on the letter is fake and on the BBB website warning people that they are scammers. The address they gave me was 11 north water street suite 10290 which on the BBB web site staing its a fake loction and not to trust them. When i found out that i was being scammed i reported my debit card lost and got sent a new one. Im pretty sure their so called debt collector is either one of them or another scammer trying to trick me out of my money. Because they wont give me an address associated with the magazine.Im glad to have read yalls experiences so I know to ignore all calls i dont recognize. Because they want the money for themselves theyre not going to go through a real debt collector because addresses phone numbers and iidentification numbers will have to be verified and they are not going to do that. I have been nervous and scared all weekend because i didnt want them to arrest me or send me to court. There are so many people scamming others with magazine subscriptions and pressuing them to pay or else. Don't fall for this do your research. The scamming company only got my phone number, address, and debit card number no ssn or anything else and ive reported the card lost to keep them from charging and leaking my info with other mag scammers and because they refused to cancel my subscription. I hope this dosent happen to you.

Had any one heard of John Mark Attorney me today said I going to be arrested for a delt 1,498.88 theif.I ask him what was it he said a consumer debt.said I was going to be arrested at work home here are some more numbers they been calling me from 336-9072084,240-7674787.I told them my bankruptcy just got off my report last month character 13

They keep calling my in-laws and myself about my husband. They've been calling for months and have threatened multiple times to have him served. It's never happened and he doesn't have any outstanding bills. Dont fall for it! If they happen to call from a number that isn't restricted, keep calling them. They'll eventually stop answering and let it go to voicemail. This is what i do. it's so much fun!

Wow, so I recieved a call last week from a 844 number claiming they were from "Pittman and Law" out of Los Angeles. They told me they were about to send out a police officer to my address with a warrant from some unpaid overdraft from Fifth Third from 2012. At first I was freaked, which is a normal response. Frankly, it's sickening that these people just use these tactics to scare innocent consumers, but anyways.... I was then given another 844 number and a "case number". I called and the first few times they hung up on me then I got to a "Mr. Rubio" my apparent case manager. He told me I owed Fifth Third 1,200 and they would settle for 800$. I told him I would call him back by the end of the day and he said I better or else I would be arrested. He must of given me his cell because it was a working 310(L.A.) number when I called back. (Later). After that I immediately went to fifth third, they said there was nothing like that, and there was an overdraw in 2012 but I paid it that year. I knew it was bs so I called Mr. Rubio back and told him to leave me alone or I would report him.
I didn't get a call til today - 909 247 3201 - same voice as the first time and same threats for cops. I asked him why he didn't send one last week, and he said, "to be polite to you", I then asked him for a certified letter, or his address, and he replied "it doesn't work like that mam'" HA. Okay, buddy. It's no surprise I then cussed at him, asked him to leave me alone and told him I knew he was lying. He then got angry and threatened me more. I'm worried because they have my last 4, and my number.... I have no identity worth stealing, but still. This is wrong!!!

I was contacted today and threatened with arrest for intent to defraud. From CFS.
I was told they were a mediation company.Avery coming to my senses and talking to a relative who said the same thing happened to her. But I had already given them muy information bank, email, and address and agreed to pay a little each Month on.a 590 debt. I keep telling him I had no idea who the business was and had never recieved the money because ive been on Disability since 2005 nor have in had an account with the bank he claimed the money was deposited in since 2005. I have filed bankruptcy which has since been dismissed! What do I do now?

If you gave someone your bank account information they can take money from your account. Call your bank and explain what happened. Ask them what to do about your account and how to keep your account safe.

This FTC article tells you some of the tricks fake debt collectors use.

This article about debt collection tells about your rights. It explains what a legitimate debt collector is allowed to do, and what he can't do.

I received a call from a Paul SD "I owed the IRS 25 thousand dollars if I did not pay he was going to release the claim to the Marshalls and they where going to go to my house, give me the Warrent for my arrest and arrest me. He said I was a defalter for the yrs 2013, 2014, 2015 & they send me a letter in Dec. 2016. Gave me his ID# & phone (814)245-1011, he also gave me a claim #

I was scared & crying I told the guy to give me a second. When to talk to my Boss explain what was happening My Boss sd yo me it'S a scam. Shee got my cell phone said Hello, Hello the guy hag up.

They are still trying to scan people. Be careful

I received a phone message from this individual (unknown phone number) who has now used two different names but its the same voice when I tried to call back. He left a number to call back in which I did and got "Tom" or "Bob" phone number is 619-863-4328 which is in San Diego. He is claiming to serve me with a complaint and the "resident address" I disclosed. He gave me a Reference "Case Number" 193CA054 US. which is not a case number of any CA courts at least not in San Diego. He wants to call his "client" at that number (which is himself again) and answer National Mediation Group but on the voice message says hes with National Carriers. He has threaten to "serve" me until I sign and pay. Pay what? I dont know??? Its seems on here that the last name "Thomas" is being used as a common link to these scammers.

