FTC sends DeVry refund checks

As part of its settlement with DeVry University, starting today, the FTC will mail 173,000 refund checks worth more than $49 million to some students who attended the school between 2008 and 2015. Checks will expire 60 days after they were mailed.

The FTC used DeVry’s records to identify the people who were eligible for refunds. To get a refund, a person must meet all four of these eligibility criteria:

  • enrolled for the first time in a bachelor’s or associate’s degree program at DeVry University between January 1, 2008 and October 1, 2015;
  • paid at least $5,000 with cash, loans or military benefits;
  • did not get debt or loan forgiveness as part of this settlement; and
  • completed at least one class credit.

The refund checks will come from Analytics Consulting, LLC. The FTC never requires you to pay a fee or give financial information to cash a refund check. If anyone tells you they’re from the FTC and asks for money, it’s a scam. If you are eligible for a refund and have questions about the refund process, contact Analytics Consulting, LLC at 844-578-2645.

I received a check in the mail yesterday is this legit

I received a check last Saturday. I thought the same thing but it’s legit !

did anyone received a letter from DeVry about loan forgiveness on Jan,2017 or later?

I didn't receive anything from DeVry and when I called them to get more information I was given the FTC number.

I never received a check. Is Keller included in this settlement?

No, students of Keller graduate school aren't eligible for a partial refund from the FTC.

How do you find out if your loan through DeVry can be forgiven?

The FTC settlement with DeVry University required DeVry to forgive and cancel the entire unpaid balance of all private student loans DeVry University made directly to students between September 1, 2008 and September 30, 2015. The settlement also required DeVry to cancel $20.25 million in debts eligible students owed to DeVry for things like tuition, books and lab fees. If you were eligible for loan or debt forgiveness you should have gotten a letter or email from DeVry by the end of January, 2017.

If you think you should have gotten a letter from DeVry, but you did not, you can report that to the FTC at

I attended DeVry from 2013-2014 full-time in a degree program, but have not been contacted and have not received any loan forgiveness or refund. I should be eligible for a share of this settlement. Is there anything special I need to do to get some of my money back?

The FTC mailed partial refund checks in July 2017. If you believe you are eligible for a refund and have questions about the refund process, contact Analytics Consulting, LLC at 844-578-2645.

I filled out the application for the Borrower's defense in July of this year. I received a call from Greater Lakes my loan servicer who advised that I was now late on my payments. They had no idea that I had applied for the borrower's defense and had not put my loan in forbearance. Who should I be contacting to get a status update?

To get an update on the status of your application, you could contact whomever you submitted your application to.

You can talk with your loan servicer about loan repayment options, like a forbearance.

Bridget, I am sure you answered this question before but please share again. This is a partial payment will there be more in the future or the check I received is the only one I will get? And how was the money divided up with the students?

The amount of your partial refund is based on the amount of tuition you paid to DeVry during the relevant time period and up until November 2016, minus any refunds, scholarships or grants (including Pell Grants) that you got during that time. The amount of tuition you paid might not be the same as the amount you borrowed in student loans. For example, you might have also borrowed money to pay for books, fees or living expenses.

My thoughts on the borrowers defense is really disappointing since a former devry dean is now watching over the borrowers defense applications..imagine that'... for profit schools buying seats in the government...

So since this forum is basically pointless now... Has any one heard back from the borrowers defense claims???

I filed my borrower defense claim October 2016 and I am still waiting. I doubt anyone has gotten approved.

Suzane, have you heard anything from them saying your loans have been put in forbearance while they look over it since you filed in 2016? Or is it just the being approved of loans being forgivven or not because I have heard it can take anywhere from 12-18 months or so.

Hey FTC. Thanks for the check that expired yesterday. And I really appreciate how easy it is to get a hold of someone about this. The number you provided is total BS. Its just a recording telling me to come here and there is absolutely nothing relevant here. You send refund checks that expire in 30 days and then hold on to them until the last minute to ensure that they cannot be cashed. CLASSY! Keep working in my best interests.

Please call the number again and listen to the entire message to hear your options.

What happens if you miss the void date on the check that was sent to me, how do I receive my refund share for this settlement action. Refund information..

Please contact Analytics Consulting, LLC at 844-578-2645 and listen to the entire message to hear your options.

Forget what you got from the checks... or this pointless FTC refund... has anyone heard back on a borrowers defense claim??

