Fake checks: The nanny or caregiver scam

Do you offer your professional services as a babysitter, nanny, or other kind of caregiver? You may have used websites that can match you up with potential clients – sites like Care.com or Sittercity.com. These sites can be a convenient and efficient way to drum up business. But scammers may misuse these sites. FTC staff has seen complaints about con artists cheating caregivers with a counterfeit check scheme that asks you to send payment to a third party. Details may vary, but, in general, the scam works like this:

Someone replies to your listing on the site, saying they want to hire you to care for their child, parent, or even a pet. They often say they live out of state and are moving to your area soon. They may ask you – with a very persuasive story that tugs at your heartstrings – to accept delivery of special items or medical equipment their loved one will need while in your care. They send you a check to deposit and ask you to keep some money as payment for your services and then transfer the rest to a third party – supposedly to pay for the goods.

What’s the problem? The check and the third party turn out to be fake. It takes only a day or two for your bank to make the money available to you, but it can take weeks for your bank to determine a check is phony. If you already withdrew that money, you’re on the hook to pay back the bank. If you’ve already transferred the money to the third party, it’s gone – like sending cash. And, since the recipient can pick up the money from a different money transfer location than the one you sent it to, it’s nearly impossible to find the recipient. That’s how these con artists avoid detection.

So how can you protect yourself? If a potential client urges you to transfer money using a service like Western Union or MoneyGram, it’s probably a scam. Don’t send money to someone you don’t know, either in cash or through a money transfer service. Likewise, don’t deposit a check from someone you don’t know and then transfer the money. No matter how convincing the story, it’s a lie. And, as always, don’t respond to any messages that ask for your personal or financial information, regardless of whether the message comes as an email, a phone call, a text, or an ad.

If you or someone you know was tricked into transferring money – for any reason, report it to the money transfer company:

  • MoneyGram: 1-800-666-3947 (1-800-955-7777 for Spanish) or at moneygram.com
  • Western Union: 1-800-448-1492

Then, report it to the FTC. And you may want to notify the site that’s being misused. The scammer is likely trying to prey on other caregivers looking for work.

This could be a scam. A scam will promise a job, or promise you will make a lot of money. But the scam wants your money first.

Do not send money to get a job. If you send money, you will not get it back.

Never send your important documents to someone you don't know. Do not send your passport, green card, birth certificate, drivers license or other documents.

This article tells more about job scams.

I first received an email that I thought was legit but now after getting a similar one a week later, I am questioning it. Here is the one I just received from Sittercity.

Then I started thinking that this sounds too familiar. I reply with: Hi, I apologize but I am going to have to decline. There has been some scams going around and this reply came way too quickly. If this is not a scam, please send me documentation that shows your contract with the health department.

Have a blessed day,

The next email I get is so strange and creepy: Thanks for getting back to me....I really do understand the way you sound and the way you are feeling about this..I will never blame you for what you just said. Yes you are so right alot of things are going on this days on the internet like you said but i want you to know that am not on here to hurt you or make you feel sad. I'm a good believer whom really do have the fearing of God inside of me. I know it's very hard to believe and trust due to everything going on. But am giving you my word about this which i want you too believe in it. You working with me and my family's you won't regret it or blame yourself about it.

At this point, I am creeped out and wondering why he didn't use my name or answer my question on documentation. Again I send a short one liner with send me the documents to proceed. He asks, which documentation do you want me to send you? Drivers license and a document with proof of your contract with the health department. He replies, Alright... i will get that send to you in the morning

I tell him to don't bother, I know it's a scam and to never contact me again. I was pissed! I had looked up his name and email address online and found it used in a different scam. But really he never addressed me by name or bothered to have good spelling. I hope he didn't get too many people. Now, I'm looking into the other family more. Keep you updated

So i just received a check today, but i think that its a scam because so far it's doing everything on this site. what do i do with this check?

Some people who get scam checks give them to their banks. Others destroy the checks.

Has anyone got an email from laura.smith0082 ?

Is it possible the check can be held until bank gets paid, the other party will just have to wait for their money.

