Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I am receiving repeated calls from a recorded message stating that there is "suspicious activity" using my SSN. I have recently been the victim of identify theft and feel this is just another scam. The number I'm being asked to call is 1-866-3312. I doubt this is a number used by SSN, therefore I do not respond. Any insight that can be shared for others who have maybe had the same message would be appreciated. Be aware!

Got a call on my cell today with a recorded message saying there was fraudulant activity associated with my ssn! Came from (561) 807-9018. Asked me to call them back within 24 hours. I have not called. Tried to call my real social security office but could not get a human on the line. It disconnected me asking me to call back later. Not sure what to do about this...

I got a call from 8007821213 today.he introduced him as officer Kevin Smith with id badg #irm6278 from Social Security office in Texas and they find out 22 bank account is under my name and my SSN. He said he is calling to help me take my name out of that case and I should follow the process. He said they are seizing my bank account and before that want to secure my money in order to do that I should buy gift card sothy can track me and find out it's real me not someone who is using my account. He made me take $5000 from my Welsfargo saving account and then made me buy 5 gift cards from Target store then asked me to use my debit to buy 4 gift cards from Best Buy in total value of $2000. Then asked me to give the number on the gift cart and pin codes to verify my identity. He also asked my SSN and DOB to verify again. He was very serious and said if I dont do that I'll get arrested. After I gave him all the gift card information he said my identity is verified and his higher level officer will call me to set an oppointment at my house to give me ducumentation of this case and what should be done next. But nobody called me. I caled 911 and the customer service for Bestbuy store and Target store butnone of them helped me and I lost my $7000 that I saved for school.

I am receiving incessant calls and an automated voicemail messages from 347-479-1626. The callers have heavy accents and claim to call from the Social Security Administration. The background noise is riddled with chatter and what appears to be old fashioned typewriters. They provide false names with the title of officer. Please be cautioned by these characters!

Also received a robo-call from 9 different numbers with the same area code (209), an area which I have no relations to. Same as what others posted, saying that my social has been suspended and there is a warrant out that I need to call to clear. Blocking the numbers seem to do no good as they just spoof with new numbers, so just blocking as the calls come.

11/04/19: I received a call from 800-882-3441, from "Officer Jennings". The voice sounded like a text-to-voice call. It said there was fraudulent activity on my "social security" (didn't specify benefits or number) and my "social" will be deactivated. I needed to "press 1 now" to speak to my "case manager to resolve this issue". I immediately disconnected the call. The number didn't appear on any of the 3 phone number look-up sites I checked.

‭Got a call from 1 (800) 918-5318‬ claiming my ssn was going to be suspended. If you call the number back (which I did by accident trying to copy the number), it’s a “you have been selected for a carribean cruise” type number (probably also a scam).

I just received a call from 214-634-6935 (per my caller ID). He informed me that he was calling from Social Security Administration and that there has been suspicious activity on my social security number. Not only am I sure SSA would not just phone me, he had a very strong foreign accent! I merely told him that I'm close to a nearby SSA office so I'll just go and check with them. He hung up without another word, and when I called back immediately to see who would answer, it was a recording that said it's a disconnected number. Really sad that we have to put up with these sleezy criminals.

Today I've been bombarded with calls saying is the SS Administration from these 2 numbers (Texas Area codes) 1-210-783-0165 1-903-345-7824 the first one was a live person and when I called back they actually answered the phone saying "Social Security administration how can I help you...." The second number was clearly a RoboCall - the number comes back as non-active if you try to call. I can't believe these people are getting away with the impersonation, not that anyone would believe what they say, but just the fact that they are letting them do what they do....
