Stopping unwanted phone calls and text messages

Unwanted phone calls or random text messages seem to come at all hours. They bug you at work, interrupt your dinner, or wake you up when you’re sound asleep. I think we can all agree they’re a real nuisance. Did you know they could also be a scam?

If your phone number is one of the more than 217 million numbers on the Do Not Call Registry, you’ve taken action to stop most unwanted sales calls. The law allows political calls, calls from charitable organizations, informational calls, calls about debts you owe, and phone surveys, as well as calls from companies you’ve done business with or gave permission to call.

If you get an unwanted sales call or a robocall—a recorded message that’s pitching a product or service— it’s probably a scam. The unscrupulous businesses behind these calls use autodialers to make thousands of calls a minute and don’t bother to check if the numbers are on the Do Not Call Registry. Don’t press buttons to request to speak to someone or be taken off the call list. You’ll just end up getting more unwanted calls. Hang up and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at complaints.donotcall.gov or 1-888-382-1222.

If you’re getting repeated calls from the same number, you might want to ask your service provider to block the number; for calls from different numbers, ask if they offer a service to block unwanted calls. You can also buy a call blocking device. Getting calls on your mobile phone? There’s an app for that. Actually, there’s more than one. Look in your mobile app store or marketplace.

What about those random text messages? It’s illegal for a company to send you a text message if it doesn’t have your permission, barring a few exceptions. If you get a random text message from a number you don’t recognize that says you won something or asks you to confirm some personal information, don’t text back or click on links. Report it to your provider at 7726 (SPAM) and to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint or 1-888-382-1222.

I received a call from some woman, can`t say lady, informing me that I had spoken to someone in her company. Well that was a lie because neither had I called them nor spoke to anyone in her COMPANY for any reason especially something that would have given her reason to call me. That is what I told her so then she started to argue. I hung up and long behold I received a call back from her with the following message:" Hello M. ......
Uhm, I am calling you back because you don`t listen you just running your big fat mouth. I said that you spoke with someone from my company, I never said you called us, calm down, not good for ya, you know how it is on old people."
Nice huh....guess they target mostly `old` people, according to what she said she defenitly thought I was old.

im getting calls about free grants and i keep telling them to take me off there calling list but they keep calling at least 10 times a day and they are all different numbers but for the same thing.i just now hung up with one and as soon as i layed my phone down there was another one calling. i registered with the no call thing but it hasnt helped at all. what can i do?

Keep a good whistle by the phone. Give them a blast on it. You may want to whisper first so that they are straining to hear. Air horn works well also

We are getting calls daily sometimes numerous ones in the same day. They come from Salvisa, Kentucky from phone number 859 350-0110,0099;0096;0118;0122;0123;0127;0129;0116 for example. Windstream only allows blocking 21 numbers,if this keeps up Salvisa will eat all those 21 blocks up. We are disabled and this is disrupting our life. How can we stop it?

If you're getting a lot of calls, you have useful details for a complaint.  Please report your experience at ftc.gov/complaint. You also might want to look into the blocking service, nomorobo.com, which won the FTC’s 2013 Robocall Challenge.

281-601-8234 called here and said that her name was Elizabeth and I stayed at one of their resorts lately. Liar. I did not. I told her that I was on the Do Not Call and she did not care. You have won a package to Disney. I kept telling her that I was on the Do Not Call. She did not care. She is annoying.

I am on the do not call registry, have been for a long time. I still get calls. Just today I have had this number 603-326-4495 call me 6 times starting at 11:53 am till now 5:38 pm. They have even left me 2 voice msgs so far. I have voice to text so it saves all my messages. Here is the message they left 2 times so far,the exact wording each time:... "Heard after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 603-326-4495 I repeat 603-326-4495"... My Son did dial that number and only stayed on long enough to hear a guy with an Indian accent say "you have reached the Internal Revenue Investigation Service" It's a real shame we have to live with this type of people threatening us, which is exactly what they are doing.

DoNotCall is a farce; vendors, scammers, etc use a multitude of phone numbers to call You/me multiple times with just a digit change , but all from the same boiler-room, server, address. or legitimate addresses that they work at and plug into - I've gotten calls from numbers listed as being in government bldgs. Strange to me no legitimate entity can foil this - so, implicitly the gov't is enabling this practice,

i am getting phone calls from this private number i do in fact have an idea who this is because i have heard the voice and it is someone i know i have told them to stop but how would i proceed to report this if the number is not listed.

