Spread the word about government imposters

We’re hearing from our colleagues that those pesky government imposters are at it again, using the FTC’s name to try to con people into paying them for something. Whether it’s to clean up your credit report, give you a prize, resolve a complaint against you, or pay off a debt you owe, they’re all lies. The message may be a call or an email, but it isn’t from the Federal Trade Commission, or any other federal agency.

Here’s the bottom line: if someone claiming to be a government employee asks you to send money to collect a prize or remove negative information from your credit report, don’t do it. And don’t give them your personal or financial information, either.two overlapping dialogue bubbles

As long as the scammers keep posing as government officials, we’ll keep putting out warnings like this one. But we need your help to spread the word. Talk to your friends. Tweet it. Post to your social networks. Blog about it. You just might help someone you care about avoid falling for a scam.

I got a call from 254-221-0361. Didn’t answer and they have left 3 messages so far today. It is a robotic voice not a person claiming they have investigated myself and my family and have tried reaching out to me for 6 months now and haven’t heard from me. I don’t know what they are talking about. They go on yo day that since this issue isn’t resolved they have determined it intentional fraud and that a law suit has been filed against me by the United States government. I blocked my number and called them back on mute and someone answered speaking another language and then hung up. I called back and the answered and hung up. This happened several times and then I just got a busy signal

Just got the same robo call msg. on my cell phone from 425-434-9318 a Seattle number. Message stated the government has been trying to contact me regarding fraud for the last 6 months. I have not responded so they are suing me for fraud. Message says I need to call them or they will be forced to seek criminsl action. Hmmmm really?

Same as many others. Here's voicemail transcription. Out of Mansfield, TX.

"Under your name and your tax ID for the tax fraud and the investigating ____ of our department is investigating you and your family we had tried to know the fight you regarding this issue in previous six months that we had never got a response from you so it has been considered as an intentional _____ and lawsuit has been filed under your ____ __ ___ United States government you may call our department number on 682426571 I repeat it 682-422-6571 thank you

well they are at it again - from seattle number - 206 316 8941 - saying I am wanted for tax evasion and fraud

I got the same call - 2/13/19 from 706-516-1763.

Same call from Landenberg, PA (484-372-0015)

Received a call from 281-292-9153 stating ignoring this is call is an intentional attempt to avoid intial appearance before a magistrate, a federal criminal offense. Kindly call us back at our number 1-281-747-1196. I don't think the courts will call.

I received the same call. The exact text is "Fraud and the investigating team of our department is investigating you and your family. We have tried to notify you regarding these issue in previous six months but we had never got response from you. So it has been considered as an intentional fraud and lawsuit has been filed under your name by the United States Government. " I am definitely going to call them and give them my credit card number, I don't need any problems from the US govt. Just kidding...

Just got a call from an Austin, TX number, 512-487-7287, and they left a voicemail. The voicemail said that "had never got a response from you so it has been considered as an intentional fraus and lawsuit has been filed under you r name by the United States government". Seems like the same scam as mention in other comments, and I wanted to document that it it still happening.

I received a call from someone claiming to be with the Dept of Justice and that Interpol has issues a citation for wiring money to Nigeria and threatening to expedite me to Nigeria to explain how I know the person I sent $950 to. It said this person is involved in money laundering and I can be fined a lot of money or even jail time. They said I needed to pay $4850 for an attorney to go to Nigeria to represent me. They gave me the name of where to send a down payment of $600 via Money Gram to Costa Rica and it was late on a Friday afternoon so I did it. Now they want me to make arrangements to pay the rest. They said they did a background check and no I dont have a criminal history at all and it should be dismissed. The court date in Nigeria is Feb 27th which is next week. I sent the money to a man I met online who said he was working in Nigeria and needed it. Now I'm concerned and wonder if Interpol would even do that and if the Dept of justice would even call me like this. They emailed me a copy of the Interpol citation and then emailed me a letter stating how much I still owe for thos attorney. My gut feeling makes me think its scam especially with this attorney being in Costa Rica and having to send a money gram. Can you please help me?

