Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I just received a call saying my social security number had been used. They said I rented a car in Texas and smuggled some drugs over the border. The person had a heavy accent. He said his name was Paul Wilson. He gave me these numbers- DC7010 and 537542. We received the call from number 1-615-444-5693. After a check online, the names for that number were different. They did not come back to Social Security Office number or a Paul Wilson. I did not give them any important information. I believe the phone number was spoofed.

Information to help you - the everyday, hardworking citizen, when receiving these calls. Because you have done nothing wrong: I just received a phone call on my cell from 1 (504) 469-1011 - my phone said this number is a Metairie, LA number. And automated voice tried to make it sound very serious and ominous, and told me to drop what I was doing and press one to reach the "concerned party", so we could get this "issue" resolved. No elaboration on the issue, or who the call was intended for. So I played along. I get transferred to someone with a thick accent who says his name is Sam Wilson and he works for the Social Security Administration. I asked "Sam" where his office was located, he said he is in San Antonio, Texas. He seemed to not know why I was transferred to him, but proceeded to try and get my information. He asked for my name, DOB, and SSN. I asked him if he minded if I recorded this conversation. With slight reluctance, he said that was fine. As he was talking, I was googling his name, and the San Antonio Social Security office. That's where I found this blog. So I said - Sam, I am not comfortable giving you any information until you can tell me what this is about. He countered with, "Well in order to do that I need your info". So I hit him with - Well, Sam, I've been looking up your information, and the first page I've found says: firstly, this is a scam for identity theft, and I believe the article actually mentions your name...Would you like to comment on that? Brief pause, then: "Thank you ma'am, have a nice day." Hung up. End of discussion. Always protect yourself, no matter how professional these people try to act, or whatever scare tactics they use. No one should be asking for your personal information unless they can tell you upfront why they require it, and what the situation is. Also, ask why you have not received anything in the mail. Or request a formal letter stating in writing what it is they are trying to contact you about. Be your biggest protector - be smart, be sharp, and outwit these guys in an instant. Thanks for letting me share my experience, I hope it helps others in the futures.