Local phone companies have varying policies on whether to call the phone company or the police first. Some recommend that you first call the phone company's business office and explain the problem. A representative will connect you with the "annoyance desk." Other phone companies may require you to file a formal complaint with local law enforcement before they will deal with the matter. To find out what your phone company's policy is, contact the business office and ask for assistance.

My phone is Samsung Galaxi S3.Unfortunately a number like0025778060085 ( Like that others number ) etc is dialing . When i reset or switch off my phone then it will be stop . again after some times this number again come back.So try to solve it please.

Dear FTC:

Two months ago I received a call. Spammer claimed that records show that I stayed at one of their resorts, I was eligible for a special offer. As I've done before with spammers, I set the phone down and walked away as she yammered on. Then I heard her ask if I wanted to answer a few questions. That's when I got a wicked, but fun, idea. As she asked, "Hello, ma'am, may I ask you a few questions?" I walked over to the loo, phone in hand, and FLUSHED! Then I hung up. Haven't heard back from them since. May not have been the best solution but darn, it was satisfying!

Everyday all day call after call using fake caller ID numbers that appear to be local to fool you into answering then it's the same old scam. Doesn't do any good to block the number they just set up a different number to appear on your caller ID and call again and again. It really cost me money due to these calls. It either waste my time answering and having to deal with their garbage or I miss a legitimate business call if it's not one of these jerks scammers. I've been on the do not call list for years but it does no good with these people.

617-855 and they change the last four digits with every call. 617-944 and they also change the last for digits. My block list so super long at this point. I've tried to download "call blocking" apps but its just way too much work and still I get these calls every day back to back. If registering on this site doesn't work, then WHAT WILL??!

Please get my phone number and emails off of the annoying calls I tried to send a statement last night. Site stated there were problems with the site. I tried to send it this morning, but it was gone out my comment box.

# 876-588-8798 + 876-826-8518 they said that they are the Publishers Clearing House and they want you to go to Western Union and send them $220 for a form that they said they have to have before we can get the check in the car so and they're from Jamaica and she gave me names and everything. please just do not answer these calls thank you

Cell phone was receiving calls from different ghosted phone numbers at least twice a day. I know these are ghosted, (real phone numbers shown as the caller id), as I received a couple calls from some other victims one day asking who was I, as they received phishing calls from my phone number! Then saw on news over a month ago about an illegal robo-call operations being busted. And the calls stoppef!

Well, they are back up and running again. Just got a "call" from a listing in my own town! Stupid me, answered without hesitation as currently working to book funeral arrangements for my mother who passed. If you get a call from 603 801-3955, block it.

I keep receiving phone calls from random local numbers all beginning with (727) 515 but different last four numbers. When I answer, there is a pause and then an automated "good bye". What concerns me is that they appear to be cell phone numbers as my cell phone begins the same.

I don't answer strange numbers anymore. They keep calling and I keep not answer any number I don't recognize. I tell my friends and family to leave a message else, they will not speak with me if their caller ID is masked or unavailable.

Would like to report calls from 706-715-4731
I have blocked their numbers and they just use a different last 4. I have ask them at least 30 times to stop calling me and they continue to call and call. It is so annoying!!

Lately I have been getting calls from an unknown phone #. My sister said it was the government or something and that they wanted to talk to me. Most of the times all we do is just hang up. They call me on my home phone. I'm really scared that I might have done something bad or what. Idk. I just want them to stop calling me.

It should be against the law, for debt collectors to call phone numbers two years after the phone has been shut off in that person's name. I have a new /requested to be unlisted phone number, that I pay extra for monthly that has not been in service in this person's name since November of 2015.

I am receiving no less than 5 phone calls a day, looking for this person. Congress should pass a law, that debt collectors have to sue, in court, to attach the tax returns of these individuals, for debt owed under their social security number....which we ALL have to put down for any business that requires payment. They have their address, social security numbers, date of birth etc. NO PHONE CALLS SHOULD BE ALLOWED.

