FTC sends DeVry refund checks

As part of its settlement with DeVry University, starting today, the FTC will mail 173,000 refund checks worth more than $49 million to some students who attended the school between 2008 and 2015. Checks will expire 60 days after they were mailed.

The FTC used DeVry’s records to identify the people who were eligible for refunds. To get a refund, a person must meet all four of these eligibility criteria:

  • enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015;
  • paid at least $5,000 with cash, loans or military benefits;
  • did not get debt or loan forgiveness as part of this settlement; and
  • completed at least one class credit.

The refund checks will come from Analytics Consulting, LLC. The FTC never requires you to pay a fee or give financial information to cash a refund check. If anyone tells you they’re from the FTC and asks for money, it’s a scam. If you are eligible for a refund and have questions about the refund process, contact Analytics Consulting, LLC at 844-578-2645.

Please read the letter that came with your check. It has more information for you.

I applied for Borrowers Defence in May of this year. Now I'm doing my best to get this stuff from DeVry off my credit report. I went from a 674 score to a 515 score in on month right when I applied for a home loan.

It's a slap in the face. The average check is only $280 but I have $54,000 in student loans :(

Yeah my government loans are over $60K and the refund they sent me wasn't even 1% of what I owe!! It's a damn joke the refund checks they are sending out!! I am going to have to research how to get this debt cleared up! I didn't even graduate so I'm still stuck in a dead end job and not even making it paycheck to paycheck!

Same here! And to make matters worse I was unable to cash the check they sent! My bank told me the check wasn't good so I'm assuming this was a scam...

The check is not a scam. Your bank is mistaken.

You or your bank can contact Huntington bank, the bank that issued the check at 1-800-480-2265. That is Huntington’s customer service number. The agent that answers will be able to verify the validity of the account and the fact that there are sufficient funds available in the account to cash the check.

I got $910 back and I didn't even know anything about this! I'm satisfied!

Did you have to do anything to opt-in to this settlement? I don't recall receiving anything in the mail before and just read about this today and I appear to meet all the criteria.

They are so vague about how the refund amount is calculated. can you advise if you graduated and roughly how much you paid? Just trying to get an idea of what they're factoring into the refund.

I received $477 yesterday and went crazy trying to confirm its legitimacy, but I deposited the check today.
In addition, I acquired both a Bachelors and a Masters degree from DeVry and Keller and have over $130K in loans to repay. If I am already in an program with Nelnet to repay these loans, will applying for Borrower Defense have any negative affects on my original repayment plan?

How did you deposit the check? Did you go to huntington bank or your bank in which you have account?

The amount of your partial refund is based on the amount of tuition you paid to DeVry during the relevant time period, minus any refunds, scholarships or grants (including Pell Grants) that you got during that time. This amount of tuition you paid might not be the same as the amount you borrowed in student loans. For example, you might have also borrowed money to pay for books, fees or living expenses.

Got my check today 189.23 I went to DeVry this may make one payment. I have some Perkins loans. Need to file for borrowers defense.

Can't wait for my big 200 dollars.. Less than 1% refund. I mean I paid over 50k but thanks ftc for wasting my time looking into this case and all... would have made more money than this refund if I didn't know about it

How do you know the value of your refund?

call the number, press 0 and they will tell you. Mine is a slap in the face compared to the $50,000 I dished out to go there. Just praying for borrowers defense to take care of it I guess.

I agree the amount being refunded is grossly underwhelming, but it's better than nothing. How did FTC action waste your time? You literally had to do nothing.

I agree. I will call tomorrow and see if I qualify. Also, thanks for the info on the borrowers defense option. Going to pull it up and see if I may qualify.

$200 dollars you got to be kidding?

there are two parts to this loan FTC for 100 million and that Attorney Generals office for 2.25 million

49.4 million / 173k = $28 not $200 :(

$285.55

It is $283.24 to be exact lol

Each person's percentage of completion will determine each person's percentage of the $49 million.

That's incorrect. They are not just giving everyone exact same amount. It's a certain percentage of what you paid, which means if you paid $50k, you should be getting a lot more than someone else who may have paid $10k. Needless to say, I don't think they have disclosed the exact percentage. They do claim that it's supposed to give some financial relief. If their definition of "financial relief" is even $200 for someone who paid $10k then really shame on them all!

