How to dispute credit report information that can’t be confirmed

Would you know what to do if a debt collector reported a debt to a credit reporting agency and then went out of business, leaving no one to confirm or legally collect the debt?

That’s the problem facing consumers whose debts were owned by Crown Funding Company, a debt collection company the FTC sued for deceptive practices. The FTC’s law enforcement action permanently closed Crown and more than two dozen other companies linked with Crown, but the debts that Crown reported remain on many consumers’ credit reports.

The solution for Crown's consumers is the same as for any consumer who finds information on their credit reports that’s inaccurate or can’t be confirmed: Federal law says that, when consumers dispute information on a credit report, the credit reporting agencies must investigate it. If the credit reporting agency can’t confirm the information with the company that reported the debt — and in the case of Crown, it can’t — it must delete the information from the consumer’s credit report, usually within 30 days of receiving the consumer’s dispute.

Eliminating credit bureaus will eliminate many many issues involving credit issues. I believe credit bureaus to be invasion of my privacy and acts as a control entity as to who or whom is able to participate in achieving the American Dream.

check on a company whose return phone# is (425)403-3645. The message is they are filing a lawsuit with,IRS. The company name they gave is Myarta. I am not sure of the spelling. Hope this will help someone .

IM update double time nothing Chang still same but my credit score dropped down more then I don't?

I used to prepare credit reports electronically to a credit bureau. I recall when we set it up, I asked during their breif training as to whether there was any entity that checked our accuracy, and the credit bureau responded no. I found that so troubling. I also found that I could reaffirm an error anytime, and the bureau checking will take it verbatim. The FCC needs to design stricter rules over a system that affects a huge aspect of peoples lives (job, home ownership, finance, insurance).

The FCC doesn't need to do anything of the sort. Maybe you should look at the header of this web page again, then review what the FCC covers.
FCC: What We Do
The E-OSCAR system of "verification" used by credit bureaus is Compliance Theater at best. The CRAs see their job as the traffic and sale of data. How it affects the people behind the data is not their concern.

Dear FTC:
I just read this email closely and found the name of a collection agency that has been making my life miserable for the past 4 years. They are listed as one of the companies that is fraudulently reporting debt to the credit reporting agencies as fact when that is so far from the truth.

PORTFOLIO is the name of the company, and although I have disputed their claims that I owe money many times, the credit reporting agencies just ignore my disputes, write me back, using a firm.letter no less, and say the debt stands as true. This is the first time since November 2011 when I have felt a glimmer of hope toward finally resolving this issue.

I have asked, begged, other companies to please give me some assistance in resolving this, and they have flipped their noses in my face, and basically just left me hanging, left to my own devices to straighten the problem out. The credit reporting agencies have been nothing but less than helpful, ignoring my plea to get this false report off of my credit file. They have been as much of a headache as anyone else I have fought with to try to get this issue straight.

I believe the 3 major credit reporting agencies are most of the the problem, they just cashed my checks for four years, leaving me high and dry --- and lot poorer, and no where even remotely close to getting the problem solved. I know I was naive' in the beginning, but no longer, and I would love to see these crooks out of business once and for all. After reading a few of the remarks here, I am not the only one who feels this way about Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. They have been much less than a solution since 2011, they have been the major problem.

I need help, and need a person I can turn to that can help me. I am so tired of promises, (always false), that the credit reporting agencies would be of any assistance at all. If you can, please spell out a person's name, phone number, email address, that can take the bull by the horns and help me. I am vert ill and need to get this albatross away from my neck before I can begin to heal from these issues.

Thank you for the help you have given so far, and accept my heartfelt tbank you for putting me on the road to fight this endless battle.

If you have debt with one of the companies the FTC shut down, you can dispute it with the credit reporting companies.

Federal law says that when you dispute information on a credit report, the credit reporting agencies must investigate it. If a credit reporting company can’t confirm the information with the company that reported the debt, the credit reporting company must delete the information from your credit report. It usually has to remove information within 30 days of getting your dispute.

The credit reporting companies can't confirm information with the companies the FTC shut down.

Hello I am writing to you to Dispute something that is still on my Credit Report that should of been off since since 2010

Because at the time I Had Car Ins Progressive and my Ins Covered it But it's still on my Credit Report and holding me back Also they have my wrong DOB. it's from U Save Car And Truck Rental warwick RI

I've Been to court for this oready the Judge Dismissed it Docket #         My File # is       please Contact me if you got this Message 401-xxx-xxxx Zenaida G

The FTC doesn't handle disputes about your credit report. You need to contact the credit reporting agencies. This FTC article about Disputing Errors on Credit Reports (Disputando errores en los informes de crédito) tells you the steps for disputing something on your credit report.

How do you remove information out of credit headers that has been due to Identity Fraud/Theft. Information that isn't in the credit file/report but in the credit headers which are feed to many companies like LexisNexus? I ask because someone used my SSN/DOB with variations of names to live all over the country but I can't legally even with a police report challenge these items off of something they call an Accurint report?! I am told they are under no obligation to remove fraud information due to these sorts of reports not being FCRA regulated. So how do I force the credit headers to be cleaned from companies like equifax that share bad information with LexisNexus? It should be illegal.

I've wrote and emailed the CRA about wrong addresses, I've been in the same address for 30 years. This year they still have 2 previous addresses for me that I never resided at! Will contact them again this year!! The other thing I noticed is they don't pay attention to how many hard inquiries they give to debt collectors, wnd guess what? The debt collectors tos don't care if it's wrong address, they prefer sending it there!

I have had two collections for housing show up on my credit reports. They were both opened around the same time one month apart. They are in states I've never lived. I reached out to the collection agency all they say is they used all my information. I have informed them that I am a victim of identity and that those collections does not belong to me. I have lived in my current home for over 14 yrs. Every time I file a dispute with the credit bureaus it always come back as accurate. If someone has stolen my identity then of course all the information will match up. I have mailed them copies of utilities bills, mortgage statements, personal id and a lot of other documents showing that I was living in my current home at that time. I also filed a dispute with the FTC. I see why we have so many thieves in this world because they have it easy. The people try to live right and do the right things are the one's that suffers. Can someone please give me some advice on what I should do next.

You can report identity theft at

You will provide details about what happened and create an Identity Theft Report. You can send copies of the Identity Theft Report to credit reporting companies, collection agencies and other businesses where your information was misused.

If you have an FTC Identity Theft Report, credit reporting companies must honor your request to remove fraudulent information from your credit report. This is called blocking. Once information is blocked, companies can’t report the debt or try to collect it from you.

I try to apply for the citiback double card and was denied credit . they said that i lacked income. I make 11000 a year. I called them they said that they don't have a income minimum. Go figure ?

I was an Expedia breexmch from Sept. 2017 and did not find out why this nightmare started until July or August of this year per chance by reading an article. I answered a few questions and THAT is where it happened. They said I was ttoo late to hmgmqualify for their help, I asked if they ever attempted to contact me about the breech and I already knew the answer was no. Now I did qualify for help, but, I can't get a hold of a live person for anything and I didn't know how to approach any of it. I was paying my for protection with Lexington Law when it hapoened.. They won't help me either. Report to sherrif-told me to stay off of phone and internet. I reported to 3 times, the FTC, the FCC and I am so exhausted. I need a small loan to get up and running safely again but can't get help from anyone. If you don't have a computer due to hacking it is very difficult to get any help. Eso. Mental health issues too.
