How to avoid a Bitcoin blackmail scam

“I know about the secret you are keeping from your wife and everyone else. You can ignore this letter, or pay me a $8600 confidentiality fee in Bitcoin”.

It’s enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine, but these chilling words are part of a new scam targeting men.

Here’s how it works. Scammers have been sending letters to men, demanding payments using bitcoin in exchange for keeping quiet about alleged affairs. The letter also explains how to use bitcoin to make the payment.

This is a criminal extortion attempt to separate people from their money.

If you — or someone you know — gets a letter like this, report it immediately to your local police, and the FBI.

Threats, intimidation and high-pressure tactics are classic signs of a scam. Learn how to stay ahead of clever crooks with these practical tips, and check out the ways you can keep your personal information secure.

Got this email today and felt upset.
How do we report it on FBI website? Just click share tips? Feel it's sorta trivial yet very annoying.

I got a similar blackmail email today, below is the account info:
"Get $ 2000 in bitcoin and send it to the down below address:
bc1***qneg wgd3xnmz ulgcmxm3sh32vt5h5 9fhe23kxk [case-SENSITIVE copy and paste it, and remove *** from it] "

It’s sad reading all these comments about everyone getting these emails. I just got one and of courses I panicked, it had m email and half my password, I read it several times and had to compose myself.

I changed all the passwords to my account and even looked up the information trying to find out if this email was for real or not.
I found this site and now understand how this is a LARGE scam and how many people are effected by this. Be safe

Has anyone had their information sent out to their contacts? It’s scary thinking they have stuff they could send to someone. Just curious if they continue to try and extort you.

I received two of these today, both asking for $2,000 each in bitcoin to separate accounts, and both with an old password.
Let’s say you pay them...what’s to stop them coming back for more?
I am curious if anyone has actually had their webcam footage shared per the threat?

I got one...virtually the same. This on was from Parker Stevens of Hardy Boys. I guess he forgot to sign on that royalties line. Anyway, they wanted only $200.00 in bitcoin. So, I reported them to the FBI.

how do you report to the fbi? I’m trying to as well.

You can report this crime to the FBI using their Internet Crime Complaint Center website: https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

What email did you use to report it to FBI?
I got one of these yesterday

mavrhiannayvf@ bitcoin scam knew my old email very threatening

Received an email from an outlook address that I don't know. Whoever the person is--they are trying to extort me for $1000 in btc. Threatening to send a video clip of me that was "recorded" of me "browsing adult sites". I don't go on those sites nor do I use the camera that's installed on my laptop. It's covered by tape. I just received an email trying to black mail me about some porn sites and video of me in privacy. Threat that they were going to contact all my contracts with this seedy information and a video unless I pay $2000 bitcoin. He or she claiming that detected me seeing me reading the scam email with warring to pay within 2 days. I marked the email as scam and changed all my email and social media account password. I received a similar email threatening unless buying $2000 bitcoin within 24 hours. I reported to FTC.

I received the same emails. Have the scammers ever followed through with the threats?

I have deleted three scam extortion with bitcoin emails, changed passwords on two accounts and nothing has happened. The three emails are all similar in that the person claims to have webcam video of me and will share it with all my contacts if I don’t come up with 1900 dollars in bitcoin. All three persons had an old password of mine, (the same old password).

This type of email is still going around. I received this email in my inbox, not spam folder, asking for $1k in bitcoins.

I just received an email from: Liv Risher <ygymarylynnelj@ > obviously a threat. They got a hold of an old password I used. The threat is similar to the others I read here. Who can this be reported to?

If you — or someone you know — gets a letter like this, report it immediately to your local police, and the FBI.

Got virtually the same email asking for $1000 to bitcoin account bc1qsq0h 7gdth4at97k s2f0qm9lss4wh g7pealjgfw Reported them and added to this thread

So has anyone actually been blackmailed by this type of scam? Have you suffered the consequences they threaten in their email? If so, please report.

I just got one of these yesterday. The hacked password they referred to goes to LinkedIn which has had many previous hacks. I have a similar one for Dropbox, which also has had hacks. I haven't used either one in years, so it's an old hack. Just change passwords there and on email to be safe, it may be too late with connections which may (or may not) have been downloaded, but I believe they have nothing to threaten you with. But tell friends what happened because they may also get the "I need money fast" scam under your name. Scammers find live suckers and sell those lists separately. My understanding is that Gmail filters out those mail read pixels in their prefetch, so it's an empty threat to contact you unless you actively reply back. We are all just ones of millions sent out with blanks for email address and 1 password filled in by computer. Most email addresses in those sites are probably dead because they go back a decade. Use the tape over the camera - I use a postit note that I can pull back on the rare times I videoconference. Before you give anything (for those super panicked), some of these scams may fund terrorist activities. So don't. Also, no one really cares if you watch adult porn; it's the largest industry in America - $12 billion a year in USA and $97 Billion worldwide. Twitter has 10 million porn accounts. Someone, maybe almost everyone, has seen it, including the people they are threatening to show it to. It's not easy to hack into your camera, and certainly not on the scale of the hacked websites. It's mostly bluff and social engineering on a large scale. They send out millions of the same thing, personalized one or two items by computer, and hope for a bite. Think of it as a good reminder to change passwords for tougher security.

