Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I got a DM request on Instagram from a man called David Chandler. He told me that his wife died in a car accident and that his son was in a boarding school in Nigeria while he works in Iraq as a UN military doctor. He was very convincing. He started to speak with me in Afrikaans (my native language) and told me he was from Canada. His Afrikaans was more fluent than mine! He told me that he'd help my parents pay for my school fees when he's done in Iraq. I'm 18 and a guy. He told me to give him my Whatsapp number, because he isn't always on Instagram. I did as he told. Immediately he said to give him my mothers contact information so they could talk. I told him it was inappropriate and it would intrude on her privacy. He agreed. So he wanted her Facebook information. I gave him the link, because there my mom has the upper hand in either accepting or declining his friend request. After finding her on Facebook he told me that he likes her. This all happened within one two days! I got red flags when I asked for a picture of the military unit he works in and he promptly answered that it was against UN laws. Then I came here. Does anyone else recognise his name: David Chandler ,in UN military as doctor in Iraq and has a 14 year old son. I don't want to seem rude, so I'll slowly limit contact with him, till I completely block the guy.

February 2020. Met a man on Mingle2. He was supposedly living in Wilson ,N Y. Originally from Norway. He had many pictures in his profile. I learned later that he purchased them on line. He came on strong as most scammers do and was very charming and loving. Part of me knew he was fake but he finally convinced me he was ok when he shorted me his bank account full of money . What I did not know is that it was fake even though it seemed to be real because I needed his user name and password to get into it., it was with royal bank of Scotland and if you go to their web site it is exactly what I saw. Very clever. Anyway I started to actually believe him. Long story short he scammed me out of a sizable amount of money. Broken hearted and confused he sent me an apology email. Telling me he loved me and did not want to loose me. He told me how the scam worked and that he would give me my money back but only half because the rest went to his partners in crime. He was going to use the money to go straight and this was the only time he had done anything like this and he was ashamed and sorry for hurting me. All lies of course. He told me he was in Sweden and was originally from Nigeria. What a surprise. No he has not sent any money back. All I can say is if you are on a dating site for more than five minutes you have been in contact with a scammer. They do not care what age you are or wether you have money. They will say whatever they need to to make you believe they are real and they know how to push whatever buttons to get you to do what they want. Best advice never never never send any for of money, gifts personal info. Learn to use the block button on the web site. And if they have any kind of accent run away as fast as you can.

Watch out for a Keith Simpson. Recently, I started playing Words with friends2. I met a guy who looked nice and average and professed "love at first sight." He will match all your answers with similar lifestyle situations. Divorced, lonesome for long time, no sex for years. His name was nice and normal too. Keith Simpson, 44 years old, claims to have a son(partner) named Brandon. Cute pic of him also. Brandon is in a London boarding school. Keith just flew to Turkey to work on a rig for a 15.6mil contract and his cut is 30%. Oh he wasn't able to take any cash because of the corona virus restrictions. He will offer to pay off credit cards, while you buy store gift cards for Google play, Steam, VanillaOne MC, Sephora and others. He is very demanding in a loving way and you find yourself wanting to keep doing as he asks even though you protest, he will make you feel like you are paranoid and crazy for not wanting his help in getting you out of debt. **Be careful with this one.** I feel bad for the real guy whose picture is being used because he has a warm inviting look about him. I have reported him to FTC. But he's still out there.

I have been contacted by a so called Military man from Afghanistan, talking for about three weeks now. He's claimed he wants to Merry me, says he has a Child nine years old, that needs a Mom because her own Mom passed away from breast cancer. He stated he has no family and is in Afghanistan and needs money to go on Leave. so he can escape a dangerous mission. He has been sending me pictures and a couple videos. I told him I didn't have any money, He refused on many occasions regarding sending his picture I.D. and kept texting me after I told him to leave me alone. He goes by the name Frank Erickson , says he is 42 years old and from California. I have refused to send him money from the beginning and he kept creating scenarios and different reasons he couldn't come up with the money himself. Now he is trying to Blackmail me and is threatening to post someone's nude pictures on the internet and claim they are me. I have never ever sent him pictures of myself at all and he says he will do this if I don't send him money and pay up. He just started threatening me because I have not sent him any money.

Col. in the Army and he's in commanding and training a team, he's always calling them his team. He says he's half German and his son, Kelvin, was in school over in Germany. One minute my red flags pop up but then he'll say something that sounds legit. I don't know what to believe.

