DeVry refund update

As part of the FTC’s settlement with DeVry University for deceptive advertising, the school agreed to pay $49.4 million to the FTC for partial refunds to some students. The FTC plans to mail checks before the end of the summer to people who:

  • enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015;
  • paid at least $5,000 with cash, loans or military benefits;
  • did not get debt or loan forgiveness as part of this settlement; and
  • completed at least one class credit.

The amount of each refund will depend on how much a person paid to DeVry. The refunds will not be the full amount of money people paid.

The FTC will use DeVry’s records to identify students eligible for refunds. If you were a DeVry student between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015, you don’t need to do anything to apply for a refund. If you think you might be eligible, and your address has changed since you attended DeVry, you can call the FTC refund administrator at 844-578-2645 to update your address.

Note: On May 11, 2017, we edited this post to clarify that a student had to enroll in a degree program for the first time between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015.

Bridget, Thank you for all the information you have provided. Is there a reason why the refund is only for Bachelor's and Associate's degree programs? Why isn't the graduate school program included? Will there be anything done for individuals enrolled at DeVry/Keller Graduate School for the first time between Jan. 1, 2008 and Oct. 1, 2015?

The FTC refunds for students in bachelor and associate degree programs between certain dates are connected to the FTC settlement with DeVry. The lawsuit alleged that DeVry misled bachelor and associate degree students during a certain time frame.

i have not got the check yet how can i find out when i get it ?

I am qualified under all the requirements but I did not get a check, am I still able to?

I met all of the criteria and have not received a refund. I did complete the application online

Do we have to file a claim for this refund or is it based off the records of enrollment from Devry?

I went to devry in 2011 to 2013 and Iwas getting my Bachelor Degree, does that means I in that category.

If you enrolled at DeVry for the first time between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015 and meet the other qualifications you should be eligible for a refund.

Bridget Small...In your comment, you say enrolled for the first time, in any other statement I have seen; this is not stated. So, if I went to Devry in 2000 for my associates then went back in 2007-2011 for my bachelors; I don't qualify? If so, how is this fair?

To be eligible for an FTC refund, a student had to enroll  for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015, and meet other eligibility criteria.

Seems like I should qualify for a refund, how will I be notified?

I enrolled at DeVry for the first time in 2013, but had already completed an associate's degree at a private community college that has now been closed due to the decertification of the accrediting agency, ACICS. Does this mean I don't qualify for any refund at all of the thousands of dollars In tuition I paid with federal student loans? I haven't heard anything at all from DeVry since I withdrew in October 2014.

You don't say what you enrolled for at DeVry in 2013. One of the eligibility criteria for an FTC refund is that you enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015.  If you think you might be eligible, and your address has changed since you attended DeVry, you can call the FTC refund administrator at 844-578-2645 to update your address.

I paid over $15,000.00 meef all qualifications & received $124.70.
Are you kidding me??????
Where is my Money?

I spent over 10G, got 63.77. Unfair. Rip off!

I spent over 70k and got almost 600.... I would love if my debt was lower than 70k..

I got nothing and have a loan over 70k called they have the wrong address and will not update it so I get no check when I was to get 600 so everyone be happy you got something

Pretty sure what you received is related to how much you paid. I paid off over 55k and received $700.

I agree!!! I got $109 and just had to pay them 2570 in order to get my degree.

I agree while you attended back in 2000, i was within the scope from 2006-2010, and i don't even get compensated, and i too was promised that they would help me get a job, but here i am 7 yrs later a bachelor's degree with debt and nojob. I didnt even get a internship. I don't care about refund, but at least having my loan forgiven for false advertisement would be nice. DEVRY NEEDS TO RETHINK THIS THROUGH! OR WHOEVER!

I agree, I don't care about a small refund just FORGIVE MY LOAN FOR FALSE ADVERTISEMENT.

When would these refunds start? I meet all requirements and have moved but have put my new address on the Devry website before graduating this past December.

I went to devry between those years how will I know if I am receiving anything back and what percentage would it be. Should I call someone. Thanks

I was lied too & blatantly conned on getting a associates degree from these swindlers in 2009 for a astonishing $40,000+(interest included). My dean swayed/convinced me into getting so I could get my foot in the door of biomedical engineering without going for a bachelors. Couldn't land any work in that field(got a 3.6 gpa) whatsoever! Complete scam. Anywho I payed off my whole loan since I had cash in bank. Was $42,0000 + so I'll be happy to receive anything back

This is What I got a response from DeVry University. Is this true? DeVry Loan will be impacted of this cancellation.

