While plenty of successful relationships begin online, scammers also use online dating sites, apps, and chat rooms to trick you into sending them money. These imposters create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love. Some even make wedding plans before disappearing with the money. It’s a big problem: reports to the FBI about online romance scams tripled between 2012 and 2016, and imposter scams were among the top reports to the Federal Trade Commission for both the general population and the military community.

These scams can take a military angle with imposters stealing servicemembers’ photos to create phony profiles. They might claim to be servicemembers who can’t get into their accounts overseas or who need money fast. The first sign of a scam is an online love interest who asks for money. But the Army’s Criminal Investigative Service (CIS) says that the military doesn’t charge servicemembers to go on leave, get married, communicate with their family, go online, or feed and house themselves on deployment. We have also heard of scammers re-using servicemembers’ photos again and again, so it can be helpful to do some online research on the love interest’s name, photos, and details to check the story out.

If an online love interest asks you for money:

  • Slow down and talk to someone you trust. These scammers want to rush you, often professing love right away; or pressuring you to move your conversation off the dating site.
  • Never wire money, put money on a gift card or cash reload card, or send cash to an online love interest. You won’t get it back.
  • If you sent money to a scammer, contact the company you used to send the money (wire transfer service, gift card company, or cash reload card company) and tell them it was a fraudulent transaction. Ask to have the transaction reversed if possible.
  • Report your experience to the dating site and to the FTC.

For Military Consumer Month, share this video to help military consumers steer clear of online romance scams.

This is an update on the scammer that used the Cap Vest scam. He is on POF and many other sites. He also uses an Oil Rig scam as a Petroleum Engineer. In the last week he has posted five profiles on POF and reported all and were deleted. He is a good looking man early 60s with gray hair and a great smile. His picture is who he really is. He lives in London. Always uses a different name but always Widowed and interested in marriage. Wish I could post his picture. All the profiles have been in Florida. He gets a local number and always a Google Subscriber number (seems all Scammers use this type). He comes on very strong, writes well and has an accent. Beware of him. He never got any money from me, but is good at what he does. Am hopeful can save women from this Scammer. He also has a Passport.

Has anybody heard of Howard Taylor who says he's from Oklahoma and is currently deployed. He just contacted me yesterday saying he's returning to the U.S. in 2 weeks. I don't know much else except he has a granddaughter in Dallas. Wonder if it's safe to continue talking with him. He contacted me through google chats. I looked up his hometown in OK and saw it was close to TX border but he said it was 200 miles from TX. I got suspicious and he immediately called me on video chat to discuss it but I wouldn't answer because it was late at night. Any advice?

Has anyone encountered a guy that uses different variations of Rico on words with friends two? Supposedly he is a Green Beret stationed in Afghanistan. Says he is 55 yet his photos look like late 30’s to early 40’s. I did a reverse image search on him in uniform and it came back with so much information on this guy. He has been operating for several years under various names including Rico because that is what is on the uniform of the servicemember that he is using. This guy is good-looking, wears glasses and has a tribal tattoo on his right arm. He first asked for a $65 iTunes card so he could get a couple of books to read because he was bored. Next he asked for $250 in iTunes cards for books that he needed for a promotion. Now all of a sudden he can’t sleep at night because of what he is seen in Afghanistan so he needs $9100 for medication I told him I did not have this kind of money so miraculously he came up with $4000 and only needs $5100. He has professed his love for me. I am ashamed to say that I did send him the iTunes cards because I thought that I was helping a US soldier. I do not believe a word he says now and will not send him the money. He wants it wired to someone else’s account. When I confronted him through words with friends chat that I thought that he was a scammer he explained it away by saying that somebody had stolen his identity and his photos and that he was the real Rico Disick. He is now using the user name RicoDKing as his words with friends user name. His profile picture is supposedly him sitting in an army vehicle. Through many Google searches, I have discovered that he is actually a Nigerian scammer. He claims to have a 25 year old son in Spain. I would be interested in exchanging stories with anyone who has been a victim of his.

I got Luke Antonio. Lol! Extremely good looking, photo on Facebook him and 5 little kids. Claims to be a sergeant and deployed in Syria. He gave me story that both parents died in a car wreck and he’s the only one. Wife divorced him 2 years ago and took 3 little kids. He got the two oldest. While deployed kids are in state custody. What a bunch of BS! He claimed his gmail email is his military email. Couldn’t give me his military email or APO address. Oh, and claimed to have gone to Stanford but his English lacked in proficiency. Also not one single comment on his Facebook posts. Not one single friends but he follows hundreds of women on Facebook. Reported him to US Army Criminal Investigation Division and to Facebook. Good Lord these people are so impossible.

