Stopping unwanted phone calls and text messages

Unwanted phone calls or random text messages seem to come at all hours. They bug you at work, interrupt your dinner, or wake you up when you’re sound asleep. I think we can all agree they’re a real nuisance. Did you know they could also be a scam?

If your phone number is one of the more than 217 million numbers on the Do Not Call Registry, you’ve taken action to stop most unwanted sales calls. The law allows political calls, calls from charitable organizations, informational calls, calls about debts you owe, and phone surveys, as well as calls from companies you’ve done business with or gave permission to call.

If you get an unwanted sales call or a robocall—a recorded message that’s pitching a product or service— it’s probably a scam. The unscrupulous businesses behind these calls use autodialers to make thousands of calls a minute and don’t bother to check if the numbers are on the Do Not Call Registry. Don’t press buttons to request to speak to someone or be taken off the call list. You’ll just end up getting more unwanted calls. Hang up and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at or 1-888-382-1222.

If you’re getting repeated calls from the same number, you might want to ask your service provider to block the number; for calls from different numbers, ask if they offer a service to block unwanted calls. You can also buy a call blocking device. Getting calls on your mobile phone? There’s an app for that. Actually, there’s more than one. Look in your mobile app store or marketplace.

What about those random text messages? It’s illegal for a company to send you a text message if it doesn’t have your permission, barring a few exceptions. If you get a random text message from a number you don’t recognize that says you won something or asks you to confirm some personal information, don’t text back or click on links. Report it to your provider at 7726 (SPAM) and to the FTC at or 1-888-382-1222.

207-632-8286; 206-632-8287. Robocall from “Heather” re pay down debt. Is calling from multiple similar numbers where the last digit varies. Am on do not call registry. Reported and blocked. Also said do not call me again. But it’s a robocall so that was ignored.

They need to be doing something about Rachel from Card Services, I get that call every day on landline and cell and it is always a spoofed number so blocking it does not help. They need to track these scammers down. Always someone from India on the other end when you press 1 and pressing the other number does not take you off the list.

The call was automated at first, offering car part warranties for cars 2007 or newer. Usually these type of calls give you the option to press a certain number for an option (press 1 for a representative, for example), but this one did not. The recording prompts you to wait for an available representative after awkward gaps of silence which made me think it was a scam and not just typical telemarketing. I waited until a representative answered which was only about two minutes. This particular scammer had the works. Background music, a voice saying "we appreciate your business". It almost sounded like a customer service representative line. When the so called "representative" answered, he went straight into business mode after a greeting asking me to verify the make, model, and year of my car. I said, "No need for that. Just want you to remove me from your calling list." The man made some strange noise, almost like a grunt. Then the phone call audio became muffled and I could clearly hear my tv sound over the phone. I thought maybe someone in my household picked up the phone during my call with the scammer, but no one touched the phone. The scammer had an accent that wasn't from the US. I'm no expert, but I'll guess he was Indian. He hung up the phone and I called back to see if this was indeed a business or not. The phone rang until going to the voicemail of a person named TEHANI TRAN. The voicemail specifically said, "This is TEHANI TRAN, leave a message and I'll get back with you." I called once from my home phone number, which is what he originally called. I called a second time from my cell phone while using a code to block my number. He did not answer either time. It went to voicemail after about 5 rings both times. I googled the number and it is not tied to any businesses. This is a cell phone number. If I had known he would hang up so quickly, I would have milked the conversation for more information. The number the scammer called from was 1 813-442-8309. Hopefully this helps someone from being scammed.

You reall y need the do more to crack down on insolicited calls like credot card companies. Getting on do not call does not help. Blocking calls does not help. They just start using another number. I have all i can do to take care of my 96 year old mother without being harrassed.

509-288-4623 IRS scan,. They had some choice words for me

I am getting hundreds of calls. They never leave a message. Some calls come in with 800 numbers and these phone numbers switch to 4 or 5 digit numbers. Sometimes will be 10 - 12 long. My gastro doctors name comes up and nonsensical numbers can change 4 to 5 times. I don't know what to do. Can some one explain this to me? Thank you.

Scammers can easily fake caller ID numbers. They even can match the first six digits of your own number, which is called “neighbor spoofing.” The urge to answer can be tough to resist, since you might worry it’s a neighbor who needs help, or the school nurse.

