Another tax scam: IRS imposters

tax identity theft logoTax identity theft is the theme of the week, but it’s not the only tax scam we’re talking about. Complaints to the FTC about IRS imposter scams have shot up over the last year — by almost 50,000 complaints.

Here’s what happens: You get a call from a scammer pretending to be with the IRS, saying you’ll be arrested if you don’t pay taxes you owe right now. You’re told to wire it or put it on a prepaid debit card. They might threaten to deport you or say you’ll lose your driver’s license. Some even know your Social Security number, and they fake caller ID so you think it really is the IRS calling.

But it’s all a lie. If you send the money, it’s gone.

When you have a tax problem, the IRS will first contact you by mail. The IRS won’t ask you to wire money, pay with a prepaid debit card, or share your credit card information over the phone.

If you get a call like this, file a complaint with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at tigta.gov. You also can file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. If you’re concerned there’s a real problem, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

Received 2 calls threatening a lawsuit today from 502-257 -2250 . Scam for sure .

Received a call on 5/11/2016 using a spoofed Los Angeles area code from "Steve Martin" with the usual 'we'll arrest you' scare. Called back from my office phone and asked the South Asian accented woman for details from my file. She said it was my 2013 Form 1040. I asked what name they had in my so-called file and she gave me my company's name (from caller ID, obviously). Asked for my address and she gave me the city & state of my office (also from caller ID), but said the street address was not available from the 'file'. At this point I asked her rude questions and she pretended not to hear me. After three rude questions, the call was disconnected.

I KNOW I OWE NOTHING TO GOOD UNCLE SAM, AND YET, THE MESSAGE ON MY ANSWERING MACHINE LEFT A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH, AN INVASION OF PRIVACY, TO KNOW THEY KNOW OF ME....I DON'T WANT THESE LOW-LIVES TO COME NEAR ME, NOT EVEN OVER THE PHONE. IS THERE ANYTHING AMERICA AS COUNTRY CAN DO TO STOP THIS SCAM? DOES IT HELP TO REPORT IT TO THE IRS?

If you get a call from a scammer pretending to be with the IRS, saying you’ll be arrested if you don’t pay taxes you owe right now, you can report it to the FTC and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).

Received a call IRS was filing a lawsuit call this number 202-747-5369. So I called. They wanted my name and social security number. May 13th 2016

Same Here phone number used was 814 386 8127.
impersonating an IRS officer claiming that the call was being recorded by IRS office in Washington DC and the Attorney General office. Accusing of fraud, wilfull misrepresentation, violation of Tax code etc... accused me of under reporting tax from 2009- 2014. Threaten to seize my house, car, bank account etc....
Interlocutor was a male of Pakistan/Indian/Bangladesh descent. What surprises me is that the US enforcement authorities have not managed to catch them yet! considering the low sophistication of the scheme.
Anyway beware and don't give them any info and that you will go in person to your local IRS office to sort it out. Don't waste your time on the phone.

They also have these numbers also 239-307-5124, 202-800-9900 , 213-426-1745 and
213-576-3009

got a call from 206 5395704 asking to call back saying that i owed homeland sucertie will take a way my passport and be that i will be throw in jail

I'm stuck in bed w/temporary paralysis due to brain & back injuries. I've gotten several of these threats & had nothing better to do so I called & confronted each caller from numerous #'s & called their bluff. Told them they are cyber terrorists & calmly called them every name I could think of. Had 5 of them cry & say work is much hard to find but looking for legal employment. They have my full maiden & married name, address, ss#, & even dl#!?!? 3 of them initiated text mssg'ing!! Apologizing & saying they are not terrorists & please know it's only business! I reported all to all mentioned governing agencies & today received a call telling me how intelligent & knowledgeable I am & have excellent grammar as a professional. He said he & I will work together & make much, much, great ammnt of $! When I laughed at him & told him he was psychotic he said work w/me or lose life. I told him to crawl back under whatever rock he crawled out from under & as I began to hang up he & a female voice were screaming at the top of their lungs in who knows what language. I hung up & haven't heard a word back!& usually they call & call & call back when I've given them a taste of their own medicine as well as a piece of what's on my mind for their amoral existence!
Some of them do know what they're doing is wrong....I guess there's hope left after all.

2 calls 3 hours apart. automated and from 206-823-3171

I just received a call from 206-400-6853 someone named "Jack Gates" claiming to be from the IRS saying that I owe them over $5000 and that I needed to pay them or I would be arrested within 20 minutes. I advised the person I would contact my attorney and call back. I then went online and saw this. They had a lot of my personal info, such as a prev address and last 4 of social. Glad I checked online 1st before giving them any information.

