Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

My friends gentleman was on an oil rig as well went by the name Dickson Grey he moved very fast and asked her to send him itune cards so he could continue to talk to her since he had run out of text minutes. His phone number went to a strange call center and he had a little girl named Amanda. Well to prove to her that it was a scammer my friend and I got the same guy to talk to me and we payed it thick like he was doing to her aand as soon as he asked me for iTunes cards for minutes we called him out on it. My friend was heart broken but we had enough info to turn him in!

I “met” a man named Scott Lorenzo when he sent me a friend request on Facebook. He said he was working on an oil rig off of the coast of Mexico, he was a widower and had two children that were in boarding school. Everything was going great, I really felt a connection to him, I could even say I was starting to fall in love with him. After about a month, there was an explosion on the oil rig. Since he was the contractor, he was responsible for the man who got hurt, as well as getting the replacement parts. I don’t have the money, but he still talked with me! He knew I was selling my house, so I believe he just strung me along, complementing me, professing his love for me, and promising me the life I always wanted! I had doubts, and in the end I never gave him any money. He cursed me out, said I was wicked, and told me that I would be responsible for his death. I can’t believe he wasn’t real, he felt more real to me and some of the people I knew in real life. So, I’m heartbroken and sad that this person didn’t love me and was out to scam me from the beginning!

Has anyone been conned by a guy with the following name? Sam Choi, Young Choi, or Sam Young Choi? His full name is Sam Young il Choi. He claims to be an attending physician in the pediatric unit in Boston Children’s Hospital and MGH. The American Medical Association has no record of his medical license and he pries on Women on online dating sites such as OkCupid. He asked for money but the moment you ask him to return the money he disappeared and refuses all communications. I want all women who have been involved with this person to report it. He has a shaved section on his left brow. This indicates Punk status. He golfs regularly but can pay anyone back. He does not drive his own car. Stop giving him money.

September 06, 2018
I posted a few days ago and mentioned that I think I am being scammed. Perhaps my comment didn't post because it was not seen as “helpful". I really want people aware of this, not because the guy was trying to scam me but because there is something that happens when you know it is happening but you try to convince yourself that there is a possibility that you are wrong. No matter who you are and what you look like we all want to hear compliments and told that we are loved. This isn't the bad part. All these things are true in a sense and deep-down people know it and that's why they continue to play into it. Where it cuts off is when you feel like you need to pay for these affections. I recently encountered an online love interest who was incredibly handsome and all his pictures were like model shots. We talked on the phone and I just kept telling him "I just want to be friends" I just wanted to get to know him. I fantasized just about friendship. He told me he was moving from Houston to Signal Hill and was just looking to meet people. I was cool with that. I planned to introduce him to my friends that worked in his industry that might be helpful getting him work and I told him we could workout together at the gym and that was it. He then began to send my pictures of him and asked me to send them back to him so i did. He complimented me on my looks and told me that he felt a connection with me. I continued to tell him "that's great but I just want to get to know you better and be friends first" One day he sent me a picture that was well a little hotter, not naked hot, but just him without a shirt on. At first, I was "Wow!" then relaxed and stayed focused with my intentions and told him "that's quite an inspirational picture, I can’t wait til you get here and we hit the gym together" as we continued to chat he kept getting frustrated with me and eventually began to tell me how I was the "one" for him and that I am already in his heart. Again, I told him that I am looking to be friends first. Finally, one day I received a text and he was asking me for a favor. In his text he said he needed a iTunes gift card. I told him "Are you telling me you NEED music?" He said yes, he needs music and movies. I told him "Do you realized how strange this request is?" That it’s weird asking someone you have never met to buy you a gift card? I said how much? He said $150 but not to buy it all on one card that he needed two cards one for $100 and one for $50 and to take a picture of the codes on the back and he would be able to process it. The next day I said "No" I don't feel comfortable doing it. He then said he understands and it was OK. The day after that I get another text that says "Have you decided to buy the iTunes card for me?" I told him I want to talk to him and called him a few hours later where he continued to tell me how I am "in his heart" and he needs the card. That night, after thinking about what to do, I then took a piece of paper and made a sign that says "Hi Andrea" (that was his name) then I took a picture of myself holding the sign in front of me and I texted it to him telling him that I wanted him to do the same and to make a sign with my name on it and hold it in front of him.........I haven't heard a peep from him since. So, what I am assuming is that the poor handsome guy that this scammer is using to trap others into giving him money has no idea that he is being "pimped" out. These photos may have been collected by the internet or from when he asks people to send him their picture. I just hope that he is not using my picture to scam a person.

