Another tax scam: IRS imposters

tax identity theft logoTax identity theft is the theme of the week, but it’s not the only tax scam we’re talking about. Complaints to the FTC about IRS imposter scams have shot up over the last year — by almost 50,000 complaints.

Here’s what happens: You get a call from a scammer pretending to be with the IRS, saying you’ll be arrested if you don’t pay taxes you owe right now. You’re told to wire it or put it on a prepaid debit card. They might threaten to deport you or say you’ll lose your driver’s license. Some even know your Social Security number, and they fake caller ID so you think it really is the IRS calling.

But it’s all a lie. If you send the money, it’s gone.

When you have a tax problem, the IRS will first contact you by mail. The IRS won’t ask you to wire money, pay with a prepaid debit card, or share your credit card information over the phone.

If you get a call like this, file a complaint with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at tigta.gov. You also can file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. If you’re concerned there’s a real problem, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

I received 2 calls today from an automated lady telling me This call is officially a final notice from the IRS, Internal Revenue Service. The reason of this call is to inform you that IRS is filing a lawsuit against you.” This is a new scam for me. Typically it's a man's voice. I called the number 202-738-1854, but they couldn't answer the phone right then. I've actually dealt with the IRS before for legit reasons. They always send letters in the mail.

that's the samen number which called me after I blocked the first number. im a tax accountant. they should probably look that up, I knew it was fake. however many of my family and friends wouldn't because its a scary thing to hear. shame on these people

Rcvd a call today from 432 360 4955. Caller had a "India" accent, said they
(IRS) had been trying to contact me. I hung up--this is a scam--don't fall
for it.

6/15/2015 - I just received the same robo-call from 360-566-2212. Same thing... final notice before the lawsuit is filed, last chance to pay, etc. I was asked to call 360-???-4863. I didn't catch the exchange number.

I received the same robo-call as listed above from phone number 360-566-2212. Same thing as the others... final notice, last chance to pay up before lawsuit is filed. I was asked to call 360-???-4863. I didn't catch the exchange number.

My husband recieved a call from a 703 area code. Since he didn't recognize the number, he didn't answer. A woman claiming to be from the IRS left him a message stating that they are trying to contact us due to tax evasion. She said that we must contact them immediately to make arrangements or a sheriff would be sent to our address to arrest us. Phone number was 703-879-3076. The woman had a distinct accent which made it hard to understand her. What a HUGE SCAM! We reported it right away.

I also received the same automated message saying I was being sued by the IRS and to call 360-566-2212. My first thought was to go online and look up all IRS phone scams and sure enough it's just a scam like I thought.

I have gotten three robocalls from three different numbers claiming that I was being sued by the IRS

I just received a call and this is the appearance +62 31 530020000106 so I think it is a foreign number. The automated woman's voice told me that this is the last attempt from the IRS and I am being sued by the IRS. She said to call 253-777-3524.

Had message on machine stating this is the irs and we are filing a law suite against you and to call 2024079070. I got my laptop and searched irs and found this page. I also received email at my work stating john doe from irs has a subpoena for me. I never opened that one. Hope this helps

Just got home from work and had a message saying that the IRS was going to file a lawsuit against us and a phone number to call - knew it had to be a scam but wanted to google it just to be sure

Seems I got a robot call too from 360-566-2212 saying I was, getting sued,by the IRS. They gave a call back number but I didn't have anything to write it,down with. Called the originating call and it would not accept incoming calls Knew this was a scam but wanted to hear what they would say.

Yesterday - June 25, 2015 - at 9:47am Eastern Time I received a scam IRS call from an unlisted number to my mobile phone (Verizon). The caller (middle-aged female voice with an accent that I couldn't place) left the following voice message :

"This message is intended for <Firstname> <Lastname>. My name is ?Sharon? ?Norson? and I'm calling you from the investigation department of the Internal Revenue Service. This call is to inform you that there is a legal case which has been filed under your name. Your social and physical address is under federal investigation, so before we start with the legal actions against you, make sure you give us a call back at our department callback number which is 347-539-4090. I repeat 347-539-4090. Thank you and have a great day."

June 29,2015 Received the same recorded message. I called the number that was left 202-697-9892. The man could barely speak English. He told me to get pen and paper to write the information he had to give me. I told him I couldn't write. He asked what. ...why not. I explained I was disabled. He said oh and hung up. I'm thinking how rude so i called back and the phone just rang.I waited awhile and called again and the man said his name Bob Martin. He said I never filed my taxes for 2008-2013. The guy couldn't speak good English either. After I told him I filed every year joint not single. He then said that's correct. There was an error in your amounts and you owe. You were sent numerous letters and ignored them. You will be issued a warrant. ..I interrupted him and told him I'll be waiting and hung up.