I tried to block numbers, which required a monthly fee...but they just call from another number and you are only allowed so many numbers to block. So, here we are ..PAYING...for someone else who is a loser and does not pay their bills. That is harassment. and we(my family) should not have to put up with something that has nothing to do with us. ... The government/Congress is useless to the law abiding tax paying citizens of the United States who pay their salaries.

I think the DO NOT CALL list should be exactly what it is called; DO NOT CALL!! ALL unsolicited callers should be blocked when you are registered on the DO NOT CALL list with no exceptions!

I keep getting a call from a number in Princeton Minnesota. I hear breathing for 5 seconds then the end call tones. I'm from Minnesota but don't know anyone from Princeton and they call me all the time I don't know what to do at this point it's harrasing me and bothering me and my husband

all day long i receive calls from 315-201-4600, 4606, 4623, 4621, 4590, 4585 ,4589 ....etc, etc.... All caller ID says is Romulus NY...it's not from a real person...Says its Helping Hands sometimes...Joe, Bonnie..says i can speak to a csr service rep, when i hit 2 to do so it says they are all busy and to email them at CSRNOW 2016 @ gmail. com...i havent done that yet...I do know that there is a correctional facility in Romulus but not sure if they are coming from there.I am on the Do Not Call registry and i've tried blocking them but every call has a different last 4 digits....Help!!!....

If you email them, you might start getting emails too. This article about blocking unwanted calls might have some ideas you can use, or you could ask your phone carrier if it offers blocking services.

I have gotten 40 calls in 2 months.. Have been on the no call since 2009..i told them the ones who are actually people that they were going to pay me 1500 a call.. It's a different number almost everytime...

Don't answer the damn phone! If it's an important call, they'll leave a message. All you're doing when you talk to them is add another live number to their lists--and raise your blood pressure. Be sensible!

How do you stop that calls that keep changing phone numbers! I mean I block the numbers each time they call and then I just get more calls from the same people "Vehicle warranty Dept" I mean how can this issue be resolved I signed up for the DNC List but thats not helping these people have out-smarted the system due to all the recent developments in Technology I get so many calls from phone numbers that have my same NPA and prefix that I think its a local call but its not. this is crazy someone needs to put an end to this practice. I man I can only block so many numbers I so tired of this everyday 2-3 times a day

Signing up on the "Do Not Call Registry" does NOTHING.
These Clowns don't care. I've changed Phones and Numbers.
Like the Emergency Broadcast System it doesn't work.

716-710-1330 Allied Interstate is a collection Agency trying to collect on a debt. Do not answer. Get a burner phone. Get your home phone to be a private number and unlisted number. If they still bother you then disconnected your home phone and only use a burner phone. Do not tell your bank or apply for any credit cards. They will give out your public information and the collection agency will get your new number. Just monitor your credit and your bank account very close.

i started getting calls on thursday, first time it came up on my caller ID as 9632 Syria, it was for some government grant, i told him the following, i am not interested, stop calling me, and to put me on their do not call list and then i hung up. well my phone immediately rang, it was now a restricted number, it was the same guy, and he started talking very nasty and vulger to me, i argued a bit and hung up. well he continued to call me about 23-24 more times that night. the next day he called about 20 times, i didnt answer every time, but when i did i yelled at him and told him to stop calling me. i also told him this was harassment. i have now got unknown calls blocked on my phone but my doctor calls me from a restricted number after hours cause i think she is on her personal phone and doesnt want all her patients to have her personal number, which i completely understand. now i dont want to go through the hassle of having my number changed, and i need to allow restricted numbers to come through. so now i dont know what to do. i did find an app that you can install on your cell phone that you could possibly collect money from these unwanted calls, and when he called on Friday 1 time it came up the 9632 number, and i reported the number within the app i had just mentioned, all the rest of his calls on Friday were restricted. and if i go to my call log online in my account his number shows 999-999-9999. so beware of this guy.

You understand that if he is calling from another country, like Syria, that they don't HAVE a Do-Not-Call list and don't care about US Laws? When you tell him "this is harassment he's just laughing at you. Their laws are not the same as ours. They're just going to call and call and call until you break. Every time you pick up it just confirms that they have good phone number and it makes it worse.
The US has a hard time tracking these people down and an even harder time taking legal action against them.
Many people complain about how little is being done and don't stop to realize that very little CAN be done if that other country has no laws against this sort of thing.

