What’s up with the National Do Not Call Registry?

Is your number one of the more than 229 million phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry? Then you might be interested in the FTC’s just-released National Do Not Call Registry Data Book, which gives an overview of the Registry and complaints the FTC received at from November 2016 through October 2017.

Some of the highlights: Last year there were 7.1 million complaints to the FTC at, and the majority of people reported getting robocalls. The most reported topics were calls about debt reduction, vacation and timeshares, and warranty plans. Each state has its own breakdown so you can check out what is going on where you live, too.

The Do Not Call Data Book also shows that many of the calls reported at are robocalls. Just keep in mind that pre-recorded sales calls are illegal whether you’re on the Registry or not unless a company has your written permission to call you that way.

You can learn more about the Do Not Call Registry in our FAQs.

Are you already on the Registry and still getting a lot of unwanted calls? Odds are, many of those calls are from scammers. Check out our article on blocking unwanted calls to learn more about what you can do — including reporting them at When you report illegal calls, we take the phone numbers you complain about and release them each business day. This helps telecommunications carriers and other industry partners that are working on call blocking solutions. Your complaints also help law enforcement identify the people behind illegal calls.

Are there any state do not call lists that are legitimate? I see there is one for my state. Is this safe to use?

Does being on the national do not call registry prevent registered numbers from being sold by list brokers? I asked a caller how they got my number and was told they bought a list of people's names and numbers matching certain criteria. Shouldn't registered numbers be vetted?

When you add your number to the Do Not Call list, you should stop getting sales calls within 31 days. You still may receive political calls, charitable calls, debt collection calls, informational calls (from your airline or school for example), and telephone survey calls.

I just added my number to the registry. Do I have to do this again at the beginning of the year?

No, you don't have to register again. Telephone numbers on the Registry don’t expire. We only remove your number when it’s disconnected and reassigned, or if you ask us to remove it.

I recently had a telemarkerter tell me that the do not call list no longer existed and even it it did there was no way to stop him....

That telemarketer wasn't telling the truth. The federal Do Not Call list still exists, and you can add your number at

First, let me say that the FTC is trying to do something about unwanted calls. I have reported calls in the past to the FTC and the District Attorney's Office where the spam area code is from. Both times I received letters from the FTC and DA's offices and calls from those scammers stopped. However, the shear number of calls that I receive daily make this solution impractical. Think about it. If 1 person who posted here gets up to 55 scam calls a day, multiple that by millions. This isn't a simple problem with a quick simple answer. I too, wonder how they know what prefixes I generally call, sounds like someone is locking in on our calls. I can tell you that 6 months ago I switched from AT&T to Verizon and my scam calls have tripled. So it appears that there may be some carrier culpability even if it is that they are just easier to hack/fool. I do not answer calls unless they are in my contacts but that makes no difference in the number of calls that I get.

This do not call list is useless. I got a call and my caller ID showed I was calling myself!!! Calls can be traced if illegal activity is involved so why can't we use this technology to stop these incessant useless calls?

When will it actually WORK.!!!!!!!

please registry my number on your do not call list

Go to and register your number.

I am trying to register now.

This system is not working 6-8 calls a day.

If there is a "do-not-call list" it sure as hell isn't working!!
Must b a myth!!

I opt out to all type of unwanted/unneeded calls

They appear to be using Google Voice phone numbers locally for these robocalls, i wish either google or the govt could stop them

It's gotten to the point with spammers that I've blocked over 200 area codes on my cordless phone. Turns out spammers have upped their game by spoofing numbers that begin with my area code and prefix. As a result I'm forced to only answer recognized numbers. Hopefully people/companies that are legit and need to get in touch with me will leave a name and number on the voice mail.

I get calls all the time!

It will take the feds to FORCE the phone companies to stop the unwanted calls period.

I get calls all day long & do not answer if I don't recognize the busness or person but the same people keep trying to get me.This is annoying because it always happens when I am in a position not wanting to be disturbed I have registered a few years ago.Is there a limit that you are registered for?

Telephone numbers on the Registry do not expire. We will remove your number only when it’s disconnected and reassigned, or if you ask us to remove it.

