Getting your money back from Western Union

Did you lose money to a scammer who had you pay using Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017? If so, you can now ask for your money back – and you have until February 12, 2018 to file your claim.

Earlier this year, we told you about the FTC’s settlement with Western Union, which agreed to return $586 million to people to settle the FTC’s charges that Western Union hadn’t adequately protected people from fraud, and didn’t properly discipline problem agents.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is handling the refunds – or “remission,” as they call it. Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you already reported your fraud loss to Western Union, the FTC, or another government agency, you might get a claim form in the mail. The forms were just mailed today and will come from Gilardi & Co, which is the company DOJ hired to handle the claims. You can file your claim online – just use the Claim ID and the PIN that are on the form you get in the mail.
  • If you didn’t already report your loss, or you don't get a claim form in the mail, go online to file your claim. Start at FTC.gov/WU to get to the claims website.
  • If you’re putting in a new claim, or changing the pre-filled amount on the claim form you got in the mail, you’ll be asked for documentation. Upload – or send copies of – the receipts or transfer send forms you have, and give as many details as you can remember about the transfer. If you don’t have documentation, you can still complete the form and give as much information as you have. DOJ will use the information you give them to try to validate your Western Union money transfer.
  • The claim forms ask for your Social Security number (SSN). That’s because, before they can send you a check, DOJ is required to see whether you owe money to the US government. For that they need your SSN. That’s why we’re suggesting filing your claim on the secure website.

You do not have to pay to get your money back. Don’t pay anyone who says they can file a claim for you. And nobody will ever call you to ask for your bank account or credit card number. It’s free to file your claim form, and you can only do it online or by mail. Find the claim form and the only real address that accepts claims at FTC.gov/WU.

And then: patience. It will take DOJ up to a year to validate all the claims it gets and return money to people. Check FTC.gov/WU for updates.

Did you use Western Union to send money to a scammer and then fill out a request for a refund?

If you asked for a refund, and you have a question about your refund paperwork, you can call the refund administrator at 1-844-319-2124.

why do all claims need to be verified before paying people ? Once a person has been verified, shouldn't that person receive payment ? How close is the DOJ to sending out payments ?

I tried to transfer $10,000 plus fees at a Western Union office to my wife's family in China. Western Union charged my account and then immediately called me back on my personal phone and told me they would not make the transfer because they thought I might be a victim of fraud. They did not, however, return my money. It has now been nearly a month. What do I do?

I sent money online through western union and they would not release it to the recipient and I.told them to cancel it. Now I've been calling everyday to get my refund back. It's been 1 month that I've been going through this. I'm disgusted by western union and I want my.money back. I've been told to send an email...send my bank statement and all that's done and still nothing

In february i filled out refund form. After sending it i got a mail from Gilardi & Co. that the form is received. Still waiting for a answer or the money since feburary 2018.

WHEN TO EXPECT OUR REFUNDS. I FILLED ALL NEEDED BACK IN FEBRUARY 2018 AND HAVE NOT HEARD NOR RECEIVED ANY REFUNDS SO FAR. I HAVE SUFFERED BIG FINANCIAL LOSSES AND NONE WAS RESOLVED SO FAR. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN CHECKS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO WESTERN UNION MONEY FRAUD VICTIMS LIKE ME ?

The refund administrator, Gilardi & Co., that works for the US Department of Justice, is working to verify the claims. This process could take up to a year. When the verification process is complete, we will post an update at www.FTC.gov/WU.

I had no knowledge of this going on. I lost a lot of money to a dating scam. I had to repay a federal bank after transferring 2600 when I was in the Air Force in 2007. There is more too.

Lost money in lottery scam I sent money thru money gram and Western Union the this year 2018can I get a refund

Some one picked up my money at WesternUnion and it wasn’t me so I want to know the bank that paid out my transaction

I was scammed for $1200 and I mailed in my claim as soon as I got it back in early 2018. How long will it take for me to see the compensation for the loss?

10 Month are nearly over. Any news?

Hello all, any news? The year is nearly over

I recently looked up unclaimed property from the state through my credit karma app. And this western union thing popped up saying i have until may to intercept my refund or it will be turned over to the state n i will then have to collect it from them. That being said they clearly know the amount im owed and clearly it can still be claimed but i dont have a letter or anything just the info from the site which told me the company and the contact info and that im owed $100 plus... oh and a phone # which i called and it just tells u to mail fax or email ur info to get ur claim but if all i have is the info from the site then is my screen shot enough because clearly they are turning anyone who hadnt responded over to the state...

That pop up about a refund from Western Union is not related to the FTC and US Department of Justice legal action. It sounds like a scam from someone who wants to get your personal information.

If you used Western Union to send money to a scammer, and you submitted a refund claim to the US Department of Justice, read more at FTC.gov/WU.

It is one year now they promised to send my money back to me one year I still did not receive it what is going on I keep getting the runaround from headquarters that is under investigation for one year please send me my money what do I have to get an attorney you can get back in touch with me you know how

The refund administrator, Gilardi & Co., is still reviewing claims. Gilardi & Co. is contacting people who sent in claims that are not complete, and asking them to send additional information.

