Bogus debts, bogus collections

At the FTC, we sue abusive debt collectors and try to do right by people who’ve been harmed by unlawful practices. But we also try to protect people from being harmed in the first place. That’s exactly why I’m here: to warn you about debt collectors calling about debts that the FTC knows are bogus.

The bogus debts supposedly are payday loans from these companies: USFastCash, 500FastCash, OneClickCash, Ameriloan, United Cash Loans, AdvantageCashServices, or StarCashProcessing. The companies are real, but if you’re hearing from anyone other than those companies, the debts are fake and you don’t need to pay.

Sometimes, if they can’t collect money owed to them, companies sell lists of those debts to debt collectors. But, in this case, we know that didn’t happen. The company that processed and serviced loans from these companies told the FTC that it never sold any customer or account information to debt collectors. Their lawyer even filed a legal declaration saying that.

Even so, we’ve still heard about abusive calls from debt collectors claiming to be collecting money owed to the companies listed above – and we already know that’s not true. But we also know that many of the people who have been called never even had a loan with those lenders in the first place – so the debts themselves also are bogus.

What to do if you get a call from a debt collector who says you owe money to one of those companies? You have rights. Ask for a validation notice, which says what you owe and to whom. After you get it, consider sending a letter saying that you don’t owe the debt. If you’re getting debt collection calls, check your free credit report at annualcreditreport.com. If a debt you don’t recognize shows up there, follow the instructions to dispute the debt. And, as always, report any problems to the FTC.

I got a call from TACS at my work place and the HR people told me. It's very frustrating.
When I asked for a written letter to be sent to my home from them they said they can't supply that information due to threats they got. I said I only pay things by money order they said get a pre paid card. This sounds fishy

I received a call on my cell at approximately 5:30 pm on a Saturday saying something about my credit card and I hung up. I called the number back and the live voice said he did not call me. This happens all the time and it is on my cell phone. I am on the do not call registry but it does not seem to help.

This person, Stephen Johnson, called twice and said that I owe a debt and that if I don't pay up, they will garnish my wages. What bull! Sick of these slimy creatures and their attempts to shake down people. Bring these fools to justice!! They don't serve a purpose and cause pain and misery, nothing more. Should get a job and work nine days straight, like I did and do, both. Then, they wouldn't have time to harass good people that don't even dream up of such capers!

first call I got was from 412-867-8453 saying from the IRS threatening to arrest me if I didn't pay. I told him I thought it was a scam after awhile on the phone and he hung up. The next day I rec'd a call from 347-926-7315 who cursed me out and hung up as soon as I told him he was a scam. Look out people!

REc'd call today on my mobile from a voice altered rob-call claiming to be the IRS and that I needed to call immediately,, that I was going to be sued and have a lien, etc. This person never identified themselves nor used my name. Since I know I do not owe the IRS any money, and I also know they do not call you to tell you they are suing you, I knew it was a scam. I filed a proper FTC complaint through this website. The phone number was 701.212.4211

Keep getting voice messages from a woman, who claims to be from the law offices of Joel Cardis, Norristown, Pa. 610-239-7147 or 610-382-5137, concerning a debt I owed. I have not owed anything for many years, do not have any debt. I keep getting these phone calls, do not answer, if I don't know the number. But how can we stop the phone calls. I've got my block limit of 32 numbers in the phone now. No I will not call them back. Just want to know anyone else out there getting the same calls?