Nope, I submitted my form online, called 3 times and resubmitted it via email. I have yet to hear anything back. Started this back at Feb-March

My refund check was sent to an old address, I called the 800# back in Aug. Was given a claim # and told that I would receive my check in 8 weeks. Called back again after 8 weeks and then was that the call center was just responsible for processing checks and that they didn't know when I would get my check that I just needed to hold my horses! 12 weeks has come and gone, and I'm still waiting...Frustrated!!!

I called The Department of Education barrowers defense line to see again if they had my application and I am glad to say that 6 months later they finally see it in their system. The number should anyone be interested is: 8552796207

hello hello again... Was wondering on the"Improved Borrower Defense Discharge Process" ??? on how everyone sees it??? I have a feeling this is bad news for everyone.... I feel as that us Devry Grads that were lured in by there false advertising should get total/90% relief... Just going there at the time of the FTC settlement case should make us qualify for something? Being tricked in for something that is false... against the Law on Education?? also..Has any Heard from the "DOE"

I started winter on 2006 and graduated Feb 2011. I have not heard anything about this until now. How do I find out if I qualify for this?

I moved since attending the school I am pretty sure I never go the check.

I meet all the criteria for a refund for devry i haven't received anything

Hello! I have received the check long ago but I’m getting ready to file my taxes for 2017 and I’m wondering if there is going to be a 1099 or other type of form being sent out soon? Thank you.

I attended DeVry for a year. I haven't received a refund check at all. Where can I check to see if I'm supposed to be getting one or where it is?

I really wish another claim could be filed. So many of us that graduated with BA or BS went back to Keller or DeVry for a graduate degree because we couldn't obtain employment in our field. They made it so much easier to go back to them instead of another college because there was not an entrance exam. I guess I should have known better.

Do I need to need any information for tax purposes if I received a refund check.

The FTC Refund Check came with infomation stating that you should file a borrowers defense against devry. Go to the website and search borrowers defense. Spend a good 5hrs researching Devrys lawsuits and another 3 on filing the borrowers defense form.

That is your only chance at getting federal government loans forgiven.

How do you check on your refund? I never received one, I’m also moved to a different city.

I finally submitted my Borrower defense application last week. Hopefully we all will see our loans forgiven for their decptive practices. If you have not submitted your application yet, I would do so now. It's very easy, just fill out the information, and make sure you you give a lot of references to the lawsuit. Good luck everyone!!

I was scammed by a company United Legal Center, who said that they can forgive my student loans from Devry University, which i attended from 2003 to 2007. The Federal Trade Commission suspended the company and i lost 2000.00. I trying to get the money back that was lost.

You can report that to the FTC at The information you give will go into a secure database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

The comments you put here on the blog don’t go into the law enforcement database.

I received a refund check just this past week. The check is dated July 5, 2017 and says that I need to cash by September 4, 2017. Clearly I am past the date to cash due to this being sent to the wrong address and the postal service barely delivering it to my new address. Is there something that I can do to get the check reissued to me to the correct address?

You can contact the refund administrator, Analytics Consulting, LLC at 844-578-2645.

Update guys: I applied for Borrowers Defense on 3/23/2018, and received an email from my loan provider today, 4/27/2018, saying my loans are now in forbearance because of the application I submitted. So it only took about a month to find out about this. Hope this helps, and good luck!!

The US Department of Education has information about the Borrowers Defense to Repayment and other repayment options for people who have federal student loans.

I'm hoping this forum is still being monitored. I was one of the recipients who have received a refund check back in July 2017. After receiving the refund check, I learned about Borrowers Defense and was going to submit the letter I received along with the check as apart of the documented evidence submittal. Unfortonately after moving, I am cannot seem to find it and believe it may have been accidentally thrown out.

My question to the FTC is: does there happen to be anyway to obtain a copy of the letter that was attached to my refund check? Or might there be any way to receive some kind of confirmation that the FTC investigation deemed me as eligible for receiving the refund?

Any insight or assistance anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!

You could contact the FTC's refund administrator at 844-578-2645.

@Bridget Small

based on this lawsuit everything was alleged? Not facts that they did deceive... obviously they settled with the lawsuit... but after the ED withdrawing investigations on School like Devry... make is seem like there is no hope for relief, AKA Borrowers Defense just worthless...
Im sad that this lawsuit did not find or push for more...

Did nothing for the students...debt for life.
