Stopping unwanted phone calls and text messages

Unwanted phone calls or random text messages seem to come at all hours. They bug you at work, interrupt your dinner, or wake you up when you’re sound asleep. I think we can all agree they’re a real nuisance. Did you know they could also be a scam?

If your phone number is one of the more than 217 million numbers on the Do Not Call Registry, you’ve taken action to stop most unwanted sales calls. The law allows political calls, calls from charitable organizations, informational calls, calls about debts you owe, and phone surveys, as well as calls from companies you’ve done business with or gave permission to call.

If you get an unwanted sales call or a robocall—a recorded message that’s pitching a product or service— it’s probably a scam. The unscrupulous businesses behind these calls use autodialers to make thousands of calls a minute and don’t bother to check if the numbers are on the Do Not Call Registry. Don’t press buttons to request to speak to someone or be taken off the call list. You’ll just end up getting more unwanted calls. Hang up and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at complaints.donotcall.gov or 1-888-382-1222.

If you’re getting repeated calls from the same number, you might want to ask your service provider to block the number; for calls from different numbers, ask if they offer a service to block unwanted calls. You can also buy a call blocking device. Getting calls on your mobile phone? There’s an app for that. Actually, there’s more than one. Look in your mobile app store or marketplace.

What about those random text messages? It’s illegal for a company to send you a text message if it doesn’t have your permission, barring a few exceptions. If you get a random text message from a number you don’t recognize that says you won something or asks you to confirm some personal information, don’t text back or click on links. Report it to your provider at 7726 (SPAM) and to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint or 1-888-382-1222.

What if I receive a call and I ask them to remove my number and they flat our refuse and tell me if I don't apply for their loan they will slap me across the face and they will harass me until I do as they say?

Phone # 860-333-1775 scammer in a robotics voicemail leaves a message saying they have money for me.
I am reporting another scammer under name Ernest who is bombarding me with texting on my phone using different phone numbers: 561-569-4839;978-650-8090;708-879-5357, saying I have unclaimed money. Please, block it, take actions!

I have received a phone call at least 10 times today in a 2 hour time window. The number is (202) 202-2222. These people need to stop calling me because it’s interfering with my job and everyday life.

Hi everyone......I've learned a lot today from all you good folks out there who have been suffering from the same crap I've been dealing with..thanks for all the advice.....this HAS got to stop.....this mess has to be seriously dealt by some one of these organizations......FTC, Atty. General, Etc. or some other way. Life and time is too precious for us to be spending so much time dealing with this invasion of privacy...hang in there folks.......

I keep receiving calls on my cell phone from 614 410 3505. After checking my voicemail and calling the number a foreigner answers the phone I have to this man several times that i wasn't interested in what they were trying to sell and to stop calling. Needless to say I received a call from the same the number with the same voice message left on my voicemail.

Unlike the National Do Not Call List hope p0rn operation, this "unwanted phone calls" piece or the Hegelian dialectic is the well-funded psychological operation counterpart with the purpose of wasting people's time and energy.

Don't answer your personal line unless you have the caller's number in your contacts list. Be deliberate about who you talk with on the phone. Do the same when it comes to email. No more arbitrary communicating over their communications systems.

In the meantime, build your own communications technology protocols that have privacy AND security built in (those ideas are not mutually exclusive - they are interdependent). Embrace the hand-shake idea where no call, text, or email can get through without there being a way to authenticate that it is a human-to-human exchange and that the caller is calling for a legitimate reason before the recipient even receives the call, text, or email.

Let's extirpate these time-wasting operations by the powers that shouldn't be (TPTSB).

How about a autodialer that I'm never able to call back on amd all they do is ring till I answer and never say a thing.. Keeps the call open for about 1-2 mins then hangs up.. No sound...

I just received a call 385-658-5581 ID name Advent Christian Village. IT WAS A SALES CALL. I live here at ACV & did not know the person. It was a sales call. I called at back and no one answered. I think this person has stooled someone's telephone number. The voice on the sales call I recognized(she calls several times a week from different 658 numbers).I sure would like to stop her from calling

I am registered on the Do not call list and I heard about the calls from Direct TV and when I went to see if my number was listed they said that my number was not listed but I know I should be and I just received another call from Direct TV from phone number 800-531-5000 so despite the lawsuit they are still calling!!!

1-703-225-9090 keeps calling and does not answer, and hangs up no matter how many times i say to stop harassing me. yes- there is a phone number block option, but this is ridiculous. if i block every scam call i receive, the list would seem endless. i am beginning to wonder if they are recording our voices so that they can use them to break into voice recognition devices.

I have blocked one of these numbers and they still somehow leave at least 3 voicemails a day for some bs spam.
These robocalls are getting beyond annoying to the point of disruptive for businesses. Please figure out how to stop this nonsense!

