Did you attend DeVry? Don’t pay for loan forgiveness

Are you a former student of DeVry University — or of any other college — who’s heard from a company that’s promising to get your loans forgiven after you pay them a fee?

We have an important piece of advice: don’t do it. It’s never a good idea to pay an up-front fee for the promise of debt relief. Once you pay, you might not get anything in return. And you might be paying for something you can do yourself for free.

The FTC has been hearing about pitches like these after recently filing a complaint in federal court against DeVry, one of the largest educational services companies in the nation, for misrepresenting the prospects of their graduates to get well-paid jobs in their fields.

So what can you do if you think you might be a candidate for loan forgiveness or are looking for other help with your student loans?

  • If you’ve got federal loans, go to the Department of Education’s StudentAid.gov to find out more about applying for forgiveness and cancellation, or other programs like income-driven repayment plans. Information about one kind of loan forgiveness, known as a borrower defense discharge, is available here.  Applying for any of these programs is free.

The FTC filed the lawsuit against DeVry in January. There haven't been any announcements since then. This page will show any announcments about the case.

And i was told they had a 80 something % placement rate in my field of study no later then 6 months after graduating. been 5 years no contact at all that's a big 0%
Devry is a big rip off !!!

I AGREE! MAJOR rip off! The courses DO NOT prepare you unless you work side by side to gain experience to compensate the degree because the degree is looked upon as a joke and just merely "bought". I'm hoping we can get half deducted if not more so we can go back to an accredited school and make up for this bs of a degree! -pissed off "consumer"

DeVry was always pushing me to take mire classes than I can afford. I would tell them I can only do one class a session but they did not listen. No More DeVry

I was offered a grant thru EITC program for low income/poverty called Once in a Lifetime. DeVry claimed EITC never paid it. DeVry fought me for a few months after I was enrolled with them. The EITC kept insisting they paid them the grant of $4,000 dollars.

I was also told I would receive money back for financial aid grants thru Pell and Stafford grants. She said I'd have left over money that would go into my bank account, which never happened during the 2 years of attending DeVry

The agreement was that I would be safe with federal loan with Sallie Mae and was assured I wouldn't have to pay it back until six months after graduation or being out of school for an extended time.

DeVry even had the nerve to put a instructor in that admitted, they couldn't find a teacher to fill the position. She didn't know how to code artificial intelligence and I ended up teaching myself. She passed everyone just to save face. She told me, I should sell my final project, because it was professional level. The point is, she was teaching out of a book not from experience. (Which DeVry ensures their instructors have).

About two years down the line I asked about the monies left over from the grant that was suppose to go to my account. That's when their attitudes completely changed. They told me, I had to pay my tuition or I couldn't continue my courses, also threatened to take away my DoD security clearance away (Which they did).

I also applied for the G.I. Bill which was denied, with the reason being G.E.D. Which also doesn't make sense. My loans defaulted, about 4-6 years ago, I never received any calls, emails or letters in the mail. The accounts were sold off to collectors under charge off and were listed as closed. I recently looked at my credit report and the accounts are now listed as opened. The credit report reads, I'm missing payments with the federal loans. Once again I never received any information about the loans. I plan on going back to school this year and don't know how this is going to affect me.

The US Department of Education has a Federal Student Aid website.

The website has information about repaying your loan, and about the consequences of default. Check the Federal Student Aid website for ideas about what to do.

Were you able to find stable employment with your degree?

Are there any examples on claims that were submitted successfully to FSAOperation as explained on the studentaid.gov website? Specifically I'm looking at the discharge process laid out here:studentaid.ed.gov borrower-defense

I want to make sure I have all the required documentation, but I'd like to see some examples of what to place in the section that says: "Any details about the conduct of the school that the borrower believes violated state law" I attended DeVry in Washington statue until 2010 and want to make sure I have all my facts straight before applying for loan discharge. Does anybody know of any related resources that give good examples of what to list here for DeVry specifically? I don't want to just voice my opinion on what I think they did wrong, as I don't know how well that will hold up. Thanks in advance.

The Federal Student Aid website says that if you have questions about borrower defense, you may call the borrower defense hotline (855) 279-6207. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. Or, you can send an e-mail to FSAOperations@ed.gov.

