Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

So I've been talking to someone from MeetMe. Conversation moved to Hangouts. Been talking about a month. He says he loves me etc etc. Good looking says his name is Troy Ivan Marcello. 58 from new york. He says he got contracted to do a three month job and when he gets back he wants us to be together. He has not asked me for any money whatsoever. He calls me periodically from Hangouts and Google calling ... I've experienced my share of scammers before and am leery of course. Claims he is widowed with a 9 year old daughter he is raising ... Claims to have money etc. How do I know if he's a scammer if he hasn't asked for anything .. yet anyway?

omg...A gorgeous man asked to be my friend on Instagram. He introduced himself and said it was nice to meet me. He told me he was working in a war camp in Ukraine as an orthopedic doctor helping with the injured soldiers. He's only got two more months then he's going to retire from the military and return back to the United States. He said his wife died and he has a 15 year old son by the name of Oliver in a boarding school. He had me go to hangout to carry on conversations. He was sending me songs to.listen to through YouTube, flower pictures, he had beautiful words and carried on great conversations. He was telling me he loved me after a couple of weeks. I knew in my head he was a scammer but I just started playing along. I never would say I Love you to him. I told him those are important words to me and I never say unless i truely mean it. I would always say thank you for your special words though. They even had their so called kid email me. He had asked me for my email at the beginning when we first started talking. He even called me through hangout once but didn't speak for just a second because they said the communication was horrible in the war camps. He was going by the name of David Steve on instagram. He had salt n pepper hair. Like ive said, well spoken...Then started asking if i could buy him i tunes card. He said he would like to read Medical books while he's stationed at the war camp. I told him I dont spend money on men. Then he would come back and continue telling me how much he loved me and cant wait for us to be married soon. All of this bull! Anyway I did a search of his photo tonight on google search photo and on some other website and found out the gorgeous guy Ive been talking to is a girl. I was shocked as heck!! I'm glad I didn't fall for this he/she scammer.

This guy contacted me on instagram he was very polite I wasn’t interested in talking to anyone as I don’t even use instagram. He asked me how my husband and family was I thought he knew me. He told me was a widow and had a daughter. He said he was a supervisor in a marina on the Gulf of Mexico. I didn’t give him any information back. I knew there was something going on. He kept messaging me asking why I was ignoring him was I ok etc . This happened all day and night. He seemed very pleasant even tho I gave him nothing back. Then he messaged me saying that he would like to know more about me . I still told him nothing he started telling me about himself that he had a lot of love in him to give and would like someone like me. At this point I told him I wasn’t interested in him . He said ok then he randomly asked me when I was going shopping next and could I get him an iTunes card as his friend that usually gets them was killed in an accident. I told him no . I tried to delete my account at this point as it was scaring me. I did temporarily shut down my account then when I went to check it there was another message waiting which I didn’t open. All the messages I got were good morning sweetie good night look after yourself and he sent messages with pictures of flowers etc. This guy got into my followers via a friend of a friend. He was following me I rejected his friendship or so I thought . I wasn’t interested in talking to anyone. At least I’ve saved someone else from his scams as I am aware of all this . But maybe someone else wouldn’t have been. He went by the name of Wilsonwillan I think. But I’m sure he had other names too. Any one else experienced this man.

I met s guy on pof as well. Says he’s in the military over seas working for a company DynCorp. Is deployment foes not end until December and can’t wait until it’s over, has a 17 year old son that is in military boarding school in Illinois and his wife if 10 years died in a car crash about 3 years ago. That he is ready for a knee beginning. At first I couldn’t believe it. I was scammed years ago in a very low time in my life and that other made scam me for 800.00 dollars. Anyways this man sends me pictures of himself , his son, and home and even him in his uniform. He has never asked me for money but dies says he’s hungry because he normally buys his own food and that he doesn’t like the food at the base. So I asked him how I could help and he said well I would love to buy some food from the mall in Turkey and it will cost 350 but it has to be in money gram or through Walmart, to a total different person not him, says it’s sent to the military personnel and then they will put it in his military account. I haven’t sent him anything I just wanted to see how I can catch him in a lie to tell him off.

