Another tax scam: IRS imposters

tax identity theft logoTax identity theft is the theme of the week, but it’s not the only tax scam we’re talking about. Complaints to the FTC about IRS imposter scams have shot up over the last year — by almost 50,000 complaints.

Here’s what happens: You get a call from a scammer pretending to be with the IRS, saying you’ll be arrested if you don’t pay taxes you owe right now. You’re told to wire it or put it on a prepaid debit card. They might threaten to deport you or say you’ll lose your driver’s license. Some even know your Social Security number, and they fake caller ID so you think it really is the IRS calling.

But it’s all a lie. If you send the money, it’s gone.

When you have a tax problem, the IRS will first contact you by mail. The IRS won’t ask you to wire money, pay with a prepaid debit card, or share your credit card information over the phone.

If you get a call like this, file a complaint with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at tigta.gov. You also can file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. If you’re concerned there’s a real problem, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

Do not trust this number or man that calls! IT IS A SCAMMMMMM!!! He has a very heavy indian, arab, accent! He claims you have been chosen out of a lottery for money from the government. He says he is the senior grant manager from Federal bank of washington DC. He tells you to buy $250 in itune cards, have you send codes in back of cards.. once he sees that he has scamed you already. He then calls back to try and have you send another $500 so you can receive this money through (western union) that you so-called won!!!! He will wipe you dry!! DO NOT TRUST THIS NUMBER OR ANYTHING THAT RELATES TO THIS NUMBER!

202-241-9646 SCAM These people told me the IRS Is suing me and I needed to settle immediately with them. SCAM.... the IRS does NOT call you.. .They will mail you a letter. Beware and be careful.

Dear fellow would-be-scammer-victims!
Received call from 206 429 7129 with the demand to call back asap..or else! Took only a few moments to realize it was a scam. As so many before me have noted, the IRS only does business BY MAIL. Let your friends and relatives aware of this fake call, whose callers should go to PRISON for lengthy years!

When called by these evil scammers, invite them (If they even know your address!) for a cup of coffee to discuss the problem. They will terminate the call immediately, if not sooner!

When they call, if you do return it, (WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT!) LAUGH at anything they say to you, or ask. Don't utter a word!

Got a phone call today from this number 206-569-6818.saying the same thing i will be arrested if i didnt call back.funny because i havent worked so they wont be looking for me.sick of these fake scam calls.

I just received a call from the IRS. They threatened to put me in jail if I did not pay and call them back. Please do not call this number 763-731-8129. They called me before from a different number. They keep on changing their number.

I received a call from 321-361-4708. Nothing listed in any directory for this phone number. The voicemail they left stated "The IRS has filed a lawsuit against you" then the remainder of the voicemail was garbled. Just adding this number one here, seems like the phone number is jumping around with these scams. Ugh, like we don't have enough to worry about!

On Saturday the 24rth of June I received 3 phone messages saying that the IRS was filling a lawsuit against me and to call 1-321-204-4350 immediately. after the 3rd call I called the number back, a lady with a foreign accent answered and said her name was Mary Jones and her badge number was 1r166105 and gave me a case number. it was hard to understand her. but she said that they had sent papers to my address but they were returned. "I never got any papers" and that's why they were calling me. But she also said, you know the IRS doesn't call people, so I said so why are you calling me? so at that moment I hung up the phone. Then an hour later they called again.

I got a call yesterday and today from 256-371-6499 telling me the IRS is filing a law suit against me. Not even in my area code. This message probably gets a lot of unsuspecting people.

I received a call from 206-855-6701 claiming to be the IRS. I spent 20 terrified minutes on the phone with a man with an Indian accent because he told me that I owed $5,000 and there was a warrant out for my arrest! I asked for email and mailing confirmation and he said it was "against policy rules". I told him that I'm 6 months pregnant and could not pay that and can't afford to go to prison for "FRAUD". He demanded $200 on the spot and I said I only have $50 to my name. He said "well ma'am how do you survive off that kind of money? That doesn't make sense". I was offended! That was when I Googled the number and saw SCAM ALERT everywhere! I told him Google says this is a scam call and HE threatened to have the police come arrest me within minutes for my "warrant". I said "if this is real, I need to speak to your manager". He said "I will put you on a brief hold, but the line may disconnect"... and guess what? The line disconnected. 4 weeks later, (today) he calls me again... I said "Please put me on the DO NOT C..." Before I finished the word "call" he hung up on my face. I called back, no answer. I called on my work phone and he picked up and i told him I would report him to the police if he ever called again and hung up on HIM. And in THAT ORDER!

Received a phone call today from 206-620-0915 and vm was a recording about tax fraud and that I would be arrested. To contact Office Steve Parker with the Internal Revenue Service at that same number. 206-620-0915

I can't stand these clowns the first one was the IRS is filing a law suite on me and the one well kinda the same please don't Freek out.

FAKE call from 202-386-6380. Wish they had better ways to shut these creeps down.

Received the call today at 1:55 from 509 295-8473 Do not call back! Its a can recording for starters...lol.

just got a phone call from fake IRS saying reported my name that i was going be pick up and put in jail in 24 hours well done been 24 hours havent seen cop yet pick me up.i trace phone number from some island. i am still getting phone call from them today didnt answer it.

