Scammers are trying to get personal information from people by pretending to help with applications for disability benefits and claims. A recent alert from the Social Security Inspector General warns of this phishing scam, and — whether or not you’ve started an application for benefits — these scammers could contact you. They’re taking a shot in the dark, hoping that you have started an application, and hoping you’ll give them a little more info over the phone. To “complete the process,” they might ask you to give, or confirm, your Social Security number or bank account numbers.

If scammers get your information, you could face identity theft and benefit theft. So here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself:

  • Never give your Social Security number or account numbers to someone who calls you.
  • Don’t wire money or send money using a prepaid debit card. In fact, never pay someone who calls out of the blue.
  • If you have disability benefits, regularly check their status, and review your statements to make sure they’re right.

If you have questions about disability benefits, or get calls offering help with them, call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. And read up on more ways to combat phishing and identity theft.

I was getting as many as SIX calls/day from this company! I live in a 518 ac. I reported it and reported it and they still kept calling! I finally reported it to the DNC b/c they kept calling and they finally stopped after! But what an ordeal to go through! There was silence on the line and then I'd hear "I'm Amber. I want to speak to you about your disability benefits. I can get you to get over $2500/month b/c I know you are entitled to them." I heard this speech over and over. There was long periods of silence. I never gave any info! Nothing! FINALLY they stopped calling after I told the DNC registry about the calls that kept coming through! BEWARE!!! SCAM! SCAM! SCAM! DO NOT GIVE ANY INFO TO THESE PEOPLE! REPORT IT! KEEP AWAY FROM THEM!!!

The woman that called me implied she was with Social Security, which I know she couldn't possibly be, because Social Security doesn't call you, they send letters, and besides I'm already on disability, and she would know that if she was with Social Security.

They are using EXISTING phone numbers as I missed a call and called them back. 315-509-8748, 315-325-9561 Here's a question! Like I said, these are both WORKING NUMBERS. Not fake numbers that show up but you can't call back. How impossible is it for the authorities to track these people and make arrests? With all this government out there, how are they sitting somewhere answering phones on a live number and not being arrested? It would almost seem like whomevers in charge of that is ignoring this crime?

The number that those fools called me with is 312-274-7439. I told the jerk three times not to call my number again, the third time I told the idiot on the other end that the next call they received would be from the police and a local police officers came to my house and called them and let them know not to call my number again if they did we would proceed to make this a legal matter. The idiot said they would remove my number from their list. I told the officer that's what I was told the second time they called me. There's also another bunch of idiots that continue to call my number with their attempted scams this following is their number 305-400-9988 but they have it blocked so they can't receive call backs

Received a call from a company called National Disability 260-201-9666, woman first wanted to know if I could hear her then went into her pitch to help me file for SSDI of which I have never inquired about or applied for, I thought it was a scam and repeatedly told the woman I never inquired about SSDI, she hung up without explaining why she called my number. Be wary dint give any personal information to people you don't know or can't verify.

Yes, National Disability will ask if you can hear them okay. DO NOT ANSWER YES. That recorded yes in your voice will be used to claim you gave them consent to perform a charged service or to grant permission to get info on any accounts they are scamming on you.

Hey Timber5212 - you described almost exactly what happened to me about 5 minutes ago. The woman had a soft-spoken voice/tone and she immediately asked if I could hear her. After I said that I could hear her, she stated she was calling to help me with the rest of the SSDI process since I had already submitted my disability application. I simply said - I don't think I have submitted a disability application to date. It confused me at first because I am disabled so I have had to do some paperwork but I'm still working full-time so I have not submitted anything to go on full disability. I was just about to ask her a question (to make sure I understood what type of disability she was talking about) when I heard "CLICK" and she was gone! I looked up the name that she had told me and found this page. The number that called me showed Leesburg, FL: 352-320-0493 but this is also the area code that services all of Gainesville, FL. So these people are using internet or app numbers by the thousands from communities throughout the county to try to catch people in their scam net.

503-577-1175 called my number, but when I answered no one spoke. I called the number and Amy with National Disability answered. I said, "I would like you to place my number on your do not call list". Amy hung up on me. No I'm sorry or ok or anything kind. I called the number again and a National Disability recording answered and stated "our records show you do not qualify for social security at this time". Why did they call me in the first place. Please put this agency out of commission. I can't block these callers from calling me, as I do not have a smartphone, but they can block me from calling them???? Please find a way to put a STOP to these calls for good. Thank you!!! VJ

Getting calls from "Citizens Disability" - there were a few everyday last week; dropped off a bit after I complained on Yelp and told them I was notifying FTC. They can't be legit if they spoof numbers everytime they call. I keep blocking and they keep calling on a different Nevada number. Called again yesterday. Notified them on Yelp that I have been on DNC list for over 10 years and would be filing 2nd FTC complaint as they promised it would cease NLT last thursday and then ...they call again the following tuesday (so much for 48 hours to process).

I have been getting those calls for a while now. I'm on SSI but I only get average of about $105 per week. When they called, they took all my info and said "Im going to transfer you over to another benefit coordinator that will help you with your benefits" and the line went dead. They got me on that one.. There is another scam going around. The pitch is different but it always goes the same way. You will get a called and they will say they are from somewhere (it changes) Then they will say they are on a "recorded line, Can you hear me" as soon as you say yes, they hang up. They want the "verbal affirmitive" with that verbal "YES" they use that to get into your account somehow. With me being on SSI and getting very little, you get these calls and ya get hopeful cuz you think you have found somekind of help but they just rip you off. I got SUCKERED...