Same thing someone said above:   Hi dear, Thanks for getting back to me promptly concerning the babysitting/nanny job,  i must say that i really appreciate your kindness towards caring for little kids it takes a good person with a good heart to do that, The more reason why i need a babysitter is because we are expecting our new baby so my wife will not be able to handle the whole situation of the house herself when i am not around, we will be offering you $300 weekly ($20/hr.) for 15hrs a week.

I lost my husband and a 4 months old baby in December. I have had terrible times in the last few months and this is one of the reasons i have decided to move to your area because staying here brings back some sad memories. Kindly be honest if you have experience with childcare because i want the best care for James. I`m hard of hearing and can only communicate via writing, reading lips or text messaging. I hope that isn`t a problem? I`m easy going and love to laugh. I can send you a picture of me and James in my next email.

It will be nice to read about you. I want a nanny who is willing to be a friend and family. Please note that i have a few applicants for this position but i made you our first choice so i wouldn't appreciate a waste of time. Make sure to include the Following

I was almost scamed by a Kimberly Mary s Williams very pretty. She made me feel special. Until she came at me with how she needed money she waiting on a check which she keeps porseting to send money. First cuz her hotel didn't sever food she could eat an now cuz she can't cash her check in Nigeria cuz it 40,000 dollars. Bad enough there's another Kimberly sellers in Dallas both have the same job as interior decorators both are in Nigeria an both have the same damm line. Not all guys r dogs sum if us r just looking for something more. But we get lies.lol I sud of just been a dog. I think there's a new one named mia or mya but I'm not stupid if it to good to be true don't reply. An another thing I've been reading all these story's an u be amazed how many times Kimberly Mary Marie Williams S etc. Pops up can they cum up with sum bed names??? Thank D.A-K.N

I can't believe it. It was such an opportunity and it turned out to be completely fake. Do not trust "Jennifer Jany"."(732) 328-8675". "Gerrysmith0007 . Thank goodness I didn't do anything yet and looked online. It just sucks. Sorry to anyone who had to deal with such a scam.

Has anyone who received a check or gave their address, name and number been hit with identity theft? I am worried. I work so hard, I thought I had finally found my break through. Wish I would have read here first.

Hello,I am currently go through this right now. And I am worried myself. The person who I have been dealing with is still text/emailing me with questions.

The ones I caught don't but I still get that text every now and then I just tell them to contact me on the care.com website and they leave me alone

I have a pet sitting business and was using care.com website! I received a text from (252) 517-5025 saying her name was Sandra Thompson and that she has a friend Jessica Henleys from Australia coming to my neighborhood that needs a pet sitter 3x per week. We emailed back and forth and I asked a lot of questions about her dog. It felt too good to be true the amount she was offering for such little hours of work so I googled caregiver scams! I wrote her telling her that I only accept payments through PayPal or in old fashion cash. She sent me a tracking # stating the check (for 3x my 1st weeks wage) was being delivered to me and that she'll send me instructions once I confirm I have received it. I wrote her back and texted the # from the texting app that I know this is a scam and that I'm going to report this!

Also, you will be helping us in purchasing groceries for our home complex before or on the day of our arrival. I will be staying in the states for about 2 months and you will be rendering us your services for that duration, if you meet up to our expectation with your services.

We have a financier that is based in the States and will be handling the payment and as well as our other expenses, so he will be the one that will be taking care of your payment, I will instruct him to pay for the first week before our arrival so as to secure your service. If you accept our offer, my financier would need the following information to mail out the first week payment and some of our other expenses payment that you will be taking care on our behalf before our arrival to the state.

All I need from you is total honesty and sincerity. I know you will be committed to the work, You will also have a nice period of time working with me and my husband

i recieved a check from a man named Larry Worthington. Who says he is moving from FL to NY on the 13th (later on the plans changed he is moving the 20th) he told me he would send me a check, from which $350 would be my first advanced pay check to secure my service the rest would be for groceries and supplies for the house. i was not expecting the $2,150. I emailed him a few times and asked him why so the excessive amount, and he completely ignored the question, i asked about proof of employment relating to the names on the checks, he ignored that. I even mentioned it to him, that my doubts and his avoiding the questions were quite suspicious and of course he avoided any comments. Anyways, i am pretty sure this is a scam so DO NOT TRUST Larry Worthington, from FL who supposably works at Cargil, lost his wife from cancer, has two children and is willing to pay you $350 a week for 15 hours. he even texted me from a number 1754 444 2036

These are useful details for a complaint. Please file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. The information you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

Blog comments don't go into the database.