I have met Gerard Aubert online through tinder. Highly intelligent works on a oil rig in Angola and lives in South Africa. Although from the states. Sending me poems professing love etc. Then needed money for his son and then needed money for a broken drilling machine and now needs money for his flight back to South Africa. Yet just found him on tinder and hes recently been on and it states hes in South Africa and a mere few kilometers away from me. Yet he was quite desperate to get money from me to fly back to South Africa. He was quite nasty when I declined him on his requests for money. Hes on Facebook tinder linkedin etc. All along he was in South Africa just trying to bribe me for money. A real sweet talker. But clearly have to be warned against these kind of people. Nobody must ever give money and even if its urgent they have families embassies etc to assist

"Gerard" has just been caught out trying to scam me too, I met him through Academic Singles, where I have spoken to a few guys in the beginning, who claimed to have been potentially duped by women on the site. I don't think this has fully hit me yet but already has left me feeling like I will trust absolutely nobody ever again, what a drain on my emotions. I am reporting this immediately to the Federal Trade Commission and I hope something will come of it. I'm sure that the real Gerard Aubert is out there, unsuspecting, having had his passport stolen. What a sick world we live in

I think the longer the scam the harder to believe what is true and what isn't. My first scammer asked for money after a month. His scam was pretty obvious and the conversations between us were pretty shallow. I was disappointed but had not put too much into the relationship. Second scammer was a year and a half. He asked for money after 6 months and I was pretty invested by then. He had documentation to back up his stories and it was pretty convincing. He shared a passport with me and other details that seemed true. I knew once he asked for money that this was not real but it took me another year to pull myself away from him. I did a google search with the pictures he gave me and found a match on Instagram. Since than he admitted to lying but still sticks to some of his story. I reached out to the guy on Instagram so I could move on. I just wanted to find the guy that the pictures belonged to. Now a year later I am hooked again and after 8 months he started asking for money. It's crazy to think two scammers found me than I found another one by just trying to find some truth. I think the hardest part is not losing all the money but believing in something that will never happen. The current guy I am talking to says he is in the Army and sells it pretty good. The Covid outbreak worked to his advantage on not coming home yet. I have had one phone call with him and no accent so that was different from the other two. He sent many pictures of him and his son. His son is sick and had pictures of him in the hospital as well. He has me involved with talking with his nanny in the states and when he said his son was getting surgery gave me the number to talk with his doctor as well. I keep saying I can't send money, I don't have any and now he wants to send me a debit card to get money from to send to the nanny. I am not understanding the purpose of that at all. May you all find peace with your experiences since it is not easy at all.

I was contacted through Instagram by a James Albert, dr_wide_042 who is most likely a scammer. He describes himself as a surgeon on a peacekeeping mission for the United Nations in Yemen. He says he has a son and is a widower as his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. The brief exchange mimics much of what I have read by others here. I did a reverse photo lookup and saw he is using the images of a well established plastic surgeon in Columbia. I thought I would post this to save anyone the possibility of being scammed.

I am speaking to a guy 49years old who says he is in Libya in the Navy. Is originally from the Ukraine, and said he is supposed to get over a million dollars for his time served and his missions served. He was to have the money into his own bank account in the USA but because he is out of country the government won't or the bank place it into it for some reason. He wants to have the government send the money to me, however I am not his wife, or relative I met him on a dating site . He claims if he can't get it sent to me they will not give him the money if he leaves and he will lose it. Is this a scam even though he isn't asked me for money.

So I met this guy name marius andrei about 4 months ago through Instagram and invited me to chat with him on WhatsApp. He told me hes a private pilot and he has a son. He told me his ex wife was a drug addict and drinking too much and he said he tried to help her but he gave up and let her be. At first I thought he was kind, loving man. He told me hes stuck in germany due to this virus. He said his card wasn't working and ask me to send money to him because he didnt want his son to starve and so to him. Times he says hes sick and he needs money for meds and I did felt sorry for him. Everytime he tells me I'll pay you back when I'm back in state. He sends me photos and a video and said those are recently taken and are taken for you. He kept telling how much he loves me, wants to be with me and he wanted to meet up with me at LA airport. So I purchased a ticket to go meet him but some lady warn me about marius and was told hes married. I confront him and he said it's all a lie. He told me hes doesn't have a wife. He told me why would I make it up. Again whoever this lady is, gave me this girls name and apparently there is another woman hes been seeing. I asked him again he said I dont know her, she could be my ex and later I emailed her and I asked her she said shes fiance of Marius and will soon be married. I kept asking him why you're lying to me and he got so offended and told me shes not my wife, shes just a receptionist working with me staying in Germany. Later on the same woman messaged me and She told me whoever this man is not who you think he is. She told me his name is not marius and hes not from Romanian. She gave me all proof about this is a scam and it's coming from Nigeria and I was so scared and so I cancelled my flight. I blocked him social media, WhatsApp, hangouts and everything else. I send money to him close to $2000 and I know I won't get it back. Again he goes by marius andrei.