I was contacted by Nicolas Diegoo which is the name he prefers Nicolas being his fathers name. I think his last name is really Johnson. He contacted me through facebook using his deceased mothers account. (it was really a brand new account). As soon as he knew I would keep talking to him he moved it off of facebook and facebook closed the account it was unverifiable. He lived in New Jersey and is an engineer that works on oil equipment. He told me how much he loved me and wants us to be together and kept asking me if I loved him. Soon I was telling him how I did love him. He than told me he had an acceptance of a bid he put on a job in the Philippines. That is when things went sour in my mouth. He got to the Philippines and was robbed by the taxi driver. He sent pictures of wound on his leg and stitches. He wanted $3000.00 to pay hospital bill and get a new computer or phone. I told him I did not have that kind of money and I did send some money although I was very suspicious. I did not want to take the chance that he was really hurt. He was stitched up but said he was staying at the hospital till I could send money. He made contact with the company he said he was doing this job for, and they gave him a check for me for way more than I sent him. I am sure the check is fake but I have not seen it yet. He also said he got paid by the company in advance and was going to send me 4 million dollars in a box. He said I might have to pay a little when the box got here for duties and taxes. That little amount is $3630. I questioned him about all this and just blew it off saying I had to pay it or he would lose everything. I told him to go to the company tell them he needed cash for the bogus check they wrote. He said that would be unprofessional and I should ask my friends for help. I know this is not right. Even as I am typing this out I see how stupid it is and recall all the errors he made and I still fell for it. I think he also used the name Dennis Johnson .

I am talking to a man who says his name is Mark Jackson and lives in Houston Texas. He says his wife died of cancer and the picture he sent me of his daughter is beautiful. She’s also in boarding school. I deleted him once after all the nonsense about being so much in love with me and so forth and we haven’t even met. Now he came back on my phone to message me and I told him that I think he is a scammer. No man falls in love with a woman that fast and not even meeting her. I’m conversing with him asking him a thousand questions just for fun. I know he’s not real but like him to sweat a bit. I tried to delete him off fibe as this is where he wanted me to go but couldn’t do I deleted vibe. Now I’m talking to him on Vibe after he text to him on my phone. I’m just playing with him now

This sounds like a familiar story, except he used "Mark Harisson" as his name and claims he's from San Diego, and has a daughter in boarding school. He claims he wants to marry me now and wants to move to Alaska. He first said he was an engineer on an oil rig, then told me he has been dishonest and "that I changed him" and says he's a security officer on "Transocean oil and rig" company. He's asked for amazon cards, Nike, and Walmart cards and wanted me to send money to this "Donna Johnson" who was supposively a doctor who was treating his daughter on a school trip in Africa and he couldn't send money for the doctor bill. Now he says he owes a guy in Dubai for paying his daughter's boarding school, and wants to know how much I can send him. Too good to be true?

Hi there, "taking advantage of" - I think my friend might be being scammed by this same man. I'm really worried about her; she's swallowed his lies hook, line and sinker, and is pushing all her friends and family away. I think the only way that she'll accept that this is a scam is if she sees evidence. Is there any chance you could post a photo of him or send one to me? This would be concrete proof that he's a scam artist. It's the same name and back story, but even this isn't convincing her - she's so desperate for it to be true.

I’ve been scammed by a man who claims he is a site engineer taking up a new project in Nigeria. He is an Italian .He chatted to me and as I know a lot about architecture etc I thought we had a lot in common. He also seemed intelligent with an architectural degree and a masters in Civil engineering. He talked for months and I shared quite a lot of personal stuff. Also he had suffered a very bad accident asca boy where he’d suffered a fractured skull that had left lasting problems. Eventually he wanted to get romantic but I made it clear I was looking for friendship as my marriage has just broken up. After arriving in Nigeria he suffered a robbery and lost his passport and cards plus other items in a bag stolen from his van. Well he asked for a loan. I refused. He asked for money for meds. I offered to get them sent. He got very agitated and I told him sending money was not an option. He chatted on and abruptly disappeared. I was worried at first but the penny dropped.