Now i have fake calls coming through.i block them..look them getting really annoyed..this united court services is so going to get on your website you suggested and give allnthe info to you.i will not send payment to a po box..or make it by phone.i keep rereading this fake has a fake seal..states liens and garnishments..used municipal court..sherriffs office..county did NOT list my ftc rights..have a copy of original loan!.i have a statement of paid in full account closed..nov 2013..did my homework..hus domain expires..after a year..typical scammer...i even got his home number..physical have read so many complaints about united court services in westminister california its crazy....what is the website to send everything to you again??i even have his ip address..server..all of it..along with google earth pics of his house and truck...a friend of mine git the same so sick if this..come to find out his payday loan store where he worked closed..he had access to a ton if info through the sytems..

These people did me the same way. Never sent anything to my address but always emailed me and tnreatned me. Enough is enough

802-865-1492 calls me and leaves harassing threatening voice mails of asset seizure and jail time if i don't call back and pay a fake payday loan and gave a case number.
Completely fake and illegal!

These are useful details for a complaint. Please report this to the FTC at The information you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations. The comments you put here on the blog don't go into the law enforcement database.

I just got a call today that said a court order against me and I had a case # and that I needed to appear in court. The address they had on file it was sent back. So strange I have been divorced and no longer using that name for 11 years. I just moved your going to tell me it took that long to find me. I was at my last address for 14 years. I can't wait till he calls again. Going to ask him for his information.

I have been called repeatedly by the Weinberg Mediation Group at 844-738-7904 claiming I owe on a debt I settled years ago. They refuse to send verification of the debt by mail and refuse to verify their legal standing. Tried to threaten me with legal action. Please.

Dispute the debt in writing. If you think you don’t owe the debt, send the collector a letter disputing it. Be as specific as possible about why you think the debt is wrong – but give as little personal information as possible.

By law, the collector then must stop contacting you – though the debt doesn’t go away. But, if the collector sends you written verification of the debt, they can start contacting you again.

And, if there’s incorrect information on your credit report, dispute that, too. You can use these sample letters, using the address given in your credit report.

I received a call from these same ppl threatening me with legal action

I received a call from these same ppl threatening me with legal action

I got a call on my cell phone from 325-896-4246 - a Texas number exactly a week ago.

They specifically asked for my husband by his unmarried name. I thought it was weird that they'd call him on my cell but they seemed to have a lot of information about him so I had no reason to think it was not legit. I pretended to be him and they said that he was going to receive legal papers tomorrow because he was being sued for an unpaid loan. I asked for the name of the lender and they said that I should call 855-455-9003 to see who was suing me. I did and got a woman allegedly named Marie Davis. She told me that they a collections company representing the parent company PERSONAL CASH ADVANCE and that I (my husband) was going to receive pre-litigation papers tomorrow as he was being named the defendant in a civil suit for a payday loan he received in 2011. The woman could not tell me the name off the specific subsidiary that he allegedly borrowed money from. I would need to receive the papers in order to get that name, but she said that if I received the papers tomorrow I (meaning my husband) would have no other option but to pursue the matter in court and I would be responsible for court costs... or I could choose 1 of 2 options to close the matter today: make 4 payments totaling a specific amount over $800 or a one time payment of $621.88 to close the matter. I said I would call her back before the end of the day and I called my husband. He knew it was a scam instantly. I should have known. Why would anybody accept less than half of what you owe them to close a matter? But the information they had on him (employer's name, banking institution, address) made it all seem real.

As expected, no such legal papers arrived the following day. Or any day after that. I blocked the numbers on my cell phone.

Today - a week later - I received a call on my cell phone from 855-748-3143 asking for my husband again. I knew it had to be them again and said that they had the wrong number. The woman laughed and said, "Good luck in court." I called back and to my surprise got the same woman - which seems odd for a national company. Laura told me the name of the company was named NATIONAL MEDIATIONS - which I googled and got to this webpage.

I of course have blocked this new number. I guess from now on I won't answer toll free numbers on my phone. But it is really annoying.