And yes, asked for flight money coz his bank has security block. And yes I sent it. Then asked for money for his workers families. I sent half. My bank called last night and gave headsup. Gutted. I have ran into this same kind of scenario, except this guy supposedly lives in Nashville, TN, but was born in Munich, Germany. His mom and dad separated when he was 2 and his mom moved him to the US. He had a younger sister who drowned when they were young kids. His parents are both deceased. He is supposedly an oncologist and currently on contract in Australia until October. He had a birthday and wanted me to send a Vanilla gift card so he could buy some “less fortunate” kids some gifts. I sent $250. Before I sent it, he asked how much I was sending. When I told him, he asked if I could make it $500. I told him “no.” He has now supposedly opened a joint bank account with me at Horbix bank after me sending a copy of my driver license, but I ironically cannot log in. After reading some of these posts, I am now more nervous than I was before because it seems that may be a plot to take over your computer and get personal information. He calls me babe, Queen, his wife, dear, darling, and tells me how much he loves me so much and wants to marry me. He claims he’s coming to see me after he returns to the states. He keeps asking what my dream car is and says he wants to buy me a car. He’s even went as far as saying he’s bringing over 2 more oncologists to Australia so they can help him finish his contract sooner because he’s afraid of getting quarantined there. I am not going to put the name out there that he gave me. It probably isn’t correct anyways, although I did finally get him to send a copy of his passport and driver license and they both show that name. The cell phone number he gave has an answering service you have to go through and tell who you are before getting all the way through. But, it now says the number can’t be completed as dialed. He claims it’s because I am calling from the US to Australia, even though his phone has a US phone number. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone else out there?

Wilson Heinrich, captain, US army in Yemen, 6 months to go to retire and go back to California. No family, mum and dad dead, wife died cancer, son Adam 13, at boarding school. Messaged me through a photography site then asked me to do hangouts. Words of absolute romantic volumes, wisdom, planning... I got bored very quickly. He wasnt impressed with my telling him to do one, and his words of love became angry and vitriolic... oh well, another day at the office

Hello, I have been reading your messages and I think the man that I'm having contact with is a scammer. We met on Tinder and quickly moved to email and then skype. The first email he sent came with some great pictures of a very well build and nice man, I was so impressed he looked so good, I asked how did he had so many good pictures, they looked like pictures done by a photographer, never got an answer on that. He says he is 49 years old and comes from Germany, the only kid, his father died when he was 2 and he grow up with his lonely mother in Berlin and Munich, he goes by the name Louis-Andre Deschamps> he said he is separate and has a son in Madrid. I tried to have a video call but he did not answer and said the connection was poor, but when we spoke on the phone I was disappointed with his voice, it did not match with the picture. But then again I thought he is German and speaks a very broken English... One week after we stablished contact he left to Trinidad and Tobago to work on a oil rig, he says he works for he own company and they contract him to be a project manager of a big project on exchanging the pipes and cables from the rig. Anyway, he's been there now for 10 days and now he sends me a message saying that he needs 10000$ to be able to get paid for part of his contract, because the government is not going to deposit into his account the 30% payment of his contract that is 450.000,00$!! First he said his friend would help him and now he is saying that the friend can only help him with 5000$ and he needs me to help him with the other 5000$ and will pay me back very quickly! As soon as he get the 150k into his account. He says also that he can't get the money from the bank cause he had already taken personal loan to start this project. It all sounded so strange! I live in Sweden and I told him that I can't lent him the money, I said I don't have that money on me. He hasn't contacted me yet. What should I do? Wait for him to contact me again or just clear the skype conversation and block him?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has a similar story. Someone I know met a guy online nearly 7 years ago. Says his name is Jefferson Alan, has 2 kids and wife died of cancer. He is from Detroit, but has a house in Santa Barbara. Jeff says he is a deaf pilot and can only use email. Claims to be in love with this person I know. Currently he is stuck in prison in Nigeria and constantly needs money for food. This person I know has sent this guy tons of money over the years and now uses bitcoin. I’ve seen pictures of him and the kids on Facebook, but the profiles are old and haven’t been used in years. Does anyone have a similar story?