Im looking for examples as well.

good information

I had loans from Devry between 2006 and 2008 and many of the same issues I experienced. This format I don't want to go into detail. Now I had loans from other schools as well in 2013 I consolidated all of my loans Devry with non Devry into one new loan. If its found that I am eligible for some reimbursement do they look at the old loans and adjust the amounts based on that and knock off what I owe in loans based on those amounts? They would have to include all the interest piled up as I have not been able to make payments due to an incoherent job market. Many employers have criticized Devry's standing that it makes it difficult to get positions in the Accounting field if a Devry Degree is present. So lots of interest has resulted from these loans. Again how does it work because the original Devry loans were paid off through consolidation with other loans where i am in Income Based Repayment already.

The FTC filed suit against DeVry in January 2016. The FTC says that DeVry’s ads deceived people about the likelihood of getting jobs in their field of study, and that they'd earn more than people who got bachelor's degrees from other colleges or universities. The lawsuit has not ended.

How can I participate in this suit with the FTC? During 2009 - 2013. I attended DeVry, a lot of these comments are true. I have the same debt issue, due to false pretenses and my credits are insignificant at other colleges or universities due to their horrible reputation.

The FTC's lawsuit is still going on. When it filed the lawsuit, the FTC asked the court to give financial help to consumers and ban DeVry from violating the FTC act. You can file a complaint with the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint and explain what happened to you.

I too have had a major problem with DeVry, I had $4,000 accrediated to my account ans then it was taken off. I had to drop out of school. I want to finish but cannot pay the $4,000 of which I do not owe.

Mam I commented about 2 months ago. I filed an official discharge of loans paperwork for discharge of my Devry share of the loans. They did tell me if my case was successful that the Devry portion of my students loans and interest on it would be expunged or discharged and interest and everything as well as balance would be readjusted without Devry in its calculations and that any consolidations of IBR would stay.

The issue though is not that as I had asked before its how they want to proceed. They have set the burden of proof as such that any State Laws were violated and from my reading of Texas law literally no NOT PROFIT (pardon the double negative) is eligible to give student loans in the first place.

That is what is tricky and completely different than what yall at the FTC are doing. Texas is a state that is friendly to big business which is why I believe that they are not doing anything about Devry. Mrs. Small I wanted your take on this matter because the bulk of my complaint actually had Texas Law as the basis for my discharge. Basically it said that a University must be registered as either a non profit private or non profit public University or at least have connection with the State Board of Public Educators in Texas. So that would mean that Walden University would get lucky there but other than that the code was clear about things I can send you my official complaint and the copy of the discharge page and you can review this and let me know. Thanks, Mrs. Small if you are counsel I would love your opinion.

Thank you for your comment. If I understand your comment correctly, you have requested a discharge of federal student loans, which is handled by the US Department of Education. In certain situations, you can have your federal student loan forgiven, canceled, or discharged. In some situations, students who attended a school and believe they were defrauded, or believe that their school otherwise violated applicable state law may be eligible for discharge (loan forgiveness) of federal loans.

Is there a way to get updated information on the status of the law suit? I got a technical management degree from Devry that turned out to be worth nothing, I am not making any money from that degree and have not been able to get a job. When I registered I specifically said I wanted to get a major on accounting and was told my degree plan would be designed for that. I did take many accounting classes, however my diploma does not show accounting anywhere and when I called the school was told just show the transcript and any employer will see you took accounting. I have felt robbed for years and hope Devry goes down, and I get my money back, maybe then can get a real degree

Here is the press release announcing the FTC's case. This case page lists the activity in the case.

I graduated with my Bachelor's in 2006 and still at the same job that I was in when I achieved my degree. I was promised job interviews, a high paying job within 6 months of graduating, etc but I'm still where I am. The degree absolutely got me nowhere and I have sent it out to plenty of companies but I was promised that DeVry would help me. I believed in them and was hoping that if I worked hard at achieving my degree, which I did that they would do their part and help me land a great job. I have somehow racked up over $60,000 in loans but only attended 2 years there because my 2 year community college academics transferred over. I feel duped and definitely robbed. I am a single mom and cannot afford these outrageous student loans. Any suggestions on what to do?