I received a call from 360-208-0828. Same thing that everyone else is experiencing. I will not return or acknowledge the call. If it is the IRS, they will come visit me or send me something in the mail.

Here's the phone number of the one I got, it was listed as a private # on my caller id. But the robo message was 206-866-0887. I called him back a had some choice words for him then hung up.

Same here I just got the same IRS robo scam call few minutes ago threatening to sue. Very skeptical got the number 206-823-3376, hopped online and found this thread. Thank you all for confirming. Don't fall for it. As remember I believe IRS only contacts you via official postal mail, NOT threatening phone calls.

My wife got a call today (202) 864-0154, saying she was being sued for $11,000 by the irs. The Indian man said if she hung up there would be a warrant out for her arrest and could go to jail for up to 5 years. Then he said just pay what she could and he'll help her out. So she paid him $5,000. Just kidding. She asked for the address he was calling from and he gave her 1111 constitution ave. Washington dc. Already knowing it was a scam, I had to be sure. As she was talking to him I went and found this site. Thank you to everyone that has posted. I hope this helps the next person.

This guy Jason O'Conner from the 254 number listed above. Oh joy it's JUNE OF 2016, IS ANYTHING EVER GOING TO BE DONE ABOUT THESE SPAMMING SCAMMERS?? OF COURSE NOT IT WOULDNT BE OUR LAZY GOVERNMENT MOVING FASTER THAN MOLASSIS IN WINTER RIGHT? BUT YOU BETTER BELIEVE YOU AS AN AMERICAN, WOULD LOSE EVERYTHING OF IT WAS YOU DOING ANYTHING... RESICULOUS THIS CRAP CONTINUES

I had a robocall this afternoon telling me that there is a criminal case against me. they gave a case number and said I or my attorney of record must call back right away "or all they can do is wish me luck in the legal proceedings." Couldn't get the whole number, but it was 71X-769-6831. I was terrified, because my taxes were confusing this year.

Got my lawsuit call from 559 210 1324 ... Researched on Internet since IRS doesn;t contact you by phone as final warning without any prior contact via mail. Ignore calls.

I live in Georgia and just received a call from phone number 646 930 8909 (which also states unavailable on my caller ID). She stated the Federal Govt. has a Law Suit filed against me for taxes. Then she quoted a 646 (did not write down the rest of it)call back number and I was to call it immediately. Nothing else was said before I cut the call off.

Recieved a robot call from a 904-236-4141 number saying that the IRS was filing a lawsuit no I pay my taxes call the number back got no answer it's a scam be careful

I've gotten several calls in such a fashion. They typically leave a voicemail saying i'm being sued by the irs and to call them back. I delete the voicemail and block the number. This is just hilarious to think that people would fall for such a simple scam but apparently they do.

I received a call today on my mobile phone that came up as No Caller ID. No other information came with the call. I answered and a pleasant feminine voice told me that the IRS was filing suit against me .... and, that I needed to call a certain number. I listened to the message and could not remember the number. It was a very strange call and had no access to a "live" person: only the recorded message.

Yes I just received a call from 503-739-2409 .. it was a scam please be careful friends

June 14, 2016 - Received a call from 206-823-3230, the Indian (from India) sounding guy stating I was being investiaged for tax fraud. I asked if he was a IRS agent or representative? He hung up. I went to the internet and found out its a scam.

I just received an automated call saying this was my final notice to contact the IRS,that they would be filing a lawsuit very soon,to call this number 402-601-6012,i hung up and got on a FTC website to see that this is obviously a scam, wow that message threw me for one i pay my taxes..

IRS Scam at phone number: +1 (321) 541-1423 Melbourne, FL

Received a call from 202-864-0161. Did not answer. They left a voice message claiming to be from the IRS and demanding that I call their office right away. I realize that it does no good to report these criminals because no one in the government cares to do the work to track them down and prosecute them. But I hope others will at least see the number and not answer it or block it.

Received two automated computer messages in one week telling me I was being charged by the US Treasury for fraud (or something like that) and that I will be arrested if I don't call this officer (who gave a badge number) at 415-619-5516 or 209-813-5146. Was relieved to find the information on this website and on the IRS website. This must be a huge operation. You can file an official report on the IRS website.

I received a call today on my answering machine, it was a recorded message. It did NOT give a name as to whom they were trying to reach, but the mans voice said he was calling from the offices of Daniel Weisman at the Internal Revenue Service. (I thought that odd, that he would use a name sounding like it was an attorney's office, then say it was from the IRS.)
He stated he was calling about a lawsuit filed against me and that I was to return the call as soon as I receive it. (Of course I didn't).
The ending of the call was the big tip off for me that it was a scam, the recording said If I did not return the call and he did not hear from me or my attorney, all he could do is wish me the best of luck.. LOL the irs don't wish you luck, this is the same tactic that all scammers seem to use.

