Did you attend DeVry? Don’t pay for loan forgiveness

Are you a former student of DeVry University — or of any other college — who’s heard from a company that’s promising to get your loans forgiven after you pay them a fee?

We have an important piece of advice: don’t do it. It’s never a good idea to pay an up-front fee for the promise of debt relief. Once you pay, you might not get anything in return. And you might be paying for something you can do yourself for free.

The FTC has been hearing about pitches like these after recently filing a complaint in federal court against DeVry, one of the largest educational services companies in the nation, for misrepresenting the prospects of their graduates to get well-paid jobs in their fields.

So what can you do if you think you might be a candidate for loan forgiveness or are looking for other help with your student loans?

  • If you’ve got federal loans, go to the Department of Education’s StudentAid.gov to find out more about applying for forgiveness and cancellation, or other programs like income-driven repayment plans. Information about one kind of loan forgiveness, known as a borrower defense discharge, is available here.  Applying for any of these programs is free.
  • If you’ve got private loans, try contacting your loan servicer directly to see what options you might have.

Sametbing happened to me but I went but I graduated in 1999. Can I still qualify? I even remember the slogan they had on their commercials. DEVRY WE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT SUCCESS. and also indicated that their graduates get placed in a job within 6 months.

This settlement may provide partial refunds only to people who paid DeVry for classes between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015, and students who owe private loans and debts to DeVry.

I have over $13,000 in Institutional Loans from Devry of which I have paid over $4000-mostly in interest. What % if any do we get back from the settlement? Do we get back interest that we paid, or just the amount that went straight to the loan only? I have already worked out a plan for my FED Loans with the DOE.

The settlement requires DeVry to forgive and cancel the entire unpaid balance of all institutional student loans that DeVry issued to DeVry University undergraduate students between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015. The forgiveness includes principal and interest.

I attended Devry/Keller and I applied for several jobs through there site. I never once got a call. I ways told that Devry was well respected and that I would be definitely get job placement. Needless to say I had to fend for myself. I owe more than 130k and the salary I'm making now is not even half of that but I am expected to pay 1000 per month. I work with people in my field who have not stepped foot in school and are making more than I. This in my opinion is an unacceptable business practice.

So, looking at the FTC website in regard to this...The FTC doesn't plan to start the reviews of eligible students for the forgiveness until 2017. They will be reviewing Devry's records directly and according to the website, there is nothing anyone has to specifically do - EXCEPT having paid for classes between Sept 1, 2008 and Sept 30, 2015.

I attended between 2010 and graduated in 2014 and have over 100k in loans. I received ZERO help from Devry in getting a job and have had problems with repaying loans to Sallie Mae private student loans. I am DEFINITELY NOT earning what they advertised I would be making. Based on Devry's "promises" I should be making at least 25k more per year.

I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out and I am contacting the FTC about this despite them saying the process is going to be "automatic" starting in 2017.

The settlement requires DeVry University to forgive and cancel the entire unpaid balance of all private student loans issued by DeVry University between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015. The settlement also requires DeVry to cancel $20.25 million in debts owed to DeVry University by eligible students for things such as tuition, books and lab fees. DeVry University will send an email and letter to affected students within 30 days after the judgment is entered

They really need to go back further. My husband and my self both went here and owe almost 70,000. He never has worked in his field of study. We were there from 2002 to 2005 and those ads were running even back than.

I totally agree, Devry kept jacking up the rates every year and made it impossible to graduate on time because classes werent available or conflicted with other classes. I couldnt finish school cause my loans got maxed out.

I started going to Devry in 2006 and graduated in 2009. I had no previous student loans taken out for any other school. The first red flag was that after one semester I was told that I didn't have enough money and couldn't come back until the amount due was paid. How?! I had no previous loans. This was just an Associates degree. This happened a couple of times and I stayed out for a while until I got a credit card to pay the amount. I don't remember how much it was. I believe I owe in total over $60,000 now. I got a job in my field, but it was only because of someone I knew.

