Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

Just wanted to post a user name LAsingleMale on POF who says hes a widower with a daughter. He says hes from Belgium but listed living in the Bronx. Like Ive been reading in previous profiles these peple ask for money after chatting for a week he asked to borrow $5000 to pay of for a bid at a construction project so he can get it. He claims to be an engineer..lol. He alleges that he paid off his sisters home and it left him low in cash. His wife allegedly passed from breast cancer. He only wants to chat on Google hangouts and thats because he has a broken ear piece on his phone..lol. Then if you say you cant help him he starts to say hes embarassed for sharing his issues and I make him feel bad..and hes soooo in love.lol. Be careful if you see him he is very handsome and cunning. He also creates certified diplomas most likely photo shopped saying he belongs to a national engineering boarda but no license on the certificate and hes not listed as a member..a pure liar. So I asked why are you on POF saying you seek a woman of high caliber..lol with a good heart?? All the right words which spells you want someone with money and have compassion so you can try and use them. Hes going by the name Darren Robins. A ultimate certified LiAR!!!! I get to walk away without losing money....that website is full of them and I believe its a ring with girlfriends who help them this is how they pay their bills and live the high life. Watch Out!!@

Met guy POF; gave me photos all are valid; gave me valid address for himself and his grandmother. He is a contractor; got his last contract before retirement; travels often; widowed to woman he met in college; does not type in proper English; spoke on phone and accent is difficult to detect a particular country; hung up without saying goodbye. Only child, parents died of different illnesses. No children. Says abducted while in UK; contacted me for several weeks using other people’s phones then was given a pda from a contact in UK. Had a rental crane to repair and got most money from a business person but needed another $1100. He eventually got the rest from an old buddy, Says he’s coming to visit me after first phase of six month contract completed. I do question his authenticity, He has stopped texting past few days. Nothing for me to do but wait and see. Couple friends think he is scammer. I’ve been reading this site and thought I should post in case I can help with someone else’s situation. I don’t feel bad about any of it but wish these kinds of scams would be caught since there is so much technology. Hope this helps...

To have offline conversation get a GOOGLE VOIP phone number that you do not have to pay for, but the caller gets no ID about you. The call comes to your cell, via VOIP. The moment someone speaks of flattery, love or money - STOP and BLOCK. Met a guy on Adventist Singles who tried to scam me, I played him out until he sent documents copies via email, that actually landed him in Federal issues that may charge him. Unless you can play and not let your heart get involved, don't play. End the relationship and block all forms of communication and report to this site and Federal sites ASAP. No matter how desperate or in love they declare, cut them off and block all communication.

I thought I would never be scammed but I was. Was corresponding with someone from England. He seemed wonderful, then he told me he had a very deadly brain tumour. I believed him. I sent him thankfully only $225 Canadian. But Its $225 I will never see again. He said he needed emergency surgery but had to be on a waiting list. He wanted more and more money and then finally the red flag went off in my head. I felt so naïve. My friends in England then told me the fact that he quoted everything in dollars and not pounds and also in England no one would ever have to pay for brain cancer surgery.

The reason i'm asking is because I met him on a dating site that I thought was a little more controlled than some of the others. We chatted on the site for a bit and than we exchanged numbers. he did ask me to come to his house one night which I didn't and now all of a sudden he's out of the country for 4 weeks. Has 2 sons that don't live with him. I reversed searched him and got nothing with his images. He asked for a steam card and I said no. now asking for an amazon card to use to communicate

I was recently on Bumble and the guy I was talking to said his name was Simon Meo. Very good looking pics. Took his profile off right away saying he only wanted to concentrate on me. By day 4 saying I love you. Was very poetic saying all the right things. Talked on the phone for hrs. By day 5 travelling for business set up a meet date then had to go Europe on business before the meet date. Sent a forged contract and by day 7 sob story of lost luggage and asking me to buy him a laptop. Beware ladies!

