Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Sick of scammers
July 01, 2019
I received a call today from 1-844-209-1246 claiming to be the social security administration agent saying there was fradulent use of my ss#and that did I want to proceed with blocking my number. I just hung up. When I called the number back, a recording comes in saying I have dialed a wrong number. I'm sick of these scammers. They need to get their own life.

i just got the second of two texts from this number thus far. text number one had short links (i’m in InfoSec, and I will not click on links from unknown numbers, i will not answer unsolicited calls, and will be submitting a freedom of information act request for all these numbers that are either spam bots, robocalls that are purely purposes to gather info, and less if the number is unknown. Any one else get texts from this number in spanish? In Puerto rico? . I always make sure to verify that numbers that i do not recognize are legit, but unsurprisingly, usually they are part of a scam just as stated by the other reports. +1 (833) 265-1874 which is apparently the IKEA number or their VoIP dispatch for Puerto Rico, but it is not a 787, or 939 area code.

Robo call from 800-772-1213 today 7/1/19 at 3:34 pm saying there's an issue with my SSN and if I didn't follow up then a grand jury or a magistrate would indict me. Told me to push "1." I pushed "1" and a guy came on and I told him I was going to report them to the consumer fraud division of the AG. He said they were real and I asked him for his name. He said "If you're going to report it, why do you need my name?" then he hung up on me.

First time my mother was contacted on 6/27/19 from this number 915-209-7188 and a voicemail was left that it was the Social Security Administration and there was legal enforcement action against her social security number for fraudulent activity and was told to call the number back. Another call was received on 7/2/19 from the same number. I called the number back and a person answered with an accent "Social Security Administration". I told them the message received and that I needed to know the nature of the call. The person put me on hold and then came back on and told me that I needed to give them my name and social security number. I told them that if there was an issue, then they would have my name and ss# in order to get the issue resolved. The person then said that it was a different department that called me and in order to get me to the correct department, I should give the info to him and he would transfer me to assist me. After refusing to give any information again, he then hung up on me. Please be aware that this is real and the persons are very devious and will try to confuse and trick you into giving your confidential information. Especially warn any senior citizens in your family and community.

I received a call today from this number claiming my SS number is going to be "suspended." July 2, 2019, I received 4 calls throughout the day that my phone picked up as 'scam likely' and the message said that they were representing the "St. Terminy Social Security office and they need to inform me that my number has been linked to fraudulent activities and I need to call them back to avoid any legal situations that may occur from this activity." If you call them back the number and phone system seems legitimate , even stating that if you ever think you are being scam to contact a certain number or website that they provide you with.

This particular scam call is almost humorous, it is so bad. But, it obscures the real business of SSA. I applied for SSA. Today, I got a phone call with CallerID 1-617-227-1929, Boston, MA. The person calling said they were from SSA, and had a few questions. They asked for me to recite my full name, which I did, and then asked for my 10 digit SSN, which I would not provide, since they called me. She said, fine, let me send you email with a number to call me back. That unsecured email arrived. GMail looks like it has properly confirmed that it is from SSA.gov. It included the callback number 866-964-7317 ext. 29299 Why would that be gmail, and not the secure inbox at secure.ssa.gov, where I filed my application? None of the SSA pages say whether SSA will ever contact me by phone. They just point to this one scam page. My application status says that it is being processed in Boston, MA. This looks so legitimate, but for all their security, it doesn't seem like this is being handled the way it should be. I should have received an email notification to go check my secure inbox. The only SSA phone number I can find online is 1-800-772-1213 I have called that number and I am waiting for a callback.
