Spread the word about government imposters

We’re hearing from our colleagues that those pesky government imposters are at it again, using the FTC’s name to try to con people into paying them for something. Whether it’s to clean up your credit report, give you a prize, resolve a complaint against you, or pay off a debt you owe, they’re all lies. The message may be a call or an email, but it isn’t from the Federal Trade Commission, or any other federal agency.

Here’s the bottom line: if someone claiming to be a government employee asks you to send money to collect a prize or remove negative information from your credit report, don’t do it. And don’t give them your personal or financial information, either.two overlapping dialogue bubbles

As long as the scammers keep posing as government officials, we’ll keep putting out warnings like this one. But we need your help to spread the word. Talk to your friends. Tweet it. Post to your social networks. Blog about it. You just might help someone you care about avoid falling for a scam.

Same thing happened to me

I got the same call but mine went to voice mail. Before, I actually listen to the voice mail I called back and a guy answered. When I didn’t say anything back, he had hang up. I tried calling a bunch of times back and just kept ringing the whole time. The number was 682-214-8963.

This is extremely close to a message I got on 4/19/18!
I do not answer numbers I don’t know, so let it go to voicemail!
Message was basically.... “ *something* has been considered intentional fraud, and a lawsuit has been filed under my name (Which they didn’t know or say!) by the United States Government. I can call their department on 470-631-8744”! This is the exact number I received the call from, and it was clearly a bot!
I’m not a fool, so of course knew it was a scam! I know I have done nothing wrong and own no one money! But that doesn’t mean this scam won’t work on others, so I’m interested to know if there is someone I can report this to officially, to hopefully shut down these scam artists, before they ruin some innocent persons life?!

You can report this to the FTC at FTC.gov/Complaint. The information you give will go into a secure database that law enforcement uses for investigations. The comments you put here on the blog don’t go into the law enforcement database.

Thanks for providing information about how to file a complaint!

I just received the latest call, this time from area code 240, telling me that a lawsuit has been filed against me by the US Government. I didn't answer the phone since I didn't recognize the number, but I was instructed to call back immediately. I deleted the message without calling back. So they're still at it.

Like other posters, I received a call today from (844) 353-5033, stating

“Tensional fraud and lawsuit has been filed under your name by the United State Government. You may call our department number on 844-353-5033. I repeat its 844-353-5033. Thank you.”

It was a computer generated voice, and not a real person

I received the same call as FED-up! The voice message stated that a warrant had been issued for my arrest! They said they were the US Dept. of Treasury. The phone number was 405-285-3714 ,and they left a case number. This is pure BS! As everyone else has stated, I am SO EXTREMELY TIRED OF THIS CRAP!!!

On 6/22/2017 I got a call from this number (949)627-2376 they were telling me there from the IRS

Got a message on my office line saying the message was intentional second attempt call to avoid an appearance before a magistrate or grand jury in a federal criminal case but did not say who they were calling and they wanted me to call them to help them help me.
They caller had an Indian accent and left a 619-363-8135.
I know its a scam so please if anyone gets this kind of call hang up and do not even give them your first name.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE SCAMMERS USING THE FOLLOWING CALL BACK PHONE NUMBERS:

Received voice mail at my business claiming that I was being accused of tax fraud. Was totally suspicious and did not return call to 719-496-0055. Thanks for posting info on this scam.

I got a call yesterday, sound like a robot. The message was as followed:
The purpose of this call is regarding action executed by the U.S. Treasury Department regarding tax fraud against your name. Ignoring this would be an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense. Before you get arrested call us back at our number as soon as possible. The number to reach us is 315-203-1875

scam from 719-496-0055 acting like im in trouble for tax fraud

I offered them starbucks gift cards with zero balances they declined my offers. People dont be stupid.

Please shut them down! I just got the tax fraud call from the same number as others: 719-496-0055. Its so disturbing even though I know its a scam.

got a call from 646-998-0266 from the FBI with an arrest warrant if I didn't call back with the money for the department of tax and crime investigation in my name - its a female recording

I got a voicemail today saying if I don't call or have my eterny call back at that number that I would have legal consequences ....obviously they either have the wrong number or it's a scam ive gotten the same call twice today

+1 (202) 558-2010 A message (computer generated) was left. Said their was a warrant because of the IRS

I just got the message about an arrest warrant has been issued then when I call they say they are the IRS but hang up on me why I would get that message only to call to have them say they were the IRS. I thought the accent was more of an Afghanistan or Pakistani accent. He definitely hung up on me. My bro said never respond to those call as then I have shown my number is valid when I called back.