I have a dear friend that has been talking to a few men whom I know are scammers . They hit every red flag but she won’t listen to anyone ! Don’t know what to do?? She says she’s on top offbit but will not block these creeps. They tell her every nice thing you’d ever want to hear and the txts and call come day and night like s form of brain washing . I know they have all asked for money and gift cards and she sent one money maybe two . Never a FaceTime real time photo conversation they never show up when promised it’s all so crazy . They all have a sob story and usually there names are two first names . Ladies and men beware your better off sitting at a bar to meet real people. Help I want my friend back what can we do??

All you can do is highlight the situations that you are aware of and support your friend. Don't call her stupid or naive or anything like that because she probably has heard it all ready. However, you can continue to highlight FACTS. Like what these men and women are doing and how they do it. I had a friend that fell for a guy and everyone was telling her he was a scammer and I just didn't say anything about that. I said what would it hurt if you just talk to him??? Worst case scenario he hurts your feelings, but I said the moment he starts talking about money that's it. What I have found the most interesting is how people do not want cash they want gift cards. Supposedly to sell them in the country they are "stuck" in. Well normal people don't want gift cards if they need cash, they ask for cash. And why are all of these people always "out of the country"? And why do they always profess their love in three or four days? Creepy. Creepy. Creepy. Time for people to stop giving these scammers anything no matter how in love you think you are. Just stop. The more we can prevent this from happening the less people will fall for it. Spread the word folks, let your friends and family know about this site. It is very informative.

I met this guy on a dating app and we began chatting. He quickly suggested that we move over to Google Hangouts where it was "safer" in his view. Within a few days he "loved" me and wanted to come and see me, but was off to Switzerland for a competition. He was using the name "Lucky Thomas" and kept telling me that he lived in LA. I tried to find any information I could about "Lucky Thomas" the model on the internet, but couldn't. What I did find was the pictures he was using in his profile were actually those of a real model named Max Emerson. Max Emerson has a huge social media footprint. Once he gets to Switzerland, he continues his love and affection sending me more pictures of Max. Now he asks me to "sponsor" him so that he can get more points and get closer to winning the model competition. He even has someone send me an email outlining the different levels of sponsorship. I agree to the lowest level($500) and they send me another email with instructions of how to send the money. I Western Union a name in Chicago the money. Within a couple of days, he starts telling me that he wants to come see me, but needs $1500 for airfare. When I refuse, he gets mad, starts telling me how I am abusing him and on and on. I then confront him about all the research I had been doing on him and that I suspected he was a scammer. I told him that if he wanted the money, he would have to call me. Instead of the phone call, I got a short video, again with Max in it, but had this horrible voice over with a heavy French accent. I managed to get an email address for the real Max Emerson and confirmed that he wasn't in Switzerland for a modeling contest. I confronted Lucky with this newfound information and told him I was going to the authorities. As of 7/16/2019 I have reported it to Western Union(fraud) and the FBI complaint website.

Scammer claimed he had no children; also claimed he was abducted while at job site on a weekend. Then claimed to have a problem with the crane (needed repair); then claimed to have two weeks until first inspection but tool rentals were removed by tool rental company due to non payment. Said will lose contract. I told them not giving any money. Of courses plenty of photos sent to me and I verified them; none were traceable or duplicates. Found a photo that didn't match the address provided in UK. Called scammer out as a scammer. Last words to me were "You are pained. The truth hurts. Stop sulking." So I blocked him and reported him. Probably will change the name so I didn't provide it here. Keep this in mind in case someone has a new "angle". Thanks for reading.

hello all, my guy is a body builder, looks gorgeous in his photos, says he does private work for the military, hes now been sent to africa , saying he loves me, going to buy me a car, a house for us both etc etc, asked for an itunes quite early on, now he chats about the horrors he see's, cant wait to get back to me, hes never asked for my phone number, hes saying now that he forgot to make arrangements for his dog back in california and could i send a 100 bucks to his friend as he has 4 kids and cant afford to feed the dog properly, so im stalling him at the moment, saying i dont get paid till end of month, so im wondering if he will wait now until my pay day before stating to pester again, i have to admit i love all the love stuff, makes me feel really loved up, but i fear i will get a broken heart. Part of me wants to believe what he says, but deep down i think i know he is scamming me, i must admit though that they do put the work in, if only to get a small amount of money, i argue with him a lot about money and he still comes back for more.