I just had my first experience and know this is definitely a scam. The man go by the name of Dr. Martin Jason and claim he has been in the navy for 13 years as a surgeon . He stated that he is an orphan from the UK and his wife died giving birth to his 5 year old daughter name Lisa that lives with the nanny while he’s at sea. He is also very charming and will fall in love with you fast. He told me that he applied for a loan to open his own hospital and wants me to be his wife. He sent pictures of himself and daughter, but my first red flag was that he never wanted to video chat. He contacted me through Instagram and insisted on me speaking to him on WhatsApp due to security of his job. The second red flag was when he asked me for money for a phone claiming that he couldn’t get to his accounts and desperately needed money for a phone to talk to me and was particular about an IPhone. I knew it was a scam and wanted to see how far he would go when I told him no. The last was telling me he got approved for this government loan , but needed my account number to deposit the funds , because his account is having issues. I never gave my information and I’m writing this, because it makes me so angry how people think that we are so stupid. Ladies please be alert and never give your information, or send money because you will be mentally hurt and never get your money back... I sent everything I have to authorities and hopefully this will help!!!!!

He is currently going by the name Christopher Madsen and claims he is a rear admiral in the danish navy situated in Kabul. He is due to come home next week but needs to send a package with his spoils of war. I have searched the images which turn out to have been used for various fake profiles, Dr derrick hendeick, Kris vasil, bony etc. He has a daughter and had sent be pictures and videos. I would like to know who the man in these pictures is as his identity is clearly being misused. Also he has a house in Chelsea and will be retiring soon to.live in the UK.

So, I have met 2 guys on LinkedIn. The one I am questioning is Peter Etheridge. He is a single dad with a son who stays with his grandmother. He states that "Like I told you before I have been working so hard to win a contract before my deployment, I just got word from my attorney telling me I have high chances of being appointed the contract but I can't execute the contract from a war zone. I will have to add someone close to me to my file , someone I can trust to help me execute the contract. I would love to ask for your approval and acceptance to add you to my file.More information won't come to light until the contract documentation has been fully completed . Actions required from you are not much, just bookkeeping and taking records of Oil and gas deliveries.Sometimes notarization and signature affixing might lead to you traveling from one place to another and will make you explore more. I have been making plans for the purchase of trucks and to employ drivers. The contract is worth $700m and runs for 2 years, I will be supplying oil and gas to all branches of Morrison's oil and gas Retail. Now, I am a very well educated person, and while I would love to think this is someone being honest, his story just matches too much to some of the ones above. Has anyone dealt with a man by this name?

Hi, a month ago met someone on IG and asked to talk on what's app. He said he worked on a oil rig in Mexico but he had 5 kids and wife died 3 years ago. He too asked could he ship his valuables to me. He said he paid cost for shipping. But then I get an email that customs had the package in Houston and I had to payt $5,120 to a cash app who was the agent of the company and they would pay customs, and said it would be delivered. I paid, but then 2 days later I get another email that now Homeland security had it and I need to pay $15,200 for Homeland security to release it. I said I don't have that kind of money. He is urging me to pay them so "we" don't lose the parcel because it's our future. Both he and the delivery company are saying I can pay $500-$1000 a week till it's paid. I told him stop texting me I want nothing more to do with him. He messaged me back and said I've hurt him and he will never forgive me.

My sister was contacted by BRADY TONY CAMARA (a military guy) he told her after a few days that he was in love with her they "met" on facebook but later on moved to Hangouts..after just a couple of weeks he told her that he was in Syria and that him and his lutendeant had taken money away from some people and that he needed someone to send it to but had no family and asked her for her address and all...she felt bad and gave him her information...a few days later the "package" was stuck in Turkey and she needed to pay over $500 for the "package" to be released (this package had A LOT OF MONEY....(supposedly) well she didn't have the money and she told him and he got mad and started telling her that she was going to go to jail for a very long time blah blah basically intimidated her to the core! She told me about it and started researching and found out it was a scam! Mind u she got videos and pics "of him." His facebook is now gone and he was mad and stopped talking to her. by the way she was sent a name and address of the person she needed to send the money to which is Joseph T. Aleriosa with a Bank of America account number and Routing number with an address in Carson, California. Don't get scam!

Just interested in knowing if any of you ladies have had the opportunity in talking with a Johnson Mitchelle. I have been talking to him for almost 3 years now and he has asked me to marry him. He says he has numerous mansions in different countries and 4 million dollars in Barclays bank in London England and has appointed me as his next of kin but the money can't be touched until we are together and there is also a man by the name of DR. Freddie Townsend from SHAR HOSPITAL in IRAQ trying to collect a hospital bill that Johnson Mitchelle acquired there. plus there are numerous other names I can put on here if it would help any of you ladies maybe avoid these scammers and yes I did lose money and I sent STEAM cards but I have learned my lesson and will never do it again. SO LADIES PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TALK TO ON HERE AND THAT MEANS "MEN" I JUST WISH I COULD FIND A WAY TO RECOUP THE MONEY I LOST OVER THIS MAN!!!!! PLEASE BE CAREFUL JOHNSON MITCHELLE OR JOHNSON MITCHELL HE USES BOTH PLUS OTHERS!!!!!!