I met anthony (lorenzo?) Smith on OT, he seemed nice at first..... said he was a marine medic in iran, then it was changed to be on base in iraq and invading iran. All he wants to do is text, no pics, no calls, no face time, no email. He says he's from FL but his burner phone comes from Ohio. After being in iran for about a week, he was in love with me. Then he said they rescued some diplomat's son and was paid in jewels (I know, right?), hecwanted my address so some guy from canada could bring them to me. Seriously?? He then left me a garbled voice mail and you could tell it was an indian or African accent. Beware ladies, he can text a good game. This is my 4th scammer, are there any good guys at all???

Hi. I just wanted to tell you about this man I've been talking to. I downloaded the Wheel of fortune app. and had been playing for a couple of weeks when he joined the league that I was in. At first, I didnt want to talk to him but eventually did say Hi. He would text me sweet things every morning thru the wheel of fortune app. Once I started saying hi back, things escalated very quickly. He started telling me all about himself...he said he's an oil engineer and at first he was in Kentucky but then he went to Turkey to work on an oil rig after we actually started talking more. He even sent me pictures of him in uniform on the oil rig and one of him sitting in front of a computer with a weight room behind him from the oil rig. Plus pictures of himself at home with his kids. He kept bugging me to download the WhatsApp but I can't and even though I explained at least a dozen times why , he couldn't understand it. Made me wonder if I was even talking to the same person each time. Then finally we moved to texting with my phone number. He didnt like chatting on the game. Well, we talked for probably 3 weeks and then yesterday he asked if I have a credit card. I said no. Then he talked about his 10 year old son being sick. I often asked him questions about his son and daughter but rarely got answers, he would come on later and say sorry, they were having wifi problems. Anyway, Today he asked for money. $1,500.00 to give to Mrs. Melody for the care and upkeep of his sick son. I would never send anyone money though. My reply was simply.. Haha. He replied, what are you laughing at Dear? I wanted to say, "What? Here you are , an oil engineer in Turkey, making like $110,000 a year and you want money from me?" Lol! But I didn't say it. I just imagine he was sitting wherever he is and laughing at me so I didn't want to give him any further reason. It is because of blogs like this that I've been reading that I knew how to identify a scammer. He said his name is Roberto Franklin. When I searched for his pictures or anything about his name, nothing at all comes up. But I'm sure he has a facebook account with no picture or information on it because I think you need it for alot the online games. I told him I've been on Facebook for 9 years and all he said was , that's nice. Like, I thought he would want to chat with me on theee, see pictures of me but nope. So I really want to Thank you very much for all the advice , it helped me confirm my suspicions about him!

Hi there. I joined Our Time dating service and was wooed for several weeks by a man who wasn't who he said he was. Yesterday, after he asked me "can you assist me love in loaning me 35 grand so that I can get the materials out of Port" I didn't reply and immediately blocked his number. He goes by Charlie Walker but of course he'll shut that down and select something else. I always was a little suspicious and wasn't sure he was real, but I had a hopeful heart and he played on that. Luckily I lost not a cent, but I will have to recuperate from this because I do feel victimized.

I met a guy recently on a dating site. He said the free trail person is over and to text him. Very sweet things he will say to me twice a day. Tells me about being born in America but father is German and lived there until father passed. Mother moved back to NY. He is a aeronautical engineer. Had to get to Chicago to work on a plane, then to Dubai now working on someone's personal jet. Today said he is having trouble with getting parts due to Dubai will not allow access to his bank. Asking me for $2500. Said having problems sending funds to the supplier. Said he sent an invoice to his banker yesterday but they are having problems. Said he will give the money back to me when he gets home. Then something about the money was sent to his account but due to restrictions in Dubai he can't get access to his account. His name is Andy ? and he was raised by an American mom and German father in Emmerich Germany. Has two adult kids and his mom is living in Albany NY with a nanny. Anyone heard of anything similar?

My mom has been chatting with the man who claims to go by Maury Lucas? He said he’s an engineer and that he’s originally from Australia but live in Arkansas, USA. He said he works on ships. He’s always sending her pictures and they constantly talk but he just seems fake to me. He wants her to open an international bank account so that he can send her $40,000 for a retirement fund and then another $75,000 for fun money!? He claims he wants to be with her and as of right now he’s “stuck on a ship” near France and can’t leave because of the Coronavirus. Sounds weird to me. Has anyone else dealt with this? Ps. She’s absolutely not going to open a bank account.

He is asking me if i know Bitcoin. I said No... he would like me to help his son who is 12 yrs old to buy a laptap coz it is broken. I did not do it. What do you think? He is looking good.