Fast forward to 2015 and I'm in a different school and attempted to get my transcripts from devry and guess what. They would settle my account for $1368, a 40% discount. I paid because the amount of student loan funds I was left with from devry was very little and I was trying to finish this other school quickly so I wouldn't have to pay out of pocket. Will I be getting any money back? I'm

I attended DeVry from approx 06 (08?) to 2012. I just received an email saying that due to the FTC lawsuit, my loan thru them was completely forgiven and I owe nothing. My question is since this ahs happened, can I use the "borrower defense" to try and be forgiven of all or part of my federal loans due to the misleading claims made by them?

Addendum to my original post

I haven't graduated yet because I got behind on their loan and due to the high expense of attending that school (that was the only program in my field of study available in the state at the time)I ran out my federal loans! I couldn't afford to pay out of pocket so I was not able to even finish. With all this new information , I would like to try and finish at another school, but I don't believe my grades will transfer, what can I do? HELP

I attend DeVry since 2013 and graduated last June. I am actually paying my Subsidized Loans and set up a payment plan according to my income as customer service representative. Do I need to complete the "borrower defense to Repayment" or should I wait to receive any correspondence by mail? am confused.

Called Wells Fargo yesterday and they have not heard of anything in regards to DeVry forgiveness loans. Called my gov loans (Nelnet) and they were just as confused as Wells Fargo. This whole thing just sounds like a scam/April fools joke for people in tens of thousands of dollars is student loan debt. The info is not clear and if you call DeVry's 1-800 number they have no info to give out. They are just as confused as myself/Wells/Nelnet. Seems like nothing has changed since attending DeVry in 2008 when they ripped me off of my post-college scholarship.

This is not a scam or joke. Please read the most recent blog post and press release from December 2016.  There are a lot of comments and information on the most recent blog post.

DeVry is able to forgive only the loans that it directly originated. It does not have the ability to cancel loans that it didn't originate. If you have loans with other lenders, DeVry can't forgive those loans.

I Graduated from DeVry university and was promised quick job placement with most students receiving a job in less than six months. Well guess What I graduated in February of 2015 and here it is 2017 still no good paying job and $45k in the hole student loans with no relief in sight. How has DeVry gotten away with this for so long. I wish I would have know this in the beginning I would have never enrolled at DeVry University what a waste of money that I will never be able to pay back.

I attended Devry from Oct 2008 through Oct 2011. Would I be considered for a full or partial refund if my loans are now with Navient? Devry did not help me get a job in the field I graduated in. I am currently still working the same job with the same pay I had before I started with Devry except I have 50k in student loan debt.

Graduated 2007 from Devry University, Long Beach, CA

Under the recent FTC fight against Devry University I see that under who is eligible for refund the FTC listed students who attended Devry from:

[You may be eligible if you paid for DeVry classes between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015.]

With that said what about those of us who attended Devry between January 1, 2004 - 2007 or so on and so fourth, what happens to those individuals? Do we get any kind of incentives or loan forgiveness because the same tactics were used to bait new students in and claims of guaranteed jobs and such. Please let us know... I can honestly say that jobs don't really care about degrees if you know someone...

I received two Master's degrees from Keller Graduate School of Management (DeVry University's Graduate School) between 2009 and 2012. Will this judgement help those of us who attended at the Graduate level?

If I got a job and struggled to pay off the loans do I still get anything. I chose to skip vacations, a new car and eating out to pay my loans.
My problem now is I am not doing anything with long term growth and employers question what I learned at DeVry.

I have not received any info. I attended Devry from 11/12 - 7/14 and graduated. The time frame I stated is within the guidelines. Jan 17th I contacted Devry because they said all accounts should be updated by Jan 18th. Called next day and they told me zip didn't qualify because my loans weren't Federal. This again isn't true because I pulled it up on myDevry site and have pdf of my billing and all loans are Federal Loans. This is becoming a witch hunt to get my debt resolved and I'd like to know who and where I can contact to get clarification because somebody is dropping the ball. At least a letter can arrive indicating why I wouldn't qualify if that is the Case. Please provide assistance on my next step or are their more loop holes. I'm thinking that many people are being left out with hopes they don't know or may forget.

Under the FTC's settlement with DeVry University, DeVry must:

  • forgive and cancel the entire unpaid balance of all private student loans issued by DeVry University between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015.
  • cancel $20.25 million in debts owed to DeVry University by eligible students for things such as tuition, books and lab fees.