I was a victim of this. Never gave any money though thank God. Ladies be careful. He goes by name of Marcos Williams. Can't find anything about him on the internet. Anyway he claims to be a contractor working in Alaska. He will ask you for money so he can buy materials because his money is tied up in a bank in England. I know thats rich isn't it? Lol He will profess love right away. Very good looking. He will want to get you off the dating site as soon as possible and converse by text or phone. Please be careful and know that if somebody on a dating site asks you for money without even meeting you it's definitely a scam. If I can save one woman heartache or money I've done my job.

Andre Shultz Jimmy Shultz Bennett Liam All these are the same person. Multiple accounts with the same pictures. Handsome middle aged man. Very fit. Tattoo on the arm. Engineer. Has travelled around the world with work. Lives in California. Works on a rig in Portugal at the moment. Millionaire. Wants to move to Aus to marry person. Has a daughter in boarding school with a nanny. Wife died in child birth with 2nd child many years ago. Writes terribly- broken English. Born in New Zealand. Says he is a Christian and goes to church. Makes collages of daughter, himself and person and sends them with sooky love quotes. Asked for gift card for daughters birthday. Date went and gone. Then asked for a Amazon card for a school project. Can't talk on IG and need to use hangouts. Won't answer calls. Gets the cranks when questioned about being a scammer. Wants to deposit money to buy a house so he and said daughter can live in Aus. Person has to pay a fee to be part of the beneficiary on the account. Then wants more money for legal fees. Then wants more to release 1 million. Deposit by bit coin. Western union, the chase bank, use moneygram ect... Got off the rig and was stuck in Portugal because his accounts are frozen. He needs to see his solicitor. Then needs money because he has none. Needs to pay for motel, flights etc. Even used a gmail account for the wells Fargo bank to pretend to be a bank manager. Tells person not to tell family about them until he arrives and they will surprise the family with their love. Lots of alarm bells for this one. Anyone got any similar names?

Very handsome man named Gifford Muller born in Odense, Denmark, but his parents moved family to the states when he was 7. Also said that he resides in Paris. Has asked for Google Steam cards for both he and his daughter so they can communicate and he can get ahold of his bank. Bank told him that they loaned his money out to someone else (really??) and he needs money for his daughter’s birthday, $700 (I don’t even give my kids that much) and to pay for her boarding school in Houston (I requested he send me the name of the school and is 5 star and is legit.), $2800. The payment in October should be $9300. Says his money won’t be released until next month on the 23rd. Said he would pay it all back, when he gets off the rig, with $750 in interest. Just makes no sense. They will rob you blind and steal your heart! Wonder if this is the same guy.

1. If someone asks for money to travel offer to buy the ticket. You will need Identification and if you buy it you (the payor) will be refunded if the traveler does not show. 2. No one, repeat no one, sues iTunes cards for cash EVER. Especially the IRS or police ... 3. Why would anyone (you) be interested in a person with so much drama in their life (big business man can't pay taxes, a person has all kinds of family emergencies, gets stuck all over the world?) Move on, there are plenty of fish in the sea. 4. Check everything out, do not trust anyone. That does not make you a bad person or not trusting and anyone that says that to you does not care about you or your safety, dump them. 5. Talk to friends/family/pastor about online relationships. Why not, if you found someone you care about why would you keep it a secret? Even if they tell you to. You should be celebrating it no matter what the guy/girl says. If not, move on till you find someone who cares enough for you to shout it from the mountains. 6. As a test, ask them to help you out of a jam. Tell them you need them to send an email to a landlord or to an employer to give you a recommendation (use a fake email) and see what happens. Nothing or bad news ? Have the "landlord/employer ask for a token amount to a paypal or venmo account to help you out and see what happens (Open fake ones of course)

Two weeks ago I started chatting with a woman I met on Twitter. She seemed pretty cool but something did not seem right. She asked me if I could get her a 200 dollar Apple I Tune card and I said no. The next day we start chatting again and she asks if she can borrow a 1000 dollars to pay her employees. Of course I said no but she would not give up very easily. The next day she asks me are you going to get me my 200 dollar apple Itunes card. Of course I said no. Her response was Take care then. I blocked her cell number and every type of Social media account from her.

