Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I had a guy named George Marshall request to follow me on Instagram. Said that he was from Australia and in the army in the US on a peace keeping mission. He went on to say he was new to Instagram and that his wife was killed in car accident. He’s a single dad. He asked me if I had a google hangout and I said no. After that no more messages and his account disappeared the next day.

Same thing happened to me, he messaged me on FB, request for friend. He claimed he was a Building Agent, in LA California, but from Sabah, Malaysia. Then he sent a pic of himself, with a video of himself working out at the gym. Based on the photo, he is good looking & handsome man. He seems so sincere and loving, with the photos of him, with financial stability. He laid the some sad story about his ex cheating on him. After a months chatting, he told me his dad was died, and need to pay Stamp duty tax, Processing remmitance certificate, Sworn affidavit, Court approval & next of kin affidavit, for claiming of inheritance about RM35K. I got all the undying love crap. Im lost but thanks that I have God with me. I feel like such an idiot. But I am eternally grateful that I'm aware about the scammers. I wish there was some way we could warn others about these schmucks. Thanks again for sharing all the story. When he sent the first message on whataspp I saw he used an NY phone no, not LA. Please beware gurls with this phone no & FB ID. Phone no ;+1 (929) 267-7634‬ Facebook User ID ; @ Umar Adrian

Anyone heard of an Army Soldier who has dual citizenship in German and American. He is based out of Brussels. I have met him on Coffee meets Bagels. I have talked to him almost every day for 1.5 months on the phone. I can't tell from is accent exactly where he is from. He told me that their devices were going to be taken away because of a security breach and he needed me to send him a phone, so we could continue to talk. I needed to send it to Beaumont, Texas for shipment to Brussels. I did like an idiot. He is taking a leave and needs to money to get home (airfare) and he will refund it to me later after the army reimburses for his travel. I told him I don't have access to those kinds’ funds (4,300). Now he wants me to open a checking account because he is selling some property in Germany and so he can get the cash to buy the ticket to return. I feel dumb even typing this. Please tell me someone has the same story.

Has anyone encounter a Hillary Tommy on FB. He is a single/widow from the UK. He has a son and his wife passed away 3 yrs ago along with his parents. He claims that he lost his card and has no means to sent money to his son in the state. He had a job offer in the UK engraving glass pictures and had a personal business buying and selling antiques. He couldn't wait to get back to the State, so we could start a new life with our family and live with him in his house which was to big for him and his son Jeff. He was sweet, loving and caring. He text me every morning and night and always told me he missed and loved me so much. He called me Honey, Hun, Babe, My Queen and his wife. Then after a month of text/messaging and short talks and voice message. Then it's started he wanted me to open an account and wanted me.to buy the stem cards, iTunes, Goggle or E Bay cards. Which unfortunately I did buy a couple but it didn't feel right. After a while he still kept persistent and wanted me to buy more because he needed for his antiques and to get back to the States. He has a home in NY and Chicago. He is about 45yr. old. When I asked if he was scamming he had a excuse. Why would that do that Babe. I love you and miss you so much , you are my wife. I continued to ask questions and told him some one was trying to get into my account he said that was not me. With in seconds he blocked me from messenger and Facebook, disconnected his phone and delete his email. Before he blocked me from messenger. He sent a final message. Apologizing and saying he wish he could take it all back that I meant the world to him and that I will always forever be in his heart and to always take care. I fell for someone who wasnt real. I fell in love with the person in the pictures and the way he talked. A good lesson to be learned. Don't trust anyone.

Im talking a guy who is working in the oil rig in turkey, we chatted going to 2 months and he never ask any money yet instead its a different way.. he ask me to access is bank details so when i did it looks very decent and similar to turkey bank account. I feel its a scam i still chatting him since he did not ask for money. Now he said he have troubled with the machine and ask me to access his bank account and transfer the money to one of his supplier as payment of the new drilling machine.. his bank details looks very real.. what surprise me why he ask me to access his fake bank account and make a fund transfer? He said he cannot access his bank account in the rig because of some restriction they are not allowed. Also when i ask him to talk via video call he also said not allowed its restricted even sending a photo also restricted. But he did sent some photos while he was still in the states before he went to the oil rig in turkey. His name is Joe. He got looks and look like not american more on asian looks..

Joy. Same happened to me but different guy. I tried to access the account and it was now blocked. So then he says he's stuck, maxed out his cards, needs $, etc etc. If you look at the top left corner when you access the site, see if the address of the bank website starts with http:// or https:// All real banks (and other websites, FB, amazon, even this site) use https:// indicating it's a secure connection. If it's http:// and it's a bank, it's fake. Also the website didn't look like any other of the banking sites I've been to, with the options for requests, etc. Joe is probably fake.