Got two robot calls in the last week, left a message saying I was getting sued by the IRS, that I must call back, and left a 917 exchange call back number. Glad to have found this site. I was sure it was a scam. Do not beleive the real IRS would leave a "were suing you" message like that

Today: Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Time: Approx. 1:20 PM Got call from our scammers...Phone Number they called from:202-684-6380. Scammer: Said his name was Jack Thomas...(AND had a Strong "Foreign"(Asian I believe) Accent?!) ok.....?? Scammer told us we owed approx. $3,000.00 and that we were being sued by the IRS....and that they had tried to contact us numerous times via mail and that they had notices hand delivered to us via the police dept. They then said the money is due immediately today or we would be arrested. Told them I would not Pay them @#%#!!..I would instead call the Police. I did. Filed a report. The police said this is originating from over seas. Hmmm...from what I'm reading here...the number that called me and MANY of the others...is right out of DC. Seems like a Good Place to start tracking them to me? I also tried to call the IRS, for hours...totally futile. SHAME ON THE IRS FOR NOT HAVING PHONES MANNED 24/7 WITH LIVE OPERATORS "AND" in sufficient numbers to Handle ALL Incoming calls from it's citizens, LIVE!, NO EXCUSE FOR THEM NOT TOO. NONE. They take in ALL the MONEY from the Citizens who's backs are supporting this Entire Country and its Gov't., yet cannot even be bothered with talking to us in person?? (Live). TRULY DISGUSTING! Anyway, AFTER Police leave, I call the scammers back at the number noted above. Phone Rang many many times...someone "finally" picked it up...again...in strong "dazed" foreign accent this time....(sounded like someone was coaching him in the background of what to say). I told him I was Glad he picked up..that I would appreciate it if he would give me his physical location...(and more which according to this blogs policy I cannot mention here) AND that I had reported him to the Police. AGAIN..any Enforcement Agency's reading this...How bout u get out there...track these numbers to the perpetrators....and exact a little Justice. Thanks.

You can report this to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. Blog comments aren't part of the database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

Current technology makes it easy for scammers to fake or “spoof” caller ID information, so the number you report may not be real. Without more information, it’s difficult to identify a caller. Even so, the FTC analyzes complaint data to identify illegal callers based on calling patterns.

Got a call today same thing as text rest but I did not know about this. Lucky for me I just got really angry and next thing I know no more person on the other end.

I also received a robocall about an IRS lawsuit. I called there number back 509-288-4633 and asked the person (with a heavy accent) to send something in writing and he hanged up. Luckily I knew for a fact that the IRS mails notifications, so already had a feeling it was a scam.

Got one of those automated calls today. The return phone # was 360-419-6915

We got a call left on our phone stating the IRS has a law suit against us and to call this number 2536171285. It didn't take me long to figure it was a fraud. There's no reason the IRS would have a lawsuit against us. Just wanted to report the phone number that they left us. it didn't take me long to figure it was a fraud. There is no reason the IRS would have and lawsuit against us. Just want to report the phone number that they left for us to call.

Your blog comments don't go into the database that law enforcement uses for investigations. Please go to ftc.gov/complaint and report there, so the information goes into the database.

I got two fake calls... the first was an automated VM. It was cut off at the beginning, but the gist of it was what was reported above. Legal case, I'm in trouble, etc. The number called from was: 867-000-1312.

Not long after, I received a call from 703-957-7969 from a real person. A man with a thick foreign accent, plenty of attitude. His name was Bob something.

When I said the IRS contacts people by mail, he said I had already been contacted by mail from the IRS. And I better take action or else. I said I received no such letter. He became threatening.

I told him the IRS doesn't contact people this way and that I had no reason to believe he was who he said he was. He immediately hung up.

Received 2 phone messages that sounded like robo phone call scam. Same verbiage as I read here (This is your final notice. The IRS is filing a lawsuit against you. To find out more about your case call 202-407-1848). Knew as soon as I heard it that this was fake, as I had gotten nothing in the mail. Everything I submit to IRS is now electronic including my direct deposit back for my refund. I filed a complaint at the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration treasury.gov/tigta to ensure that phone number will be listed in their database as a scam. All you should report your situation and phone numbers used to TIGTA.

I got an automated call here in Houston telling me to call a 202 number. This call has been recurring about every two weeks for the last 3 months. I know I don't owe the IRA anything, I always use the straight form.

Automated voice. Same type of threats Blacklist this number ASAP!
(206 ) 855-67509.

Im glad I found this site. I got an automated phone call from 202-864-1661.

Call from 206 201 2152 received today, telling me to call back immediately because I am being sued by the IRS! I hung up and reconfigured my incoming calls to go to fax. Robo calls can't leave faxes....hopefully they'll stop calling.

here is the latest number they seem to be using 202-738-4323. wife got two calls today at work

Received an IRS scam call from 509-588-7563. Claiming a lawsuit is being filed against me.

