Has an online love interest asked you for money?

Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: • Federal Bureau of Investigation: Learn more at and

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

In January 2020 I met a woman who presented as a wealthy successful businesswoman and real-estate investor but down on her luck with child, offered lavish gifts and marriage , we met a few times, she continually asked for money to pay bills over 5 months I sent $20 000 in total through PayPal and Venmo, multiple text messages of repayment when back on her feet. We both live in the USA. I have her True name and date of birth, we live an hour apart. Local police say its civil, take it to small claims.

I’m writing so others might not fall for this jerks lies!
This is long but, if you get a guy that is like this, you will know!

I was playing “Scrabble Go” on line.
Random people playing the game challenge you to a game.
I had 4 games going with 4 different people.
One was named Mark S.
I didn’t even realize people could message you, until I saw this little bubble blinking at the top of the screen.
Almost immediately, after I said Hello, he dominated the game and conversation, sending me comment after comment.
Seemed like a nice guy. Said all the right things. Im widowed, he was too. He’s 68, I’m 68. He just wanted to talk! Ya, right!
He talked me into joining HangOuts. I did! We talked for hours.
As we were talking I realized I was giving all the answers. He generally answered my questions with another question of his own.
I found out his name was Mark Scott Kufur but, he goes by Scott.
Works on an oil rig ship as a drilling contractor, in the Gulf of Alaska! Had been out at sea for 3 months still had 2 to go. Lived in Houston, Texas and has a 16 year old daughter.
He was VERY into God! Prayed about everything, prayed for me before we hung up. Asked me about praying and did I and all that.
When I woke the next morning, there was a huge letter waiting for me in Hangouts! AND, a Good Morning prayer!
He told me how wonderful I was, how it was so nice to finally meet someone he could talk to, how much we had in common, etc. He asked God in his prayer to protect me and keep me safe, etc. We start talking, morning, noon, and night. We had fun! Laughed a lot! Made plans to meet.
On the THIRD DAY, he LOVED ME! He wants to marry me, we were meant to be together! Well, you know! He also asked me to STOP playing Scrabble Go, because he didn’t want to lose me to anyone else. I told him that was ridiculous, and then he made it like he was protecting me!!! Like an idiot, I did as he asked!
After just a few more days of talking back and forth, he kept trying to make me say, I loved him. This was when we exchanged pictures and email addresses!
He was very handsome and looks much younger than 68! and of course, “I was beautiful!” and “just makes him love me more!” I wouldn’t say, “ I loved him” to him, and it bothered him!
So finally I said, “ oh, I love you too!” Well, THAT did it!
After 2 more days-he was troubled! He couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t think straight. His daughter and Nanny in Houston, didn’t have any food!!! If I would give him $500, he would have his LAWYER!, send me 5% of his paycheck. AFTER his contract is finished, as that’s when he gets paid!! ( He didn’t want to ask his coworkers for money). We hadn’t even been talking for a week yet!
Of course I said, No! I questioned him about being in business but yet not having money for his daughter? He claimed he spent ALL his money on this drilling contract, and until he gets paid for it, he was broke! I still didn’t give him the money! I BLOCKED HIM instead!
The next morning, I’m thinking this over! I open my email to a lettter from his DAUGHTER (supposedly!). “Jane Scott”, wrote me, How much her Dad was hurting. He loves me, he’s sorry, please forgive him, unblock him so he can apologize, etc. ( he had told me her name was, Tracey!). I could tell it was him writing, same word usage, misspellings, and such. I answered “her”. After going back and forth, several times, I told “her”, I would unblocked and listen to him. DUMB!
Things were good, for two more days! Then, he was “troubled” again! Same story no sleeping, eating, etc. This time, he was going to lose his internet connection! on the ship! LOL! Could I sent him a STEAM CARD for 3 or 4 hundred dollars? “Just get the Card and he’ll tell me what to do. Oh, and “here’s my phone number, so you can call me as soon as you get it!!!!” THAT was last night! I immediately said Goodbye, and LOCKED HIM PERMANENTLY! I’ve gotten 4 letters in my email today from his, “coworker” Matthew Nannlis, begging me to talk with Scott because he is crying for me! This ends here! I know How vulnerable I am now! This will NOT happen again!
If any of these names sound familiar, or if the scenario sounds familiar, this s the guy! Please be careful!

Would it be possible for these comments to be listed from the latest to the oldest? Its really difficult to find current information.
It would be very helpful.

Has anyone talked to a, Steven Sims? Says he lives in North Carolina. Had to go to Oman, Asia for a engineer job.

Please can somebody help what to do i think imvfalling inlove with. somebody need an advice and somebody i can talk to and help me please.