I was talking to a guy who says he's a doctor....orthopedic surgeon...on contract with the UN in Jordan. Told me he's originally from Turkey...but has residence in Washington,DC. He has traveled to many countries and speaks several different languages. His parents and sister were killed in an auto accident when he was 26. He was married for 5 years...they have a son who is in boarding school here in the states. He has sent pictures ...he's very handsome. I questioned him whether I was talking to the man in the pictures...he has tried to video chat with me on several occasions but it has always been poorly timed and I have always missed them...and when I try to return...the same. He says he was falling in. Love with me.... Wants to meet...he wanted to come here for Christmas!! He gave me an email for me to write the UN to request his vacation leave.... unitednations- leavesdepartment. intl @ protonmail. com I began to ??? him....why do I have to ask for your leave....and what would I say? Mind you....he has not asked for a penny from me.... He said...I will compose the letter for you....and you can forward it to the email...and he did.... But I didn't...because at the end of the email it said "I am ready to incur any charges that this may cause your office" I wrote him back ...and said...you didn't tell me there would be charges...and I am not prepared to accept them should there be any. I then told him that Christmas is not a good time to come visit that he needs to wait till after the New Year when I'm settled in my new house...because I am staying at my mothers right now. He hasn't spoken for 3 days now.....hmmmm. Dr. Matheus James is his name.

I met this guy on POF, by the name of Charles Pacehelle or Ryan Pacehelle, it might be spelled like this Pasehelle. The guy is nice looking, I knew something wasn't right about him because the pictures looked fake. But that that didn't stop me from hitting the flirt button. He inbox me and the conversation was going good until he told me to download WhatsApp. We carried on the conversation and while we were texting I was going back and forth between him and the site, he had already taken his profile down. Fast forward.....he sent me a screenshot of a text from the military data saying that he needs an iTunes card to replenish his data so that he can communicate with me. I ask him what he showing me this for and he said that he don't have access to his account and you can't purchase the card anywhere but the US. I waited before I actually purchased the card then when I did get it, I sent the info he needed. Well later that day as we were texting he tried to tell me that wherever I got the card from they frauded me. I ask him how was that possible when I asked before I left the store was there anything else I needed to do and the cashier said no. He then went on to say there was nothing in his account and that I needed to go get another one. I told him no I have my receipt and that he needed to stop lying about he don't have the funds. He wasn't expecting me to say I had my receipt. I sent a copy of the receipt but I covered up my card info. Then he came back and ask for a steam card, so I waited before I got that one. In the process of him waiting he then tries to butter me up because he thought he could get more money from me than the $100 I've already given him. This dude had sent me a picture of a ring he so called purchased before he left for West Africa, I ask him who was it for he said me. I told him what made him think I was going to marry him and I haven't even met him. He said that was the whole purpose for asking for $750 for application fee to leave the mission and come home. I told him that he could stay right there and finish it out, I can wait. Long story short, this guy tried every single time to see if he could get more money including video calling me. I ask him for what, for him to tell me we got a bad connection. O wasn't falling for it. We've also exchanged explicit photos and when I finally said enough I told him that I knew what was coming next and that I'm prepared for it and as far as the photos I could care less about it they're just pictures. He got mad started calling me a bi!@#,I ask him why the name calling, I didn't lie to you, you lied to me. He asked me not to text him again. That's a learning lesson for me, not to trust everyone on these websites.

Same thing happened to me, he said it would cost 750 for him to be sent home and claimed his superior officer would send me an email to confirm, for which he did. Then he claimed he had to pay for 400.00 for bullets he misplaced or he could not come home. I am learning a lot of these are scams and coming from military family I started asking questions. I found none of that is true and they are allow to talk to their loves with out purchasing anything. When you stop giving them gift cards or money the name calling comes. If they ask you to go to Hangouts or Whatapps, its a scam.

So when I told him I wasn’t going to get him iPhone he got really upset. So people be careful out their I met him on instagram. I thought he was the one. They are poor people doing what they can to get ahold of a laptop and there is a whole hallway filled with them in shorts and no shirt feeding all kinds of people these pathetic stories. When someone you just met asks you to open an account, that's a sign of a scam. Some scammers use people to help them transfer stolen money. They don't reveal that the money is stolen - they tell a story to hide the purpose for the transaction. They meet people online, create a relationship, and ask their new sweethear to use an existing bank account, or open a new account. Then the scammer asks the victim to receive and transfer money.

If you do this for a scammer, your name is on the bank account and on the money transfer forms. If you get involved with one of these schemes, you could lose money and personal information, and you could get into legal trouble.

Other scammers send fake checks to their new friends. They ask the person to deposit the check, and then quickly transfer funds overseas. It can take days for the bank to find out a check is fake. If you transfer money before the bank has fully cleared the check, you can lose money. If the bank finds out the check was fake after you sent the money, you must repay the bank all the money you sent. The bank might charge you a fee for the bad check, or close your account.

I have a question? After I found this and started believing that I got scammed by Donald Williams Kevin on Instagram. I had to connected my credit c company to cancel the payment that he made and I guess investigation team took care of it, and I got it returened back in my cc, and then I blocked him. Its been a 2 weeks since then and a few days ago he sent me email which I forgot about, I think he is blackmail me saying that I owned him back $$$ after he made a payment and then I blocked him. He said if I dont give him back the $ and I may become liable for payment of all the costs and attorney's fee if he have to involve his lawyer and file a lawsuit to get what I owe him and also be liable for paymet of additional money as a penalty, as well as legal interest. help out here please?