I received a call from this #, and the caller identified the Company as "Insight Global Services". The caller said that they were a "Mediation" firm, and threatened to take me to Court for unpaid Payday loans, that I supposedly Took out over 12 years ago.Since I used to use Payday Loans, I thought it might be legit, so I set up a payment plan, and stupidly gave them my debit card info. They told me that they had sent me several emails, and that my lack of response prompted this call. So I had an idea. I asked them to send me an email with my Payment arrangements. They.refused. That's when I started to think that I had been scammed. So I asked again. I.told them them that if they had already sent me several emails, then there shouldn't be a problem with sending me another. Again, they refused. Unfortunately, I had given them my Debit Card info. It wasn't until I hung up, did I do a search for the "Company's" name. Nothing came up on Bing, or Google. When I searched the phone #, I landed here.I immediately called my Bank to cancel my debit card. I feel like an idiot. So I am reporting this so that others don't take the bait, and fall into a trap like me. However, I did learn a valuable lesson: ALWAYS ask for an email from a caller you suspect is scamming you. If they are a legitimate Company, they will have no problem sending you an email. A dishonest person will never send an email, because then you would have hard evidence against them. BTW, they said they were calling from Florida, but the call originated from Kentucky..

I've been getting the same calls for my father. Threats to go to court and what not. He's been in a nursing facility for the last 6 years. Said they had all his info yet wanted me to give them his info. I don't think so. I hate scammers!

David,
The same thing happened to me. I am originally from Kentucky, had had a payday loan ten years ago and was worried. I asked for confirmation an paperwork --- nothing. I hung up and called back and asked to speak with the manager -- she was just as rude. Same company - the phone number was 270-775-0713. I reverse checked the phone number and it came up clean. This IGF or Insight Global is extremely deceptive. Please folks -- don't fall for it. Fortunately, I did find this page and found out that I wasn't the only one and filed a claim with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Insight Global has called me off and on for several months. When I ask for more information regarding the debt, etc., or I ask for a Validation Notice, they get nasty and hang up. Then the calls start up, again, a few months later. I finally filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office in my State. I recommend that everyone file a complaint with their attorney general or with the FTC.

I just received a call from this company. The automated voice asked for my EX mother-in-law. Since that was a messy past, I made sure to stay on call to have number removed. When live person answered, they asked for her by name. I told them to remove my number from list. Before I could get out EX, the call was disconnected.

I also landed here from doing a search about a"Insight Global Services" scam. I too have been receiving calls from a person claiming to be from this name. Turns out there is a company with the name, it's just that they are by no means a debt collecting company. They are putting all the same threats out to me, claiming I owe some ammount. I didn't fall for it. If you know what your credit report looks like, then you would know if there was really something out there with this much urgency. I tried getting them to send me info just for fun, but of course they wouldn't. Just know you bills and debts, and you shouldn't have any problems catching these scammers in the act.

I have received two phone calls today from someone claiming to be with the U.S.Treasury Department regarding some problem I have. Funny the call came from 646-506-9415 the IRS scam originating in Mexico.

BRG collection scam, calling from many different numbers - home, work, sister. I answered one call today, told them they need to send demand letter and they said they did before calls started - and scoffed when I said funny I did not receive it. I told them a work daily with a country sheriff on fraud myself, and further their scam is all over the internet. Caller then said goodbye and hung up. 3 hours later they called me at work again, I stated they needed to send demand letter via certified mail and it has to be notarized, and I hung up. I know this will go on for months - although I think this company is in the USA.

Keep getting calls at home, work, cell as well as family and friends. They keep stating that I owe for a debt that I do not have, they keep threatening to send paperwork and garnish my wages. My employer called and asked they remove the work number and no longer call The woman again threatened and hung up on my employer. Is there a way to make these calls stop?

The FTC issued a blog post about this very issue back in January. Please read How to stop calls from debt collectors, and report your experience to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. Complaints help the FTC and other law enforcement agencies bring scam artists to justice and put an end to unfair and misleading business practices.

Just received phone call claiming to be IRS about to file law suit against me. Did not give usual info like call Mr. X at 800-xxx-xxxx. According to internet it was new Cingular cell phone. 408-250-2541

just got another call from a robo recorded message saying that I, did not call for a certain person either, had my SS# and Drivers License Attached to a Pretrial case never said what it was about or anything I think it is a scam Money matters are civil not criminal cases! Has any1 got calls like this?

