Stratford refunds for H.S. “diploma” program

Did you get a high school “diploma” from Stratford Career Institute or are you currently enrolled in its high school program? If so, you want to read this.

Last February, the FTC sued Stratford Career Institute for misleading advertising of its high school program. Today, the FTC announced that Stratford has agreed to return money to people it allegedly deceived.

According to the FTC, Stratford’s advertising led people to believe that a diploma from its high school program could be used in the same way as a traditional high school diploma, and would help them further their education and get a job. Instead, many found that Stratford’s “diplomas” were useless. They couldn’t use them to get accepted into college or to get a job. Now Stratford has to return money to those who enrolled on or after January 1, 2011.

If you enrolled in Stratford’s high school program on or after January 1, 2011 this is what you should do:

  • If you paid for the program in full, go to ftc.gov/Stratford to learn how to possibly get some money back.
  • If you have not finished paying for the program, you should receive a notice from Stratford letting you know how to cancel. When you get this notice, you must tell Stratford within 30 days if you want to cancel your enrollment. If you cancel within this time period, you won’t owe any more money to Stratford and you could be entitled to a partial refund.  You should receive this notice by February 14, 2017. Look for:
    • an email from Stratford with the subject line “Your Enrollment in Stratford Career Institute, Inc.’s High School Diploma Program” or
    • a message in the Message Center located in Stratford’s eService online student center with the subject line “Important Message About Your Enrollment”

This refund program applies only to those who enrolled with Stratford on or after January 1, 2011. For more information go to ftc.gov/Stratford. If you want to know more about avoiding a high school diploma scam, read this FTC article

Note: This post was updated on February 1, 2018 to say that “…Stratford has agreed to return money to people it allegedly deceived.”

Spent almost $1000 On this tuition only to receive $27 back on a useless course? How is that fair?

I'm so disappointed, they said it was it was an accredited High School, and I've paid over $600.00, I'm in my 60s and was excited about this diploma and enrolling in a community college, now ny dreams are shattered, its so sad how this world are full of deceivers.

I just want to let the people complaining about not getting a refund don't need to be that mad. They only refunded $26. That's the refund you get for being scaled out of $700+.

They need to start another lawsuit so we can get more of our money back, stratford still made thousands off us that's why it was so easy for them to agree to pay back $250,000.

Yes i agree . We should get at LEAST half of our money back .

So are you telling me my refund was 26.oo and that accomidate all the money i spent for my diploma and it was not accrediate are you serious?

Wow this is b.s. 2 years of studying and tests for nothing we should get all of are money back and plus, some for are time

Same here I paid in full

hello,Im very, very upset. I open my letter up, not knowing anything about this, I was in the Career Institute for over a year an half. I paid every month,an I got a check for $26.74 that is a slap in the face. This FTC isnt helping me out. It just makes me upset.

Same here wth is $26 paid almost $700

What will happen if some has been accepted in college with this certificate fake diploma. will their career will be valid?

You could ask the college about that situation.

What about people who paid in full before 2017. I got mine in 2007 paid in full

Only $26 ... im very sure they made more than that off of all of us at almost $700 a pop and we get $26 thats not even half of what we we lost.

I was enrolled in their High School Program, but option out after hearing about the problems with the school.I have not heard from them or received no refund! What can I do to resolve this?

Stratford agreed to return money to people who enrolled in Stratford’s high school program on or after January 1, 2011, and paid for the full program. Stratford also agreed to return money to people who were still paying for the program in 2017. If you paid for the full program, or were paying for the program in 2017, you can get more information at ftc.gov/Stratford.

Waiting to hear something from the school or someone.Paid. $250.00 for a diploma!!!

This course is scam they should be arrested i would like to know when they will return my money.

Why is their site, still up offering high school program????

I finished the program paid over 1000 for everything back in 2001 is when i received my diploma and never could get a job or go to college and im 38 now i want my money back

I had one hell of a time getting into colleges and finally landed one for my Associates and am currently wrapping up my bachelor's. My state has not funded me at all due to this Diploma and luckily I was still able to get my degrees. This is such a bad business model and makes people who actually want to improve or attempt to correct poor life choices look silly when they find out it's all for nothing. Thanks for this message and I hope it's resolved soon.