Hello, is somebody taking action on this?.
More of these threatening messages are coming in .

Called my local police dept. They don't accept this issue for report. Looked @ the FBI website, they don't appear to want it either.

I received one of these emails today. They’ve demanded 2000 US in Bitcoin. Wallet ID: c1qcy7dk lke3uq2ja cy3lgh70hhxy8 xc59lgyqd2p
Looks like email originated in Chicago. Then London, to Los Angeles, back to London. I quit searching.

I received three emails on three different days from different fictitious names. Each email was a slight variation with the same theme. I was asked to send 1900 dollars in bitcoin or else a split video involving porn would be sent in 24 hours to all my contacts. The sender claims to know my password. (which I used on a website account many years ago). The sender claims to have seen me doing something sexual on a webcam and he will be sending it to my contacts in the split porn video. The email matches word for word the email reported by other people on this page. I changed passwords and deleted the first email as phishing. I have written down the email address of the third scammer as: chddalstonudj@ and his bitcoin address is bclqpg vvz8rsa924t5a2v csppc2havkfwn cmj6rcc0

I got the exact same email — word-for-word — on 4/22/20 from “Toma Breeze.”

I got this exact email trying to scare me into sending this guy Tomaso Mccoll $2000 in Bitcoin....It made my heart stop, cuz the letter quoted a current password (I will be changing those website login/passwords tomorrow for sure). Seeing your sample made me realize this is extortion. I will call police and FBI tomorrow to report. If these hacks would just use their skills for good.....it would be so much better. God bless.

I got a similar one yesterday. Not sure where to report the issue. Somehow they getting access to an old password for hotmail address.

I just received an email from Melaka Rowse with one of my old pw that I have used in the past demanding $1000.00 in bitcoin or they would release a video of me while at a porn site. They demanded that I send it to a specific address within 24 hours or they’d release the video to my contacts. Kind of upsetting receiving an email like this. What’s worse is that it was in my actual inbox and not filtered into my junk mail.

Hi all.
This scammer used a real password but emailed me on a now defunct email (hardly use this account). He is asking for 2000 USD in bitcoins. Threatening to send my recordings of me watching porn to 8 of my contacts lol. (As stated he could send it to my father, mother, co-workers etc). He said he has been monitoring my online activity for the past 121 days. His name was Con panacheli.

I’ve shutdown the account that he emailed, it was a hotmail one and have changed the passwords to as many things as possible. Installed an anti malaware on my phone.

Hoping everyone stays safe. Really sad that in a middle of the pandemic these guys are at it. But after reading this comment section I feel relieved.

I’ve just received one of these extortion email and it was in English although I’m an Arab
Using my Twitter password I deactivated my account but trying so hard to change my email password right now
What should I do ?
Are they going to hack my phone ?
Do they really have an access to my contact list?

I’ve had 2 different types of these emails, I’m a women who doesn’t view this type of content so I knew straight away these were fake, however the fact they had a password (when I first got one of these emails the password they gave was one I used for a clothing site (shein) which I learnt had a data leak about in 2018. So I changed the password straight away. It did scare me not going to lie but then I did some research on it and found all the information I needed about these scams. The first emails from was from a “recorded you” email then the second one I got yesterday had a female name (Sammy frelich) there are many of these scams going around. They ain’t got shit on you so don’t worry it’s just a scare to try and get money from you! DO NOT SEND THEM ANY MONEY OR CLICK ON ANY LINKS IN THE EMAIL SIMPLY DELETE THE EMAILS AND JUST IGNOR THEM! Stay safe everyone!

Got my first email of this kind this morning. It lists an old password from somewhere that I once used. It mentions my Facebook account.. which is funny because I deleted mine in February because of trolls and some really negative people that turned me off to commenting on some fan pages. I deleted my account in February and deleted the email after reading it. The sad thing about jerks like those kind of people are is that they have more time to do this stuff when they are quarantined, if just staying indoors ,dealing with the Covid 19 safety issues.

Got one today...had my apple ID (almost) wanted $2000 in bitcoin or she (Nelia Braxton) would send sexually graphic video clips to 12 people I know. "I know a lot of things regarding you. Your entire fb contact list, mobile phone contacts plus all the online activity in your computer from past 149 days..."