I've done everything recommended including being on the DoNotCallList and still get at least 10 calls everyday. If I don't recognize the number, I ignore the call.

When will it work?

The truth about scammers is that they will never follow the rules to start with. They couldn't care less if you were the National Do Not Call List or not. The truth is that only legitimate telemarketers will abide to this, while scammers and spammers never will. Also, they know that they can get around such a thing with either spoofing their numbers or even using an autodial to get through to you. The truth is that nothing here is really foolproof in stopping them. Until the FTC becomes much more proactive and catches all the scammers, such calls will never end, because they know that they live in such safe havens where they believe that they will either never get traced or know that where they live, the punishment is nothing more than a slap on the wrist for them as they will be doing it again once their punishment is done. Even if you were to say to them that you will report them for their call, they will probably be laughing at you in claiming how they will never get traced or caught.

I have had this service and not had this service and to tell you the truth, the results were the same. No matter what you end up reporting the nimber but it does absolutely nothing excet make you work harder. What a pain that our own government can donwhat they do but won’t stop this issue.

I hate these un known callers!!!!!!!

what is the reason??????????????????/

Add me please 828xxxxxxx

Go to to add your number to the Do Not Call Registry.

tired of getting calls from unwnted salepeople.

why is it that when I click on sign up for the do not call registry I get a blog page. Makes no sense and is extremely frustrating. I feel I am being forced to read someone' s opinion to get to the registry.

here are calls i got 701 274 1296 661 338 5109 631 760 1830 631 740 9273 877 593 4574 954 938 0383 800 339 1051 201 3898 7001 631 591 9262 631 576 8419 940 329 1296

I get several unwanted calls daily

Most of my Robo calls are from Police headquarters, Hospitals, Doctors and private businesses in my town. I am afraid NOT to answer. We really need to get something done about this!!!!!

FTC is a joke Do Not Call Registry is great for getting more calls. Spoofing caller ID should be a federal Crime. Bridgette quit regurgitating the "company" line. Lets start giving the phone number of the head people at the FTC as our call back number, maybe that will get something done.

I don’t like annoying marketers or scammers calling me.

Writers should read their letters before sending and correct errors or misstatements. I stop reading comments when is spot misspellings and crazy thinking. And the Government is doing something - but it's the Bad Guys who are doing the Bad Things.

I've pressed both your suscribe and review buttons, and I get the same window with nowhere to sign n or to register.

Go to to add up to three phone numbers to the Registry.

If I’m number is listed publicly because I am in sales. Does listing my number on do not call registry matter? I have been getting as many as 7 calls a day regarding VA loan qualifications and student loan forgiveness. It’s a hassle because I try and answer every call, when a majority of them are robo calls or sales calls it’s nerve racking !

These people no longer function. If I were president I would candle whole department, everybody it is a complete waste of government funding to fund this agency as they are completely and utterly useless

I became my elderly uncle's POA and went to the post office to have his address changed to mine in order for me to take care of his bills. Then the phone calls began. I believe that the US Post Office sold my name and address to these useless scammers.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone with The Do Not Call Registry. On one hand, yes, many of the numbers I reported have stop calling, then on the other hand, many have not. I asked my service provider to put a block on these numbers, so far, it seems to be working. By the way, my provider is AT&T. Thanks.

It's useless to complain about the calls because either the caller blocks their number or sends a garbage number that doesn't belong to them.

if you have received all that money from the people who are harassing us why don't you give some of it to us consumers that have had to deal with all the b.s. for so long

HaHa...DNC is now totally useless. There is no way to report abusers because the name and numbers on caller ID are all fake. I received a call that had my next door neighbors name and number. Do these fools think that ANYONE would buy anything from an unsolisted caller? AAAAArggggg!

I am registered on the do not call list and I am still getting a lot of unwanted calls. A lot of times the phone rings and no one answers the phone when I answer.

I'm on the list and get a half dozen calls a day. No way to stop it. Not enough time to report these numbers. Block one, another pops up. Such crap.

I place the scam caller on speaker phone, and then get behind my drumkit. I then play as LOUD as I can until they hang up. I called one number back several times and did this until they finally blocked ME.
