Struggling to make your mortgage payments?

If you’re behind on your mortgage payments or worried about how you’ll make the next one, help may be available. But you have to act fast. December 30, 2016 is the last day to apply for assistance under many federal Making Home Affordable programs, which were created to help homeowners struggling with their mortgage payments. Picture of a mortgage statement, a small calculator, and a pen.

The biggest of these programs, the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), may help you lower your monthly mortgage payments. Other programs can offer options if home ownership is no longer affordable or desirable for you, you’re unemployed, or you owe more on your mortgage than your home is worth.

The programs are designed to meet homeowners’ different needs and financial situations. For example, you may be eligible for a HAMP mortgage modification if you meet these five requirements:

  • You’re struggling to make your mortgage payments because of financial hardship.
  • You’re behind or in danger of falling behind on your mortgage.
  • You got your mortgage on or before January 1, 2009.
  • Your property has not been condemned.
  • You owe less than $729,750 on your primary residence or rental property.

Remember — you don’t need to be in default to be eligible.

The deadline for applying is just weeks away. Free, HUD-approved housing counselors are available at 888-995-HOPE (4673) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help you understand available options, discuss the documents you’ll need, prepare your application, and work with your mortgage company. Visit www.makinghomeaffordable.gov for more information.

If you need help with your mortgage, now is the time to act! Call 888-995-HOPE (4673) today.

Hello My mortgage company has denied me three times for this program and has completely done illegal things to block me. I am at my wits end. I don't know where to turn. I was told that because I started receiving disability and not unemployment. I could not an unemployment forbearance. I need time I wasn't in my house for more than a year. Third time that I was in my home for more than a year but didn't have more ham six months of payments. When I asked for the guidelines and whether my mortgage was Fannie Mad or Freddie Mac they stated they use their guidelines. It's a n fha mortgage. I went to two counseling agencies and who sat on my paperwork. Then the mortgage company waited 30 days to send their third party authorization when I already signed one. US Bank are discriminateing against me because I have real equity in my home and a resident of DC. They want my property and I need help real help.

You can call the free HUD-approved housing counselors are available at 888-995-4673.

Or, if you are an older Washington, DC resident, you can call Legal Counsel for the Elderly at AARP on E Street NW. Call them at (202) 434-2120 and ask for help with your housing issue.

I called and applied KYH CA but since I'm legally married, spouse out of country (I don't know where he'said at) they can't help me. Spouse signed a quit claim when I purchased the property, I'm the only one on note, I'm currently on disability fighting cancer, but they can't process my application without spouse.

I have a Credit Card lean on my mortgage does this stop me from taking advantage of any of these plans?

Please call the free, HUD-approved housing counselors at avai at 888-995-4673 and ask.

I wish this would have been in place before now!! I lost my home due to the countrywide home loan fiasco in 2011, purchased in 2004. This option would have saved me from losing my home! would have been living at the home for 13 years now

Why is USBank Trust allowed to steal homes? They tefuse to provide me the balance to reinstate my home they want to foreclose on me. Because The FHA insurance was paid the default amount when I fell behind they paid now they want my home for nothing.

I do not qualify because I am a responsible home owner!! The rich seem to be able to get Help, how does that work???

I lose my hours but I think let not right because I'm victims ID Theft 2003 I'm trying to need help about that is my address

You can get help with identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov.

You can report the crime. You can make a record of the information that got stolen, and get letters to send to businesses to report identity theft.

Farm Credit of NW Fl, ACA is trying to foreclosure my farm after predatory lending, predatory servicing and mortgage fraud. They have violated Fl Statutes, Farm Credit's own Borrowers Rights and 12 and 16 US Codes....Praying

For what it's worth now, which is nothing, the HUD Approved Housing Counselor's and the HOPE Hotline provided absolutely NO help whatsoever. NONE. ZERO. The last two times that I called begging for help, I was told both times that they were not permitted to help me with my mortgage servicer AT ALL. Their only function was to explain to me the things that I didn't understand, including the vernacular lingo, and provide a VERY general overview of the process. Neither one of those last two "counselors" would help me speak with my mortgage servicer. One did agree to listen in on the conversation that I was going to have with the bank, but when the bank learned that he was also on the call, they refused to speak to me at all. He told me that was their prerogative and that there was nothing he could do about it. I would just have to proceed on my own.
The first time that I called, I was given WRONG information. The second time I called, I was told the previous "counselor" gave me incorrect information that didn't apply to my situation. (Really??!! He could not intelligently discuss a loan modification under the MHA program???!! That is not only harmful to the person seeking help, it is inexcusable and reprehensible.
Finally, the second counselor that I spoke to was going to make things right and spend however much time was necessary to really help me. While I appreciated her kindness, she, not surprisingly, gave me completely different, even contradictory, information than what I got from the first "coubselor!" Then, the coup de grâce, she also provided me with incorrect and unbelievably incomplete information, at least according to Bank of America and Citi Mortgage.
In sum, the HUD "counselors" and HOPE Hotline are a complete waste of time and, in some instances, serve as a detriment rather than a benefit. BEWARE!

It is disgraceful and waste of tax payers monies keep your home california hope and his counselors aren't able to assist stressed owners trying to save their homes the redundant paperwork required and then they all lose it or is wrong paperwork borders on harrassment and then a chosen few get assistance? I find this discriminatory

I have to agree that Hud approved counseling and the counseling provided by private firms is less than ideal. I recently interviewed with them and the help offered after a lengthy budget review....was sell my home. Before they can put their predatory paws on it. The firm that a Acquired my title is a major player in what my agent called toxic loans and a week into being late sent me info on foreclosure precedings. Hell I was surprised that the autopay I setup stillwas unusedbut other expenses came up making my balance too small to pay it. Numerous calls to the new lender gave me pause that they ranged from real sympathetic to.hard nosed debt collection. The messages were unclear and contradictory from customer service. The upshot of all this is a credit score of previously 770 has nosedived to 670. A repayment plan drove my mortgage from 1900 to 2600 for 6 mos and my days are phone calls to find solutiosave mens to this unforeseen dilemma with govt help that could me from predatory bank fishermen who either try to refi me modify te loan thru scads of paper and prayer. It just seems to snoball to worse and it is by design IMHO so this loan servicer can dictate and manipulate the situation that makes homeowner failure unavoidable. Prior to this I never missed a payment and my credit debt managable. Now ever path to prevent it is a nightmare of dead ends with bad solutions. If I fail on one payment the foreclosure Snowball rolls and picks up steam and my equity nearly 50% goes to the new loan servicer and they profit handsomely getting their investment and selling it at what I would. Bankers are morally heartless opportunists. We put money in them and they use i t to finance legalized theft and have. No interest in our welfare and offer1% in crumbs back.