NO! NO! NO! Do not send him money! If he works with the military or an international organization they have the money for him to get out of the war zone.

If you meet someone online and he or she ask you to go a site called what's app don't do it. If you ask him to facetime with you and he say no it's something wrong with his phone. And he needs a new phone. Don't send anything. Some will pray with but they will still want money. Don't give it to them. Sometimes they use a fake profile and make you believe its that person but its not. He will say he has cars but want to pay your bills. Don't give any information. Its a lie. And they will tell its nothing you can do to them. Don't let them make you feel helpless. Don't give your money to anyone online.

I was being pursued via Tinder via a guy named Jay and asked me to move to WhatsApp. Said he was working offshore in Irish sea and within days said that he loved me. Wants to move to be with me once his contract end. But one of their machines broke and he needs $10k USD to get the machine parts shipped to him. As they had no signal so he couldn't log into his bank account. I said I didn't have this kind of money. He then asked if I had anyone that could help and when I said I didn't he was upset and became aggressive - saying I don't care about him, giving me the guilt trip and that he was going to get into serious trouble at work for not being able to fulfill the contract. I had developed feelings for him but after this outburst and reading others comments I knew it was sadly not genuine on his part and that I'm likely one of just many he's tried to swindle. I kept him on WhatsApp to see what he'd do. Now he's as cold as a fish to me since I'm of no use financially to him. What is it with all these so-called engineers in oil rigs around the world that supposedly earn a fortune yet can't process a simple and relatively small bank transfer for themselves? I've learnt my lesson that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. I have hope that my genuine Mr Right is out there, I'm going to make sure that I take my time and meet in person first rather than giving my heart and finances to someone halfway across the world that won't even video chat.

You were smart to not send any money. The companies cover the expenses of anything broken. Engineers start at $75,000/year so why are they asking you for money??

talking to an American soldier now a veteran for 8 years lives in New Jersey. William Paul Taylor or Bueche Lecesse

I had a Gavin Walsh contact me through instagram, tried getting me to move to hangouts and whatsapp. Came from Houston, TX, sob story about starting life in Germany then moving to USA when he was 17. Wife died in a serious car crash 6 months after his sister died.
Purporting to be a military medical officer with a masters degree and has been kinghted (lord / sir).

He has continually sent me photos, set up an email and used it as his daughter, video calls, holding picture to screen pushing mouth as if to speak and then it comes up that his battery is low.

Well, I did a reverse photo search and found the correct person in the photos a happily married brazilian doctor.

I sent him the photo and asked what was going on and he then grovelled that in public they are happy and he is divorcing her in 3 months time when his contract with the UN peace keeping force in Iran finishes. Several times he has said he wants to buy himself out of the contract and do I think it would be a good idea and every time I have said no, he must stay to finish it.

I must say, He has never asked about my qualifications - I have a degree in Criminology!!

How do ya do a reverse photo look up?

Hey guys has anyone even been contacted by a guy called Desmond Williams? Says hes an off shore medic, wife died 3 years ago and daughter lives in Argentina. He looks Hispanic extremely good looking. I think hes definitely a scammer!

Currently in touch with a german man, very handsome, who has woo'd me for 2 months with love talk and charm. He started asking for money and when I said no, he said I didn't care about him, etc, trying to guilt trip me into it. He sounds so sincere, it was hard to believe he wanted to do me harm. He needed money for his oil exploration vessel because the drill broke and they couldn't finish the job. Used name norman pedersen , about 55, brown hair, beautiful brown eyes and dimples

I met a guy supposedly called Michael Heyer Smith on Zoosk. Said he was from Germany originally but now lived in the US and was working as a pipeline engineer in the Black Sea. Widower, 16 year old son, said he had fallen for me after about a day, which instantly made me suspicious. He wanted to chat on Whstsapp, but it was a business number. We spoke on the phone and he sounded more Eastern European than German. To cut a long story short, he said he was having phone trouble and would I please help by sending him an iTunes gift card! I messaged him back to say it sounded like a scam to me, goodbye and better luck next time. Then blocked his number.

I met this guy on Facebook and then we started talking on WhatsApp. He told me he was born in Italy bit living in the UK. However he is on a ship and wont come off for the next 3 months. Two weeks after we me he kept telling me how much he is in love with me and want to spend the rest of his life with me. I told him it was too soon. After 3 weeks he asked me for money stating that his daughter had to go to India for an appendix surgery and he was asking me to send him 500 dollars to help his daughter and his mom to get food. I told him I didn't have it and I can only send 50 dollars which I did. The money was also sent to the doctor he said that's doing the surgery. Now after 1 week he came back asking for 1000 dollars stating that the hotel that they are in they can't stay there anymore because the funds they have ran out. I told him that I don't have amount of money. Now he start begging me and then I feel bad but I don't want to fall into a trap by sending money to someone I have not met even though he said he is gonna pay me back.