If you see a number like this on your caller ID, remember that it could be faked. Call blocking services that block or flag unwanted calls can help. These services include mobile apps, features built into your mobile phone, cloud-based services, call-blocking devices, or services provided by your phone service carrier.

1:11 AM. You've got to be kidding me with our phone on the do not call list?
Medical Alarms 854-999-4407. What good is the do not call list?

Recently I’ve been getting about 6 or 7 spam calls a day. I never answer and I block each number after they call but it’s all from different numbers! It’s driving me crazy! Should I just change my number? My number is on the no call list I’m just at my wits end with this. I’ve always gotten spam calls but never this many. It’s insane. They start at 10am and go until 7 or 8 pm. I never know if it’s an important number or not so I have to wait and see if they leave a voicemail. Is there something else I can do? So frustrated. #firstworldprobs

Why don't we see or hear of major fines being placed on companies or individuals for violating the so called "Do Not Call List" No consequence more violate it as I'm getting at least 3 calls a day.

Someone earlier asked "why are they calling at 3am if they're trying to sell...who'll buy [being pissed at being woken up]?"

I think the answer is 2-fold:

(1) If it's a robocall, they could be trying to electronically distill "good number" from "junk numbers" so they can re-sell a list of "leads". So if they have a list of 50,000 working numbers and you answered, they can now add your number to the list so they have 50,001 "working" numbers and resell the list to other telemarketers.

(2) maybe trying a pressure sale when you're startled and not thinking "have arrest warrant for your son, send money for bail" if your son is in a diff state

Just guessing and annoyed as hell

I am getting calls from a restricted number..when going to the details of the restricted caller there is no number to report. I get calls up to 5 or more times a day. Which equals to over 80+ in the last month. Is there no way to stop this? And these restricted calls haven't stopped for the last couple months

Ive had the same number since 2004. For the first maybe five or six years I would frequently receive calls from bill collectors for a Treasure Hammond. Eventually those have ceased and now I constantly get calls for a Maria Palermo. Most of the time I do not answer and just directly blick the call. When I do answet they are almost always related to home ownership, I say there is nobody here by that name and they continue only to hang up the second I say I do not own a home.
I must block an average of two or three numbers a day (totaling hundreds of blocked numbers over the years). Still they keep coming... I receive more spam calls than real calls so I have become immune to even hearing my phone ring and often miss important calls as a result!!
Ive read many of the above comments and realize there is unlikely any real solution to the problem. But I am not ready to give up yet!!

I am getting calls from a (904) 516-5989 saying they are from Medicare on a recorded line and then hang up. I know they can't be from medicare and call every day, several times a day. Have you heard of this?

Please stop calls coming to my phone, I filled a voice complaint but the caller keeps calling its an 859-203 #with changing the last 4 digits each time. I block them out but they still call. Thank you

I've been receiving robocalls, live telemarketers, and text messages from solicitors since 2015. I don't know how it started. I can't seem to find that info anywhere. Apparently we have a better chance of walking on water and through perdition and flames than getting this to stop. Most of the calls I get are from local numbers and the they look very similar to numbers in my contact list, just mixed up. For example, if a number in my contact list is 123-456-7890 the caller will use 123-456-8790 in hopes that I'll see those numbers, mistake it for a known acquaintance and pick up.
The fact that the numbers are so close to those in my contacts scares me to no end. Not knowing HOW it
happened or HOW to stop it is even worse.
LOL as I sit here typing this I just got two texts. One from someone trying to sell me a house, I am not in the market. The other advertising "sexy ladies" and giving me sites to find them. I am a heterosexual woman and not interested. It used to be that you had to at some point click on something related to the spam that was being sent to you. They needed SOME TYPE of permission for this type of thing. WTH?!
Is changing my phone number the only option I have STOP NEIGHBOR SPOOFING? If so, how can I be sure it won't happen again if they have my contact list.
BTW-Someone called me about a month ago. She was angry and said that I'd called her, I hadn't. She kept insisting, I hung up. I wonder now if she was having the same problem or if she was spoofing me. I called a # back once and it was a hardware store in another city in my state.
Only one of the telemarketers I ever spoke to had an accent from another country, I suspect India. All the rest spoke very clear English and I had no problem understanding them. They were definitely American.
A lot the texts I get have numbers in the words. For example, instead of WORD it’ll be W0RD or instead of SINGLE it’ll read S1NGLE. Not sure if this is important or not, but I thought it was weird.

