Voicemail from an IRS imposter?

You get a call or voicemail from someone claiming to be from the IRS. You’re being sued and this your final notice, the caller says:

Don’t panic. And don’t return the call. It’s a scam.

Here are a few facts about the IRS to keep in mind if you get a similar call:

  • If the IRS needs to contact you, they’ll do it by mail first.
  • The IRS won’t demand personal information like credit card or Social Security numbers over the phone.
  • The IRS won’t threaten to arrest or sue you, or demand that you pay right away. The IRS also won’t tell you to use a specific form of payment like a money transfer from MoneyGram or Western Union, a cash reload from MoneyPak or Reloadit, or a gift card from iTunes or Amazon. Scammers ask you to use those ways to pay because they’re hard to track or cancel payments.

If you or someone you know receives a call like this, report it the FTC and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). Include the caller’s phone number, along with any details you have. If you’re not sure whether a call is really from the IRS, you can double-check by calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040. For more, check out this IRS imposter scams infographic. Share with friends and family. They may get the call next.

Now they are using the number I get weather and Amber alerts on.

I love these calls!! I tried the old, I'm 21 and have 4 kids, how can I pay this off??? Sobs!! Please I want to work with you. My co-worker and was cracking up. But they caught on and hung up. they don't like playing. Sigh ... back to work.

I received this almost identical call two times on July 3, 2017. In addition to the recording above, the caller said "the reason for this lawsuit is that you did a fraud." Poor grammatical construction. The number they left to call back are 844-307-4485 and 844-547-8686.

The phone number that called me was automated and it was from Florida 909 204 5050. It told me to call that number back for more information.

202-448-8920 is another IRS scam robo caller.

Today's number, till they change it again.

I just received a bot voice pretending to be the IRS they threatened to arrest me. The number is 202 559 5352.

received a call to day from 202-858-8261 - robo call from 'IRS' saying that an arrest warrant has been issued because I owe money - HA! already paid my taxes this year

Just got a call with automated voice message (202)800-8514 for arrest warrant from IRS.
Be aware for that number too!
What a joke!

Got a recorded call from 844-456-2545 saying that the IRS was about to file a lawsuit. I knew it wasn't me, but I do work with a company that has problems with the IRS, so I called back thinking it might be about that company. Nope, just a jerk trying to scam me. I'm on the not the do not call list, but still these calls get through.

Never thought about messing with them. I'll keep that in mind for next time.

recieved another message today new phone number 888-268-9849 message stated a warrant had been issued and IRS was going to sue return call to 888-268-9849. We have been called so many times so this time I called back. Woman answered phone IRS and I asked for her agent number she said no with heavy accent and said do not call and hung up. I pray no one falls for this scam

I received a few messages from my voice mail telling me the IRS has issued a warrant out for my arrest and I need to call them back at 412-368-5108

I have received everything from fake IRS calls to my name repeated on voicemail and of course no voicemails. Unlike these robocallers and scammers I will never under any circumstances pick up the receiver for any of them. They may as well quit on my phone number. No brains.

Just got the IRS Scam call from 877-393-9767. Said there was a lawsuit and potential arrest warrant out for me and they would seize my personal assets. Claimed I owed $7500 because of improperly filed wages. I told him I was reporting him and that he was fradulent. I asked where he was calling from and he hung up.

We got a call on the landline today im guessing it was for my parents. It was almost the exact voice recording sayong they are suing is and filing a lawsuit for fraud and we would be arrested for 25 years. Also we have caller ID so if it really was the IRS wouldnt the caller id say 'IRS'? Because it justs said california call

Gotten at least 11 of these calls from different numbers. 844-723-4697; 443-405-0005; 201-299-4315; a couple other numbers also but deleted them. Will not call back, this is definitely a waste of my time.

They called today 7-21-2017 from 844-320-8059. It was actually an automated message telling me I was being sued for bad taxes or whatever. So, be aware! I actually called them and the female scammer said she was form the IRS. I told her that I knew she was a scammer and she had the audacity to tell me I was wasting her time. Anyway, keep away from them.

I got a very similar call, but I do owe and I have failed to file for the past few years. The IRS has sent me a few letters and I haven't responded to them. Someone has been out to my house trying to serve me as well. So, when I received the automated message from the IRS advising me of the existence of an arrest warrant, I listened carefully because I am the perfect candidate for such a scam.

So, I blocked my number and called the number they left on the message. I was directed to a guy with a foriegn accent, but that's not a "give away" because I've called the IRS before and had a hard time understanding the Filipino accent of the real IRS employee. I was concerned mostly because the guy I spoke to never asked me for money. He simply went over the IRS's alleged attempts to serve the paperwork on me. He had my current address and also the name of my wife, who was on the business, and the name of my daughter, who's name was on the bank account. He also cited dates that agents had reportedly been out to my residence to serve me. I haven't been served, but someone has been out to my residence in the past trying to serve me. I don't recall if the dates match up.

But, it was the fact that he didn't ask me for money or direct me to anyone who asked me for money. He said there was nothing I could do about the arrest warrant at this point. I finally asked him, out of frustration, what was the purpose of the call and he said, it was to inform me.

I'm pretty sure my caller was a scammer, but given the information he had along with the fact he never asked me for money, I'm not 100% certain it was a "scam".