I had the same problem, and I still don't know whether a girl or boy , at first she revealed her name to me was Jayleen and she said that she is still looking for a man to care for her and live with her, so I summoned the courage and talked to her , I found out that she is a trader, but the weirdest things is this, immediately she convinced me that she loved me , I didn't know what to say, I freaked out , so I said that I loved her so much too, then she asked me about my homeland and my city , I told her everything, but I was appalled when she said that she wanted to come fast to my country and be with me , I was happy to hear that , just soon my heart was crashed, she told me that she needed money to upgrade iTunes card gift . She said that her camera wouldn't run without it, she also scanned a picture to prove it to me , at first I believed, as soon as I saw some of her photos , but am I to blame ? I ensured her that I would send her the amount of the money she needed, it was 200$ , I was overexcited that I told my Auntie and my Uncle all about her , my Uncle was so mad when he knew , and my Auntie was so worried , my Auntie said to me that Jayleen is trying to steal my money, and pleaded me for not to send her any money . What was going on? I was really wrong to trust her, I tried my best , so I wrote to my Auntie that Jayleen loved me and she was a girl not a boy , but his reaction was too much , he said that is not clear to me and he probably disguised in a photo of a girl , just to make me believe, he was so worried about me, I thought that was just a joke , but it was true , maybe I threw the caution to the wind . My Uncle and My Auntie made me realized my mistakes and told not to trust people in Internet , My Auntie also told me to focus on my future, I was so thankful for them both. This is my true story, I hope you understand, sometimes we do things without caution , please don't talk or trust strangers .

I went on an app to help me learn Korean. Immediately was bombarded by messages from several members of the opposite sex who were all in the "military" and were all widowers by either cancer or car crashes. Extremely charming men, but what got me suspicious is the name on the military personnel uniforms never matched the names they gave me. I began a conversation with a very nice Korean man who I unfortunately fell for. He was in love with me and wanted to marry me and he even picked out names for our future children. After speaking over a messaging app for approximately 3 weeks he asks me for money. He works in Oslo, Norway for Statoil. He cant call me using his cellphone, or do video calls because that would give away the position of the rig he is on, leaving them open to possible attacks by "terrorists ". He asks me for a $500 Amazon gift card to update his laptop otherwise he cannot do his job anymore and may get terminated. The way he became angry when I told him I didn't have that much money shocked me. He was literally telling me how much he loved me 2 minutes ago, and now he was yelling at me that I was selfish and uncaring. About a month goes by and I don't hear from him. I unblocked him thinking since I wasn't wealthy he wouldn't contact me again...he did. So after he profusely apologized for his behavior, we began texting again. Immediately I was "Baby" and "my love" again. Then here we go again...now he needs a $50 steam wallet card to update his cellphone or he will not be able to contact me. Then because he sees that I need money, he wants to link his bank account with mine so he can give me money. So why was he just asking ME for a $50 giftcard then says he wants to give me money?

I have this happening only moments ago and he's still calling me to say his luggage with all his gear containing gold and valuables, etc is held up in Venezuelan Customs. His name is Joseph Church and said he was from North Carolina, currently working in Naples Italy as a private engineer contractor. He talked with a Greek accent, oh it was dreamy and seductive. He was coming to see me in a few weeks time to collect his valuables and he was going to travel and wanted me to join him. If he could to travel and also pay for me like he said, why would he need me to pay his bill? He said he has paid a lot of money to get it here and now needs $1200aud to have it released and that he will pay me back. Luckily I was kind of aware of what might have been going on earlier as I had bluffed him, but they are so good at what they do, so played along as he was a smooth talker and it was fun. He is trying desperately to make me feel guilty and begging me to send the money. Shame to see it end. But I just hope enough people stop to investigate their responders before sending anything. My heart is the only thing breaking here at the moment, at least it's not my bank account. Good Luck to everyone, and keep spreading your stories.