Yes I have been dealing with them for a year now. The calls are getting to a harassment level with them even calling my ex husband and his wife telling them they need my contact information when they clearly have it. I contacted a lawyer today to end this. The numbers that have called me are 855-208-6843, 251-216-6193, 205-419-3885, and 205-289-7728. There is a lady that is rude and can't hardly be understood due to her accent and a man that I have talked to with a stupid fake name of Christopher Silvers. They have all of my information including a very old work email address from when I worked at a bank. They claim that they are collecting for two different online payday loan places that I took loans from using that old work email address. I ended my employment with that bank in 2004 and haven't had access to that email address since 2004 and they claim the loans were made in 2009. They say the balance is over 3,000 and they try to make a settlement with me and then I refuse and they threaten wages being garnished and taking me to court. I've told hem a million times I will see them in court but of course nothing comes. I'm tired of them and I'm not stopping until they are stopped. That's enough. It seems that they have done enough people like this so its time to get them. I meet with my lawyer next week and I will give updates about any information I get in order to help others out.

Please keep us informed they started calling my home.

Got a call 8/4/16 from Vanessa Edwards with "Elite Services" 334-245-0148 claiming she had 2 charges to file against me the next day for bank fraud. She was using my maiden name, gave me a diff # to call 727-350-3154 to speak to an attorney who had more info on what it was. When I call this lady "Mrs.Edwards" she tells me I purposely wrote a bad check in sept 2012 with old bank account, I never did this, and told her that, she tells me to get an attorney or I'll be arrested. All total bs

855-208-6843 are calling me and my brother's cell number. I've never given his cell to anyone. Anyway, they leave threats that they are coming to my house and work for a debt I've never owed. They are leaving this as a message at my brother's number too. Isn't this illegal? What do I need to do to stop this madness???

The FTC published a blog post about this last December. Please see Don’t recognize that debt? Here’s what to do. for helpful tips.

I received a call at work. B Civil complaint issued and i had to pay immediately to avoid being served/arrested at home or POE. Scared me and my BP went sky high. Balance supposedly from payday loan in 2009! I canceled my debit card and looked up number i was given.

9084090097. Dont answer that number. The initial contact was via blocked external number then connex to that 908 number apparently a mobile device via uninor network out of delhi metro india. Traced to two different areas in nj however. Woman has called twice and left msgs on vm. I saved them. Threatened to contact HR for wage verification. I contacted my HR dept. Harrassment now ensues. Every time that number shows up I get scared and BP rises. Be careful. I contacted the prosecutors office in my county as well.

Has anyone heard of Forward Movement Recovery Collections or FMR? Have been dealing with them over the last couple of years regarding a loan. A few months ago, I changed my contact information and wanted to update my information but had lost their number. So I checked online to see if I can find a website or a phone number. I really didnt find a phone number but information regarding payday loan scams which lead me to the Better Business Bureau website which contained over 200 complaints against them. I did find 2 phone numbers but they went to the same voice mail address. 2 weeks, later no response, so I decided to put a hold on the next payment. 3 days later, they called me concerned about not receiving a payment. I told them that I would to have information regarding this account sent to me and was told that it will be sent but was very anxious in receiving their payment and was getting very anxious or upset that I would give them a payment. Im not denying that I owe this and it is close in being paid off but dont want this to come back on saying I never paid. Also, when I checked my credit report they were not on there and stating it would only go on my report if I wasnt paying it. I find it strange that I called a couple of weeks ago they never returned my call, but when my card declined their payment they called me 3 days later.

Some company calling themselves FMR has been harrassing me lately. I have not answered the phone once, but they continue to call even my mother and sister! Not even sure how they got their numbers! I hope they don't begin with my place of employment.

A collector may contact other people – but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney.

For more information, please see the FTC publication, Debt Collection.

I received a call from Primer Processors claim I ignored a summons sent to me but I never received one and now they were going to file (2) Class B Felony warrants against me if I do not call 855-244-1749 but the call came from 803-369-8106. Never said what this was about but they wished me good luck. I don't owe anyone anything. What do I do?

This sounds like a scam, but you can call the courts in your jurisdiction to be sure.