We need stronger regulations

calls before 9am. this is a scam and is always trying to get credit card info. Do not answer this number262-842-1109. someone needs to find out where this idiot is hiding and put a stop to it! Dont answer.

We keep getting calls from Officers Foundation at 501-254-7923. We do not answer and they hang to leave our number where it leaves a busy signal and we have to call and report it to be fixed. Now I won't it to stop.

Regular Unsolicited\Unwanted Bogus SCAM Land Line "Annoyance" Calls to my 303 Area Code LANDLINE Telephone System that were Auto Answered and NOT PERSONALLY Answered-Details: 1. My Landline Phone IS set to: 1. NO Annoying Audiable Ring. 2. Auto Answer, with my Recorded Message. Which I then RECORD and DOCUMENT, to be Picked up LATER at MY Convenience. As using EITHER the Government's "Do Not Call Registry", OR the Government "FTC-Federal Trade Commission's Complaints", are essentially USELESS, because the SCAMMERS and Telemarketers ARE able to BYPASS these so called "Protections". _____________________________

I received calls from this number everyday and every few hours a part. Here are the phone numbers: (774)539-0017, (607)203-8401, (908)360-8516, (978)881-0287, (845)335-1907. It was ROBO CALLS that offered me to saving energy bills in the house. It's really annoying. 6 months since I got my new number, I have been receiving this phone call non-stop vigorously. I even registered as Do Not Call list, but it seems not affected. I do not know what to do. It HAS TO BE STOP!!!

If you’re getting unwanted calls from a lot of different numbers, look into a call blocking solution. There are online call blocking services, call blocking boxes, and smartphone apps that block unwanted calls. Do an online search to look for reviews from experts and other users, and find out whether the service costs money.

Our article, Phone Scams, and blog post, Reducing Robocalls: Practical Tips & Tricks, have additional info that might be helpful.

I keep getting calls from 844-271-8006. Stating that I have a warrant out and that I have a pre authorization transaction and they need to discuss this with me. I never pre authorize anything. The latest person to call is a Charles Townsend. I'm getting tired of these calls

CALLS FROM 603-263-7091MANY TIMES A DAY

GOING ON FOR THREE WEEKS ABOUT

Just don't answer if the phone number is not familiar. Emails just delete n in time they will stop

I have tried calling the number listed above, to where there is no one who will answer my call, since I am already on the do not call list. Also, I have tried emailing complaints.donotcall.gov and donotcall.gov and both addresses come up as error - not valid addresses, even though a search on line and a recording on 1-888-382-1222 tells us to use those addresses. So what kind of help can you get? I've already tried to block the two numbers that call my phone every single day! This has been going on nearly a year!

I get a call from 8763540462 from Kingston, Surrey County, Jamaica. This is a spam. Where to report it?

The FTC Do Not Call Registry is a J-O-K-E, a federal "feel good" boondoggle. For my own experience, being on the list has not stemmed the influx of unwanted texts and calls I receive. The only effective measure I've found is to add the caller's number to my "Blocked Callers" list, and even that isn't 100% effective.

Just called to put in a complaint and after going through all the questions, they couldn't take my complaint because the number that I was calling about was not registered. What a scam.

So, recently starting about 2 or 3 days ago random numbers have been calling my home phone. The numbers are new everyday and never stay the same. Sometimes they show an actual number and other times it just says it's private name and number. My mother picked up the phone from them after the numerous times they called and she said there was silence and then a recording saying "goodbye". Other times when we have picked up it was only silence and not a recording. At times they call 5 times in the span of 30 minutes and then stop for a while and do it again later.
Another odd thing is that when I checked the call log the first time it showed various numbers calling me and not just one that was the same. About 10 minutes later, as well as another phone call from the number, I checked the call log again all the numbers have changed and about 10 in a row all showed the same number when it did not show that previously.
I did an online phone number lookup and I looked up the 3 numbers that were calling me the most. They all came back saying there was NO record of them even BEING numbers. Please help me find out what the problem is and what's happening!

I get calls about paying student loans never had. The calls come from different phone numbers every time my phone blocking is filling quickly. Who do i have hunt down to this to stop?

We didn't receive any telemarketer calls on our house phone until I registered it on the Do Not Call registry. Once registered on the DNC, it wasn't a week later and we started receiving calls from telemarketers. The DNC registry is a joke and does not work