This is the message they leave: Very serious emergency and time sensitive we are calling you from investigation team of I.R.S. We have just received a notification regarding your tax filings from the headquarters which will get expired in next 24 working hours and once it get expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are 4 serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 347-434-3691 I repeat 347-434-3691 thank you. I called them back they answer the phone IRS, The guy barely spoke English and I believe he said his name was "Andy" (OHHH - OK!). I asked for a supervisor - Andy said that he was a Manager (OHHH - OK!) I told Andy that there was a mistake and that I want him to remove my number. "Andy" again informed me that I will be going to jail if I do not resolve this IRS dept today. I told him to remove my number or come and arrest me-- JUST STOP CALLING !!!! so fed up with these solicitation and scam calls

"HEALTH HOTLINE" scammers keep calling using different phone numbers, and they keep leaving voicemail messages. Can't the FTC make these people stop??

If I don't recognize the caller I let it go to voice mail. My message says I only take calls from my contacts list. If it's a ligitimate call they leave a message.

I receive at least 10 calls per day from different phone numbers who are robocallers. Is there any way I can report all of these numbers at one time instead of filing a report on each one?

I get several spam calls a day. In the last 24 hours alone: 202-860-2480, 202-860-2466, 202-860-2463, 202-860-2461. Do you see a pattern? I'm on the no-call lists. I press 9 and they take me to a sales person who claims they're not selling anything. Plus I get a lot of robocalls: "Hey, it's Rachel..."

Getting calls from 830-...-4832 she had the number 682-262/7031 but changed it and now she’s doing the same thing calling prank and she’s using the app and she did cchange her number thro safe link and it is a new bra Texas number and her name is sherry it is a government issued lifeline phone Beware she call all people I turn her into police

I have received two calls from 585-626-6130 says Webster NY. Old IRS scam that leaves a message threatening to put you in jail unless you call them

I have a company in Van Nuys California that won't stop calling me. It's called green world pro and they have several revolving numbers so if it gets reported to ftc they just use another number. They have been allowed to harass the whole community with a phone for a long long time, and no one seems to stop these jerks.

U.S. Online Pharmacy - most people receive calls from different numbers. So far I have blocked 876 numbers from them. They even spoof real peoples numbers. They are relentless. In the last three days I received 79 calls from them. Although the numbers are blocked using AT&T call protect app, It still logs the calls.

The last option is to pay AT&T for a new number and go through the contacts to let them know. Something I hate doing.

Since they call from India, I see no help in the USA.

I am getting phone calls/messages threatened me "Transcription Beta Blanck and next 24 working hours and once again expired after that you will be taken under custody by local police and there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we will request you to to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 585-633-0275 I repeat 585-633-0275 Thank you." I am very upset because I know this is scam. How do I stop this people from calling me?

What do I do with Vehicle Warranty or Auto Protection Network? They call me twice a day with different phone numbers.

The best way to get rid of a caller that is harassing you is to tell them you have a fiduciary and aren't allowed to handle your own money. They have no answers for that and should leave you alone.

I am on Do Not Call list. I still get up to 10 a day! I researched on number. Thy had some area for same next three digits and about 50-90+ last four digits. I always block them which does not good as they just start from the first when they run out of numbers or just get more.
I also am now getting texts for a business deal. I STOP THEM BUT AGAIN
They just switch numbers. HELP!!! It is out of control.

I am on the do not call list. I get up to a dozen calls a day from the same service provider for an insurance sales company. I have BLOCKED the numerous extensions they have, and they just come up with another one. The few times I've stayed on the line to talk to a person, I've said remove my number, and they hung up on me. I use TWO phone apps to block calls, and they still make their way through. I can't cut my sound off, because I have a paralyzed son next door and like to keep my phone on in case of emergencies. These calls run from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. even on Sundays. I am at my wits end.

I just got a really threatening call from 929-268-1082 and came here to find out how to report it.
Terrible invasion of privacy unwanted calls are in general. I only answer calls I know the number.
My dad keeps people on the phone for a long time messing with them for fun- funny stories.

I have received 34 calls within a 4 day span. It’s coming from a medical insurance salesman. He continues to call even though I asked to be removed from their list. I have blocked 6 different numbers that he calls from. This is one of the numbers 615-205-1297. Does anyone know which company this is?

I have received one or two rings from different Nos like 5656598980, 5777787878, 6566578900,5777744545 so many calls every time from different Nos. How to stop like that calls? Please advice or take necessary action.

I've been receiving numerous weekly and daily calls: from men threatening that the IRS will have me arrested; from Elizabeth re: her vacation rentals; from Veronica re: reducing my debt; from dozens of guys/gals from India/Philippines saying I have a dangerous computer bug that needs to be fixed or a service contract agreement the needs to be refunded. It goes on and on. I don't push any buttons to connect, just hang up. The more I report the more I get. Now the calls are coming in from local numbers. Is it even worth spending time reporting them? What is the FTC/anyone doing?? And, by the way, it's egregious that people have access to business phone numbers and email addresses from the Secretary of State, and also access to contact information when one registers a website. I received nearly 50 calls from overseas after registering my website and was told I didn't have the option to shield that information. We should have the right to keep that information private!!