Received a call from mediation office of Kevin Turner, phone number 888-445-9078. Stated that if I did not respond by a certain date, they will issue a summons. I called the number back, and asked for a written validation letter and was told "how did I know one was not already sent?" I told them I hadn't received anything and the lady said that wasn't her fault. Asked for my personal info and when I refused, she hung up.

i received an email from fdiclegaldepartment1988 stating that there was a legal matter and it dated back to 2014. I don't owe anything and have not received anything in thr mail or a voicemail. Very scary

this is the email i received

he full email address it is from is fdiclegaldepartment1988@

I received the SAME email today. Same docket # same amount, same date. It is identical with the exception of the sender email. That makes me feel a little better, as I can now consider it a total scam. I never had a payday loan from this company and certainly not from the date they are stating. Have you gotten any answers on this? Thank you for posting this. Anything with "legal", "garnish", "court" listed tends to make me a little freaked lol.

I received the same exact email today with the same exact wording. I feel somewhat relief because some others have received this same exact email.

Received a call a few weeks ago. The phone showed a local number when I didn't answer, and then she called on my cell. Long story short trying to collect on a debt from "6 years ago" from a family member, not me. Sounded rather convincing until I realized that it was a form of extortion which I relayed to her. I told her I was going to report her to the State Attorney General. And it didn't seem to phase the caller.

I received a message from someone stating my name and that my social security number was placed on their list and that I needed to be available on July 7th for a signature of some papers. She said that a claim was being filed and that I should call 866-691-9739 if I had questions and gave a claim number. I called the number back and gave them the claim number. They said that I needed to verify my information. I said no and that I needed to know what this matter was regarding and they said that they would have to terminate the call if I couldn't verify information. I hung up.

Received the same call today. Anyone serving papers is not going to call you first. It's another scare tactic. If they will not give you information do not respond.

Got this email today from: legal cash collector
Subject line: police

We tried to contact you several times in regards to your payment date but we did not receive any response from your side.

This is the final notification from our side to let you know that if we do not receive the payment or any response from your side within 24 hours then the case will be downloaded against you.

Note: Once the case gets downloaded then your employer will be notified, the major credit bureaus will be informed regarding this fraud and also we will freeze your bank account.

Do revert ASAP to avoid the legal consequences.

Best Regards

I received a letter from Civil Litigation Services that they filed a civil suit against me and that I need to pay 1632.35 by the 19th. They have a phone number and website. Should I contact them?

If you get paperwork from a real lawyer or a court it's important to read it. Look at the instructions and dates on the papers. If there is a phone number for a Clerk or courthouse, call and ask for more information.

If you aren't sure what the letter really says, ask someone to look at it with you. Do you have a friend or neighbor or someone at work who can help you figure this out? Sometimes scammers make up a business name so they can scare people into paying money.

So I got a call around 1:30 from people claiming to be from Walker&sons saying I owed a debt from a book club and that they try to resolve the debt for less. My first red flag was that their phone number started with 844 and any respectable law firm isn't going to have an 844 number. The second red flag was them saying they would garnish my husbands wages and our car would be repossessed as a partial payment which didn't make since seeing as my car is worth much more than $500. My biggest red flag though was that they said it was a civil suit that had already him through court and there was no way to dispute it. I knew for sure then that they were scam artists. If someone calls you from 4109298965 and tells you that you have to call 8448879244 within 2 hours or you will be served, DO NOT DO IT! Even the name of the company was fraudulent as all I could find even close to it was John Walker& Sons brewing company.

I received a VM from a Man stating he was Andrew Prescott and I was needing to return his call regarding a legal complaint against me or he will contact the authorities for two different counties. I called back and someone answered like i was calling a residence "Hello" oh then they stated they are recovery support. I asked them who is their vendor and they kept hanging up on me , one told me she would see me in court. So the gentleman called my sister stated he was going to serve me at work regarding the complaint and i needed to address this or he will find me! I called them back a lady stated there was a loan from 2011 and they are the middle man for some cash service , I told her I never took out a loan she decided to argue with me. They had all my wrong information address, work, everything. I asked how come I have never heard of this since 2011 i have not received any communication regarding this she stated they made several attempts. I told her to send me something in writing exactly who its for when or where before anything she said they will see me in court.

I received a call this afternoon from a Process Mediation Service (904-479-1333). They left a message on my voice mail threatening legal action and the sending of documents to the court house. In researching the number, I found severl site indicating that this was a payday loan scam. In calling the number back- noone answered. However I beleive that they will call back again most likely from a different number. Having been a victim of scams like this years ago, I have become very cautious. Also received emails from other companies just a few days prior to the calls claiming payday loan collection for other companies that I have never heard of before. Needless to say that noone will be getting a dime from me

The email you got did not end in ".gov" An email from a real federal government employee will end in ".gov". I deleted the last part of the email you sent in your comment before I posted it.

