FTC sends DeVry refund checks

As part of its settlement with DeVry University, starting today, the FTC will mail 173,000 refund checks worth more than $49 million to some students who attended the school between 2008 and 2015. Checks will expire 60 days after they were mailed.

The FTC used DeVry’s records to identify the people who were eligible for refunds. To get a refund, a person must meet all four of these eligibility criteria:

  • enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015;
  • paid at least $5,000 with cash, loans or military benefits;
  • did not get debt or loan forgiveness as part of this settlement; and
  • completed at least one class credit.

The refund checks will come from Analytics Consulting, LLC. The FTC never requires you to pay a fee or give financial information to cash a refund check. If anyone tells you they’re from the FTC and asks for money, it’s a scam. How do they know what address to send it to. I've moved 3 times since I attended DeVry

If you think you might be eligible, and your address has changed since you attended DeVry, you can call the FTC refund administrator at 844-578-2645 to update your address.

What was the final percentile used to determine the amount?

Please read the letter that came with your check. It has more information for you.

Someone let me know if you get more than $200 . I'll wait. This settlement was a complete joke. The school needs to be shut down .

More lawsuits should follow.. But in the meantime file a borrowers defense against repayment against devry

I'm supposed to be getting $450ish. I didn't write down the exact amount. I graduated with my bachelor's in 2011.

I got $921 back and I filled for borrowers defense as well. It's free so it doesn't hurt to try.

Where do you file for borrowers defense if I should ask?

I just got my check today and it's more than $200.

I received $397.70, but ive also been religiously paying $300/mo for loans that total over $50,000. Im going to look into the borrower defense forgiveness app.

Hi, I was never contacted. Does this mean I was not eligible? Is there a way to check if you were eligible?

The FTC will use DeVry’s records to identify students eligible for refunds. If you were a DeVry student between January 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015, you don’t need to do anything to apply for a refund. The DeVry refund update lists the eligibility criteria the FTC used for refunds.

I meet all 4 requirements and I was told by the FTC I was selected to be a part of this lawsuit.

$200 worth of compensation? Wow great job FTC.

Where would I go to make sure you have my most Current address on file to send this check?

i am a parent who is paying a private student loan currently (great Lakes) when my son attended Devry in 2009/10 on top of federal loans which were borrowed and still my son can't find a job in his field. What other recourse do i have regarding these loans?

Your son may be eligible for a partial refund from the FTC.The DeVry refund update lists the eligibility criteria the FTC used for refunds.

I'm so with you on this topic. We have the same company (great lakes)...looks like we can do our own law suite against DeVry.

I would say that yes it is nice to get something, but the settlement is unfair that the people with private loans from the school were being wiped out completely, while the rest of us get a few hundred dollars. I already have the states attorney working on the case, but the school acts like the student is at fault. I wish I could take more action. Maybe a class action lawsuit might help does anyone know how to get one going.

You may not be able to pursue this settlement any father, but you could include us in a the next one that affects all the same people. Such as the violation of not being allowed to all the online information after we have completed the course. This is a direct violation of outdated laws in the FERPA laws. You can ask to get the information opened back up at anytime, but only for a limited time. If they do not reply to your requests within a certain amount of time they are in violation. They have failed many of my requests in the past while I was attending.
About the settlement it seems they will give you according to what your payed the school. Some will get more and some will get less. This is my understanding of this settlement.

@klrade Completely agree.. More word that this school is fraud. Lots of class actions... For now file a borrowers defense against repayment against devry. Take 2 hrs.

I would like to update my home address

If you got a refund are you eligible for debt forgiveness?

well maybe you can contact a lawyer to bring a civil suit against the school I agree that 200.00 cannot even pay the interest on the loan most students have a least 40000 in debt and no job in their field. But also the attorney general has a suit against them as well for 2.25 million so you may be eligible to receive from both

This lawsuit should have been worth over $800 million if 173000 students who paid at least $5000 were affected. What a sham.

More like a couple billion. File a borrowers defense against repayment against devry.

How would I know which address is on file? I just recently updated my current address with Devry.

1%

Read through these comments. You'll figure it out ;)

I am no longer at the address when I attended DeVry. How can I ensure that I get the check?

Your existing balance with Devry will also be waived along with this refund ? Is that correct?

No, that is not correct.

The FTC is sending partial refunds to some students. The FTC is not providing loan forgiveness.

Under the FTC settlement with DeVry, some students got loan and debt forgiveness from DeVry.The FTC settlement with DeVry required DeVry University to forgive and cancel the entire unpaid balance of all private student loans DeVry University made directly to students between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015. The settlement also required DeVry to cancel $20.25 million in debts some students owed to DeVry University for things like tuition, books and lab fees. If you were eligible for loan or debt forgiveness from DeVry, you should have gotten an email or letter from DeVry by the end of January 2017.

I was miss lead by DeVry representative also about my education at DeVry Institute of Technology. How come only students from 2008 to 2015 get a refund? I graduated from DeVry of Institute of Technology on February 1993. I never got job offer in my field,as it was promised to me by their salesman with 99% chance of landing a job. I return to my state of New York the city of Rochester. I applied for a job, most company in my state does not recognized my degree. They did not know about DeVry at all. I was really surprise ,I felt very bad for my degree apiece of not thing. I waste my time and money. I should get some of my money too

If we are receiving a check, do we still qualify for loan forgiveness?

The FTC is not providing loan forgiveness.

As a result of the settlement, DeVry forgave some students' loans and debts. If you were eligible for loan or debt forgiveness from DeVry, you should have gotten a letter or email from DeVry by the end of January 2017.

I meant, are we still eligible to apply for Loan Forgiveness through federal student loans. Or does this payout make us ineligible?

I don't have information about that.

$49,000,000 divided between 173,000 is barely $283. I am not banking on this. Keep paying your loans. DeVry is a joke and were pros at stretching to get every single dollar. I would like to think we would get something, but I am not sure we will see much of the money.

My husband & I both attended DeVry during this time frame and meet all qualifications set forth. We have received no communications on this matter, despite earnestly seeking out information and answers. We are drpwnomh in debt from DeVry and Keller Graduate school!

How do you find out the amount of the check?

Call 844-578-2645. I did and the lady who answered looked me up and told me.