Anyone meet an man says he’s from Arkansas and has twin boys and is on a ship in Norway and goes by the name of Miguel Dubberly by chance?

I met a guy ten months ago on Instagram he goes by Miguel Dubberly he will tell you to go onto hangouts to talk and says he is a single father of twins boys and their mother was a drug addict that he left. Always asking for steam cards. Just wondering if anyone else has communicated with him I have pics of him. And even a letter from the Shell Company in Texas and he says he is stuck in Norway on a ship and if I pay $4,000 he is able to return home. I have already lost money to him in the beginning and now that I refuse to do anything he says he loves me and wants to get married when he comes home. Swears up and down he would be coming straight to me then we would go pick up his boys in Arkansas and return here. He is very good with his words . Just need to find out if anyone else has talked to this man.

Does anyone know a Jane Smith aka Janejulia246

Has anyone received calls, UN interviews, fro individuals that supposedly work in the Transit Grant Dept, specifically Col Ying and Suzanne Bush.

Hi I have been a victim of a scam. I lost £4810. His name is Berg Adeel Anderson, widow, one son who is 17, stuck on a BP oil rig, met him on a Muslim dating site , he needed cash for cargo fee then another £42000 for custom. I did not send him anymore money after the first payment. Bp confirmed he is unknown to them. I contacted my bank and police today. I confronted him on the phone but he denies and swears he would repay. I am now in debts. I am shaken and hurt that an individual can lie so easily . Not hurt because I had feelings for him, but because I thought he was in need of help.
How can we upload photos ?

I've just been tricked by a man who claims to be Andrew Turner in the US military. We've been talking for over 7 months. Somehow it felt wrong from the beginning but I continued. I'm desperate for love, which I did not know myself. Somehow he has cheated me of about 40,000. I do not understand that it has gone so far and that I have been so terribly stupid. Now I just try to report in every way I can

This guy messaged me on Instagram. His name is Louis Santiago. He's a very handsome guy. He states he's from Brazil and lives in Manhattan. Instantly wanted to message me on the Whatsapp. He professed his love for me. He says he's an Interior Designer. Recently had a meeting to get a contract but he needs to update some software and it's going to cost him 3,700. It took him a couple of days to ask me for money. He said if I can give him whatever I have it would help. I haven't given him any money and right away I got the feeling it's a scam. How can I know for sure?? Please help

NO! NO! NO! Don't give him any money! Why isn't his company paying for the software upgrade? I'm sure he will give you an interesting and v=convincing story but don't fall for it!!

Has anyone been scammed by a Dr. Arda Arslan, supposedly a doctor from Turkey practicing medicine in New Orleans? Went to the Philippines to buy medical equipment to open his own practice but then customs was charging him 2x the fees to have equipment shipped back to the U.S. Asked me for $1000, after I said no, asked me for $500 day later. Asked me for $50 Stream card so his son could play video games. Supposedly he was at work late & couldn't go buy the card. Insisted that I send him the receipt of the purchase but I refused & he started swearing at me. He's sent me pics of him & his son & video chatted with me...he looks the same in video chats. We met on Instagram but then supposedly Instagram deleted his profile for no reason...he only wants to talk using Hangouts & uses a Text Now phone #...not a real phone #

Antonio Kreisher from Florida. Works in Construction has a Jamican Accent claims to be Italian........Has a 12 year old daughter but never has pictures of both of them together. Has anyone been contacted by someone on POF? The guy who I believe may be scamming me is Donald Harrt or Donald Camacho. Does anything had this person contact them? He is Italian but claimed he had to go to Ukraine on business but the banking system had changed their rules and now he needs my help to pay port charges on his business machines so he can deliver them to the companies he is selling them to in Ukraine. Then he told me his son Barry had a fall and had to have surgery and needs more money to pay for his medical bills.

I was scammed by a guy going by the name of Uriel White. He said his wife died five years ago and he said he is stationed in Afghanistan. Talked for four weeks then he said he needed an I phone to talk to his son because his phone broke. I sent it along with 700 he said he needed for customs. Then 1000 dollars for a ticket home. Please don’t be silly like me and fall for this scam. I will try to get my money back with the help of Apple and my bank :-(

Went on for a year. Still am very confused. Will continue to investigate to find the truth. Be very careful of all uriel white hangout accounts

Im suspicious about the person I’ve met online and the recent red flags have escalated. There is no online footprint about him and he recently got very annoyed with me when I wouldn’t give him online access to my bank.

Has anyone had any dealings with a handsome contractor stranded in Alaska by the name of Kristof?

