The FTC’s Debt Collection Hall of Shame has some new inductees

Exceptionally talented sports legends, musicians, and actors all have something in common – halls of fame. At the other end of the spectrum are banned debt collectors. They, too, get special recognition… in the FTC’s hall of shame.

A year ago, the FTC first issued its list of banned debt collectors – individuals and companies whose behavior was so egregious that courts have banned them permanently from participating in the debt collection business. In February 2015, the FTC’s Hall of Shame contained 63 inductees; there are now more than 100.

Several recent inductees were recognized for their dishonorable deeds during Operation Collection Protection — the first coordinated federal-state enforcement initiative targeting deceptive and abusive debt collection practices. Those dis-honorees are: Broadway Global Master Inc., K.I.P., LLC (Payday Loan Recovery Group), National Check Registry, LLC  and Premier Debt Acquisitions, LLC.

Are you being contacted by a debt collector? It’s important to understand your rights. And if you think a collector has violated those rights, the FTC wants to hear about it. Your complaints give us leads to follow, and may stop a collector from mistreating someone else. Got a minute? Watch our short video about dealing with debt collectors.

I received $ from Africa it wasn't a scam I thought but then they wanted me to send almost all of it back to them to get the rest of my cash. I didn't do it.Now they have several alledged different winnings if mine to release some want $40 some say $90 none say $100.00 and I will get a western union daily of $5000.00 until I reciecieve a total of $1.7 million. Any ideas?

It is not wise to give your bank account number to someone you don't know. He might say he will put money into your account, but he can also take your money if he has your account number.

Some scammers ask people to open a new bank account for them. The scammer will put money into the account, and ask the victim to send money out of the country. Maybe the scammer has stolen the money he puts into the account. Maybe he uses a fake check to 'deposit' money. When the victim takes money out, she could be helping to commit a crime.

If someone says you won a prize, but you must first send money, don't do it. If you truly win a prize, you will get the prize without paying a fee.

Total scam. RUN!!!

Surprisingly enough, even Publisher's Clearing House is a big scam. I signed up for the thousands per week money contest for grins and played their games of the prize getting closer & closer is I just go back and andwer a few questions. I gave them no personal information though.
Finally, tiring of their endless pursuit of that great prize and being only "one step" away from winning three times, I unsubbed, which they make very difficult. Then their mails continued to come. Well, that raised a new game so I unsubed again, and then occe more for good measure. That was 2 1/2 months ago yesterday. The mailings from them come at the rate of two a day, and go to another email address I never gave them. Now I had proof they were spamming!
I reported each and every spam starting a week after my last unsub and continue to do so. I also treat them exactly as you should with spammers: I never even read their spams I just report each and every one I receive, each one copied to the FTC database. As a spamfighter of over a decade I've devised methods to report spam that only require three clicks total, so it's no skin off my nose. I use a script to automate this process.
Others should do the same as I do when they simply lead you on and never give any idea of how long it takes. Apparently it'll go on for months and months at least, on a daily basis.
When their spam finally stops, if ever, or when a full year has expired, I plan to put an "expose" on my own personal website for all to read. I've kept every spam they sent me and will post a full history of this interesting little side trip I've taken.

A company called Map Processing Solutions has been calling my home every day for the last 2 weeks looking for someone that does not live at my home. I told them every time they called to take my name and phone number out of their database. "Crystal" began asking me for my phone number so "she could remove it" from their system. I wasn't comfortable with giving her that additional piece of info. The number she called from was 866-514-9653. I have filed several complaints over the past 2 weeks so hopefully, this will stop soon.