If you have federal loans, DeVry will not forgive or cancel those loans.

However, the settlement also includes $49.4 million that the FTC will use to provide partial refunds to people who paid DeVry for classes. You may be eligible for a partial refund if you paid DeVry for classes between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015. The FTC will use DeVry's records to identify people who are eligible for a refund and contact them with information about the refund program.

Pleaae advise- I went to DeVry from 2006 to 2009 graduated, and I went back for Master degree from Keller graduate School of Managment..I graduated in 2010..I worked really hard and worked underpaid and with non college degree jobs to pay for my students loans. When I was finshing Keller I had 30 k to pay off, and thats because I tried my best to put every penny I earned towars the tuition. In 2011 I took HELOC under my house and I paid off my students loans as the intrest rate was lower. I still have HELOC that is only for my student loan. Is there any way I also can get refund, as I went to Devry and Keller on false promises, and I could only find accounting entry job as most of the employers dont want to hire Devry students

The settlement covers only DeVry students. It doesn't cover Keller students.

Doesnt cover Keller???? Keller is DEVRY, what kind of nonsense is this?

How do you find out if you name is on the list.

I attended DeVry for telecom management, had to take a break from school for a couple terms and when I went back, they had ended that degree program so all the classes I had paid for were now worthless toward a degree. They did this to me twice. I now owe $70k and don't even have an associates degree. Can anything be done about this?

DeVry agreed to a $100 million settlement of charges the FTC brought related to DeVry's advertising. This blog tells more about the settlement. Read about FTC’s DeVry redress program at FTC.gov/DeVry.

I attended DeVry and I still have the emails when I began the process of attending, but I would like to speak with someone (an attorney) about whether it is something that would be able to be discharged. What would I look for in regards to an attorney to help me with this? I'm not sure that I would be able to pay a bit amount of money up front, though, is the issue, so hopefully there is someone who could help with advising me. Any help would be awesome. Thank you.

Hello Bridget, You indicated the at FTC will provide partial refunds to students that attended DeVry during the periods of 2008-2015. Have you all begin contacting people? How will contact individuals? Is there a way students can find out of they qualify for the refund?

For information about FTC’s DeVry redress program, visit FTC.gov/DeVry. You may be eligible for a partial refund if you paid for DeVry classes between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015.

As of March 24, 2017 the FTC has not contacted people. To stay informed, you can bookmark ftc.gov/devry and check back regularly, or sign up for e-mail updates about the DeVry refund program.

When will the FTC make DeVry pay back students loans for this false advertisement? I went to this school because of that 90 percent garbage and all i have to show for it is dang near 70 thousand dollars in debt...

I attended Devry 2003 and i was promised a job after i graduate. I graduated in 2007, and it was very hard for me to get a job. I have a job but work as an immediate clerk at an adult school. I have my bachelor in Business and yet to find a great job. Can i apply for loan forgiveness of my loan or cancellation?

I applied to DeVry in 2006, in what was supposed to be a Computer Engineering program. It wasn't until late in the process that I was told they had not yet actually started that program, and to take the first year in the Electrical Engineering program, as they were "essentially the same" for the first few courses. A year and a half later, and they still did not have a Computer Engineering program, and I had experienced numerous issues with the school, including several weeks where the campus labs were all but unusable due to network and/or computer issues (including a virus that took far too long for them to resolve). Professors for online classes were all but impossible to contact, leaving questions unanswered and homework ungraded.

At my wits end, I transferred to a local community college... only to find out that the bulk of my credits were worthless, and most of the ones that did transfer were only usable as "general elective" credits.

The problem is, I attended between mid 2006 and the end of 2007... and all of these loans were private loans through Sallie Mae (now Navient) - that borrower has been less than helpful. For a while, when I was in tough financial straights, they were charging me $50 per loan sequence ($100 total) to put them on forbearance for a month, telling me I could only do a month at a time... I later found out that was entirely false. Their practices have seen my student loan debt grow to incredible proportions as I worked my way through a reputable school...

Am I simply out of luck here? Is there any hope that a Defense Against Repayment would be successful?

The FTC refund process applies only to people who were students between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015. If you have federal loans, go to the Department of Education’s StudentAid.gov to read about applying for forgiveness and cancellation.