Received a robo-call from (360)244-4268, Long Beach California. The recorded message claimed to be the IRS, threatening a lawsuit. I returned the call and spoke to a man with heavy Indian/ME accent claiming to be Kevin Jordan with the IRS. Kevin Smith is a musician in LBC, who can be found on Twitter. (obviously not the caller) I spoke to him twice, but he hung up the phone. I called him a third time and told him that I forgive him for attempting to steal from me and that Jesus loves him. He hung up. I received another call from (954)228-2285, Pompano Beach, but no one said anything. Be on the lookout and report this activity.

If the Pompano Beach number didn't answer, it may just have been someone who called the wrong number. And also everyone has reported the person who called had a heavy accent. He may just be making up or finding names from the IRS for different people.

Have had 2 fake IRS calls - knew they were fake because the IRS doesn't call people. But they are getting smarter - the first call came from Vancouver (of course I checked the area code and I knew the IRS did not have a branch office in Canada), but the 2nd call came from Washington, D.C. area code, so beware, they're getting tricky.

Left 2 threatening messages. I called back, he said his name was David Marshall( thick Iranian accent) very nasty and rude. He called from 718 925 3543 which was from Queens NY and I'm in PA. My husband called him and he hung up on him

all I want to know is what is IRS doing to stop this what are they good for.

the irs puts out alerts periodically to inform the public about scams such as this. if you want someone to stop this, call your state's attorney general and the u.s. a.g. they'll take your info and tell you the same thing.

I received a recorded call from 903-326-9521 saying they are the IRS and this is my final notice that I'm being sued. Obviously this is a scam.

Received call from 320-555-0121, told to call 202-621-0382 (spoofed numbers of the hour I suppose) Ditto on the threatening message. Logged complaints with IRS and FTC. The IRS would never threaten you with arrest in a voicemail ... OMG please don't fall for these scam artists ... Spoofing means hiding the real number they are calling from. They can make it look like the IRS. Listen to their demeanor, the IRS doesn't talk down to you and threaten.

I had read about this scam a few months ago, so when I had a message on my voicemail I decided to have a little fun. I called the number back it was a gentlemen with a strong accent. He gave me his name & badge ID number, asked if I knew about the lawsuit I said this was the first I was hearing of it. I told him that I'd rather see documentation then hear about it. He then said he didn't want to talk to me anymore and that he was sending a sheriff and an IRS representative to my home, I asked when they would be there he said 5 minutes I told him I'd be there, hung up and had a real good laugh.

I have received 2 such calls this afternoon alone! But they're just robo-calls. The caller claims to be an IRS "officer" or "agent" "officially notifying" me of a lawsuit filed against me (but not naming me, in particular) and gives a number (each number was different) for me to call, so I could set up payment to avoid penalties or going to jail.

I'll just wait for them to notify me by mail, if anything like that were to happen. That way, I'll have the information I need upfront, so I could contact a lawyer and have the situation handled legally.

Robo calls prevent you from telling the callers to 'take a hike' because you know they're a scammer, but the calls are very annoying, especially when you have your number listed on several 'do not call' lists, aside from just the federal government's.

Just received an automated voice mail saying the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me and to call 202-559-7930. I am so glad everyone has shared their experiences with this as it is frightening even though you know it just can't be right.

1 person called me from San Francisco. I answered. They said: We will take out 200,000 dollars out of your account as Lola Anserano pressed charges. I said: We don't know anyone with that name. They said: We don't care. We are taking it out. Don't argue or else we will arrest you. I said: Okay then. Then I hung up. I looked it up online. It was a scam. They called AGAIN! I answered and interrupted and said: STOP SCAMMING ME!!!!!! Them: Excuse me? and they hung up.

I got a call from a robot from the number 202-600-8086 saying they were trying to reach me and I faced a lawsuit from the IRS. I have tried to call back and it is busy. I figure the real IRS wouldn't use robots and would write a letter?

OMG! what king of sick people are these! i am dealing with so much going on with my family right now and then i get this call!? at first when i heard it my heart dropped because i couldnt believe that was happening to me, but then i thought about it.i was like uuuh ok? is this real? Why would they send a machine to call me. So i tried calling back to catch these people on a lie.i called 209.682.5870 and it would just beep for a while and hang up. I found that very fishy and i dont owe money to anyone, not even my credit card so as we say "aqui hay gato enserado" and im not letting these people scam me. So now i contacted the IRS directly because i am afraid of getting my identity stolen. These people really need to be stopped.

this is great. rec'd a call from a number in Texas which i found a bit bizarre seeking my bank account number as a down payment to the irs in order to stop a lawsuit. I laughed so hard the lady on the phone paused, then hung up. made my day. thanks to all for making this possible. i'm still laughing. this is going to make for some great dinner conversation. whoever these assclowns are, i wish they'd continue calling me.

202-684-3402 I think the IRS has my real name. They did not and I did not tell them that.

I just received the same call but the phone number was 201-801-1872 in the New Jersey area... the message on my phone said the IRS has a lawsuit against me to call back...

I got the call with a Lady's voice recording saying IRS has filed lawsuit against us. The numbers are 202-600-8086 and another one saying to call back at 509 288 4654.