DO NOT RESPOND TO VERONICA MCKAY. She wanted a wheelchair for her son. Said she was from Illinois and moving to my area. They even looked for a Mcdonalds around my area to "plan" to meet. They try to be slick but too dumb.

I will give you her living address once the real estate agent find her a suitable house. Will be awaiting your email soonest and we can proceed as you can understand that the date is approaching Thanks James and Jean Bane

I'm thinking it's too good to be true, and it's have to be a scam. From reading all of those comments I can see it is.

I got the exact same emails, but the name of the man is Ben Murray and he was advertising on Craigslist for a caregiver for his mother. But the wording of the email is word for word the same as yours. It is a scam! I corresponded with him for a few days and today received a check in which I am to keep $400 and then send the rest ($2056) to the moving company that is supposedly bringing his mother's belongings to my city. After seeing these notices, it is very clear that it is a scam. I have filed a report with the FTC and will also go to the post office tomorrow to file a complaint since it came through Priority Mail.

I received an email from a lady named Glenda Locke asking for me to care for her son. She lives in Finland and is supposedly moving where I am located. She said the smae thing about a check except she said she would give me my first weeks pay and asked if I could pick up things for their apartment. I have already sent her my address, phone number, and a bit more personal information. However, i have yet to receive the check. If they offer a cashiers check does that make a difference? Or are the cashiers check common. The job is an absolute dream job that I am hoping is not a scam.

Many people who send comments to the FTC say they've heard stories like you heard. Someone you never met, and who doesn't live near you, promises a great job. She sends a check first, and wants you to deposit it and buy some things or send her money.

If someone you haven't met sends you a check and asks you to deposit it and then send money, don't do it. This FTC article says more about a Fake Checks Scam.

Under federal law, if you take the check to the bank, the bank generally has to make money  available to you within a certain time. But just because the bank says funds are available, doesn’t mean the check is good. It can take weeks to be discover that a check is fake. Until the bank confirms that the funds from the check have been deposited into your account, you're responsible for any funds you withdraw against that check. If the check is fake and you already took money out, you have to repay the bank.

I suggest you ask your bank. I just did a search for "cashier's check scam" and there's quite a bit out there.

I just got this today from sitter.com and I am wondering if it is a scam.

The whole thing seemed so ridiculous so I googled her name and found this web page. I obviously won't be replying. I checked my care. com account, and I don't have my phone number listed, so how on earth did they get it? That's what creeps me out.

If someone has your name and city or state, they can search for publically available information. There are online directories that list a person's name, address, phone number, other members of the household and so on. You can search for your own name to see what's available online.

I must have gotten the dumb scammer they sent me the face of the same email so they told me to call him they gave me the attorney's number the attorneys website I got the check and it Priority Mail I already know its a scam so I didn't fall for anything but figured I would try to get as much information as I could from them so I could turn it over to the proper authorities but they kept turning down me sending the money they said for me to keep my wages out and then they would be getting a hold of me next week sometime no later than the middle of October to let them know what toys to order from Walmart for their son because they didn't want him to move into their new apartment not have any new toys to make the relocation easier for him so just to double check everything because I do know there are some weird people I called the bank where the check was drawn off of and it actually a legitimate check here's the kicker though the person that the check was written off of has been deceased for 10 years the attorney that they had me work off of is an attorney for real estate which would make sense of that was who was handling the estate so I talk to the attorney and all the people that I'm dealing with in the scam are actually real except they're all dead so I turned in all the information to the local police department and it took over my phone for second we're continually texting these people try to get where to send the money Western Union or something possibly send somebody out to check during the middle of this the person actually admitted it was a scam and they were new at it and they are sorry for their sins even the detective was laughing and this is what we got look forward to new scams it might get quite interesting lol I guess that's the problem when they're using 10 year olds to do their business

These are useful details for a complaint. Please report this to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. The information you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

I'm glad I got on here to check if mine was a scam or not. Thanks to everyone who shared their story. My story is very similar to everyone else's. Hope mine helps someone who is also feeling skeptical.