I got a voicemail from a Anthony Gaines who claims he is from County Legal Services and that I failed to appear in court and I needed to call a Barbara Wilson Attorney at Law at 82554772770...Well, that is 1 digit to many for Texas or any US State. I called my court and asked them and they said "No, Nothing under your name"...Which I knew that because even though I am 32, I have a perfect record (*Knock On Wood*). I have always had prepaid credit cards and I've never been late on any bills. So I truly do not know why these people are bugging me. Has anyone else had a call from an Anthony Gaines? He also said he tried to deliver documents to me telling me to appear in court again but he failed to do so. 1. I moved recently, so, I believed it at first...Please Be Aware of Anthony Gaines.

I received a phone call from the same individual. First red flag was that it was from unknown number and my phone said no caller ID. So I didn’t answer. Voicemail was left stating caller’s name as Anthony Gaines from County Legal Services and that they had sent me a legal court documentation for court appearance but that it had been returned to them. Stated I needed to contact a Barbara Wilson Attorney at 877-813-8094 or further legal action would be taken. Left a case of number. Second red flag was that he asked for me by my maiden name. I have been married for 12 years. Next red flag came on how this so called Anthony Gaines left the voicemail. He seemed to be rushing through his statements and was barely audible when he actually left the so called call back number and case number was even more slurred.

I got a call today from the same outfit, Anthony Gaines stating to call Barbara Wilson. Gaines called 3 times in a row from an unknown number, I answered on the third and stated to leave a voicemail. He also said he tried to mail documents but they were returned. I called the number he left and it was somebody with last name Cruz. He said all attorneys had gone home for the day and asked for my case number. He asked for SSN and I declined his request.

I am receiving calls from a 972-715-3237. I have not spoken to the person because I don't recognize the number. The problem is that they are contacting people I have not associated with in over 15 years. Today alone they contacted 5 people that have sent me messages telling me that the person calling said I was going to be arrested at my job for a debt that I owe. I don't know what the debt is. All they give is a name which i'm sure is fake. This cannot be legal can it? The people they are contacting are people I have NEVER EVER used as a reference in any situation. What can I do to stop this??? Not only is it stressful, but it is an embarrassing situation.

Received a call from my ex husband in another state. He said that he was contacted by a debt collector that was going to take me to court??? They were very intimidating. I have not lived in his state. I don't know what they are talking about and I didn't think that "collection agencies" could talk to 3rd parties and disclose any alledged information??? Am I wrong?

If you don’t have an attorney, a collector may contact other people – but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney. Read more about debt collection and your rights.

Yes, it is a company and that's it. they have been calling my phone number for over a year. Receiving computerized calls Greater than 40 times and not one live call ( human person for those how want to respond from the company). Each message states if I do dot respond with a day they will stop trying to contact my number. What a joke. The calls never stopped. For me and my phone number, they were calling the wrong person and number. So I called them, and stated that the person they where trying to contact at my number was the wrong person. That person thanked me and the call ended. From there I received harassing calls concerning my phone number and who I was. They did not want to accept that I was not going to give them that info. Hopefully the calls ended after I started calling them again and again and so on. THEY ARE A COLLETION ACENSEY PLAIN AND SIMPLE. FROM WEINBERG MEIDIATION GROUP, THEY STARTED CALLING WITH A REAL PERSONL NOT A COMPUTER. WANTING ME ASSIST THEM WITH THE PERSON THEY WERE TRYING TO CONTACT. THEY WOULD NOT ACCEPT THAT I DID NOT WANT TO HELP THEM. FOR ME THEY WERE REPOSINTING THEMSELF AS A LAW FIRM.

Caller: Weinberg Mediation Group

Received a phone call today from these people stating that they had received a claim from the county I lived in, and they were on the phone with them - but staying silent and messaging them to "negotiate". They stated that I owed on a card that has been closed out and paid of for years. He was first stating that I had defrauded the bank - which lead to the claim from Johnson county. When I asked for his company's name - he was very reluctant to give it to me and was arguing with me about it. I signed up for life lock right after this call.

I received a call from a "John Edgar" today ( but an unknown number on my caller I'd) telling me to " be available" on Thursday to serve me papers. He also said I could call this 833 number for info and I called and it's some place called green arrow associates or great arrow associates. Anyone else get a similar call ?

I received a call from Dominique Law Office last month saying a warrant was being issued for my arrest because of a fraudulent check I had written in 2013. I usually know when they are scams, but this one was pretty convincing. There were some red flags that were raised, but when I looked up this law office online, I could t find where anyone else had been contacted. So stupidly I paid them and now “shockingly” they haven’t sent me the file. Anything I can do?

You can report this to the FTC at The information you give will go into a secure database that the FTC and other law enforcement agencies use for investigations.

If you used a personal check to pay, you may want to monitor your checking account, to be sure the company doesn't take more money from your account.