I seriously hope that there are a bunch of people of that 173000 that only took one or two classes. Although, We probably will not get more than $1000 even then. Oh well. I'll take whats given back to me with as much of a smile as I can muster. Thanks FTC for all the work you have done.

I received my check from the FTC today. I got 1% back of what I paid in tuition to DeVry.

spent about $25,000 and have a $9,000 loan,got back $450, yeah that helps.. heres hoping I can get loan forgiveness.. this is a slap for Devry, no real consequences.. I was hoping for maybe $5000 at least..

I don't think everyone is getting the same amount because everybody did not pay the same amount for their tuition.

I just received my refund today and it was more than $500 but I am still going to pursue other avenues to gain some of the money that I dished out, which was over $60,000 and I still haven't received a degree but I was constantly put on the dean's list :-\

I don't think this is true man. Think about all the people who went to devry for 1 semester and then dropped out.

173,000 people, a lot of them don't have 50k or more in loans. 173,000 people are being paid because there are a lot of people who attended Devry in those years. Doesn't mean each one of them went to the school for 4 years.

I'm $55k in debt, and I just confirmed they're sending me $384. So, totaling 0.69%.

I have $46.000 in loans and I received $369. Based on my current income, my required payment is $0 and debt should be wiped out after 10 years as a public school employee or 25 years otherwise.

Good Afternoon Bridget: I am a DeVry graduate class of 2013. I went there from July 2012 to April 2013 completed my degree with 36 credits from DeVry. I used federal loans and didn’t get a loan discharge. Do I qualify? M, class of 2013.

To get a refund, a person must meet all four of these eligibility criteria:

  • enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015;
  • paid at least $5,000 with cash, loans or military benefits;
  • did not get debt or loan forgiveness as part of this settlement; and
  • completed at least one class credit.

I called the number you provided. I’m getting a check.

For other folks, when you call press 0 right away. You’ll save a whole lots of time.

What’s the number

Is this refund only for loans taken out up until 2015??? I entered a bachelors program in 2014 and I just now finished this year!! Was wondering if the cut off is 2015 or did they calculate it for the students that attended during the time frame, but still attending. Kinda confused. At this point, I owe like 50,000

The partial refunds the FTC sends are based on how much tuition a person paid (up until November 2016) minus any refunds, scholarships or grants (including Pell Grants) the person got. The amount of tuition you paid might not be the same as the amount you borrowed in student loans. For example, you might have also borrowed money to pay for books, fees or living expenses.

Hello Bridget. I am curious, about the second portion of the settlement. Not so much the first half, I received my check but I am more concerned about the debt I owe. How will I know if mine will be excused or not? Do I qualify automatically since I received a check from the FTC?

The FTC settlement with DeVry provided some students with partial refunds, and some students with debt and loan forgiveness that came directly from DeVry.

You say you got a partial refund check from the FTC. If you were eligible for debt and loan forgiveness that came directly from DeVry, you should have gotten a letter or email from DeVry by the end of January 2017.

i attended devry from 2009-2013 i have not been contacted about anything and I do qualify. I met all those requirements. i need information on how to apply for the refund? thanks,

If you are eligible for a refund and have questions about the refund process, contact Analytics Consulting, LLC at 844-578-2645.

I just called and I've been on hold for over 15 minutes and still on hold. The music wont stop playing. No one is answering. I am just trying to see if my name is on the list.

Call back. I had the same situation. Today someone immediately answered.

Will I get an email confirmation?

The FTC will use DeVry’s records to identify students eligible for refunds. If you were a DeVry student between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015, you don’t need to do anything to apply for a refund.

The refunds are being sent by postal mail, not email.

So I attended Devry University from July 23,2012 to March 3/07/15 and used student loans to attend the university and apparently I did not qualify but according to your criteria I do qualify. Am I missing something. Because I have fellow students with my same situation and they qualified. Been trying to call but no one answers the phone.

How do they know what address to send it to. I've moved 3 times since I attended DeVry

If you think you might be eligible, and your address has changed since you attended DeVry, you can call the FTC refund administrator at 844-578-2645 to update your address.