I think I'm being scammed by a man that says he lives in Florida, but is working offshore in the UK. He has sent lots of pics of himself, handsome, salt and pepper hair, Blue eyes.. Playing golf, says he's 55 and travels alot on vacations. After only a few texts professes his love for me, says he "feels a soul connection with me". Hasn't asked for any money though. But gets very defensive when I ask certain questions, Like why he can't call."it's the rules", he says. He had me go to hangout to talk. No phone number. Can't find him on Facebook or anywhere else. Says his 28 year old son died. And he has a 13 year old daughter he only sees on vacation. The pics are legit as far where he says he is, on an oil rig. In an office position. But the broken English, miss spelled words etc.. Has me worried. I don't think the man in the pics is the man I'm talking to.

I have 28 different names for this man. None of which have come from this website. I was hit on FB by two gentlemen at almost the same time. Their timeline showed them both working as a Marine Engineer. Now you don't find many Engineers on FB especially being the same kind. He is surly having his own fun. What he does not know is that I am having mine stringing him along. This is the 3rd day, so we have a ways to go before/if he asks me for money. It is possible the picture that I have came from the Ukrain. FB actually has a page for him, indicating that he is a scammer.. He is called Vitali... a politician. Apparently his whole family plays this game using his picture. My sweet man goes by the name of Wilfred Joe with me. His son is Wilson, 15 years old in medical boarding school in the UK.. Wife, love of his life was killed in an auto accident in Las Vegas. He is so sad and lonely that he cries. I did see the picture of his black Benz. Asked him about it, ignored that. Best of luck girls.

Has anyone come across a gentleman named Chris Gardner? Apparently a widow with a daughter of 18. Claims to have grown up in Rosario Argentina and has an accent. This individual does contract work and recently needed to travel to Mexico to oversee a new project. Well, somehow there was an explosion caused by another employee. This individual claims to have broken his leg and is now trying to reach out to his sponsors to pay for repairs to the site. I've been communicating with him via e-mail and texts for approximately 3 weeks. Today he sent me a message saying "I'm a little behind in placing the order now. honey, I'll want you to also try and do some account balancing from your end and see what you can come up with for me..." Really? I wanted to throw up.

Beware of a scammer named Chris Gardner who claims to be from Allentown and is a self-employed construction project manager. He is very sweet and romantic and the picture he sent is quite good looking. He will contact you and try to win you over with his sexy foreign accent (Argentina/Spain). Call you honey, baby, beautiful. Then wham! He'll ask you for money for a construction project that went wrong. Beware.

Anyone can be a victim of an online scammer. After a very short time of corresponding they profess to be madly in love with you and want to be with you forever. Slowly they mention financial information until they have desperate emergencies and must have cash. STOP! Scammers come on as successful folks - often engineers or managers working in another country or on an oil rig. But OH NO for some ridiculous reason they can't get access to their own money. FACT - no matter what they say this is NEVER TRUE! Don't fall for these scams. They do not love you (they don't even know you!). They are never who they claim to be. NEVER! The truth is they are often sitting in grungy rooms amid multiple computers operated by other scammers who prey on women who want terribly to believe they have found love. The names they use are made up; the photos they use are not them but stolen from others; the things they say are from a script they follow. The only thing real is the money you lose forever by sending to someone you know only from the internet. DO NOT BE THEIR NEXT VICTIM-!!!

So are steam cards part of a scam as well? I met someone on POF & supposedly in Canada for work. Claims he needs steam cards sent to him. I would buy & send via phone. I would scan the code on my phone & send to him.

my mom joined a dating site and has had 3 men asking for large amounts of money . being so lonely and vulnerable she believed they loved her was going to make a new life with her . I have at to tell her it's just someone wanting money and googled for info see of this has happened to anyone else . she was convinced it was a wealthy business mom that was going to make her loneliness disappear and have someone to love and take care of her .This is damb right cruel to people with lonely lives who are looking for love companionship and almost do anything for it and yes even money . The dating site was dating chemistry . it needs putting out there everywhere so people dont have to go through this and if it wasnt for family stopping her from sending money she probably would of done. I suppose theres lonely people out there that haven't got family to help them understand that they are fake and probably send money to these cruel people .