I have received calls from a Madison Green, legal carrier, say that she has papers to serve me. With the intent to appear, but they have instructioned her to give me a curiosity call first. And to call this phone number 877 423 6702 before April 5, 2016 because that's when she schedule to serve me at my place of employment or resident.then gives me a claim number 156515. 2 days later calls again this time she didn't have time to serve me on the 5th, so I will be served on April 8th, 2016

I have received calls as well from the EXACT SAME NUMBER...877-423-6702 stating the same nonsense from a Michael Davis. I know how the courts handle their legal issues, but for those that do not, courts are not going to call to inform you they're sending something before they actually send anything; they just send the necessary information. I don't understand how they are allowed to operate LYING to illicit panic and fear. SCAMMERS!!!!

Collect Pros sent a bill for something I never ordered twice once for $34.00 for whom It was for I don't know it was paid because it was a relatively small amount, then Friday last week they sent another bill for $96.86.I called the company they claim to be collecting for, and they stated that I am not in their system and have no record of me at all and have never sent me a bill she also stated that they do not use collection agentcies expect under very extreme cases.

Upon the sale of a debt by an account owner and purchase of the debt by a collector, are they than allowed to increase the balance due at the time of the sale?

Around April 2015 Direct TV quoted me $70 for TV service bundle with internet but wanted to charge $120 and additional $120 to AT&T, plus some $400 installation. After I refused to pay each company, AT&T and Dirctv wanted some $400 for the cancellation.

Now I need a conforming loan and I am not able to obtain one because my credit average is 608 and I need an average credit of 640 or more for a conforming 30-year fix loan. What can I do? I know that Directv and AT&T will insist that I own the money, although the had to pay and lost in court because of these bundling false presentations all over the country and still have pending lawsuits because of this

You can ask to correct errors on your credit report.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, both the credit reporting company and the company that gave information about you to a credit reporting company are responsible for correcting inaccurate or incomplete information in your report.

To take advantage of all your rights under this law, contact the credit reporting company and the information provider. This FTC article about disputing errors on credit report will help you.

I wish you'd do something about IC systems. They harass with calls and now they've started emailing! That can't be legal. I've filed multiple complaints about them, including one 10 minutes ago. They are a menace.

I know what you mean. They blatantly and repeatedly pull the phony "IRS is about to sue you" scam, but they don't seem to get the FTC's attention.

I was called by Techbulls, Las Vegas, NV that they worked for Microsoft and were cetified MS Technicians. They put porno on my screen saver, deleted my antivirus, and deleted all my personal Career paperwork that can't be replaced. They wanted $99.99 for their work. Of course, I denied the info at my bank but intend to collect damages. I want you to report this business so that others won't be scammed.

To report a problem with a company, go to FTC.gov/complaint. You can give details about what happened, and the information you provide will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

The comments you make here on the blog don't go into the law enforcement database.

I get more calls since registering on your do not call list.

I get more telemarketing calls since registering on your do not call list.

This number called my place of employment twice and left voicemail stating they were Molly Malloy and had a "notice to appear" they were going to serve me with at work or home . 1st call said by 5PM June 15th, 2nd call said 5PM June 14th. They told me to call them back 877-423-6702 with the claim # they left on the message. I came home and told my husband and he said it sounded like a scam and to report them.

I know now that someone can't just call you up and say if you don't take care of the matter within 2 days that they will be arresting you in your county. These people, one named Mitch Stone called both of my daughters with threatening messages about a debt of 300.00 from 2013. Left no company name or even what it was for.

I filed Chapter 7 in Feb/2016 and all debt was discharged. Mainly medical from Stage 3 BC. The number that came up when he called my daughters is 678-257-7270 and when I looked the number up on People Smart it is a GA number, but belongs to a Lovely Adkins in AZ. Makes no sense and there are more numbers associated with Lovely Adkins. 678-519-1114, 678-289-0616, and 770-258-9556. This is not the first rodeo with these scammers. I recently dealt with the "Bureau of Defrauders" and they still occasionally send me e-mails but I DO NOT open them and block them. I do not recall anything about 300.00, but I checked my credit report and there is nothing there about anything for 300.00, further, if I ever do speak to this Mitch Stone, I will most certainly ask for the validation letter.