I also was scammed out of 2500. Same story as what I've read.on this site. Only his oil rig was off the coast.of Alaska and the money was for his daughter in Italy to take care of his mom who was in the hospital, sent me a pic of her on a gurney in a hospital gown. His.name is Patrick Johnson but he spoke with an.Italian accent. He had me send money orders to his.'agent' here in Atlanta. My bank actually told me they would not release the.funds.to me and that this was a scam. I wished i would have listened to that Bank Manager. I left there in shock. First he needed 10000. I told him I didn't have it and he's practically in tears and he doesn't know what he's going to do. Then he says 8000 and I said no. He finally begrudgingly settled for the 2500. I did tell him at the time if he was scamming me, I'd hunt him down like the dog.he was. He.laughed nervously and I've never heard from him again. I found.him on POF.

He was on rig in Gulf of Mexico then got transferred to a rig off the coast of Nigeria. He claims to be a chemical engineer. Said wallet got stolen and needed iTune cards. $40,000 (of mine & my family n friends) later, he has expenses for repairs that I won't cover. So now that I won't pay, he is giving up and going home! I suppose to vidit him in Lyon ( I live in England)., but then he dsid that he had to go to Morocco to build becsuse of work and in January off he went. After few days he texted me and said that he had a carcacciden and needs some money. I refused at first but he was so convincing and I was thinking that I am halping a frend in difficult situation. To cut the long story short he got over £2000 from me. When he asked me for money in August 2018 I have asked him for ID and he emailed me the french ID card for Philippe Naval. I have few photos of him plus that ID card. How can I find out is Philippe Naval is real person or imposter?

I met this dude on Whisper. We started talking and exchanging photos, and eventually started talking on Google Hangouts. He told me his name was William Stones, and that he lost his girlfriend to cancer, and was a single father to a boy. Confused he was in love with me within a week. Then, he started to ask for gift cards for his son’s birthday, and other things. Told me if I got him gift cards he would pay me back double. I called him a fake scammer and he showed his true colors. I am pissed because I sent photos and told him personal things I was going through. Whoever this scammer is he has to be using photos from a guy that posts or posted a lot because we exchange many photos. I never sent any money, but my feelings are hurt.

I met a beautiful Belgium woman on match 45 days ago, after 3 weeks of talking she was in love and wanted to share her life with me. Now she's asking me for $$$ as a loan to conclude her businness, she needs $159k but she says anything I can give/loan her will help. She said she'll pay me back in 30 days with interest. I've never seen her only pics. I asked for a copy of her European passport, DL and address in San Francisco..she got very irritated she said if we are in love why do you need my passport, DL and address. She claimed to live in San Francisco and will move to my city in a few months. But now based on everyone else's experience looks like she's a scam artist. Thank you.

I am toying with a dude like that right now. He claims to be from Australia and to be an gemologist, stuck in Turkey. Supposedly from RI, but he can't leave his project and his CC and bank account is blocked for international transfers. First he asked me to help him pay equipment fees so the equipment isn't pulled off the project (14K bill), than he asked to login to his bank account and see if I can make a transfer to my account... (LOL, money laundering - thinking of reporting this to the FBI), now he just wants a $400 iTunes card to buy international calling card. He has the worst Aussie accent ever, can't pronounce a "th" and refers to himself as a Kiwi... that's a total no, no for Australians, Kiwi's are from New Zealand. It's just fun to reply with totally innocent questions and see what comes next. I am a very realistic person, there is no falling in love based on text messages or emails. Any of that stuff is just an invitation to start playing. This dude Riccardo Gassman is taking the cake and it's fun to take him for a ride. A friend ran into a similar situation with a guy called Anthony Mastroianni.

I have a supposed American who speaks with broken English claiming that I am his wife. He was going to ask me for $3000 for his dad which was down from $5000 and now wants iTunes gift cards from me for $200 to fix his cell phone while he is deployed in Afghanistan and he has been there for 7 years. He quickly called me his girlfriend and now he calls me his wife. His name is Alfred Mark Layton and he found me on Instagram and is listed as Alfred Mark on there. I am unable to find him on any Google or people searches and the broken English was a giveaway to me but I am in love with love so I opened up to him. Now he has my full name and address. His email was invalid to iTunes so they initially tipped me off to this as a scam. I hate that I am in love with love so that I can protect myself. My mistake. There went $400 though. :(