I can't believe the FBI hasn't been involved. These are large sums of money.

Has anyone heard of a guy going by the name of Dylan Sabastian who says he technically lives in Waco, TX but is currently in London operating a winery. He has an 8 yr old son and lost his wife four yrs ago.

My friend is on with an oil driller. Says he is in Mediterranean Sea and can't get to any of his millions. Wife died and has 2 grandchildren to take care of with a nanny. wants to marry her. wants money sent to him. Says he is coming back for her after she helps pay for drill bit to get job done. Has check sent to her so she can cash it and send money back to him. Wants her to use Bit coin to send money. says he loves her and all employees love her also on oil rigg. he does not want to hear her stories. wants her to save them for when he comes home to her. wants her to send lots of money. Says his name is Mark Daniels. I am worried for my friend.

On a dating website, man in the military claiming to be a man of faith. Christian Mingle is the website. Beware!!!

Does anyone know Kelvin Walker who I believe is a scammer...not a very good one as I soon realised what he was up to. Nursed his wife to her death, no children or living relatives. Hardly knew me but wanted to move in. Worked on an oil rig off Ireland and needed some pipe work to be paid for by a person on land to suppliers in Qatar. When I told him I was no longer playing his game turned really nasty!! Worries me other people will give into to his stories.

So ive been in contact with a girl her name is Amy, if anyone knows her let me know. Ive been talking to her for the past 3 months shes really nice actually. She texts me everyday, asks me about my day how am i doing etc. The last couple months shes being asking me for money and i dont trust anything she saids but she sounds nice. Apperantly she works in fashion and the supplier has to get paid full amount before they can get all the supplies. For me doesnt make sense at all. So i guess in order to helped her she wants me to pay the supplier directly instead of giving the money to her. The first time i did thought about sending the money she did send me the bank account, the suppliers name, address, everything the bank needed. I was actually shocked she sent the info ofcourse i never sent the money but even i told her shes a scam and the supplier, she saids its legit not to worry and shes still talks to me. But everytime she talks tells me she cant wait to meet me, to talk to me etc lol something that im sure will never happened. Im not planning on sending her money but i kindy curious about if its truth all this. I tried looking for other possible red flags but money is the most i noticed. Has anyone heard about this scams?? What you think??

It's a scam! Please block the person and never give any of your personal information.

Anybody been contacted by an Owen Duncan ? From Florida?
Been chatting for a month and has asked me for money twice . To help with his mortgage!
Feel such a idiot .

Just added a comment about a Owen Duncan ... US marine ... contacted me through Instagram. He is Beautiful life 41
Declared undying love for and sent me love songs off you tube etc . 2weeks in wanted google play cards .. 4 weeks in and now wants help with his mortgage payments due to being a single dad of a cute 2 year old .
I won’t be answering him again ... feel very foolish . ( very buff and handsome in photos ) but print it even him lol

I’m also talking to a buff hot guy that’s in his 30s, ex marine... got video of him even but still red flags. Would like to compare notes or pics maybe?

Met on hinge. Lives in Colorado, works in Turkey for NATO. Asked for money, otherwise nothing else really matches... he sent me a video of him, but all else is restricted and he supposedly got in trouble for the 1mkm video he sent... in his 30s, hot, built, brown hair and eyes. White, no accent

Currently I’m talking to a guy that found me on Instagram, he says he is German ( that doesn’t speak German) that lives in Atlanta but right now he is in a contract in Dubai (he is a “pilot”, giving training). He can’t do video calls because of security reasons, and right now he just ask me for a phone card of $50 (is being 2 weeks of texting on WhatsApp). And he says that in Atlanta he lives in a air base. His goes by David Mark Nelson (Phillip Herrera, Owen Herrera) I have search him a lot and the pics he sends me are from an actual Pilot but I happen to have friends in common with the actual pilot.

So I have been a target of two attempted romance scams even though I am married. They both claim to be working on oil rigs, one in Brazil and the other in Dublin, Ireland. The one in Brazil goes by the name of Julius Donald. His profile states that he is originally from the Netherlands, lives in Merritt Island, Florida, divorced with two daughters who live in the UK. The picture looks like he is in his 60's. His profile has been taken down. The one in Dublin still has a profile up and goes by the name Mark Raynes Roberts. He claims to be widowed with a 7 year old daughter and 59 years old. He has no siblings and of course both of his parents have died. His English was awful! He said that he was a "marine engine" on the oil rig! He also tried to tell me that he grew up in LA! Yeah right! He also got really mad at me and even tried to video call me several times after I called him out! I know these scammers are a moving target but it was funny to see his awkward English response! I quote, "You have to be-carefully on how you call people name that doesn't belong to they." Oh dude you're not even trying!
