Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I had a similar issue. I met a man on FB. Only thur FB not in person. We talked for maybe 20 minutes before he asked me for my bank account number because he wants to send me money because he says he wants to care for me. He lives in Texas I live in California. I tolld him he does not neec to send me money. He wanted me to be his girlfriend when we didn't even mnow each other. His FB profile showed he was in the US Army. But I iust felt I could not trust him. He kept telling me hos much he loved me and wanted me to love him the same way. I told him it was too soon. His grammer was also not all the good. He would say I"am going patrolling for 4 hours. I'll talk with you later. On the 4th day he told me he felt he was wasting his time with me. I told him sorry if you feel that way. After only 6 days I just blocked him on FB messenger and kik. He made me very uncomfortable.

Wow your moms story sounds identical to mine, the only difference he told me he had no family his wife passed away in a car accident and had a son in boarding school in the UK . And he was an engineer in Dubai LOL.I picked up on what he was up too from the very beginning but I played along with him. He would tell me how much he loved me and hoods God brought us together blah blah blah. just two days ago he tomb me her had received an email from Stanley's teacher telling him he was very sick and needed medical attention and he couldn't leave the ship of course so he needed to borrow money and not to worry he would pay me back as soon as he got off that ship I think he said he had 5 wks left. Ha I asked for the name of the school -no response then he told me he would send me his phone # that never happened,we were chatting on messenger so if he was in Dubai his time would be different then mine of course he didn't know maybe it's in the settings same BS I asked huge much it is that he needed the amount was $1625.00 I simply said I'm sorry I don't work I can't help you out wish I could by the way the name was Ken Ovoke sharp looking man if indeed it was him.I would try to call him on messenger but he couldn't answer the phone was not allowed to ha ha ha we spoke a few more times once again asked if I can help I said no and that was the end of Mr.Ovoke

Was approached by Harry Mathew on Twitter. His profile said he was from NY. We said hello a few times. Said he was a single father and worked in oil industry as an expat, a good paying job. Got curious about his work. Googled his name and "oil" and this website popped out. Asked me if I'd like to work the oil company that contracted him. By now, could tell his broken English. Said his kid lived in Texas and that he was widowed. Also started with the "you pretty". At that point I knew he was a scammer and told him. Persistently denied until he knew I knew. Googled his image and it was from a British public figure's pics (on Twitter). Notified the guy. The guy must have quickly reported it because within hours the profile showed as suspended.

Wow this all sounds too familiar. Talked to a guy from Facebook stating that he a general in the armed forces. Said he is in Syria. Has a daughter in boarding school in New york. Sent me pictures and everything. Told me a story about his late wife getting killed in an accident four years ago. His supposedly daughter emailed says she needs $500 to go on a trip to Africa. Her dad can't get to funds because he is in Syria. Wow Says he was an orphan in the UK because his parents died, said he was raised by a priest.

Contacted by a Andrew Haggard on Facebook, in Army working for UN in Damascus doing communications, widowed 6 years as wife died with "blood cancer"...has 15 yr old daughter Sarah in boarding school in Miami, then NY, originally claimed to be from Anderson SC...ready to retire from Army...claimed to be officer, then SFC...waiting on 3 week vacation to be approved, wants to do Stock Exchange, then property management where I live...claims to have been born in 1960...also then received multiple friend requests from Drew Haggard, Andy Hoggard, Haggard, Andrews Haggard, Anderson Haggart, one with 3 friends listed from the Congo, all with photos of same guy and his supposed daughter living with nanny in NY, has wedding ring on and Haggard on uniform shots...I have blocked all Andrew Haggard profiles on Facebook including the fake, empty ones as well as any profiles having his photo or the daughter photo...still get hit on Messenger from "blocked" persons but with new profile...Only talked a few weeks with him....BEWARE...he was working up to asking for money: "we can't use cash here in Syria because of bribes, don't think that the Army will provide transport back to the States, if I can get a group together to get plane tickets to where you live, but we will have to pay, I will have to pay for my daughter to fly to your place, I don't have any friends, I don't have any family"...all while I am saying that I don't know him and he doesn't know me!!