Got contacted on Instagram by a guy claiming to be the actor, Ryan Reynolds. He had created a fake direct message account and even used the real Ryan Reynolds’ profile pic and similar IG account name. Real Ryan Reynolds is vancityreynolds and this guy claimed to be vancityreynolds13. Fake Ryan messaged me and expressed interest in wanting to know me. He gave me a private email and told me to chat with him on Google hangouts app. Within a few days, he started professing his love and saying that he and Blake Lively were privately divorced because she cheated on him. He said he had 9 weeks of filming left and then planned to come be with me. He also said he didn’t have his personal iPhone with him, and therefore, couldn’t contact me by voice. He got all insisted that he was the real deal and that he wanted my love and trust. I went a long with it at first but then several things occurred and I knew it wasn’t him. First, his grammar and spelling was not that good. Second, when I asked him to tell me about himself, he took his movie history Wikipedia and copied it changing only a few words here and there. Third, he sent me a bad photo shopped picture of himself holding up a sign that said that he loved me. Fourth, he said his connection was really bad where he was out in Japan and said he needed me to get him a steam wallet card in order to help him with the connection. He claimed that he had no credit card with him that was the only one I could help him. I got him a $50 steam while I gift card but turned him down when he kept insisting he then wanted $100 Amazon gift card. I had started to sniff out that something wasn’t right about this and I was not going for it. When I asked him what he was doing he said he was staying at a hotel, but then couldn’t give me a phone number to contact him out. Fifth, he claimed that he was in a movie sessions feel me. But the news at one point clearly show that he was out with Blake Lively on her premiere for a simple favor. Sixth, he asked me to help him because he had $200 million in a security briefcase and he needed to have it sent to my home here in California because the hurricane over Florida was impacting his security company and he had no way to go from overseas to the US to get grab it from them. I turned him down on this and told him I wasn’t going to do it because I wanted to contact an attorney to make sure this is legitimate. He got insistent that I not contact anybody about it because he wanted to to be only me and him. He also tried saying that he had a chase bank account that he could prove to me he was the real Ryan Reynolds and he would give me the login and the password and everything. I declined because that was incredibly scary to me and I didn’t want another person’s bank information because I had a feeling it was illegal. Seventh, Ryan Reynolds, the real Ryan Reynolds, had arrived in Florence Italy on September 17 to start filming with Michael Bay for a Netflix movie called six underground. The fake Ryan Reynolds told me that same day that he was in Japan because it was an emergency that he had to do. Seventh, Ryan Reynolds, the real Ryan Reynolds, had arrived in Florence Italy on September 17 to start filming with Michael Bay for a Netflix movie called six underground. The only thing I lost out on with this was time, a $50 steam wallet gift card, and yet I feel stronger for realizing that this can be placed back in my own control. All of this lasted for about three weeks. I hope none of you meet up with this person because he is definitely a fake and Using a well-known actor to do this with. I wish there was a way for me to report this to the real Ryan Reynolds so that he would be aware of it.

I have met Jane Marsh from Raleigh/Durham, NC. She found me on Plenty of Fish. She is pretty. A little too pretty to be real to me......She has professed that she cannot stop thinking about me. Anyway, she said she had to go to Turkey for sculptures that her mother had already had paid to have made. Her mother passed away recently. She went and we communicated via Hangouts. She was gone for a week. She said she was detained at the airport by Customs for not having the taxes paid on that shipment. She said the contacted the US Embassy rep at the airport and was told that it was a business issue and that she should get help from home. She has not asked for money. However, when I suggested that she contact her mother's accountant, she said that she had not completed the authorization process of her mothers account. She said that she is required to be in country to be able to do any transactions. She actually wanted me to confirm that the account was active. All this just seems a little strange to me. She said that she has to pay $3200 in taxes before Turkish authorities will release her passport back to her and allow her to leave the country. It is just very odd to me. Does she mistake me for dense and gullible??? Well, not this one!

I was contacted in October by the same Jane Marsh and yes, she sent pics and I also that she was very good looking and thought it was too good to be true. She gave me the same story about going to Turkey for sculptures. She supposedly just went two days ago so I've been waiting for the sob story that she needs money. Glad I saw your message her so I know I was right to know this was a scam.

Ha! She tried to get me caught up too, but I sensed it was a scam. I did enjoy our text messages, though, and her pics were hot too. It's easy to see how someone can get caught up in it. I wonder if the person who's photos she's using is even aware she's being used as part of this scam.

Hello Almostgotcaughtup, Quite often scammers use female porn star for their fake profile picture.
