Getting your money back from Western Union

Did you lose money to a scammer who had you pay using Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017? If so, you can now ask for your money back – and you have until February 12, 2018 to file your claim.

Earlier this year, we told you about the FTC’s settlement with Western Union, which agreed to return $586 million to people to settle the FTC’s charges that Western Union hadn’t adequately protected people from fraud, and didn’t properly discipline problem agents.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is handling the refunds – or “remission,” as they call it. Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you already reported your fraud loss to Western Union, the FTC, or another government agency, you might get a claim form in the mail. The forms were just mailed today and will come from Gilardi & Co, which is the company DOJ hired to handle the claims. You can file your claim online – just use the Claim ID and the PIN that are on the form you get in the mail.
  • If you didn’t already report your loss, or you don't get a claim form in the mail, go online to file your claim. Start at FTC.gov/WU to get to the claims website.
  • If you’re putting in a new claim, or changing the pre-filled amount on the claim form you got in the mail, you’ll be asked for documentation. Upload – or send copies of – the receipts or transfer send forms you have, and give as many details as you can remember about the transfer. If you don’t have documentation, you can still complete the form and give as much information as you have. DOJ will use the information you give them to try to validate your Western Union money transfer.
  • The claim forms ask for your Social Security number (SSN). That’s because, before they can send you a check, DOJ is required to see whether you owe money to the US government. For that they need your SSN. That’s why we’re suggesting filing your claim on the secure website.

You do not have to pay to get your money back. Don’t pay anyone who says they can file a claim for you. And nobody will ever call you to ask for your bank account or credit card number. It’s free to file your claim form, and you can only do it online or by mail. Find the claim form and the only real address that accepts claims at FTC.gov/WU.

And then: patience. It will take DOJ up to a year to validate all the claims it gets and return money to people. Check FTC.gov/WU for updates.

The FTC has information about the refunds at www.FTC.gov/WU. The refund administrator, Gilardi & Co, has information at www.WesternUnionRemission.com. In March 2019, Gilardi & Co. mailed more than 38,000 letters to people whose claims  lacked information. Those people were supposed to respond to the letters by June 30, 2019. The FTC, US Department of Justice and Gilardi & Co have not sent out notices about who is eligible for remission. You can check the FTC and Gilardi & Co. websites for updates.

What is the firm that handled this case? I spoke with them last year and was told by this time refunds should be sent out.

The refund administrator is Gilardi & Co. Get information about the refund process at www.FTC.gov/WU.

I just filed my petition online on the 5/27/2019 3:57:33PM will my claim still be accepted even it is outside the deadline?
Kind Regards

The deadline to apply for a refund was May 31, 2018. We are not accepting any new claims. You can report a problem to Western Union at  1-800-448-1492, and to the FTC at www.FTC.gov/Complaint. The information you give the FTC goes into a secure database that the FTC and other law enforcement agencies use for investigations.

Dear Americans, I'm German, and since information policy at Western Union is not at its best I would like to inform you all that I only received a deficiency mail this week setting me a deadline at October 3rd. It looks like Western Union first went through all American claims and only now has started to remember the rest of the world. But as I said, my deadline is only 4 weeks. Concluding from the above said I'd guess that noone will receive anythig before 2020, as the administrator will have to check on all the other worldwide claimers' answers now. Though I'm really happy that there is anything like the Remission at all, I'm a bit disappointed at way things are dealt with. If you can't speak English or Spanish it must be really difficult to understand what is asked of you. Information about the Remission was noly spread via the German press in January 2018, about 4 weeks before the first deadline! I would never had got aware of the remission if the court had not sent me a link to one of the press releases. People outside America were obviously not informed by Western Union itself. But honestly I'm happy that you Americans have the possibility to have Western Union prosecuted at all. There is no such possibilty in Europe prosecuting Money Gram or RIA, which have the same security deficiencies!
Let's all hope for the best

No one in America got theirs either.

I filed my complaint Last yr, sent a message asking about it
When they sent me a email saying my file showed $0
When I. Reality I sent them over $6000 worth of receipts,,several times ,,,contacting the BBB Or going to court ,,one of the to

I'm still waiting for my refund. How much longer will it take?
ME. 12-08-2019

I have been waiting but nothing.how long does it take to get my money back . its almost 2 yrs. Now

I was told last week that they are finishing up with checking the claims since October was the deadline to send your letters back. Also we should be hearing something at the first of the year as in January or February.. Judge will need to give the order to release
the checks.

I filled out a claim to FTC.gov/WU on 11/18/17. I lost over $1200 being scammed and I have a pin and claim number that I received. They said it could take up to a year or longer. I think this is ridiculous for how long it's taking to get some of your money back! Starting to think it's all BS!

On March 11, 2020, refund checks worth about $153 million started going out to over 109,000 people who sent money to scammers through Western Union wire transfers. Learn more at www.FTC.gov.WU.

I received a check in the mail today, how do I confirm that this is a legitimate check?

If you have a question about your check, or your claim, please call the administrator at 1-844-319-2124.
