Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

210-239-7084 has called several times over past few days with the "social security number cut off" scam. I believe it was the same outfit who called me a few months ago. When I called them then, we got into an argument before the guy finally hung up. When I called just now, reminding them of our prior conversation, the guy testily asked "What do you want?" when I said to stop receiving the calls, he said "We are going to call you every day until you die." So there's that.

Just to make sure if someone's receive phone call from 1 800 391 2787, then disregard. I pressed 1 in order to be connected to their "agent" and I heard the foreign accent. I guess SSA should send us an official letter if there is something wrong with our SSN.

The scammers that tried with me, wanted me to belive that my number was suspended due to leagle actions. I needed to contact them before serious actions were taken. Haha haha. These people don't realize that huge governments departments use the mail to start contact. Leagle proceedings are done with certified mail. If your going to make a living being a scammer be a smart one. Do the research.

We, as a routine practice, do not answer calls that have no name on the caller ID. I received a call identified in the voicemail as the Social Security Fraud Division instructing me to call 1-832-460-4227 ( Soc. Sec. Fraud Hotline ) to discuss a pending fraud investigation involving me. If I did not call, the fraud investigation against me would proceed. This sounded bogus to me.

Got a call from +1 888 064 8436, didn't answer since I'm at work. It left a robo voice mail similar to others here, that my SSN has been suspended due to some possible suspicious activity and to press one. Left no other call back number or clarification on what the activity was. Won't bother calling back since it sounds exactly like what other commenters received.

I have been bombarded twice a day, everyday for the last week from one of [or more] of these Social Security scammers. I do not answer my phone, allow the call to go to voicemail … the message is the same every time: "Legal Cell Social Security Associate. Since I missed the call, I need to push 'one' and the Concerned Dept. will get back with me. If I do not return the call, my social security number will be permanently blocked" Each time they call, a different untraceable toll-free number is used. Here are two of those numbers: 1-800-577-3380; 1-800-869-3196. I failed to write down the first 4. Hope this helps others.