Is the FTC ever going to do anything to stop these people? I have literally gotten over 70 calls over the last 2 years. I have gotten to the point that I will never answer my phone again.

I keep getting a call from +18443693850 saying if you know the whereabouts of and my name. They are calling my number white man deep voice. Then it says we will have to move forward if you don't know his whereabouts.

Contact your phone provider. Ask if they charge for a service that blocks a particular phone number.

I just got this message today as well :This message is intended to contact you regarding an enforcement action executed by the us treasury intending you're serious attention ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to Avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense. This is the final attempt to reach you to resolve this issue immediately and to speak to a federal agent call back number that is 360-663-5624. I repeat the number that is 360-663-5624. Thank you.

I got the same bogus call.

When I returned to work following a vacation, there was a voicemail stating: "This is Officer Brenda Watkins from the Crime Investigation unit of the US Treasury. We have a warrant for your arrest. Please call us at 845-335-2788 with the name of your attorney of record. This is regarding Case ID# CH 76295. Do not ignore this call."
Thanks to everyone else who has posted their experiences !

Here's mine from an old google voice and phone number. It was sent to our email.

There is an arrest warrant issued against you and your physical property is under investigation due to tax evasion call us back immediately and speak to our attorney regarding the arrest warrant issued against you our call back number is 845-202-4866.

Cut and pasted the number and one site said 14 people looked it up on their reverse call number site 14 times within the hour. Red flag.

I hope by pasting this in, others can see that's a total scam.

08/23/17 After church this evening, I listened to a VM message left on my cell phone that conveyed this: Ignoring this call will be an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance in front of a magistrate judge or jury. This is a final attempt to reach you. To resolve this issue immediately and to speak w/a Federal Agent call us back at 765-233-9257

“___________ serious attention ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense this is the final attempt to reach you to resolve this issue immediately ______ speak to a federal agent call back number is 443-499-6659 I repeat 443-499-6659 thank you…”

I got a call like this from a Grand Island NY phone number. The message left said:

".... 21. Ignoring this message with be an additional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate, judge, or the grand jury for a federal criminal offense. My number is 716-775-2085. I repeated 716-775-2085. Do not disregard this message, and do return the call. Now, if you don't return the call, and I don't hear from your attorney either, then the only thing I can do is; wish you a good luck as the situation unfolds on you. Goodbye. "

This was transcribed exactly as it was recorded, weird grammar and all, i.e "wish you a good luck". What language/country phrases it like that?

I had exactly the same thing, word for word, including incorrect grammar! Crazy!!

I had exactly the same thing, word for word, including incorrect grammar! Crazy!!

I was hiring for a nanny and was expecting calls from numbers I didn't know. I got a missed call and called back immediately and clearly gave the scammers the knowledge that I was a real person. They have called back multiple times from multiple #s with the same intimidating Robo message about the US treasury seeking legal action against me and to have me or my attorney of record to call back immediately. It was scary to think I had made a mistake on my taxes or something. Now reading through these responses I will report the # and be prepared for their fake escalations.

I've been getting calls like these for the past month I've blocked each number that has tried to reach me, but they still keep calling leaving an automated voice message when I don't answer, its all choppy and I know its a scam. I just want them to stop callimg me.

