Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I received a call regarding the issuance of a warrant for my arrest due to suspicious use of my social security number. The woman left a voice mail requesting that I call 530-214-9204 to speak with a Social Security agent for details in the warrant. The caller ID showed that the call came from 530-298-7505. Just for kicks, I called the call back number and a woman answered saying Social Security Administration. I terminated the call at that point. I am sure this is a scam as the call came in on my cel phone.

I've received yet another call from a woman with a very heavy Asian accent I identifying Hershel's herself as "Jennifer" from the Social Security Administration. She had my name & wanted my SS# to confirm my identity, otherwise they were going to discontinue my benefits. I laughed & said please go ahead & discontinue my benefits because I won't give you my information. She hung up. The # called from was 800-200-2946. This came in about 10:30 am on 6/21/19. I called the number on this page to report it, but they don't take these calls I guess.

I received 2 missed calls, one from +1(510)112-7811 and the other from +1(510)112-7821. Both left the same automated message that said they were from the Department of Social Security and that they have suspended my Social Security number because of suspicious activity. I am currently on the phone with this websites listed "Fraud Hotline" number hoping I can talk with someone to be sure this is actually a scam.

I got a call today from a robot saying something about fraudulent use of my social security and a warrant for my arrest. I just hung up because I know it has to be BS. It's from a Seattle phone number. 206-438-7286. It said to press 1 to talk to an officer but I wasn't about to do that because I thought it was a crock. Although for a second it did freak me out when I heard the words arrest warrant

I received 3 calls total 2971717 a woman left a voicemail upset about her social security no longer available. I assumed she was referring to SSA Funds. She then accused me of harassing her and said she will report my number . I asked her not to report my number. Harassment was not my intention. The call then disconnected. The following 2 numbers called my land line and first had what I had thought to be an official social security recording I pressed either 1 or 5. The number 4082667559 has an answering machine with a woman reciting a friendly greeting with a surname. The number 6232333163 is a Textnow number. The male and female both with accents had similar reports about my SSN, a vehicle in Tx, criminal activity and a raid by US Marshalls along with accounts in my name, money going back and forth. $ 1.5 million dollars, 22 lbs of C17H21NO4 with blood either in the raided home or car. So bazaar ! Well, I traced and recorded both calls.

Getting scam call from phone number 510-112-7850 from someone impersonating an official from the Social Security Administration. I decided to play along and gave him a phony name and SS# and he proceeded to tell me 20 bank accounts had been opened in my name and he needed further info from me to do his investigation. At this point I told him I am fully aware of this scam and going to report it and he abruptly hung up. My phone has been ringing all day from variations of this phone number

I've noticed that some people have the same complaint as I do. I received a call from a Texas area code stating that my social security number was used in criminal activity and they would start legal proceedings immediately if they didn't hear from me. The number calling from 210 - 741 - 8288. I did not call back or respond in any way but it was a robocall not a human being calling my number and leaving messages.

And what, exactly, is the FTC doing about any of this?? Cause right now it looks like nothing. End these!!!! I’m thankful I’m of sound enough mind not to fall for these, but my mother, who is undergoing cancer treatment and is often in a fog thanks to mess, would easily fall for these.
