Scams affect all of us

How many of us get scam calls? Maybe it’s someone saying they’re the IRS. Or a debt collector. Or tech support. Or a so-called friend in so-called trouble. And they want you to send money. Sound familiar? All of us are targeted for scams. Every one of us. Which is why we created this video to make exactly that point – fraud really does affect all of us, in every community. And we all can do something about it.

Over the past couple of years, you might have seen some of these amazing people who’ve been willing to share their story.

  • Bryan Noyes, a veteran in Maine, told us about the debt collectors trying to collect debts he didn’t recognize.
  • María Juárez nearly sent thousands to settle a supposed lawsuit against her – until her son realized something wasn’t right.
  • Dr. Carolyn Bowers just wanted to get off the phone with a persistent caller, and so gave her Social Security and bank account number to get a new Medicare card.
  • A company promised to pay Dorothy Council’s credit card bills, so she paid them – only they didn’t pay her bills.
  • Two people in Pablo Colón’s family got calls claiming to be about a family emergency – and Pablo warned people about the scam on the radio.

Please share this video in your community. And, if you ever think you’ve spotted a scam, please tell the FTC. Because we know that talking about a scam helps protect you and those you care about from the scam.

I had gotten a call from a customer care service, but I didn't know since I didn't have the phone with me at the time. I don't know why they called since 1) I don't use their services, and 2) customer care never calls unless called to.

Although I hardly use my phone as an actual phone, I only call people in my contacts. I didn't bother to set up a password to check the voicemail, and I put my number on the Do Not Call list.

Just received this one.

“Headquarters which will get _______________ 24 working hours and once again expired after that you will be _____ under custody by the local cops as there are ____ serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 502-713-1710 I repeat 502-713-1710 thank you…”

That is definitely fake. Any government office will NEVER call you.

Also I don't think they would say "by the local cops"...

This is the third call I received within a few months. I also have visual voicemail so it types what is said on the message. I really hope these people get caught. It appears they have been reported more than a few times on this board alone.
will get expired in the next 24 working hours and once it get expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 256-620-7535. I repeat 256-620-7535. Thank you

Just got two of these calls. I called from my office phone- they said they needed the phone number I received the call from. I would not give it to them. They called from 786-485-1644.

I get this voicemail from a female machine voice: And the ones that get expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 817-471-2634. I repeat 817-471-2634.

same message received today from 1-484-404-0144

I received this voicemail today, 01/24/2018, and am quite sure it is a scam as I’ve never been in trouble for anything in my life. The message came from a number in Arvin, Ca. and reads as follows: And once that gets expired you will be taken into custody by local cops as there are four allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 661-451-1066. I repeat 661-451-1066. Thank you

I recently received the same message:

Once again expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are ____ serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 707-666-7598 I repeat 707-666-7598 thank you.

I get the "... custody by the local cops ..." one periodically. The most recent from 913-839-7310 and have filed a complaint.
Why, with the technology we have in this day and age, can these criminals get away with this after reports have been filed for a considerable time???

Message left: ...which will get expired in next 24 working hours. And once it gets expired, after that you will be taken into custody by the local cops, as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so we can discuss this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 941-445-8138

I received the same message twice today. “Quarters which will get expired 24 working hours and once again expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are 4 serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is 386-626-8113 I repeat 386-626-8113 thank you…”

I've received the same message with a different return number; 818-570-9861.

I receive this call almost daily.

I received a call yesterday, and I answered it, thinking it was someone I know. It was a foreign speaking woman and I couldn't really understand Her, but She asked me if I had a computer and dumb Me I said yes. She mentioned some kind of a refund so I said no thank You and hung up.

I keep receiving these on my voicemail. The I have visual voicemail so it types out what is said on the voicemail. I want to share this because maybe you can pick out the poor grammar and can see this is totally fraud ..

From the headquarters which will get expired in the next 24 working hours and once it get expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 352-450-6919. I repeat 352-450-6919. Thank you.

I am getting the same "custody by the local cops" message now. FYI the number referenced is 470-208-7861

This morning got a call saying “Grandma it’s me” I could barely hear them and they kept saying Grandma it’s me and I need help. Voice was young sounding. Flags went up immediately and I yelled at them about how disgusting they were to try something like that, and they hung up. My friend’s elderly parents lost thousands to this scam a few months ago. Be Careful!

I got a call that said there was something wrong with my tax documents and if I didn't call a number, they would call the "cops." They also wanted me to call before any legal charges are put into action. I'm not sure if this is a scam call.

I just received a call from 607-595-0725 saying, under custody by the local police as there are 4 serious allegations under your name at this moment we would request you get back to us so that we can discuss this case before taking any legal action against you. THIS IS HORRIBLE. They need to be stopped.

Like many others I've received a voicemail(s) of a female robot saying "...which will be expired in next 24 working hours. And once it gets expired, after that you will be taken into custody by the local cops, as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so we can discuss this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is..." In the last two months I received seven calls, each with a different number. Here are all but one of the phone numbers given: 607-595-1450, 518-772-0021, 607-595-0161, 716-304-9380, 914-363-5617, & 818-539-6404.

The same woman's voice to call my cell phone number, two times in one day today.
Add this number to the block list: 716-254-3004

Just got the "HQ. There are 4 serious allegations against you. This expires in the next 24 work hours. If you don', local police will take you into custody." Was a New York robot call from 631-412-7082. I tried to call. Recording put me on silent hold for several minutes stating an Agent would be available shortly. Finally just disconnected.

Was called on 8/1/18. Told I'll be taken into custody and to call 646-682-0913. I live in Phoenix.

I just got the call about the four serious allegations too. Phoenix area number was 1(908)356-7371

"24 working hours and once it get expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment. We would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you. The number to reach us is 210-714-3061. I repeat 210-714-3061. Thank you."

Received call from 14072584021 saying local cops will be called if I didn't return call and take care of 4 cases

Received a call from 1-662-685-6665 (Southaven, MS) at 11:06 am 10-24-18; a portion of the robocall was recorded in my voicemail indicating there were serious charges against me, I would be taken into custody by federal officers, to contact them at the number referenced above immediately.