I went to Devry back in 1972. I was promised the world but the school was so expensive, even with student loans, I was unable to finish. I have student loans with interest of 8.5%, I have never used any of the education I received at Devry and never been able to get a job using it. What can I do?

Hello, Please help me. I went to both Itt tech and DeVry to become to have a better quality of life. I went to DeVry/Keller with a promise that I would land a great job.I graduated in Devry in Technical Management in 2008 and Keller in 2010. No one would take my degrees seriously and never been able to find jobs in my field. Later, I became homeless. I cannot afford my loans and need help. I took a chance and sacrifice my time as well lost relationships. Where do I go to be apart of the lawsuit? And where do I need to go to get more information for my case?

The US Department of Education has information for ITT students: If you are currently or were recently enrolled at ITT, you may be eligible to have your federal student loans for your program at ITT discharged. Your federal loan debt will be wiped away and you will have the option of restarting your education somewhere new. Department of Education will post and update information about how to receive a discharge at Department of Education's ITT announcements page.

In 2007, I was solicited by a DeVry rep to pursue a degree at DeVry. At the time, I was already working in IT as a tech support person. I went to DeVry, graduated in 2011 with a bachelor degree in Computer Information - Information Security. Today, I am still in tech support making around the same amount of money. I have $64K in debt. It is 2016 and I still have not benefited from the degree.

When I was about 4 classes away from graduating, my financial aid counselor told me I had ran out of money to use and told me they had a special program to help me get my last classes. I was told to apply for a private loan even though I knew I would be denied. Then I could apply for a DeVry loan. This was a special loan which I thought was through the school but serviced by ECSI. I lost my job soon after I got it. The payments were due right away. When I lost my job and tried to tell the school I was unemployed they said call ECSI. When I called ECSI they said call the school. It went back and forth for 5 years. I filed for ch.13 bankruptcy thinking payments could be made through that. ECSI responded to the complaint saying it was a school loan. When I called they told me it was a personal loan. To this day I am not sure what kind of loan it is. All I know it is not federal and I believe I was deceived in getting this loan. FTC needs to investigate how many other people have been deceived with the DeVry Loan.

My Future counts on this case. My worthless Degree that I got tricked into. Half way through I realized this could be a bad deal/future of misery. Now here I am. This case will determine years and years of my future. Devry Scams and will continue to do so, money hungry business that puts students last. God please help us and give us a second chance.

Master in accounting. The student adviser told me that because I was study in a foreign country I needed to pass an English test, mandatory to begin the master. I failed the test two times. They told me that it was no so mandatory. When I finished my master I found that not all the classes where approved by the State Accountancy Board to take the CPA exam. Since the first day, they told me that the master was a direct path to sit for the CPA exam. They lied to me.

DO NOT waste your time going to this school, its a waste of time and money. They will rip you off, lie to you and willingly walk you into a pile of debt for a useless degree from a useless school. Fill out the forms discussed on this page. The government doesn't file lawsuits unless they have a good reason / a lot of evidence. Devry is going to lose, I have no doubt about that. Our government has our back on this, I trust that they will do their best to make things right. Hopefully Devry will be shut down so no one else has to incur a ton of debt for a degree that isn't worth the paper its printed on. I took that useless degree off of my resume, I suggest you do the same as it will do more harm than good at this point.

Hello, where can I get updates on the government case against devry?

Hello, i am going to be done with devry next year in march. I have been hearing about loan forgivness but i paid out of pocket after every session ended. Can i place a motion in court for the false claims? I started school in 2013 and they still claimed they could help place people, and even had a list of employers they are "hooked up" with on a wall.

If you're thinking of filing a case, you could talk with a lawyer.

To find a lawyer, you could use this state-by-state list from the American Bar Association or visit this site from the State Bar Associations.

I went to devry from 2009-2011 currently in debt for 30k my last year there I got pulled out of a final because there was something wrong with my transcripts aperently they said I wasn't making enough progress to remain a student. They kept me In there office for an hour to fill out some paperwork when they finally had my transcripts I looked at them to my surprise all the courses I had paid for had no grades on them . They apologized for there mistake but because of this I wound up failing the class cause the teacher wouldn't let me take the test again. I live in ny where it's pretty expensive to live and haven't been able to pay back my loans. Even with the income based payments it's to damn expensive what are my options at this junkture

Talk with your lender or loan servicer about repayment options.

