Looking to start a new relationship? For some, that may mean meeting a new love interest online. Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart.

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love.

The Federal Trade Commission receives thousands of reports each year about romance scammers who create fake online relationships only to steal their victims’ money.

Unfortunately, an online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

The FTC’s new infographic, developed with the American Bankers Association Foundation, lists common signs of online dating scams and what to do if someone you meet online asks you for money.

Below are some tips to identify a real romance versus a scammer cruising for a target.

Online Dating Scams. Has an online love interest asked you for money? That's a scam. Scammers know millions of people use online dating sites. They are there, too, hiding behind fake profiles. Signs of a scam: Professes love quickly. Claims to be from the U.S., but is overseas for business or military service. Asks for money, and lures you off the dating site. Claims to need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Plans to visit, but can’t because of an emergency. $220 million lost in 2016. $56 million lost in 2012. Reports to the FBI tripled over 5 years (4,476 reports in 2012; 14,546 reports in 2016) What to do: Slow down — and talk to someone you trust. Don’t let a scammer rush you. Never wire money, put money on a gift or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back. Contact your bank right away if you think you’ve sent money to a scammer. Report your experience to: • The online dating site • Federal Trade Commission: ftc.gov/complaint • Federal Bureau of Investigation: ic3.gov. Learn more at ftc.gov/imposters and aba.com/engagement

Please share this information with others. Victims may be embarrassed to talk about their experiences, but you can help. A simple phone call, email or text, saying “Look what I just found” and sharing this information may make a difference in someone else’s life.

I met a man named Justin Carlos on Words with Friends. I am happily married and told him so, he said fine but we can just be friends. I said okay, but before I knew it he had talked me into chatting on Hangouts. He quickly escalated things and told me he loved me etc. etc. He said he was a widower with two girls and lived in Clearwater Florida. He even sent me a photo of his daughters. Shortly after we started chatting he told me that he was off to Milan, Italy, to work as a drilling engineer on an oil rig. I was suspicious from the start but pretended to believe everything he said. We video chatted once and he did seem genuine, but as I said I am happily married and not looking to replace my husband. I finally sent him a Dear John message, before he could scam me out of any money.

Guy calls himself Allen Richardson. German/American. Contract Engineer. Son Josh. Met on Twitter. Went to hangout. February through October 2020. He has gotten close to 5,000$ from me! He wants to come "take" me and live happily ever after. He's really good, but on the phone he speaks English but definitely has an accent from abroad. I accused him of scamming and had him video call on Hangouts yesterday. Not a normal facechat but was like his picture, I tried reverse images but no luck.

I saw the red flags, but ignored them. These people are good at getting close to your heart. Mine was working on a Contract in Florida, owned a home in Tulsa, but started a new contract in Peru weeks after we met. Kept avoiding meeting face to face. His facebook account hasn't been touched since 2016 and has only basic information. His linkedin account lists two companies he has no affiliation to but claims to have owned them. Took him 2 months before he asked for money. Claimed the power and water were being shut off at the site he was at. They needed 32000 to keep it on. He came up with all but $8000 before asking me if I could "assist" in any way. That was this morning. I saw the red flags....had a few pictures...never asked for mine. I did do a background check and came back with nothing. Too clean. Also checked to see if he owned a home in Tulsa, but didn't find anything under his name. Has a daughter age 26 and a granddaughter he never sees. We talked on the phone, texted, and emailed frequently. Also, his phone was a VOIP, which is the type that hides the IP address. I was smart enough not to send him any money. But not smart enough to not get caught up in it all when the red flags started coming up.

His name is Sergio Dante....I'm also getting movie stars, country western singers, Saudi princes......yeah, rite ! I had NO idea this was so rampant and devious...and criminal !!

I was texting with a guy call Andrew Walker for over 2 months, told me his wife died in child birth. He kept telling me that he needed Steam cards to keep in touch like a fool i fell for it then he kept telling me that a part he'd ordered had been held by customs because the part didn't have a serial number. Also told me that he needed $18000 which would make up the $69000 for customs or the ship pilot who was in Paraguay. He was on a oil/gas platform in Alaska. The ironic thing was he was using a mobile phone, in the background I could hear a cockral and children. He sent me photos, spoke with him but his voice sounded younger than he was. He was even going to come to the UK at the end of the month for us to meet. I feel such a fool...