They will not make any final decisions or send any payments until they review all the claims. When Gilardi & Co. finishes the verification process it wll post an update on its website.

You can get more information on www.FTC.gov/WU.

After almost a year since I submitted my claim, I just received feedback on my WU claim from the DOJ. The letter says I did not send receipts for the total amount that I claimed. This baffles me as not only did I send copies of receipts for the full claim, but I numbered each receipt and then created a summary worksheet by document number and provided this to them for easy reference. This means that either they denied half of my receipts or they lost half of my receipts. In trying to get answers, the phone number they provided in the letter for the administrator "should I have any questions" is simply a recording of all of the FAQ's and there is no option to talk to an administrator. This is frustrating - any suggestions?

The US Department of Justice hired Gilardi & Co to manage the refund process. On March 29, 2019, Gilardi & Co mailed letters to people to ask for more information about their claims for refunds.

Gilardi's website says the letters tell people their claims have one or more of these problems:

  • (1) they did not sign their claim
  • (2) they did not put their SSN or taxpayer ID on their claim
  • (3) they did not provide sufficient proof or documents to support some, or all, of the refund amount they claimed.

If you got a letter mailed on Marcy 29, 2019, you can send an answer by email to info@westernunionremission.com. Or, you can send a letter that is postmarked by April 29, 2019. The FTC has information at www.FTC.gov/WU.

My sister lost close to 100K she filed claim but now she received a letter stating that claim is too high and provide receipt which she does not have MCTN she has been running around from kroger to calling western union and they are telling her they sent info , they will e- mail and letter states last date is 29 th for them to submitt info. so how can we get this info from western union. she is senior and really went through lot of stress thru this scam because they were calling and threatening her. now she is having to deal with this provide details western union every different rep gives different info one says your name is there, other says they mailed, next one will say she will get it in e- mail is there any way prosecuting co. that is handling case on behalf of Government demand them to provide her info or to FTC? what can we do to get this info? we have recording of guys who called her, we have letter claim she won some lottery, but do not have MCTN receipt.

The Western Union website says you can request a receipt by sending an email to the company:

  1. Go to the Western Union Email Help Center.
  2. Click on Copy of Money Transfer Receipt from the list.
  3. Complete the form and click “Submit.”

Gilardi & Co. is managing the refund process for the US Department of Justice. The Gilardi & Co. website says the responses to letters it mailed out on March 29, 2019 must be postmarked by April 29, 2019. Or, you can answer by email. Send email to: info@westernunionremission.com .

The FTC information page is www.FTC.gov/WU. The Gilardi & Co. website is www.WesternUnionRemission.com.

I filed my claim before the deadline last year in 2018. Now I see the deadline has been extended to April 2019? Why? Not trying to be rude. And how much longer do I have to wait before I see something.

The deadline to file a claim has not been extended. The deadline to file a claim was May 31, 2018, and the FTC is not accepting new claims.

The company that the US Department of Justice hired to handle the refund process (Gilardi & Co.) has been reviewing claims. On March 29, 2019 Gilardi & Co. sent letters to people who filed claims before the 2018 deadline, to say there was information missing from their claims. The people who got those March 29, 2019 letters were told to postmark their answer by April 29, 2019. Then, Gilardi extended the deadline for people to respond to those letters to June 30, 2019.

Read more at www.FTC.gov/WU and www.WesternUnionRemission.com.

I am assuming this 2-month extension for responding to deficiency letters is NOT going to guarantee an additional delay of another 2 months in receiving a payment, right? Especially for those who did not receive a deficiency letter and have provided all required items? Sorry but we are tired of waiting!

Any advice on what to do if Western Union aided in a scam just a month ago? I was scammed and Western Union is claiming the money went to the correct person, but i have proof it wasn’t. Please any advice is welcome.

You can report that to the FTC at www.FTC.gov/Complaint, and to your state Attorney General.

We are being very patient about this claim. This occurrence stems from February 2015. This involves nearly $3000.00 thru Western Union Remissions. Updates would be appreciated please.

The FTC has information about the refunds at www.FTC.gov/WU. The refund administrator, Gilardi & Co, has information at www.WesternUnionRemission.com. In March 2019, Gilardi & Co. mailed more than 38,000 letters to people whose claims  lacked information. Those people were supposed to respond to the letters by June 30, 2019. The FTC, US Department of Justice and Gilardi & Co have not sent out notices about who is eligible for remission. You can check the FTC and Gilardi & Co. websites for updates.

What is the firm that handled this case? I spoke with them last year and was told by this time refunds should be sent out.

The refund administrator is Gilardi & Co. Get information about the refund process at www.FTC.gov/WU.

I just filed my petition online on the 5/27/2019 3:57:33PM will my claim still be accepted even it is outside the deadline?
Kind Regards

The deadline to apply for a refund was May 31, 2018. We are not accepting any new claims. You can report a problem to Western Union at  1-800-448-1492, and to the FTC at www.FTC.gov/Complaint. The information you give the FTC goes into a secure database that the FTC and other law enforcement agencies use for investigations.