Got a call from 1-206-801-1934. They used Text to Speech (I imagine their foreign accent would give them away). The call said I had serious issues on my last tax return that needed to be resolved immediately. I checked the number and saw all the scams -- and that the number was from Washington State. They called back again, but I didn't answer and they did not leave a message.

Got a phone call from 240-823-3204 claiming the department of treasury is about to charge me with tax fraud and I should address the issue immediately by calling the same number. Beware if you receive a phone call from this number!

I received same threats from them. I knew right away it was a scam when they said I owe property tax but I don't own any property. It pissed me off that they are threatening arrest warrants and how many elderly people they are probably getting money from so for the last few days I have been having a blast harassing them. I have called over 100 times. Lol

gain, this was 9/4/2017

I heard from these people as well. A man called asking me if I was the one he was trying to contact, I said yes. He sounded serious and got to the point. When I heard he was the IRS I went?? Then he claimed I owed $10,000.00 or some asine amount of back taxes,I smelled "Debris"! I worked on Ft. Campbell Army Post for 5 & a half yrs. paid my taxes besides I only made several thousand dollars over that a yr. I told him no I did not owe that. He insisted. He said he'd take my home. I told him go ahead, don't own one,nor do I any other assets. My only income is disability. He said, {get this} "I'm a Detective for the IRS and I can arrest you".NOW I spelled a landfill! I told him what I thought of his tough lines he threw around and how fragrent I thought they were. When he so sure he could arrest me I told him that I was on the National Recovery Do not call list. He said, "I don't care what list you're on".I told him, "Call again, and I'll file a lawsuit on your company". Not another call.

I'm not sure if it was an IRS scam but I got a voicemail from 360-502-7162 and the beginning was cut off so I'm not sure what it was about. They were like "we've tried to contact you a bunch of times we're thinking about lawsuit" and I have this thing where I don't pick up the phone if it's an unknown number, so then if it's legit they'll leave a voicemail— so that was plausible. But I went onto my missed calls list and there wasn't a single call from them. So immediately I'm calling bs on them. But I call back. I state that I'm 14 (I'm actually 16 but there's no way this random person is knowing that without proof that they're legit. Either way, I'm still a minor with no taxes to personally pay, no drivers license, no voting ability ect) and tell them all about how I didn't get any other phone calls from them, and that if I had, I didn't pick up because of caller ID and my mom's orders or whatever. Some indian (? not sure, the call was really spotty) guy then takes the call from the secretary/person who picked up (he was Irish?) and starts asking my name and address which I don't give. I'm just like "I am not giving any personal info out without proof you're legit" he says he's like an officer or something and that he's looking for some chick that I can't remember the name of (it sounded like a foreign name) and gave me her address? It wasn't my name OR address though. I told him this, and then he asked if i voted? And I'm like "I just told you I was a minor? " and he said he'd call me back tomorrow. I don't know what all this is about, and they didn't ask for money but i'm concerned. I know it's probably a scam but I really don't know.

‭+1 (202) 241-1593‬ This number is a scam

Received a voicemail from 225 286-3384 saying legal action will be taken against me for tax fraud and that I should return the call before I get arrested.

Just had a call like this at my work, recorded voice saying we were being investigated for tax evasion (this would be our only notice) and we should call 401-305-2356 which matched our caller id (name showed R Srinivasan) a2 12:08pm on 11/9/17.

Just got this call from 3155386020 saying I was being investigated for tax fraud. He had an India accent. I told him that this is a scam and he hung up on me.

I have received this call twice. A friend also receive the call and was seriously concerned. This is fraud. The time wasted and the anxiety created costs all of us. Arrests and restitution can't balance the harm they are causing.

Just got a "robocall" from the IRS to call them at 206-259-7922 because they are filing a lawsuit against me for tax evasion.

Got a computer generated voice mail saying I`m being sued by the IRS.. 864 492 1675...

Received a missed call from 360-312-7492. When I called back and heard who they were, I laughed and said "Oh - you all are the crooks and scammers" They promptly hung up.

Got a phone call from 408-458-7502 (Los Gatos,CA area) stating he was from the IRS Investigative Unit and that the IRS was going to file a law suit against me. When I asked for more detailed information so I can have my attorney call back, he hung up on me. He knew my name but the funny part is, when I called the number back, he answered the phone and started saying vulgar language to me. BEWARE

(360) 200-5023 and (202) 855-7588. Filed and submitted taxes last night. These idiots move fast. Started getting threats this morning of my impending arrest if I don't call back.

I just received a call with an automated IRS message from 773-279-5968. I'm not returning the call.

As others have said, the IRS won't contact you via phone or email. They also wont arrest you or sue you for owing tax money, they'll send you s bill and sdvise you to call them. (If that ever does happen I recommend you check the phone number. The headquarters is in DC, not Washington State.) Something that is almost funny is these people tell you to pay by gift card at Walmart. TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. The IRS takes checks or money orders. When in doubt look up the number for an IRS office in the yellow pages or online.

they call me today its a scam 202-856-4057 and they said it was irs

Definitely call the FTC, IRS and anyone else you can. Just don't expect anything to happen as these calls are made over the Internet with spoofed caller IDs and the government either can't or won't try to nail thee people.

But the calls are free and registered and complaint websites are free to post on so why not at least let them know what the scammers are up to.

Got a scammed call today, (206) 201-2372