Has anyone had an experience with a German born man named Philip Lukas Daniel, now living in London England? He messaged me from POF...hus profile stated he was an only child, he lost his parents at age 15 at which time he went to live with his grandmother in Kansas. He returned to London upon her passing. Claimed to be a Real Estate Agent and after 3 months of talking he is suspended from his job. Story goes like this. He was a listing agent on a property that was for sale . He received an email from his boss with new account info from the seller that he transferred on to the bank. But apparently this email came from a hacker and the funds were never received by the seller Andor Csipek and Kitti Horvath. The directors hold him responsible for approximately £70,000 but also hold his boss and the person at the bank accountable. Lukas gives his entire savings to the "directors" along with money he has borrowed from his colleagues and his friends. And then me....yes I stupidly fell for it. Every time he went to the board of directors with money, his plea to return to work in the interim was refused. He always had to come up with a bit more before he could get that job back and this happened several times. When the remainder was paid his job was terminated. At this time be moved in with his best friend and co-worker Ronnie Mark. He uses Tamas Takacs, Mark Zolt Kiraly, Viktoria Vargas, Ray Thompson, Ronnie Mark, Kitti Horvath or Andir Csipek when asking to transfer funds....he is worried his bank account may have been compromised. Yeah right!

Met a guy online, fantastic personality Italian hairdresser. He apparently told me after 3 weeks he was taking part in a hairdressing project/ competition. He told me he had put away funds for this. Then suddenly he asked me for $9 700 us dollars as he had transferred his money to an international bank and was unable to participate until the funds came through to release his equipment. I scammed him by pretending that I would send the funds and he was furious and, um brokenhearted because I had betrayed his trust. He asked a second time and I pretended I would help but knew he would take my money and be gone. Am I lucky, for he has now blocked me... Good looking grayish beard, very naughty eyes. This is so crazy! Why can't people just be honest with one another? I was on Facebook, with my family members. Never in my life have I friended anyone outside of my family. October 04, 2020, I friended him. He seemed the gentleman, and by October 09, 2020, he asked me to marry him. Man, I really feel stupid! His name is Lewis Michael Robinson, has a 15 year old daughter in Italy. He's an drilling contractor for exxon mobil, in Norway. Has all his life savings and my diamond ring in a Chinese security company, Royal Empire Security Company. However, that company is 'closing'. He needs me to send $14,640 for the application fee, for me to receive his package. He says he has instructed the security company that I am his wife. That they are to deliver his package to me. By the way, he said he is 61. I am a divorced, disabled 60 year old woman, on social security disability. It's a very fixed, low income. We have never spoken, voice to voice. He said it's not allowed on the offshore rigs, no video chat, only uses his computer.i use my phone. Same day we met on facebook, he asked me to switch to google hangouts. He was very sweet, asked for my picture, I thought I had his, but I don't know. Always called me darling, sweetheart, honey, my queen, and my love! I really wanted to believe him, he wants me to be "our" daughter's new mama. So, I tried to take out loan after loan for him, to no avail. My medical bills left me with a low credit score. But I kept trying! I must have sucker on my forehead, cause then someone named Michael Jordan tells me I'm approved for a $15,000 loan, but I need to use my credit card for gift card purchases to boost my credit score. So I did it, losing $2,406. Then $1,000, for state taxes. I called a lawyer, she said their number wasn't in Georgia, as claimed. Their number was from the Bahamas, beware of someone calling you from 'Lightstream Financial'. Anyway, when I d tell him that I didn't get the loan, he'd tell me I had to try harder, always quoting, I'm worried. Making me feel guilty, because I don't love him, and don't want us to be a happy family, to live well and better! I told him many times, I don't care about your package, your money or your ring. That I would marry him if he was penniless. He said I was stupid for feeling that way. Each time I didn't get a loan, he would say very mean things to me. One day, I asked him, it's your package, why can't you figure out another way to get it? He got really nasty, but I kept trying. I had a real blonde (I am a blonde), and totally idiotic idea. I sold my house. I know, I know!!! This still wasn't good enough and I have been lying to him the entire time. My reply; "I didn't put the money and ring into a Chinese security company! Why the hell would you put it there, instead of a real bank, safe deposit box, ect? Your security company is, I'll guarantee, not FDIC insured! Then he didn't want to talk with me, he needed to figure this out. Next day, he wants me to email security company, tell them how much money I do have to start the process. They wanted $8500 to start for an application fee, then $6140 to deliver package to me. I went offline, but checked hangouts 36 hours later. Claimed to be worried about me, ect, ect. Always used the phrase; 'Dont worry, everything will be fine, honey's. He was to come to my home, after I used money in his package for airline ticket, I would pick him up at DIA (Denver). Then, we would move to Texas, as he says to have been born and raised in Houston. Oh, ladies, his picture is not even close to the picture in Exxon Mobil employee list. Mustache and goatee, is similar, and message I sent to the real Lewis Robinson, he's been in Nigeria, imposter said he's been in Norway! So, I beg you ladies, don't fall like I did. Hold on to your dignity and pride. PS - He's a Christian, wanted to be married in a Catholic Church. I just want a companion, that's all. THE END