Does anyone know if the IRS would ever call to advise or inform you of the existence of the arrest warrant for "tax fruad" and "tax evasion"?

It seems to me that if they had a warrent and my address , as he claimed, they wouldn't call to advise me about it... they would just come execute it. But, we are talking about the government here and their could be some regulation requiring the government to advise when your case has gone to an arrest warrant.

Any advise to put me 100% at ease would be greatly appreciated.

The IRS does not call and say it is going to arrest you.

If you know you owe, or think you owe and want to check with the IRS, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

receiving several calls a day from 646-809-9654 each with a voicemail stating the call is from the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS and the call is to notify me that there is an arrest warrant issued against my name and identity and this is the last and final notice (HA! 3 last and finals each day!)before it is released to my state authorities. It requests I call back before it is too late.
The twist - when I tried to call back I received a recording stating the number could not be completed as dialed. Even with a 1 and the area code or without. I haven't checked this but I am wondering if Verizon Wireless is somehow blocking the call back since they have stepped up things on their end when it comes to inbound fraud calls. Will be checking on this... Blocking the incoming number now so no more "Last and final" notices.

218-331-0385 , it is a scam as well

2534658806 this is also another Indian scammer

I have been receiving a call from 617-982-1242 claiming they are the irs I been trolling them for 2 hrs now when I call it I get busy signal lol

I just got a voicemail from 803-272-4636 telling me that a warrant has been issued for my arrest and before it sent to my local county I need to give them a call it was the IRS fraud department do you know if this too is a scam has me worried and confused

I get these calls frequently and laugh every time. The IRS will NOT call you and threaten legal action. I hope that nobody has actually fallen for this crap. Agree with other comments that its pretty hysterical to just keep them on the line and mess with them.

The most recent calls I received were back to back and left the same recorded message - they have to use a recorded message or you wouldn't be able to understand them.

202-455-5956 (Washington DC)
352-587-5009 (Brooksville, FL)

These scams have been going on for years. These latest calls this week were from 1-877-685-7443 to my cell.

I was left a message supposedly from the IRS investigation department stating that a warrant had been issued for my arrest and that I would be arrested if I did not call the number back immediately, the number was 888-578-6279.

I had an automated message on my voicemail August 14, 2017. # was 318-478-8337 just as another comment stated. They must hear back asap before proceeding in any legal matter...

Well I got a voicemail that said it was the internal revenue service and that they are filing a lawsuit against me from number 1-484-666-6784. Called back and said circuits are busy and to try later. Since it seems fishy I googled to see how to make sure the message was indeed from IRS and the voicemail scam sounds the same as mine but with different phone number... Be careful everyone this is very upsetting...

This is a totally useless site and waste of money

Yes I've been receiving all sorts of calls from phone numbers claiming to be the IRS and its a scam this time they left a message but it was a dude's voice not a chick the number is (457)219-2363 I didn't used to get these this hard but now I'm getting them at least between 1-6 x per day luckily for me I don't answer numbers I don't know or ones that say scam or potential scam this is becoming tiresome can't these people just go get a legal job if they are putting forth this much effort to take your money there's just as many jobs that can give you the same but it's legal.

Got the same message, but I actually am over due for taxes :(

I received a phone call today 475-223-0026 Sandra Lewis ID# 6911. She demanded I pay by using my credit card then she said she will send federal officers to come and arrest me if I don't pay. I filed a police report. The deputy called back the phone, and the person on the other end hung up the phone.

I just received a call from(202)858-9824....said the IRS had a warrant issued for my arrest.

This number 516-210-2687 has called me 7 times in 1 hour! It's a recording saying there's a warrant for my arrest and my local authorities will be informed. Lol, no authorities have shown up. These people truly need to be arrested themselves. It's disgusting that there are people who do these things!

Received call from Mew Jersey, 201-799-9097 with automated Indian accent, This is IRS, arrest warrant issued, blah blah. Fraud!

Just got call from (214) 275-9164. I didn't answer. Automated machine left me a msg. That is was officer Parker and I had a lawsuit on me from the IRS

These scammers (630)403-6579 won't leave me alone! They keep calling and saying they are the IRS and I will be arrested, etc...because I committed intentional fraud-lol How can I report them and make them go away? If I don't answer, they leave a voice message! Thank you!

Block the number on your phone! Your telephone service provider's website should have instructions for how to do that, and the "Block" option should be on your phone's menu for saving numbers. You can "save" numbers to the "Block" function.

803-678-9698 is the latest fraud! number

2067366950 is the number i got. They called me and wasnt even a full voicemail. It was cut off to ... A lawsuit against you please call us back at 2067366950 immediately. So i called it to see wth it was talking about and it didnt even ring and then it said your call did not go through... My guess would be its a scam.

Got my call today from 2067366950. I knew it was a scam so I played with him. Kept him on the phone for about 45 min pretending to be an elderly person that was so afraid of going to jail that I would do anything not to be locked up.

I played with them until I was tired and then I lit into them and curse them out. They were surprise as heck. My co-workers had a good laugh.

I just got one of these calls. The phone # they left is 312-912-7514. I am leaving the # hear hoping that someone with the ability to find and prosecute these scammers is following this blog