I keep getting calls from 607-241-2454 claiming to be the IRS filing a lawsuit for fraud. When I call back they answered IRS. I hung up and called back they answered United States Treasury. I used a landline to call back not my cell phone.

Ok I keep getting spammed by these random numbers that are all one number off and when you pick up no one answers. The problem is when you call that number it is a different person and a actual real person. The fact that the person that used to have my number most likely gave it out is scary. They get a new number each time. They most likely want me to say yes or no to get voice verification so they can get into bank accounts. You can block them but it hardly does anything. I even made my greeting the curb your enthusiasm theme so now they have to listen to it.

The method they are using to contact you sounds like spoofing.

I've received several phone calls from 330-400-7890 they have even called me terrible names these people sound like foreigners. Its horrible as if Americans are being harassed in there own homes!

March '18 Scam / Bogus / Pestering / nuisance / repeated / vulgar / obscene phone calls

How do I turn in these repeat callers after I have blocked their numbers and told them I am on the DO NOT CALL List. I get 10-25 daily and am sick of it. Please help me out here. Also getting them at work. How are they getting away with this stuff!!! Thanks

Calls received leaving VM saying "ignoring message would be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or grand jury for federal offense..."
I'm so tired of these companies getting away with taking any of my time.
Is there any recourse?

I got call from +1 2024556879 and +1 2564556879 he said he is calling from IRS and due to miss match in IT filling they are arresting me aware of that no

Got a call twice that leaves the message "You have an unclaimed reward of $100" from 3033071400, weird thing is, I googled this number and it says it belongs to a KFC and a&w, those guys might want to know whos using their number for scam calls

I need to block this number 2049836337 they claim they are the IZrS

once again received phone call from robo caller who uses 253-236-2595 to make robo calls....
Registered on the FTC DNCL many years ago but that has not stopped the constant phone calls that interrupt and UPSET me hourly. New tactic this 253 robo caller is now using...they have greeting message telling everyone to input their phone number and then the harassed caller will be connected with someone...ROFL!!! HOPE no one falls for this ploy... The FTC should fine each robo caller that US Citizens report $100 for every robo call these illegal outfits make. That would help everyone...Am sick of leaving my phoneS off the hook to have fe minutes of peace and quiet in my home.

We have received two or more phone calls per day from a Las Vegas area telephone - 702-731-7233. They never speak but you can hear them breathing and then they hang up. How do we get this stopped? Thank you.

BS I have reported these calls for ignoring my repeated requests to stop calling and simply calling home and cell phones over and over. No one does anything effective to stop these jerks, who will occasionally mock me or simply act as if they are from the government. Threaten to cause me legal problems if I don't co-operate. Now I just block the number and wait for the next call from them.

‭+63 932 480 8851‬ davidallan 243@ This guy messaged me and said he is from US and is currently in the Philippines looking for a serious relationship. I am a male kid and curios to why and how he has my number, I suspect this guy is a scammer. Please look into it.

Got a message just this morning from the same guy though different phone number

Got exactly the same message this morning but with a different phone number.

what is the number that he use?... I also receive the same message but different number.

these are numbers that kept calling too many times and unwanted on my end. I believe that one or more may be a scam or may be doing this as an aggression: 912-216-9937, 912-216-9973, 912-200-3195,912-216-9972, 912-304-4810, 912-319-0063, 912-350-8404, 912-349-7956, 912-438-8267, 912-454-8183, 912-629-3436,912-629-7503, 912-629-7505, 912-629-7506, 912-290-8580, 1-732-481-2902, 1-618-307-6923, 1-281-204-2528, 412-967-0124 (stays silent after I say hello/ no voice mail each time), 1-912-271-0026 (left a racist comment), 912-660-7039 and 912-667-6662 ( last two numbers are known and I was offered service on craigslist by them that they did not do but was paid, they did not refund. I suspect that they may be taking advantage of others on craigslist). I have been given an aggressive attack of many phone calls that are in repetition of calling too often and these are some of them. I hope that they may be investigated in case of any scam that may be existing or in case of these calls being of an intentional personal attack in nature. Thank you.

(678) 389-8815 GEORGIA

You that IRS is filing a lawsuit against you as after the audit we found out that there was a fraud and misconduct on your tax filing which you are hiding from the Federal government. This needs to be rectified immediately. To get more information about this case file do return the call on our direct line number. The number is 678-389-8815. Again 678-389-8815. Thank you.

I just got a fake call from this.they asking my ATM pin.

