Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Received call this morning, caller identified himself as a SS agent, Smith Anderson Wesley. Gave Federal ID Badge #3156219AC Said he was calling in reference to a Texas car accident having to do with a car stolen, or bought under my SS# and bank info. He recited the last four numbers of SS # and birthdate. Both correct. Mistakenly acknowledged that. Then asked how many bank accounts, and for account number. Said if do not cooperate, will be arrested. Did not give out any of that information. Continued to threaten arrest. Asked if ever been to Texas. This is the info he gave when threatening arrest: Texas case ID number 7010 warrant 537542 Hung up. Googled the name above and the phone number call was from: 714-240-5887 It comes up associated with a car lock company.

It turns out that 1-877-772-3794 actually is a Social Security office.in California, but DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT!!! Go to the social security web site, find the main SSA phone number, call them, and verify whether the number you were given is legitimate or not. DO NOT give out information until you've verified the number. Just my opinion.

I received a call from 801-735-6090 (which happen to be the first six digits of my phone number, which they seem to do). It was a computerized voice saying that my social security number was involved in a money laundering scheme in Texas and that if I ignored this 2nd attempt then my social security card would be cancelled. I pushed one to talk with someone and I could barely understand her. I asked what it meant to have my social security number cancelled. She said my name (first, middle initial and last name) and asked to confirm that. I repeated my question about cancelling my SSN. She seemed offended that I was "taking a tone" with her. There was quite a bit of background chatter (like a call center) and when I mentioned that she said that they have a very large office. We weren't getting anywhere as I kept asking what cancelling my SSN meant so I asked her for a number where I could call her back. She gave me 1-866-563-9310 and I hung up. Searching for that toll-free number brought me here so I thought I'd add my experience. It's amazing that there are organizations that feel like it's their right to try to scam people out there.

Got a voicemail from 281-769-5381 (Katy Tx). It stated they needed for me to get back with them and if I do not call, a warrant of arrest will be issued to me. When I finally called back, I was told my SSN has been used fraudulently in Tx. This guy was able to confirm my address and previous addresses. He asked for my last 4 but I refused to give it to him. He gave me a name of the officer in charge, Mark Henry and his badge number which is SSA1137. I asked him to stay on the line while I get SSA on the other line. I put him on speaker so he can hear the SSA. As soon as he heard the automated intro from SSA, he hung up. These fools are getting bold! I just hate to think that there are individuals that they're able to scam.

I called and asked for the operators ID with his number +1 (609) 269 4737, he said his name was Officer Jason Austin and his ID was 24016. The first form of ID he asked was that I verify my phone number, I didn't, I just asked how could my SS be suspended if I am not a recipient. He asked for my number again and said this was he could check why I received a call, I said, the message said my SS was suspended and I am asking you a general question. HE HUNG UP. :) Beware That's scam