Since you commented in response to an FTC blog post about debt collection, please know that a legitimate debt collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. The notice has to include the name of the creditor you owe money to, and what you can do if you don’t think you owe the money.

For more information, read our post, Don’t recognize that debt? Here’s what to do.

So I started getting calls at roughly 7:30 in the morning from a company called TACS. They have all my information. I questioned the debt they are claiming I owe, and I requested (2 times now) that a validation letter be sent via mail, not email. They refused, stating that they only correspond with people via email. Is that legitimate? They state that according to debt collection laws, email is considered a form of "written" notification. They are claiming to be a debt collection mediation company. I'm already annoyed with them for calling at 7:30 in the morning.

Is this something that should be reported or is it a waste of time to do so?

Yes, please report what happened to FTC.gov/complaint. The details you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

There doesn't seem to be a prohibition against a debt collector sending you a validation notice by email. However, if you send the debt collector a written notice (by email or postal mail) saying that you dispute the debt, the collector must respond by postal mail.

If the principal purpose of a business is to collect debts, or they regularly make attempts to collect debts, they are "debt collectors" under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Under the FDCPA, a debt collector can't use deception to collect a debt, and they can't call you before 8 am or after 9 pm. The debt collection article has more information about what debt collectors must do, and your rights when a debt collector calls.

I received a call from 8664168339, saying I was getting ready to be sued or a payday loan from back in 2010. I asked for the company so I could contact the to make sure it was me that owed the money . he gave me a list of the payday loan above and said that by the time they get them, they don't get the original company. He said that I would go in the check cashing system and I would have my driver license revoked. He also said it would cost me around 2000.00 if it went to court. He did not give me the name of his company. I told him I paid mine. He I had a year to get all my information together and get my money back. Is this legitimate.

If you know you have a debt, you can contact the lender and ask about your account. You can also ask the lender if the debt collector who called you is working with the lender.

You have rights when you deal with debt collectors.

For example, within five days after they first contact you, a debt collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe. The notice must show the name of the company you owe, and explain what you can do if you think you don't owe the money.

This FTC article tells about fake debt collectors. The person who called you could be a fake. The article tells you signs of a fake, and has tips about what to do if a fake collector calls.

Thanks you so much for the information

I have had 50+ calls in the last month for TACS (Transamerica Consumer Services) demanding payment for unpaid payday loans. I've never taken out a payday loan in my life. What has to be done to shut down these slimey, cowardly low-life scammers?!

You can report the calls to the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint. The information you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

Tacs also calls and threatens me on a day-to-day basis. They have also called my boss and family. I know i dont have the debt Ive informed the FTC and now i look foward to their calls. I sing to them, tell them cheesy jokes, even asked one of em to dinner lol. Have fun with these scum.

I received phone calls from a feinburg group saying they are going to arrest me for a old pay day loan... and I get calls from a Hamilton law from both in flordia. They call me from different phone numbers. They, are real annoying

I keep getting phone calls from TACS phone numbers in San Antonio about an alleged claim that they have. When my husband asked that they send said claim in the mail they hung up on him. Calls stopped for about 6 months and now they have started again and they are calling from multiple numbers and calling my sister, too. I have no unpaid debt and there are so many complaints against this company for fraud that it is ridiculous. Not sure what to do..

You can try some call-blocking solutions, let the calls go to voice mail, and report the company to law enforcement at FTC.gov/complaint. The details you give will go into a database that law enforcement nationwide uses for investigations.

These TACS people are driving me nuts! I asked for a validation notice and they said we don't have to do that. You need to send us a bank statement that proves to us you didn't get a payday loan?!!? I asked them to send me the notice or remove me from their call list. I do not know them, their client, or ever take out a payday loan.

Transamerica customer services in San Antonio TX. Say I owe a Payday loan from 2011. Threatened me with legal action. Said Original client will persue legal action. Refused to give me the validation letter I requested. Said it would be sent by email. FTC rep I spoke to says this is a red flag.