Hi , I got the same message or text or email from this person name sarahrobert947 has anybody receive a email or text from this person ....

This was exactly what happened. Luckily, I picked up on it and refused to cash the check. I also refused to send the check back to them since I can just shred it on my end. Should I be scared for my well-being and the safety of my house since the scammer knows my address?

this is what I just got, scam? Or no?

Hello ..!! There I didn't about this kind of fake ..!! Someone can help me ..!! I deposit already this kind of fake Cheks.. But I didn't do the transfers to money gram..! What should I do now ..!!!! Please help me ..!! I live in New York city

If you got a check from someone you don't know, and they want you to deposit and send them money, it could be a scam.

If you got a fake check, tell someone at your bank. If the check is fake, you won't get any money for it. It might look like you have money in your account now. But when the bank finds out the check is fake, your account won't show the money any more.

If the check is fake, don't take money out to send a wire transfer. You will lose your own money.

Yup. This just happened to me this week. Has anyone else gotten an "offer" from a Gardner or Daniele Mohring? Claiming to have 2 kids with a third on the way needing my services. They mailed me a check for $2150.00 and I was supposed to deduct $350 that was for me then money gram the rest to their "realtor" for payment. So upset right now

Has anyone dealt with Sharon Cowell?

So my girlfriend got an email from some nelly person asking for a caregiver for their dogs and son and fish. they ask fro her name and address but no financial info. I google the email melissaplusanderson and found a thread from aug stating these people think its a scam because they all got the same email or text....but if this person is moving here at the end of the month then why couldn't this be real. I told her don't give out her financial info and ask them to call her so that they could talk and to not send a check that my girlfriend will just get paid when they are in town to see if they say something more that will show its a scam....it sucks cause this was going to be my girlfriends offseason job.

If it is a scam can they do anything with her name and address?

You saw other people's comments about getting the same email, so you're right to be cautious. Scammers may send the same email to many people and see who responds.

If you think you're dealing with a scammer, don't give them more  information, like your phone number.

If someone you don't know sends check, don't deposit it and withdraw money to send them. If the check is fake, you have to repay the bank all the money you withdrew.

Hey, I just had this happen to me. She even sent a check and then I started getting suspicious. I started looking it up. I have this check now and don't know what to do? I called the police last night but they just sent me to a scam hotline. Every time I try to call it, it is busy. I even tried calling care.com. They were busy so I left a message and heard nothing from them for about 2 hours. I just want to get rid of this check and all the evidence with it but it seems like no one wants to help. So please someone help?! What do I do next?

You can ask your local police or bank about what to do with the check. Or contact your state and local consumer protection agencies.

I just received a job offer from someone who said they found me on Care.com, and the details are almost identical. They are moving to the area, want to send me a check for a weeks pay and extra money to secure an apartment. My first clue that something was amiss is the emailer said their name is Kenneth, their husbands name is Mark, and they are six months pregnant. Now I have heard of gay marriages, but did not think men could get pregnant. I supposed Kenneth COULD be a woman's name so I replied and asked to speak in person. No Reply yet. Thanks everybody for sharing your stories, If they contact me again i will tell them to send the check and give it to the police, so maybe they will be caught!!

My daughter almost fell for this scam this week. She was contacted by "Cynthia Jordan" who found her on care.com. Same story...moving to area, 1 child, 3 days a week for 350.00. Would send her a check for her 1st week and to use what was left to purchase artwork for their new home. Received the check for 2700.00. The return address was in Sacramento CA and when I looked it up, it was a TV station. The "check" was drawn off a bank in Monterey Park CA; there is a bank at the address they listed, but not the bank on the check. Just wanted to throw out the new name in case anyone is contacted by them.