I got the same just today....from an 855-873 number, said his name was Robert Mason (maybe Habib Mason, not to be politically incorrect). VERY forceful, very insistent that I take care of it immediately. He told me there were '7 miscalculations on my income tax returns from 2010-2015, and that I owe the IRS $3,800 and some odd dollars. When I asked for his supervisor, there just happened to be none available, 'and none would be available until after my case was 'advanced' (wth 'advanced' means, I have NO idea...lol)'. I was told not to ask questions or interrupt as I wouldn't understand what he was about, going to 'explain' to me, and he 'wouldn't repeat' what he was saying. When I interrupted him to ask him to repeat what he had just said (I love playing with these people!), he advised me if I interrupted again, I'd be considered as someone not wishing to cooperate, and he would have the police at my door 'in an hour', and they would hold me for 3 days if I didn't cooperate. He asked if I'd be willing to pay it right then and there, during that call, he was given authority to only charge me 75% of 'my debt to the federal gov't'. I really really wish there was SOME way of getting rid of these scumbags, but until there is, just always remember that NOONE will call and lave a message straight-out telling you that you owe money and are subject to arrest, ESPECIALLY Uncle Sam....as one poster (most likely more) has said, the federal govt always handles issues like that through the mail. ALWAYS BE CAUTIOUS AND NEVER GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFO TO ANYONE!!

I received this voicemail from a 'Washington D.C.' phone number so it looks/sounds official:

You have received a new voice message
From: +12022390306 @ t-mobilevoicemail. com
Date: Wed 9/20/2017 10:31 AM
Length: 36 seconds
Action executed by the US treasury intending your serious attention. Ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense. This is a final attempt to reach you to resolve this issue immediately and to speak to a federal agent or call us back on 202-239-0306. I repeat 202-239-0306. Thank you.

same deal, the phone number the recording told me to call was 929-388-0112 which is also the same number from the Caller ID display.

I received a call from a Rod about the government filing a law suit against me and to call 3254804620 to find the case number back. Dies this seem real?

I just got a call from an automated system that claimed to be calling from the irs and said my whole family is being investigated and since I haven’t responded in the past 6 months it’s now intential fraud and I’m being sued by the United States government. But I never received any mail or calls from the irs.

I recieved same message March 26th 2018---family under investigation by the United States Govt- And that I hadn't responded in 6 months and it sounded like an automated message not sure kinda choppy
sound. Female voice and said if I didnt call they would
send it to court. Phone # was 904-782-7092 I called it and phone # wouldn't connect. Govt phone numbers always work.

I just received this voicemail “Sensitive and urgent as after August we found that there was a fraud in misconduct on your tax filing which you are hiding from the federal government this needs to be rectified immediately so do return the call on our direct line number the number is 360-967-5441 again 360-967-5441 thank you…”

I have recieved multiple robo calls about a criminal federal offense and if there is not a returned call I would be going in front of a federal magistrate. The call also days if I do not hear from you, all I can say to you is good luck. These people are such losers. The same call amd recorded voice from multiple different phone numbers and area codes.

Phone number 410-216-5259 called twice in one day, left partial messages in obvious automated voices (one male, one female) saying myself and my family were being investigated and they had attempted to reach me for six months and since I hadn't responded, they were filing charges of intentional fraud with the U.S. Government. I've found the same number on several "who called me" type websites with people saying the same thing, also that this number a few months ago was calling to help lower credit card interest rates. I just wanted to be able to report it somewhere...

I got the same automated call and I called them back (716) 707-3318. They read off the same case number CF79621, From a Robert Matthew Badge #1189. Said I owed Back taxes and the threats that if I hang up they will sent the local police to arrest me using my phones last location. He tried to corner me with the same question "What option will you take?" and I kept saying to him, you didn't give me any options. He kept going in circle until I asked, so are you saying that I should pay what you say I owe? that's when he said that he could connect me with the lead investigator who may give me an opportunity to avoid 1 1/2 years in prison with no bail.
Ironically, 15 minutes after he hangs up on me because he said I wasn't taking it seriously, out of the blue, I get a 3 texts from the Tax Defense Network((904) 204-0546), saying they have been unable to reach me and I should call (844)335-3550 or (844) 335-3640 to "win my life back".

They don't give you a chance to breath between the wave after wave of threats that the police and marshal will be on there way to arrest you. They are horrible people.

Received 2 calls this morning saying someone in family has committed fraud and they have been trying to reach me for 6 months and now they are sending it on to court

Just got this
“______ to you by the ______ ___ ___ _____ so before the _____ __ going to worst against you kindly call us back at 571-402-8567 I repeat it's 571-402-8567 disregard this message and do return the call __ ___ ____ ___ calling us back might end up into a legal prosecution against your name so we hope that you justify in this situation as soon as possible thank you…”