This sounds like a scam. Your story has several signs of a scam: you got an unexpected call, the person threatened you, and then demanded that you wire a large amount of money immediately to someone you don't know.

Scammers try to frighten people and make them act quickly before they can ask questions or check out a story. A person who really works for the US Department of Justice will tell you his or her name, and will have a government email address that ends in ".gov" with no letters after that. A real US Department of Justice employee should be able to verify his or her identity and work location, and send you email from the work address.

Had the same call on my voice mail this morning from the # 1-916-409-7686

Just found the same voicemail on my phone and am weary of these types of calls.
I never answer numbers I don't recognize and have had enough dealings with government agencies to know they don't work that way.
Who had the brilliant idea to allow telemarketers and scammers to have access to the cellular network anyways?
They were the reason I cancelled my landline years ago.

Yes i received a voice mail from 9033744129 saying that becauae they have not heard from me? first of i have no idea who this person was anyhow that because they had heard from me that presummed sone claim was fraudulent and willingly done therefore charges and lawsuit has been filled against me from rhe united. States government now what am i supposed to do.

Robo-call strikes again! Got a call from the number,
1-425-434-9484 about a case that I need to appear before a magistrate (?) and that I can contact a "tax-incline unit" or something of the sorts.

Upon looking up the phone number online, I found no sort of organization tied to the number so I figured that I'd post it here.
I hope it's a scam, I don't think that I'm under any sort of legal offences.

Just got TWO voicemails of the EXACT same robo calls, albeit from different numbers. The first was from 844.379.8619 and the second, about a hour later, from 202.839.8367.
They were exact same recording telling me they have tried to 'contact' me several times and have determined that I or my family have done something fraudulent and the government is filing charges against me.
Curious if anyone has actually any of these numbers to see what happens next?

Just received a call today which i didnt answer so they left a message saying they been trying to contact me because they're departement is investigating me and my family and since i havent answered its been considered as an intentional fraud and a lawsuit has been filed under my name by the United States Goverment and i need to call this number 800-381-1896, but they never said my name or which department they worked for on the message.

I just got a call saying Activities to get more information about this case file an arrest warrant from federal database call immediately at our headquarters number 281-612-9732 social security deputy officer is waiting for call back........

I got a voicemail having a robo voice asking to call back on 323525888 to speak to federal agent . These calls completely freak me out t.

Got a call from 403-671-4500 today at 12:49pm. Appeared to be a recording that said there was fraudulent activity on my account and to learn about the case file in the federal database I should press 1 to speak to their representative.
Did not press 1. Did block the number, however.

I received an voicemail telling me that needed to call 716-587-8525 for a case # 59-7342-8525 of a crime. Lisa Taylor reported that I needed to call to give information. Lisa Taylor did not identify herself.
Clear scam, the call identified as 916-273-3267? It was made to make me think it was coming from a local area code!

I got the same call from the same person/number. She has called multiple family members, work, has not identified any company, etc. Sounds like a call center in the back ground. Totally bogus!

I hot a call from this number and the woman was telling me I was being investigated and had all the information from the loan company that was going to have me arrested and talked to my ex husband's parents and knew information on my kids...I am concerned how she got all this info ....never said her name or company she was from

I received a call that was left on my voicemail stating that a warrant had been issue for by arrest for fraudulent activity on my social security number and a warrant was out for my arrest, call this number back, but when you call the number, it just ring and ring..they never say my name, just say a arrest warrant has been issue, from the federal database...I don't believe it....

I got this call today. “There is an enforcement action executed by the US hire authorities stating that __________________ going to be blocked intending your serious attention ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you to speak to an agent call back on 208-920-8483 I repeat 208-920-8483 thank you…” When you try to call it back it says call rejected.

“______ avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you to resolve this issue immediately and to speak to a federal agent call back number 925-291-7526 I repeat 925-291-7526 thank you…”

I received a call from someone claiming to be Patrick G Jasperse from the department of justice . They called and then hang up after two rings and they do this a couple of times a week . The number is 202-616-0509 I called it back and the voicemail it set up for Patrick G Jasperse but I think the scammer spoofed the number and voicemail . Anyone else receive a call from this number ?