I got a call from IGS today, I asked for a letter of validation and was told that one was sent to a old address years ago and hey are not required to send another one. They said that if I want another one then the court would serve me with court paperwork and I can explain to the judge why I did not pay them. Please help, I have until Monday to deal with them. I will not give my bank account info or credit card info to them. They said they would take a prepaid card.

A legitimate debt collector must give you a written validation notice within five days of contacting you. The notice must tell you how much money you owe, the name of the creditor you owe, and what to do if you think you don't owe the money.

A caller might be a fake debt collector if he:

  • wants you to pay a debt you don't recognize
  • refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number
  • asks you for personal or financial information
  • tries to pressure you into paying, threatens to have you arrested, or says he'll report you to law enforcement

If you know you really owe a debt, call the creditor and ask about your account. Ask the creditor if it hired a company to call you to collect the debt. Don't give your bank or credit card account, or buy a prepaid card or iTunes card to give someone who calls out of the blue and says you owe money.

Received a phone call today from Insight Global Mediation Services today regarding an eight year old payday loan. This loan has been paid, however they contend that it is unpaid and they are a mediation company for the loan company and if I do not pay it they are going to take me to court. I asked them for a letter of validation and they said they already sent me one. I never received such a letter, and this was the first I have ever heard from them. The lady began talking over me and then told me she would see me in court and hung up.

These people are getting insane. I block a number and they call from 6 different others. I do not have a debt with them. I have talked to supervisors and managers according to them. I have requested written validation of the debt and they said they do not have to send it. I said I am not paying it so where do we go from here? They asked me to send them BANK STATEMENTS proving I did not get the loan. I told them no way. They just called me 4 times in a row this morning and all of last week from these numbers - 210-549-6976, 210-570-8174, 210-538-7450, 210-538-6263, 210-538-3286, 210-528-1419. This is harassment on every level of the word. Even if you block a number, they jump to another one. TACS. These people are hell bent on doing some real damage to people who will fall their spills.

Every month for about a year now I receive a call from "Tran American Consumer Services" from 210-549-6976, a San Antonio number, asking for a woman that is not me. They call daily until I wait on hold for a half hour and asked to be taken off the list. The calls stop for a month but always continue to come without fail. Today I got angry and demanded a supervisor. They said the only one they had was on lunch and it would be an hour before he came back. I said I would gladly wait. 5 minutes a supervisor named Stanley came on the phone and eventually hung up on me when I asked for his employee number, badge number, caller ID number, anything that could trace the call. He would not give it to me and hung up. I called back and got Monica who claimed to be a supervisor as soon as I asked for one. She said almost all of the employees there are supervisors. She would not give me any info on the call or herself either. There needs to be a stop with these guys. Please do something about it. I just reported them to the BBB. This has been going on for a year.

Scammer claiming to be a rep from a collection agency.

I keep getting calls from a company called TACS. They claimed I had a payday loan from 2010. They said it was from my Bank of America account that closed November 2009. Lol, when I informed them it was not true that I took out a payday Sept 2010 because I wasn't working. I asked her, lady wouldn't I have to show proof of income and an active bank account? I also asked how can I receive money from a loan company that was wired to a close account??!! She had no answers so she claimed I gave the company fake information. As I started laughing, I told her let's go to court because I have my proof. She said nobody said anything about court, they would just keep calling. I told her if she wants to hear me laugh out loud as she attempt to collect a bogus debt, then so be it.

I have been receiving calls from 210-570-8456 for a few months. Yesterday was the first time I finally answered. I was told there were several complaints against me. They asked me to verify my social, but when I refused and asked who do I supposedly owe money to, they said without verification of my social they could not give the information.

I said that's fine, then just send out the information in the mail so I can see in writing. Again was told that unless I confirm my social, they could not be sure they were sending to the correct person. Since I do know some consumer rights, I told him that I have a legal right to written verification of any debts they claim I owe, and do not contact me again unless it can be provided. Was told I have no rights and they owe me nothing if I don't give my social.

Blocked the number, but from what I have been reading, I will probably be contacted from a different number.