I have been receiving at least one/day robocalls from same outfit about some sort of medical device for back support or some such. It is the exact same recording, each time coming from a different number. Here are the last two numbers: 9703215471 9703182682 I do live in the 970 area code

I’m looking for work and for months I’ve been getting several calls every day from New Mexico area Code 575 from a job center. I’ve asked them not to call me many times and they hang up me when I also ask them more information. I block them on my Verizon account, but they rotate the numbers. I can’t find the company or companies they are working for on an internet search. They are unlisted. Same for when I call back one of the numbers. I have 50 job applications with my current phone number so I can’t get a new number and I shouldn’t have to. Verizon and the BBB have not been able to help. When I get new job I can change my number, but until then I need some advice with this problem.

951-575-2324 called me and I was sleep, when they asked my name I said Yes and they shout and clap. Then they asked another question and I said Yes again and they shout out again and hang up. Now I am scare what they are going to do? for all this crazy things that it is happened around, fraud, and identity thief.

i tried to get quotes for health insurance online. before I could even read the quotes the phone calls started. Over the last 3 days i have received over 50 calls. I block the number that calls, then they just change the last 1 or 2 numbers and are able to get through. This morning i was so made, the lady would not take no for an answer, so I started calling the number she called from, 17 times and asked her how she like it. Finally she blocked my number so I could not call her back. I do not have time to sit here and do this for every number they use. So frustrating. The FCC says file a complaint, but you have to do a separate complaint for each number. I do not have time for that either.I have had my number for 15 years and do not want to have to change it due to a bunch of jerks.

If you think the "Do no Call" registry does ANYTHING, I have a bridge to sell you. Forget that....PERIOD. It does absolutely no good. A waste of time. Do you actually believe scammers pay any attention to that? They are ALL using spoofed phone numbers now.

Yes! They are spoofed numbers with your own area code so you are more likely to think it’s real. Also they revolve numbers and NOW all the texts are coming in! I have literally hundreds of blocked numbers and have been on registry since 2008 and still get more calls everyday. I’ve silenced my phone during the day with dnd but when I do need to answer because of real business it’s a pain. Isn’t there any protections against the texts and calls?

I am getting numerous phone calls that I do not recognize and some of them more than once. Do I have to fill out a complaint for EACH number? Can I just list the numbers that keep coming up on my phone?

I have been...ever since I have been getting unwanted, unwelcome, uninvited, unsolicited robocalls just now I have been reporting them every time I get one...and I am just downright sick of them. They are nothing but rude...even though I have been blocking them after reporting them, I still get some unwanted, unwelcome, uninvited, and unsolicited robocall...Ugh...how did they even get my number when I don’t even feel comfortable not giving it out to anyone I don’t trust. I have a nagging feeling they desperately want something from me.

First just recorded messages and then a man answered he stated that I owed back taxes. Then said I had complains filed against me. If I didn't response they would have cop come to my house and arrest me. He said that he was Investigator Criminal Board for the IRS. Calls came from Rochester MY and then Washington area.

Block calls since 2005!!!!

650-431-3954 scammer call - robo on a donotcall listed number

I keep getting calls from different number from a place that says they're calling from a "document service dept" for a claim I have against me in Harris County. I know I don't have anything pending and that if I did I'd get served or mail or something, so I asked a few questions and kept getting the run around. They just give me a phone number and insist I call. I asked them to mail me something and they said no. They have my address, full name and last 4 of SSN so I say, "you found me, how can I help you?" The response is I need to call a number. I'm not going to do that. So, I blocked the numbers they call from but now they've called my husband, brother and mother. If they have all this info why not just send me something.

517-319-2389 Lansing, MI Says he is from Microsoft. Wants to fix my computer. Told him I didn't have a computer, he hung up. Has called us back 5 more times, and hung up.

A "Medical Group" phone number: (505) 300 2789 harassed me almost all week! They are not robots, they told me that they call because "I mentioned back pain" (But I never mentioned nothing, I do not know them! They asked me for my insurance ID number...I was rude, tired of hackers!

Caller ID showed 1-855-1666 on 7/3/18 at 4:26 PM. Female voice stated "You have been expired. All services on your Windows will be stopped. To reinstall call our toll free number." Caller left voice mail while I listened.

I finally got the phone solicitors to stop calling me by making a new greeting on my answering machine that has a long pause after I say "Hello".

What you have to do is say, " Hello " and then wait 2 seconds.

Then I say " I am sorry but we are unable to come to the phone right now , so after the tone would you please leave a message ".

The "Hello" with the long pause will cause their computers to think there is a live person on the phone and then it connects you to a live phone solicitor.

Then after they hang up on you by pressing "Release" on their phones 2 or 3 times, their computer system will automatically take your number off of their auto dial list.

Thank you. Finally someone has something else to try.

I'm on the Do Not Call Registry but continue to receive calls from phone numbers 561-908-7691, 561-908-7520, 902-3026, 903-3849 and list goes on. They're robo generated calls that leave a recorded half message in Spanish (it's not a complete message). Try calling the number back and you get nothing but beeps!