Devry is a spam and have poor education they just want money. They also kept my grants and that it was recommended to turn them in for you to get another class. They mislead/distorted and gave false impression. I was amazed when I investigated Devry University about there bullying towards each class session amount charge. Can I get my Loan Discharge?

Back in the 1990s, all I heard on TV was DeVry guaranteed career placement after completing a degree in your field. Living the American Dream after pursuing my degree and guaranteed job placement after completion was the beginning. I was excited until toward the end of my program. I graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems. An internship and assigned a Career Advisor was the beginning. Denied of an internship, went through several Career Advisors, and left me in the loop. I took my complaint all the way to the top finding out that nobody would do his or her part to make this happen for me.

Persistent in getting interviews was a great feeling. Finding out weeks to months later that they would not hire me due to my skills not current through DeVry was a disappointment. Courses they offer with their curriculum was not beneficial in the job world was a downturn. Misled and not living the American Dream with potential with a well-known Company was biggest disappointment. Instead, I am stuck with a student debt that accumulates absurd interest is not what I ask. DeVry did not fulfill their requirements to their graduates. My student loan is old because it was in deferment for periods due to no income, not able to get decent career job just medial jobs and there were hiring freeze due to Depression. Career advisors did not meet their standards to connect their graduates in maintaining employment with well-known Companies.

This debt had caused me turmoil knowing that I could have a better-secured life if DeVry did their part. My outstanding student loan along with others are in the same boat should be erased with no claiming the difference on the tax return. We are not gaining profits – just asking for a second chance of student loan debt free or pursuing different career path. When we have to claim it on the tax return, you will have to worry paying the government.

I attended DeVry and graduated with a bachelors in 2003 and Went on to complete 2 Masters at Keller and despite my job hunt I am still unemployed. I have the education but no experience. by 2008 I felt like I was just taken advantage of with over 160,000.00 in student loan debt and no work since I graduated. What options of help do you all have for students before the dates on the settlement.

If you have got federal loans, you can go to the Department of Education’s StudentAid.gov to read about loan forgiveness and cancellation, or other programs like income-driven repayment plans. Information about one kind of loan forgiveness, known as a borrower defense discharge, is available here.  Applying for any of these programs is free.

If you have private loans, you could contact your loan servicer  to see what options it has about repayment.

I just graduated this year and my loans are 58000 and that not make sense at all because all my classes are online ???why i had been charged so much money ????for MPA

Hello, I fit all four pieces of the requirement, but never received anything from DeVry about loan forgiveness in January 2017. Is there someone I could contact about seeing if I'm still eligible?

You can contact DeVry. If you think you were eligible for loan forgiveness but did not receive it, you can report that to the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint.

I attended those dates and have received nothing. I paid plenty of my own money and they haven't given me anything or sent me a notice of any kind.

I would like to know what is going on exactly with my case. I have since shown that Devry through a technicality is not eligible to give student loans in Texas AT ALL because its a for profit company. The issue of online v onsite becomes the only loophole for them to get around that. The Department of Education was suppose to have had a decision by now and they delayed this. I don't know if they are fighting with Devry to get a settlement for them and then they are willing to expunge some of the loans but I really want to know why this is taking so long.

This FTC blog has information about the FTC settlement with DeVry.

I don't have information about the questions you're asking about Department of Education actions.

i began to receive military benefits to pay for school, because to DeVry I had ran out of money to finish my degree. I did not understand the type of benefits I was receiving wince I was a dependent of a veteran I went to the school with the approval letter. The schools Veteran school rep was not available, the school was so in need register me. That they just re enrolled me and told me they would take care of everything. Not being told that had made me a sign to get loans from the school them selfs. They said they would be paid back by the VA. About 2 sessions they still wasnt able to be paid. I had to call the VA my self, at the time I was informed that I would only receive a small check for as allowance not to pay the entire school. The allowance was only about 900.00 a month. The school credit cost over 500 a unit, and I was a full time student. Now I am not only 77k in debt in student loans. BUt another 16k with DeVry, how do I get rid of the Devry loan that was told to me that it would be taken care by the VA?

If you have loans with DeVry or the VA, you can contact them for information.