Thank you for contacting University Accounting Service. We apologize for any delay with responding to your inquiry. Please see the below regarding DeVry settlement

DeVry™s settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) doesn't impact any federal loans. So, no account that UAS is billing is impacted.

My son meets all the criteria (From 2008 to 2013). He was never able to get a job in the field and is still unemployed. In any event, what is the percentage he will likely receive. He has paid approximately $60,000 out of pocket and owes an additional $8,000.

Bridget Small I am a little upset that to be eligible your tuition has to be a min 5000 where my tuition was under 5000 and I am not eligible and I think that is not right. Regardless of what amount my tuition is I should still be eligible. So all the people that tuition is not a min of 5000 is not eligible. I believe the FTC should refund all students that are eligible based on that timeframe when they were enrolled there. I am veteran and this is not acceptable. We got misled to go to Devry and not you say even though you went there you are not eligible based on your tuition amount. I believe we need to be compensated and not abused. This is not right

Hi Bridget, I had my devry loan forgiven. Will i still be part of the refund? I have almost 100,000 in loans.it stated the refumd is for thos that did not receive debt forgiveness is that true.

If you already got debt or loan forgiveness as part of the FTC's settlement with DeVry, you are not eligible for a FTC refund.

So, This settlement forgave the $562 I owed Devry directly... what about the other 38k i paid in tuition and still have federal loans for? Do i get a refund even though they forgave my tiny devry debt?

If you got debt or loan forgiveness as part of this settlement you are not eligible for a partial refund from the FTC.

We didn't have a choice, they just paid it. They did the same for me and yet Im still paying $45,000+ with no degree. They took the easy way out..paid off $500 on my account yet I still owe $45,000 in loans! They are a real scam and I wish we all had our debt forgiven! It's not fair!

I owe 47000.00 in tuition. The FTC sent me a check for only 470.00 which is only 1% of what I owe. I got the check today 07/10/17. So don't expect to get much if anything from the FTC. DeVry scammed us and lied to us, but apparently the FTC didn't fight that hard if all you get is 1%. None of my loan has been forgiven at all, in any way shape or form.

I feel your pain, I am 67,000 in debt from loans (also not forgiven) and I only got 500 back from FTC.

Did you have your loan forgiven through the FTC settlement or borrowers defense?

how did you get your loans forgiven?

How did you get your loan forgiven? I have student loans (federal) I am still paying, but meanwhile I took my degree off of my resume because employers think it is a joke.

Is there an official or tenative date when letters/refunds will be mailed to those eligible?

I attended DeVry from September 2008 to January 2012. I have not heard anything from anyone about a refund. DeVry used deceptive practices to get me signed up and in debt.

I have the same case. I paid $5,000 to DeVry Accounting Services. Is this eligible for refund?

To get a partial refund from the FTC, you have to meet the four eligibility criteria listed at the top of this blog. Please look at the eligibility criteria and consider the facts in your situation. The FTC will use DeVry’s records to identify students eligible for refunds. If you were a DeVry student between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015, you don’t need to do anything to apply for a refund.

How do you know what mailing address to use? My address has changed since I went to DeVry. How can I update my address??

If you think you might be eligible, and your address has changed since you attended DeVry, you can call the FTC refund administrator at 844-578-2645 to update your address.

I was eligible for a refund and did receive the refund. I received $350 check. Is that all I will get? I have $32,000 in student loans and still have not found a job in my field.

My check was mailed to the wrong address and i was just made aware of this whole settlement. Would i be able to have the check re sent to my actual address? The check was never cashed or deposited. I went from 08-2010. Im also having my paychecks garnished from these loans for the past year

You can call the FTC refund administrator at 844-578-2645 to ask about this. Listen to the message and choose the option to speak with an operator.

I attended Keller graduate school 2012-2013. Do I qualify for a refund?

Call the FTC number and press 0 to speak with an agent. They have a list of people who are getting refunds.

Which number did you cal to get this list? I called the FTC number and it only allows a voicemail