I’ve definitely been scammed by an instagram account called Gioveni Matteo. I’m really gutted as he seemed so intelligent and interesting. He showed me a picture of a building that he said was in California but I traced it to Australia. His story was a sad one but he said he’d been divorced in horrible circumstances plus had suffered a bad accident . Anyway eventually the pleas for money appeared and I didn’t pay him anything . I can’t trace him although I’ve tried. He’s vanished and isn’t answering . Stupidlynid agreed to meet him in the Uk. He said how hard he worked etc. Medical problems were gone into. I’d provided emotional support but feel awful now.

I’m not sure if my last post posted okay. I am a 35 year old woman living in the UK. I met Ben Parker playing on words with friends. We got chatting and he seemed sweet. He said he was 41 lived in California but was originally from Russia. Well he said his dad was Russian and his mum American. He said his wife had died and both his parents ,and that he had an 8 year old son and a nanny. A couple of weeks later he said he was travelling to Kuwait for work and would be there for a while. He then seemed sad one day and said his son was ill etc. I don’t know why but I had a weird feeling about him from the start. He sent voice notes saying he missed me and a few pictures (I did a reverse image search and nothing came back) he didn’t ask me for anything but I believe it would have gotten to that stage eventually. I outed him today and told him I knew he was a scammer and that his story is typical of scam artists. He seemed to get really annoyed and kept trying to defend himself. I told him I know his secret and that why doesn’t he just admit it. He still continued to say he’d asked me for nothing etc so how dare I accuse him. I’m still 100% sure he’s a scammer. Has anyone else encountered him?

Yes, he sounds similar to JP. One day he told me that a package was shipped to me through Amazon and to be looking for it. When it came I opened it and it was a Boo Teddy Bear wearing a shirt with Jerald Pete’s name and my name on the shirt with a heart in the center. Then JP started to ask for thousands of dollars, instead of hundreds.

I met a ton of people from the pokeriest site. Most wanted to chat on hangout so I finally downloaded it. Wish I didn’t me one guy I fell hard for said he was a pilot. Of within a few days was madly in love with. I warned from the beginning not to ask me for money or cards. He didn’t but did get on the subject of Bitcoin once and then whining that he recently lost a big value in it. Finally he made me believe that he was planning on visiting me me but never gave me specifics like for how long or what airport etc. I then knew it was all a bunch of BS. The next day I removed my account from hangouts. I downloaded an app and was able to find this guy. He is from Amsterdam not the US like he originally told me.

Hello. Currently I am talking to a US Soldier from Chicago who claim his name is Johnny Rodriguez. He wants me to claim a metal box for him supposedly containing his documents and a sum of $3 million cash that they receive as a reward from a secret mission in Syria. For me claim the box the name has to be transferred to me. A security company got in contact with me thru email verifying my name and mailing address and wants me to pay $5,800 to do the name transfer. Johnny is very convincing so thats what I did. I came up with the money and had it wired to a bank account in Turkey. So I thought everything was fine and the security company even emailed me a copy of the transfer certificate. Now I got another email from the security company that the box was held in Spain and customs is now asking for me to pay a whooping $22,800 before they let it go or they will open the box which the reason they held it up is because of probably contravene or money laundering. I don't know what to do.