Received a call on 5/29/2019 from phone number 833-338-2596. A real professional sounding message was left that if I didn't return the call I would have to appear before a Magistrate judge or a Grand Jury. I ignored the call.

robocall from phone number 833-360-4610 left voicemail stating "...ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense..." When called back person answering phone claims to be with the social security administration.

I just got a voicemail from a California # and they said that I committed an intentional fraud and a lawsuit has been filed under my name. Should I be concerned?

June 21 2019 I received a call from 1-877-421-3715 with the same message about me having a claim against me . On a recorded line

I got an automated call that left a partial voicemail stating “Stray judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you to resolve this issue immediately and to speak to a federal agent call back number 410-575-4530 I repeat 410-575-4530 thank you…” I have not called back the number as I am quite certain it’s a scam.

I received the same message with the same return phone number today.

I received a call from 432-294-5105 telling me to call 855-206-2686 when I called the number 432-294-5105 it was not a working number. The lady said her name was Gilvania Grillo and she was with a legal office and needed to get a location on me. And that a warrant had been issued for my arrest and they would be contacting my employer to get a location on me. I think these people are scammers. I get these calls all the time.

got two calls, one from a Washington number 202 763 and one from what was likely a spoofed PA number 484 429 8264 (Pa is where I live) claiming there was fraudulent activity on my SS # and if I wanted to resolve this immediately (immediately? yeah right if that was for real) I should press 1 to speak to an "agent" which I never did. The whole thing was a robocall with exactly the same message. The company claimed to be "Federal Database"

I received an automated Voice Message today from (202) 847-6295 stating that ignoring this message would be considered an initial attempt to avoid appearing before a magistrate judge or grand jury regarding a federal criminal offense in my name. They gave a case ID number. They then told me to call them back at that same number, which they claimed was for the " tax and crime unit". They said they could provide me with more case information and help me with my situation. I'm glad I googled the terminology they used in their message and found this page, because the phone number didn't pull up anything and was marked as being likely safe.

my wife and I both received the same call on June 24 and 25. Very unsettling to hear that.

I got the same one today about judge and jury it got so scary that when they got to the number I picked up the phone I got part of the number 289922 that is as far as I got they hung up I'm glad I didn't talk to them

Also received message from 661-745-7575. Do not respond. Definitely a scam...

Today my wife received threatening call about her Social Security had been compromised

The numbers I received calls from: 410-267-4269, 567-255-0000 and mentioned above. All of them are robotic voices who left voicemail. Please let me know how to get rid of these con artists.
Thanks, Shah Amanat

My husband recieved one of those calls today sounded like a recorded call stating there was a warrant issued for him through his social security number for fraudjalent charges. SCAM

Got a robot call this morning from California; said I am being sued by the federal government and a warrant has been issued for my arrest so call them. I called and the lady with an accent said her name is Cheryl Cooper and gave me a case number and a badge ID. She asked for my name and last four of my social. She then told me my ss card had been misused for criminal money laundering and drug trafficking. She said a car was rented under my name and they found $1 million and 50 kg of cocaine in it. She said they had been watching me for a long time and I had 25 open bank accounts. I pointed out that this didn’t seem right and how do I know it’s not a scam. She said, “We’re just a small part of the system so I don’t know anything else. If you want to fight this in court hire an attorney. If you want to resolve this, I can forward you to the federal marshals and they can fix it. We believe you didn’t commit these crimes, but only they can resolve this matter for you and they will need your full cooperation.” When I asked why haven’t they sent me certified mail or anything in writing, she said, “I’m sorry if you don’t believe me. Call your local authorities to confirm the warrant,” and hung up.

Received a murky message from "United States," stating that non-appearance could result in . . . The remainder of the message was cut off. The phone No. is: 469.598.4093.

‭+1 (404) 562-1182‬ Called me twice w recorded message warning of federal criminal offense from Social Security Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Weird.

I get them too and I am a retired attorney. The federal government never has and never will begin a criminal investigation with a robo call that leaves a message. Usually you will either be confronted in person by a federal agent with proper I’d. If called it will only be to come to an agency office for an interview, at which you are entitled to counsel.