Hi, how is it possible to apply for the Borrow Defense to Repayment plan if the Devry case hasn't settled yet?

Under the law, you may be eligible for a borrower defense to repayment discharge of the federal Direct Loans you took out to attend a school if that school committed fraud by doing something or failing to do something, misrepresented its services, or otherwise violated applicable state law related to your loans or the educational services you paid for.

The law requires borrowers to submit a claim in order to receive debt relief.

The US Department of Education has information about what is required for eligibility for a borrower defense to repayment.

I graduated from Devry in 2007 in EET field. Shortly found a full-time job and begin to pay my student loans back. Then I was laid off in 2011 and decided to go for my NISM and graduated in 2014, since then everything has been a down hill for me. I was able to get 1 short term project, but the compensation wasn't fair. I lost my home, phone, and car. Currently, living with family with numeruous email from fedloan. I really don't know what to do anymore beside actively seeking for full time job (id also tried applying for other position that is non related to my background, but will get declined for the skills). I'm lost, and hope these loans can keep there mouth close for awhile.

Mark: I attended Devry university 3 years for undergraduate degree. After I graduated. Their false information let me go for master degree in accounting and finance. I earned master degree in 2012. Guess what im still driving Limousine. These degrees didn't change my life. I didn't even get single professional job. I owe 76k student loans. My friends laugh on my master degree. Devry screw my life. My family not happy. Even my friends asked me when i will get good job. I says one day i will. Utvi know i will never get job bc of devry reputation

I attended Keller and enrolled in an IBR program to consolidate my loans via a third party-TSFC/Student Assist Plus-I didn't realize that it was a scam until this year when I enrolled in the IBR program directly through FedLoan. I called to cancel my services with TSFC/Student Assist Plus, but was given a very difficult time and told that they provided special services apart from Fed Loan and I would lose these services. I want to just cancel their service. Is there any way or specific key words I should say to terminate their service? Please advise

A company might make it hard for you to quit, but you still have a right to quit. You have to see if there is a contract or agreement between you and the company, and what the contract or agreement says. Look on the website of the third party company and see what it says about terminating their service.

Well, I attended Devry from 2008-2012, 4.0 student all 4 years, listened to Devry everytime I registered classes and financial aid, took only what they said to, and had to withdrawl because they lied about their financial aid practices, promising I would graduate on time, finding out they lied, ran out of aid, and was in my senior year, only a few courses left to graduate and can't finish!

I would LOVE to file for borrow defense, but unfort. the online process is not on the gov. website yet.

So I went to Devry from 2009-2011 and was told that I could get a Bachelors degree in Business in a two and a half year period. I was advised on how many classes to take and which ones I needed for the degree. When I got two years into it and still wasn't even halfway close to being done and realized just how much student loan debt I had acquired in two years since they are so expensive, I decided that it was time for me to quit. I didn't get to finish my degree and I didn't get the job placement they promised at that time since I didn't graduate. I am trying to figure out what I can do to get involved with the DeVry law Suite so I don't have to pay back those student loans at least.

Make a compliant with FTC, everyone on this site should. If you don't then US Dept of Ed will not forgive the student loans.

I graduated from DeVry in June 2014, please tell me how I can apply for possible loan forgiveness due to the complaint filed by the FTC. I have an associates and did not get the Job placement they promised and i have extreme student loan debt.

When or has this FTC complaint been adjudicated and has an award amount been levied?

The FTC filed the case in January 2016. The case has not been resolved. The case page has additional information.

i had called devry about the loan forgiveness that was mandated by the department of education and they said they would transfer me to the department that can help me (without telling me it was actually a seperate debt consolidation company) later i find out the "department" they transferred me to is actually a debt consolidation company called alumni aid assistance and that i only supposedly qualified to have about $1200 removed from my loan and i had to pay back the rest. just so everyone is aware do NOT call devry they will try to do this to you, submit the forgiveness claim to the studentaid.gov site directly. this "consolidation" also requires an upfront payment that varies depending on how much your loan is and how much they say you "qualify" for with my small (relatively) loan of less than 6K that amounted to almost $400 upfront.