I'm not sure if I'm being scammed or he was. So here's the story, I met him on an online site and we are emailing back and forth. However this guy doesn't response to me on a daily basis. Just like 1 or 2 email per day, claiming he was busy. He owned a construction company and was doing something for Military. Now, I really am not sure if he was a scammer because he emailed on details and he was the one who actually sent me a money. Now, I have never received it tho. Since he was in Russia now, he said she sent it to a money transfer called UPT-Max, it's uptquickpay.com, and there was a code and stuff like that to track it. I did that and then this UPT thing then sent a payment confirmation that I need to pay $500 before I get the money. It's sketchy for me, so I send the guy an email. And then after an hour or so, I got an email for him asking if I received his email and stuff, (we always kind of not getting each other's email) and then he goes by saying that he tried to look at the UPT thing and put the code and his email address just to check how it works, and then he said that he got a confirmation about a $500 charge, he said that he didn't know and he's going to fix it so he said that I just need to relax. Then the next day, I didn't received anything from him and then the UPT emails me to send the service fee to a direct person in Turkey and yeah they said they are a 'legit' company. I'm a bit confused now who's being real and who' s being scammed. This guy that I'm talking with sometimes is sketchy but then he never asked me to send money nor does he let me fix that charge. He said he'll do it. He was sending that money because he said he want to gift it to me, I never asked for it tho. Now I'm just worried that he was scammed by that UPT thing or maybe he's working with them? I am really confused.

I've been texting with a man by the name of Ryan that will not tell me his last name. He said he's a foot and ankle surgan in dallas tx. At a place called metroplex foot and ankle clinic. But during the time we have been texting he hasn't been inappropriate in texting me at all. Nothing to do with sex or money. But about 3 weeks ago he went to India for his job. Almost 2 weeks ago he asked me about getting him a streaming card. I told him I didn't have the money for it And he got upset. And 2 days ago he went to kenya Africa doing humanatrian work. I don't know what's up with that. Well anyway. He sent me some pictures that were supposed to be of him but I got looking at one of the pictures and he had a new york post newspaper in his hand and I looked up the issue on the internet and it was a contest about something called the titan games. There he was in this paper as one of the contestants. And this man's name I Dr. Bradley Sheaffer. He he is also a doctor for the same thing as Ryan. Al the pictures that Ryan sent to me are on the other man's instgram pictures. Ryan said he is 57 years old but he just had a birhtday so he's 58 now. And the other man is only around 35. And Ryan said he has two kids named cruzetta 22 and toland 17. I got curious about the kids names and I looked up the phone number he has been using and it cam up belonging to a lady by the name of( now get this one) her name is Cruzetta Toland. From Pennsylvania. I got in touch with him quickly and asked him what the hell is going on. He went on to tell me the other man I was seeing was him (Ryan). That the other man had been used his ( Ryan) identity. I have been going along with all this for 4 months now. He keeps telling me he will be coming to see me when his work in the other countries are done. And Ryan will not tell me his last name. And trust me I have been looking up everything he has told me. I have paid for the information and only found a few things about the things he told me. I meet Ryan on Plenty Of Fish. But the other man is very popular. If anyone has had the some of the same dealings with someone that sounds like him could you get back with me and we can compare information and pictures and see if it's the same man. Thanks from ( Concerned )

Yes. He’s contacted me on Instagram. He goes by Austin Campbell as well. Glasses, attractive. He’s on Instagram as Austin Ivan Campbell. Email Georgedan@ . Delete. He’s a charmer very persuasive. Tells you he’s a widow with a 15 year old daughter, Emilia. He will tell you he loves you almost right away. Te Amo is his favorite exit comment. Says Italian but lived in UK whole life. Spoke to him. Very strong Middle Eastern accent.

Anyone ever here of a Micheal Cunningham (although likely using various names), Architect, dark hair with grey mixed in and the same colour facial hair, good shape, muscular claims to have money and travel a lot for work, from Turkey, was in a bad accident years ago and was in a wheelchair for a while and his wife left him... Recently had laptop robbed, and can't leave the county because credit cards are all maxed out and banks won't reimburse such a large sum. Not asking for money yet, just pity etc.. Sound familiar to anyone?

I have been talking to a guy for 6+ months and have formed a relationship. He promises me the stars and the moon and a life of luxery. He goes by Ben Nikolaj Alex. Recently I have called him out on lies and he gets offended and accuses me of being paranoid and that I just need to trust him. Does anyone know anything about a guy named Ben Nikolaj Alex?? I would love to chat and compare pics so we can call him out together.
