At the FTC, one of our goals is to stop scammers and end their schemes. Sometimes, that requires persistence. Take the case announced today by the FTC and the Florida Attorney General against Lifewatch, Inc., a company that sells medical alert systems, mostly to older people.

Last year, the FTC and the Florida AG sued Senior Safe Alert, a telemarketer that made illegal robocalls to pitch so-called “free” medical alert devices to older people. But they also lied about the cost and quality, and that company was quickly shut down. But the medical alert systems came from another company, Lifewatch, which simply recruited new telemarketers. You can probably guess what happened next: they kept up the deceptive campaign, including illegal robocalls. So now the FTC and the Florida AG are suing Lifewatch.

Here’s a trifecta of misrepresentations the FTC says Lifewatch made in its telemarketing campaign:

  1. Your alert system has “already been paid for” by a friend or family member. Not true.
  2. The system is endorsed by major organizations like the American Heart Association or AARP. Nuh-uh.
  3. You won’t be charged anything until you activate the device, and you can cancel the service at any time without further payment. Not so much. Actually, Lifewatch charged people as soon as it got their account information. Then, they refused to let people cancel until the company got back the equipment or a $400 penalty.

There are legitimate companies selling medical alert systems. But they don’t rely on unexpected – and illegal – robocalls. If you get a recorded sales message (and you haven't given your written permission to get calls from the company on the other end), the call is illegal. And it’s probably a scam. Hang up and report your experience to the FTC at or call 1-877-FTC-HELP.

please dont believe that you have won anything! Example I called the Untied States Post office to tract a package and a man came on and said I had won a Walmart gift card of $100.00 but needed to give them $4.95 by debit or credit card before I could get it sent to me. So today it happened again only I reported it ti FTC, I called out they did not call me so how did they do this?

I received a phone call by someone who could barely speak English, said He was US Gov.(202)011-0001. I believe number was spoofed, anyway I hung up on him knew he was a scam. don't know where to report it.

You can report this to the FTC at You can supply as many details as you have about the call.

IRS scam number 360-200-4621

Job well done, hanks.

Got a postcard from MedPro: "We have a medical supply delivery for... To schedule delivery today call - 215 488 7735" Called - some sort of necklace alarm thing. hung up.

I have just received this robocall last week. "Free" etc.

Thank you so much for the alert, your service to the US consumers is most appropriate. Thanks again Nicholas

Great. My sister-in-law and I both got those calls but never acted on them. When she called me I told her not to act on it because it had to be a scam.

You did such a good job can you get the "COMSUMER SVCS, 254-433-4952 asking if you want to reduce the interest rate on you credit card, dial 1 to speak to someone or press 3 to stop the calls. Yea LOL, the calls keep coming but I don't answer them, only that one time.

470-427-0574 - "Carmen from cardholder servicess - " from a non-existant Atlanta area number on 07/093/15 at 1:38PM

This company called me too...I turned them in Mrsmike6

thank you for the info....after being scammed last week, I am far more alert/aware of the damages one can be subjected to if not on your toes.

Glad you got them, they were a pill! Keep it up.

I received the medical alert system and am being charged $29.95 per month for the "service". Should I send it back and dispute the charges on my credit card? I gave the product to another senior family member. He activated it. I am still paying the $29.95. He says it "really likes the system & feels secure should something happen".

Thanks, this info is rsally appreciated - I'll watch our for it. I don't like getting robo calls re insurance for "end-of-life" expenses either, especially as I'm very recently widowed - its upsetting.

God bless

We need help out here curtailing the telephone companies (Verizon comes to mind) doing business with businesses utilizing "robot call" systems

Great job, I'd like to seem all these scammers and crooks in jail.

Thank you for the great service you provide. I get these calls every week. Please don't ever show mercy when prosecuting these bottom feeders

Thanks FTC for getting on these illegals and bringing them to justice. Keep up the good work!

My mother was scammed for 1300.00 dollars. They setup the whole scene a day before. My brother lives 4 hours away and someone called sounding like him. My mother is 84 years of age and can barely walk. They asked her questions like are you alone and she told them yes, which she insists on it. The next day they 1 man 1 woman called and said my brother had been in an accident and that he would not pay for their vehicle and the little girl that was hurt so they had taken my brother kidnapped and were transferring him to another country if she didnt take some money and send to them. they had her purchase a money order and send it right away. She did. they kept calling making her nervous and asking for more money, she than called to say she needed help with more money. It broke my heart to see her in such distress and how frighted she felt with panic attacks afterwards.there is so much more i am starting to feel angry once again.

Been there, done that. I don't answer my phone anymore... I receive daily and sometimes several times a day from unknown, unavailable, or just a number or my caller id will show wireless caller. if it's someone who knows me they will leave a message. sometimes the robo calls, and telemarketers will leave a message, (will be cold day in hell for me to return those calls)

Getting harassing calls from a 844-207-6371 number. Although it comes up on my phone as my area code call. Mr. Smith is his name telling me that I have a complaint filed for check fraud. He is calling my family one state away that I've never given the phone number out for. I'm very frustrated!

Received a postcard from MedPro based in Dallas TX. "We have a medical supply delivery for... I did not reply, but instead searched to see if it was a scam, then saw the reference on this site.
