FTC and NY Attorney General team up again to tackle abusive debt collectors

On the heels of their victory against National Check Registry, the FTC and the New York Attorney General teamed up again to announce two complaints against debt collectors that allegedly used a slew of abusive and deceptive tactics to pressure consumers into making payments on questionable debts.

The FTC and NY AG allege that Four Star Resolution, LLC and Vantage Point Services, LLC routinely pressured people into paying questionable debts by making false threats. They allegedly threatened lawsuits, arrest, imprisonment, seizure of property, or garnishment of wages. The agencies say the debt collectors also claimed or implied they were acting on behalf of law enforcement or the courts, and often impersonated attorneys, investigators, or process servers. According to the complaint, the collectors used abusive language, failed to provide consumers with proof of the debt, and told third parties, including consumers’ family members, friends, and employers, about the debts. All of these actions are against the law.

It’s important to understand your rights if you’re ever contacted by a debt collector. And if you believe a collector has violated those rights, the FTC wants to hear about it. Your complaint gives us a lead to follow up on, and may stop it from happening to someone else.

Why can't I access this website in the video?

The website,, is no longer available, but we have a page for Financial Educators who teach about everyday financial issues, and we have at least a dozen articles about dealing with debt in our Money & Credit topic area.

You do this for people in big cities, I guess they have more monies involved. The company Advance Cash Services, ACS/ACE uses the same technics by threatening, sending arrest warrants, having lawyers who leave numbers and when you call back it's a check cashing service, calling my part time work telling them that I'm being investigated for fraud, calling my friends and my husband about check fraud, threatening to Freeze my bank account put my SSN on hold. This happens every to me every month around time for my pension/SS checks to come in. It has screwed up my credit score plus kept me broke. Maybe I shouldn't pay but I am so afraid that they will stop my checks and I will have nothing for bills or living. I have over 500 emails from them and it's not just one person it's two/three people emailing at the same time. But each one has a different total that I owe. I ask over and over: what loan company is this for, how much was original loan, when was this to have transpired? I get no answer, told they didn't have to tell me their address or any information. I have paid $4,649.59 out of my bank account for $3,650.00 before my bank stepped in and stopped automatic w/d. I have since paid this ASC/ACE LLC $3,000.00 they even told me that I have over paid $100.00 and when I ask what are you going to do and SURPRISE they found another loan and they would apply the overpayment to it. Now I was told that if I pay $167.00 it will be my final payment and what do you know, a "lawyer" from ACS emailed final notice on a loan for $1500.00 and I have 24 hrs to contact them to how I'm going to pay it. Luckily all the stores in this area are no longer handling Green Dot Cards or any reload cards except Visa/MasterCard. This is my fifth complaint to you, one to cpfb and now the Ripoff complaint line. I can't understand how after reading all the complaints about this lying company! So I guess if I'm from a big city or from another country you would take notice.

It's against the law for a company to not give you proof of the debt, or to tell other people, including your family members, friends, and employers, about the debts. Debt collectors also can't lie, and say they are lawyers if they aren't. You have the right to sue a collector in a state or federal court within one year from the date the law was violated. Report problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.

I am experiencing the same problem as you Gmom and can't no one help us. I have paid the same type of people 3-times and now they are call a 5th time. Give you no name of company, call my place of employment all day long until I agree to setup payment arrangement - Keep saying this is about a cash advance that I took out and did not pay-I keep telling them I did not but they don't care and its seems like no one else does either. I guess they are using these cell phone numbers that you cannot tract or something but I know I am sick and tired of them. The last number that called this week is 914-440-0950 Anthony Whitehead- Each time they call is will be a different name and phone number but the same voice. They have it made they can harass whomever and whenever they want too and never get caught

Debt collectors make up to one billion contacts with consumers each year. It’s their job to make sure they’re collecting from the right people. But sometimes, they reach the wrong person. Other times, they’re actually part of a fake debt collection scam.

I am a residence in Maryland and I have experienced somebody leave a message that he is from the court and he wants to talk to me immediately if I received the messege or to my lawyer about the court hearing.