I told my daughters to block that number, tell him not to call again, as I read they can only call 3rd parties ONCE and threaten him with the police himself!!!! Whoever said we have to be astute, you are absolutely correct. Thanks for the site! I also filed a complaint on your other site to get it in the database.

Thank you for reporting this to the FTC. It's good that you're on top of things and know you have a right to a validation letter, and that it's important to check your credit report.

My mother received a call from Mitch Stone asking for my father, when he found out he's been dead for awhile he said he was going to have my wife arrested for a debt..we contacted this guy and asked a flurry of questions all to which he had no answers and he got abusive when we asked for the information on a check that he said she comitted fraud with. We haven't had a checking account in nearly 5yrs but this guy had her social security number and my address, I've dealt with debt collectors and this felt more like a scam than anything, the first red flag was asking for my deceased father the second was the way he got extremely angry when the questions were turned on him and he didn't have the proper answers..the number he called from was 678-257-7270..

I have been called and been threatened to be arrested on Monday which is labor day at my work place for an unpaid credit card. This man has also left me a text message. He hasn't said it was for a credit card. I just know that that is the only thing I'm behind on. As I do have several. All of which are always paid on time except I gave my daughter the money for this one and she failed to pay it. Never the less he has no right to do this as I have never been served with anything or have not avoided my responsibility. Definitely feel a scam. Alabama does not jail you for unpaid credit card.

678-257-7270 Mitch Stone called today threatening me with Felony charges in Placer county for a bad check. Absolute scam. I do not have any bad checks.

Machol & Johannes, LLC has been harassing me for a while but they continued to threaten me with an impending court date after "serving" me. When I contacted them inquiring when the court case would be, they continued to give me the date Feb. 18th which is a Saturday, therefore courts wouldn't be open in my county. When finally pressed, they admitted it's the date they intended to file (Also a lie since both the courts and their offices are closed on weekends).

Whenever I asked to speak to a lawyer, I would be transferred multiple times to voicemail boxes of people who never call back (happened multiple times). This resulted in multiple calls and when I finally DEMANDED TO speak to a Lawyer. I never spoke to a lawyer but the girl on the phone explained that if I paid them, I wouldn't be submitted to court.

I explained that I was only attempting to pay back my debt but that I couldn't afford to pay everything out right. The person on the phone set up a payment plan and explained that I need to submit that signed payment plan back to them so that they could begin charging me. When I finally received the documents I needed to sign to set up the payment plan, there were fees that weren't mentioned at all as well as the dates didn't add up to the agreement on the phone.

Lastly, the terminology on the payment plan left me deeply bothered.

"NO NOTICE OF NONPAYMENT WILL BE SENT."

Which means you wouldn't even know if your Payment method failed and they would hurt you first rather than follow up and attempt to re-collect payment.

This company has proven that they don't mind engaging in deceptive practices such as Lying and intimidation to collect a debt. I do not trust a firm that conducts business this way to respect my personal information or respect the terms of a contract. I've dealt with this firm multiple times and every time, they have engaged in deceptive business practices. I request that the FTC have a look at Machol & Johannes, LLC and protect the public from deceptive debt collection practices.

P.S. While we're at it, the practice of buying debt should really just be outright banned. It's unethical, creates this kind of business environment where scamming runs rampant and hurts the American public as a whole.

These are useful details for a complaint. Please report this to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. The information you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations. The comments you put here on the blog don't go into the law enforcement database.

I just had the same Mitch Stone call looking for my father from number 678-649-3028. He referenced a case number and said that he would wave his right to council if he did not receive a call back. He also called my brother and left the same notice. I looked up the case number and it does not exist.

My home has been on the market to sell for 2 years, I have lost 3 potential buyers because Shellppint Mortgage will not respond to the offer request. Now, there is another offer on the table and Shellpoint will not return calls to my realtor.

You can report a problem you have with a mortgage company. Report it to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The CFPB will send your complaint to the company and work to get you a response.