Today I became a victim of this scam. I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I am now short 1,500. I should have looked online. I am such a damn fool!

Please report what happened to the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint. The information you give goes into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

My 79-year-old mother got a phone call today where a man identified himself as a representative of the IRS and said that due to her non-payment of taxes, a warrant has been issued for her arrest and she'd be arrested within 24-hours. The called ID read: Michael Jones, (202) 239-5408.

I was at her house and she yelled for me and was ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED. Thankfully, she knew not to give out information or payment over the phone but again, having NEVER been in trouble with the law in her LIFE, she didn't know exactly what can or can't be done! I figured it out quickly and reported it to both the IRS and the FTC but HOW TERRIBLE!!!! Again, my mom was in tears and SO upset! I think about so many older people who do NOT have people to advocate for them and who would, in the face of being terrorized, turn over credit card/banking information. WHAT SCUM BAGS!

Received two (2) scam robo calls from #'s below: 206-823-3228 (from female) 906-430-7379 (from male) telling me IRS was filing a lawsuit against me. Sure is hard to report this!

Just received an automated voicemail from a 206 number, stating that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me and to call them back. Uh, nope.

Received call on 6-27-2016. Robocall on my personal cell line stated they were calling in regard to a lawsuit and to return call to 202-754-8448. (That number is a NON-WORKING NUMBER.) They said the matter was time-senstive and that my social security number would be 'frozen' if I did not respond immediately.

I got a phone call about 2 hours ago saying the Irs had a warrent for my arrest for fraud they said i had just beed audited and owe $5000.00 in back taxes they were goimg to freeze my bank accounts stop all income and through me in jail for 5 years the gut gave me his name and badge number and dept he workrd in which was the crimnal investagation dept phone was 13475314279

On 6/29/16 got the call from 516.817.4362, a wireless caller. On 6/30/16 same call from wireless 267.586.1999--but a 5:50 AM. Got a case number on the first call, none on the second call.

I got a recorded call left on my answering machine that said it was urgent that I call 202-836-9756 as they had found "fraud on my tax file." Is this part of a scam? I have NOT called back. I tried to call the IRS but was told the wait was too long, to hang up and call another day.

When you have a tax problem, the IRS will first contact you by mail -- not by phone. If you’re concerned there’s a real problem, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

IT JUST HAPPENED TO ME.. HE TEXTED FIRST THEN SAID I SENT AN EMAIL TOO AND YOU DIDN'T RECEIVE THE EMAIL BUT YOU GOT THE TEXT? SAID I OWED THE IRS 7900.00? HE THEN TOLD ME TO BE QUIET SO HE COULD TELL ME WHAT I DID.. HE HAD A VERY HEAVY ACCENT...

Robo call to my mother. Number: (from call list on phone) 740 418 6236 Message: Irs going to sue for money (condensed version) and call (same number). Caller id said from "wireless" phone…research said phone number is "The number is currently on switch number ATHNOHCNCM1 (switch is a technical specification for phone hobbyists)" whatever that means. going to report asap

Got a call from these bogus agents,I played along for a minute then I drop the bomb on them, told the guy with a heavy Indian accent that our conversation is being recorded and tap by a Federal agent, he started cursing me out and hang up, I was having a blast!

got same call today from 573 604 2021. Asked what state they were calling me from and they hung up on me.

989 808 5038. Same thing last chance before im sued by the irs

I got a robot call that woke me up, and by the time my sleep addled brain comprehended the words 'treasury' 'federal offence' and 'last warning' and realized that a number was being said, i scrambled for a pen and paper, but i missed most of the number, so i was freaking out. the part of the number i got though, matched one of the ones listed here, and when i read that the IRS wouldn't contact you that way, it really helped my stress and anxiety levels. if they call back, i'll be sure to get the number and report it. thank you all, your stories really helped me!

Today we got one of these bogus calls on our home voice recorder from206-823-3736. Heavy Indian accent claiming we owed money to the IRS, and we had to appear in front of the magistrate or go to jail. My husband called the number back and gave the foreigner a piece of his mind....the guy went off script, poor English... stupid really couldn't even pronounce words correctly. Beware...the scammers continue! I reported the call to the FTC.

Just got a ROB call saying the IRS was suing me. I knew that it was fake, because i have herd of others getting this call. The number they left on my machine is 202-640-1877