I commented yesterday, about my online romance. Forgot to tell you ladies, his wife also died, and daughter, 15, name is Travis. But, I find it very strange that his name has Michael in it (middle name?), the loan companys service rep was michael, and the security companys email guy was also michael. My guy's picture, he looks as though he is a big man, not fat, larger than the 5'8" he told me. Has mustache and goatee that mustache is darker, goatee is white - very sexy I thought. I don't know if he has birthmarks on face and neck or if he was burned at some point in his life. Said he's worked hard to stay muscular and have sports car. Wears a Hooters cap, and a dwight yokum t-shirt from texas. His daughter wanted me to be her new mom! If I think of any more details, I'll let you ladies know!!!

4 weeks on Twitter and I can't believe how quickly I got scammed. The catfish Stefan Klaus from Toronto halfway through working on a 2 year contract in Gaza with the UN. His mobile phone calls from Alberta, owns house in Florida, fake building website SK Constructions in Alberta. Wife died 5 years ago, 11 yr old son Ben at Robbins Hebrew Academy in Toronto emails me too 'hi mom'. Found Stefan's pictures used by others on LinkedIn and many other similar profiles on Twitter Toronto, Alberta, Florida, Germany, Frankfurt, China. He can only email or DM on Twitter as his WhatsApp and Hangout accounts were 'hacked'. Says tunnel blown up in Gaza (actually reported on news 2 weeks ago) and says damage through his building site. Has rebuilt 20 destroyed homes for Israelis. Says phone, email and Facebook account hacked /monitored. I lost $15k to my 'soulmate' as he said he needed materials so I deposited the $ to him C/- Maria Fajeroa in Alberta (Bank of America) account. He needed $100k and wanted $35k from me, he had $60k of his own. Long sad story but can't believe I fell for it. He insisted he coming to Australia after he gets his $2.5m from his contract. Professed his love and marriage proposals within weeks. Hope story helps others to avoid.

Hello, Like so many on here I too have been tricked into a love scam. This person's name is Ariana Josephine Blankson I met her on an adult dating website. We have been texting for the past 5 months, since May 2020. I have sent her a total of $5846.00, all of it through PayPal or the Cash App. I have always had to send to a "Friend" or her "Uncle" cause she has no account. I have used credit cards to pay her and some times money from my personal checking account. I know I cannot do anything about it but rack it up as experience. I have paid for four airline tickets for her to fly from Washington State to where I live. She has always an excuse of why not going. THIS latest trip broke the bank. I paid for two more flights and she had the nerve to ask for more for a $330 COVID test the US Customs and immigration is requiring her to take. I have taken out loans and exhausted my credit cards. All I can do is rebuild and not be fooled like this again.

I have joined Christian Mingle on June 2020. I met a few some of them are from out of the country serving our country from Sudan, Afghanistan and etc. They all asked for money as if the government is not providing them enough for serving our country. Some I met locally, just the same, before we can meet in person, they leave for a different county to do business and they are all stuck there in need of money from me. Can anyone advise me as to what is the best platform to meet men who are not trying to ask for money? I know I look pretty on my profile, however, I do not look rich and I dont look like a widow who was left with much money to pay for love. The world sucks into this dating platforms.... or it is just my luck... so help me God!!!

I joined Christian Mingle on June 2020. I met many men from the platform, unfortunately, they were all scammers! They are supposed to be Christian that is what I thought..Christian men do not hurt women by scamming them...Watch out

Started communicating with Antonieta Gift exactly two weeks ago today. He claims from LA but profile said Charlotte, NC. Wonderful touching words daily, songs, poems. Etc Facebook and had me change to hangouts. The first week I brought up how another man named Katen works on an oil rig tried to friend match me on Facebook. I said two oil rug workers in one week. Texted him about scams. Flew off the handle at me. He actually called me on hangouts tonight. Bingo, his voice was not american, could hardly understand his speech. Then he texted me the money story, part on oil rig broke down. Even sent picture. Eyc... needs 15,000. Yeah right. Funny last night he texted me about his wealth, the contract with shell. How much he invested, on and on. Then all of a sudden the next night needs money. Good bye scammer. I already knew his game. But two weeks was to short to play the game. Oh. Nanny name is Mary, I spoke to her and daughters name is Jane. He is an Irishman