The company I work for keeps getting "011" and "PRIVATE" calls asking for another company. Even though I continue to tell them we are not them, they call back at least 24 times a day. I've called the other company and they have no idea why we get these calls, all their numbers are published correctly. I assume it is a calling list they are using and I cannot get anyone to correct it. Also, we have pretended to be the person they are calling for to see what they want, and they hang up. Yes, they hang up! UGH! 99.8% of the time it is the same accent...sounds like it is from the same calling center/same country.
Does anyone have any ideas how to stop this harrassment?

Got a call from unknown number (‭(929) 800-4547‬) while driving to work this morning Didn't answer. They called 2 more times and left a voice mail. (“You will be taking under custody by the local police as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get __________ so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 929-800-4547 I repeat 929-800-4547 thank ). Since it wasn't even proper English, pretty sure it is a scam. Got to work and they called 12 more times. Called.them back to say "STOP". Guy that answered mumbled something and hung up on me. Called two more times. Hung up on me. Third time he said "Why do.yiu keep calling over and over". I told him because HE was calling me over and over. I asked him who he worked for and he said "IRS". I think I laughed and he hung up again. They have called me SIXTY NINE TIMES today. I have AT&T Call Protect App. It blocks the calls and lists them. I also called local police since his voicemail said they would be a reading me. They said it was definitely a scam. (Had come to that conclusion early this morning) I

I answer thank you for calling woof n fluff this is melody how can I help you, I hear nothing on the line then they hang up. I try to call back. Line either says forwarded or ask to leave a message. What type a call is this? I would imaging if it was a customer they'd speak up. I often block their number but fearful I'm blocking a potential client. These calls really interfier with my business. Will getting a call blocker app help? I had set one up with mobile and it didn't seem to do any good.

I hsve gotten 5 calls every hour today 4/30/18 from APPLE INC 816-448-9200. I have no dealings with Apple, nor do I have any Apple products. It is a real nuisance to get these calls.

718-430-9274 keeps calling plus several other numbers that I have blocked. My research says that 10 people living in the same residence or building is responsible for this call and many others. Since their name(s) are known, why aren't they arrested and locked away? They must be sickos.

I reported this number 4.30.18 and called and followed the instructions to opt out. They have been calling for quite some time regarding free magazines subscriptions. And, they are STILL calling. I have asked them to stop. I have told them they have been reported. What will get them to stop???????????????

I get calls from number 682-262-7031 and it’s from an app and they put any number they want you to think it is the number is a weatherford texas numbet and it’s a government issued phone.

so over unwanted phone calls from telemarketers. I am on the do not call list and continue to gets calls everyday. i probably have 300 numbers blocked and still get them. why bother with fo not call if it doesnt help. Over it

203-590-9875 914-829-6153 218-429-5300 These are new numbers that frequently contact me in regards to (Legal Action being taken against me A.K.A this is a SCAM) Here are ways to avoid more calls from SPOOFED numbers calling your cellphone 1.)Do not PICK UP THE PHONE ( they may call you several times a day, let it go to voice mail. Be patient, do not call them back!!!) 2.) Once you answer the phone to speak to them with frustration or to find out who may be on the other end, IT IS OVER FOR YOU! (Your phone number has just been captured and will be spoofed to call their next victim with the same old tired Legal Action Scam) 3. For Android smartphone users (Please make use of your phone benefits by BLACKLISTING the number. Yes they will still harass but your phone will send their number right to voicemail.) 4. Contact your phone service provider and warn them of incoming calls that are harassing you! (Make sure you the number is the same that calls you everyday) 5. Do not read incoming text messages from phone numbers you don't recognize. (if you open the text, the malicious code downloads into your phone without you realizing. Next thing happens is people gain EASY access to your phone being able to invade your privacy by reading your text messages incoming and outgoing.!) 5. Dont connect to FREE PUBLIC WIFI. Many business like food establishments offer free wifi. (Connect to an unsecure network leaves your phone open to advanced technology users that can see everything you are searching for on the internet by mobile. Do yourself a BIG favor and use your mobile 4g data if you are going to use the internet when you are out of the house.) 6. Factory Reset your smartphone (Most of you dont know that you have malware, spyware and or adware in your phone. You get so excited downloading these Social Media APPS from Google Play not realizing the terms of agreements you are saying yes to before you download. Some APPS actually put in there terms that they need permission to access your camera and text messages which is HUGE INVASION OF PRIVACY!!!!!!)
